After having played the game for a couple of hours I can say its a fun first person shooter with very lite rpg elements allowing you to upgrade your weapons and skills etc.

Graphically looks nice and plays smoothly and with the same quirky style of humour as the previous games in the series. If you are looking for a light fps then this could be for you. If looking for something more

Hilarious and fun to play just like the first game. Well worth your time and money. Even though I bought the first game when it first came out it is cool of them to include the first game. Would have loved a physical copy but still glad to own a digital one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Been a while since I've done a review for a game, but I figure that I can finally do one as I'm currently working on five games at once for a final consensus on it, this being one.

So Shadow Warrior 2 is the bigger and ultimately bottom heavy cousin of the previous game, basically expanding on most of the things that was present in the game: the gore has increased, the visuals even more radiant and sometimes overabundant, the rpg progression system expanded upon, and the jokes more continuous. Now, while I can commend the developers for trying to make the game bigger in scope than it's predecessor, and to give credit where credit is due, they put a lot of effort and time to make Shadow Warrior 2 comparatively different from before. With that being said, Shadow Warrior 2 is a muddled, bottom heavy game with one too many mehanics from it's prior game, making it off putting for some. There is now a RNG system for the weapons, gems (which are mods for your character, guns, and even co-op experiences, which is also a new mechanic), there is a Diablo-esque difficulty system, which will make the game initially easier in comparison to it's predeccesor, 'free-roam' (which is more akin to a giant area for each mission), side missions from the main missions, challenges, and even more muddled stuff that makes Shadow Warrior 2 feel like a mesh of the original Shadow Warrior premise with Borderlands 2 and Diablo 3 tacked on. Again, I assume good intentions from the dev team trying to make SW2 not just a cynical copy-paste of the original, but I think they did too much to deviate from it. As a result, the story falls on the wayside, as it both relies on knowledge of events from the first story (the demons invading earth is known as 'the Collisiion' in SW2, causing initial confusion), and gets lost in the mire of side challenges, side missions, and micromanaging all the weapons and 'mods' you will get. Granted, the RNG weapon system is done right, as each weapon you discover has a unique character of it's own (and limited to about 100 or so), rather than being a generic weapon with slightly better stats than a identical weapon. The weapon wheel has been expanded from the prior game, with launchers, both grenade and rocket, two handed melee weapons, dual wielding melee weapons, revolvers, pistols, smgs, assault rifles, even **** bows make a presence in this game to personalize your arsenal. Unfortunately, the means to select them are tied to one button, having to leave yourself vulnerable to select more than the last two weapons you used, rather than a slow down mode to select weapons from Doom 4. Anyway, the story follows roughly 5 years from the events of the first (sharing connotations with the story of BL2 as well), where Wang, having lost his pal from the last game, still inherited some of the Chi powers he learned, being able to dash, sprint infinitely, and double jump on top of all things, as well as healing and sword slash abilities from the prior game. However, projectile weapons are definitely more useful this time around, but you can concievably run an all melee build with all the crazy weapons available. Wang is tasked with finding a orb, which is put to the wayside when he has to find some woman who the Yakuza is interested with. There is some faction lore described in both the game and the scrolls you will find throughout the game, but the Yakuza and ZillaCorps are just basically fodder in the overtly meaty parts of the game. the enemies, both being Yakua and Zillacorps, with some demons and beasts, are similarly unique to the prior game, while also having similar mechanics from factions (the demon's Hata Mari are very similar to ZillaCorps D.O.L.L's, for istance), but most don't really require much forethought into their defeat, other than having certain resistances (similar to Diablo 3's enemies where they are basically bullet sponges with slight resistances to different things) compared to enemies from SW2. Jokes are still present, but most of the fortune cookies you'll find mostly have throwaway quotes rather than punchy jokes (other than the reference to the Harambe meme).

All in all, SW2 has a good heart, and a dedicated team that wants it to be a improvement on the last Shadow Warrior in many ways, but it does way too much, and burdens it's player with too many trinkets to mask some of the overlooked aspects of the game not touched upon. The game is well done, but mostly forgotten as a blur in the mess of all the things they tried to pack in to give the game the sense of being bigger in retrospect, and while the game is bigger, it weighs the entire game down on it's own scope.

I have nearly 500 upgrades and going through them each time or unlocking, and having to find that gem to re insert is a big pain. Besides that i'm loving the boss battles, and overall gameplay. I'm sure this would be fun as hell co op with friends as well. So in total if you did FPS shooters where you slice, shoot, and blow up demons and yakuza pick this up! Expand

What made SW2 so addctive for me is the freedom of mobility!
It's fast-paced, with a satisfying combat system and a nice variety of enemies and guns for you to run, loot and shoot your way through the campaign. It gives you room for improvisation and growth, killing repetition and keeping the challenge fair and entertaining. It's shooting and moving mechanics work so well that gets close to other games like Doom and Borderlands 2, in terms of enjoyment, but it's just not polished enough to stand besides them.
One other thing that kept me going was the story. It's not great, but it's very funny! The writing cracked me up sometimes and characters were actually quite humorous and cool to pay attention to. My only gripe with the story is it's ending. It's abrupt and pointless.

But while I couldn't stop playing SW2, I also couldn't help but notice it's jarring defects. The entire game, while amusing, feels unpolished and underdeveloped.
One of it's biggest problems is the fact that you'll simoutaneously face TOO MANY BULLET SPONGEY enemies, ALL THE TIME, CROWDING the screen and unecessarily WASTING your health, ammo, time and patience. It's a **** of a messy hostile party and it just gets worse towards the end.
On top of that, the UI is downright ugly! It makes everything confusing. The looting system isn't user-friendly enough for you to understand and remember what is what. It's chaos!
Upgrades can feel useless, the loot is redundant, ammo is somewhat scarce, objectives are dull, melee combat feels toothless and I've also experienced several bugs that forced me to restart the game.

I finished Shadow Warrior 2 in 10 hours and I had A LOT of fun with it, but its faults made it VERY hard for me to even think about going back to it or recommend the game.
If you want mindless funny entertainement, you'll find it here, but you'll also experience plenty of set backs that might hinder your enjoyment.

It looks like a ok game but the constant swearing is totally annoying. Every few minutes in the game all you hear is swearing. A total pass.

Expand

Even though Lo Wang and his encyclopedia of offensive terms can get a little tiresome by the end of the journey, Flying Wild Hog squeezed a lot of play variety onto this disc. Deftly combining looting and RPG elements with speedy, accessible sword and shooting mechanics, they’ve created an unforgettable experience for fans of console first-person gaming.

Shadow Warrior 2 is bigger, funnier, deeper and nutter than the previous game, thanks to its RPG component and more open environments. It still feels rough on the edges though, due to an inconsistent frame-rate and too bullet-spongy high level enemies that make us forget any strategy in favor of overly long shooting sessions. All in all, however a definitely suggested buy for '90s style FPS lovers.
