The controls actually pleasantly surprised me because I didn’t expect them to be as tight and responsive as they were and thankfully they remained that way throughout. This game can be very fun when played in short bursts and in some ways they’ve done justice to the Road Rash formula especially when attacking on your bike. There’s a nice variety of weapons you can use against your opponents and tackling your opponents at full speed feels very satisfying for the most part. In terms of content there is quite a bit for you to get to grips with and enough variety within the content to keep you coming back for more. I was a little disappointed with the presentation side of the game because nothing really captures your attention here. The online components of the game were ok but it was very difficult to find a game and it took multiple attempts to get in a game. At times the difficulty curve seems to spike out of nowhere which does make some tracks very frustrating to race on. When I think about the Sega Genesis one game always springs to mind and that game is Road Rash. To say I enjoyed my time with Road Rash back in the day would be a massive understatement so as you can imagine when I first saw Road Redemption I couldn’t wait to get to grips with it. Thankfully it’s actually pretty decent as well and whilst it’s not perfect by any means the way they’ve captured the true Road Rash feel made me forget about the shortcomings it suffers with quite quickly. If you ever played Road Rash before then you’ll know what to expect with this game and I’m pleased to say that they’ve got the attacking elements whilst riding spot on in my opinion. There’s plenty of weapons for you to use against your opponents and the controls don’t let you down either which is of course very important. I was expecting a little more from the presentation side of the game though and the difficulty spikes out of nowhere can be frustrating from time to time, but I did get pass these issues thanks to the amount of content there was. At the end of the day then Road Redemption is a decent take on a formula that was so popular back in the day and even though it doesn’t get everything right fans of Road Rash will thoroughly enjoy what this game brings to the table. While managing to deliver a decent melee combat racing experience, Road Redemption is bogged down by its stilted progression and under par presentation. The campaign can be a pain to complete and the time taken to upgrade your rider and bike, with little payoff, seems pointless.

Road Redemption is a surprisingly sincere and brutal love letter to the past and its inspirations. It may look like a junker if you glance at its battle-worn chassis, but underneath the fairing is the heart of a surprisingly addictive and fun road warrior game.

The core loop that made Road Rash such a classic is just about present here. However, it doesn’t come without problems. Whilst it’s fun to have a vehicular duel as you tear along the road, such weightless impact, its floaty physics, and the heavy reliance on randomly generated tracks and objectives, massively pulls the game short in the long run. The foundation is on the right track, but it definitely needed more time in the oven.
