Redeemer is an In-Your-Face top-down hack and slash/shooter with an attitude. Once a soldier, you play as Vasily, who left his past in hopes of a peaceful future as a monk, until his past come in to crash his party. Most of your brother monks dead, including your mentor, you now seek vengeance on the affiliation you once served. With parts of his past remembered through the cut-scenes, youRedeemer is an In-Your-Face top-down hack and slash/shooter with an attitude. Once a soldier, you play as Vasily, who left his past in hopes of a peaceful future as a monk, until his past come in to crash his party. Most of your brother monks dead, including your mentor, you now seek vengeance on the affiliation you once served. With parts of his past remembered through the cut-scenes, you learn why Vasily came to be where he is. The game play is fast paced and brutal, with ample weapons, and environmental hazards to use in dispatching your enemies, the action is nearly nonstop. The stages are fairly linear with little in the way of exploration, with the exception of a few hidden scrolls and tablets to find. As you progress and find these tablets and scrolls you gain access to attacks, and abilities, broken between your Soldier training, and your Monk training. The game play gets repetitive at times, but that's to be expected from a Beat-Em-Up game. Skull bashing combos and devastating finishers are the bread and butter of this game, once the combat system is learned you can near effortlessly string attacks from one enemy to another, countering the whole way. If you like seriously visceral Beat-Em-Up Hack and Slash game play, Redeemer has that covered, what it lacks in exploration it compensates well with obliterating bad guys. Expand

If you want to smash some skulls with a chum then you will certainly enjoy the super-violent Redeemer: Enhanced Edition.

On paper, there’s a lot to like in Redeemer: melee combos, counter attacks, various weapons, environmental interaction, stealth kills, fun gore, and co-op. In practice, however, there’s little to get excited about. Redeemer – enhanced or not – feels painfully uninspired. All of its mechanics work, yet they do very little to enthuse. It’s the epitome of a game with few glaring issues but similarly no high points to prop it up. If, for whatever reason, you’re starved for top-down action games, it’s worth looking into. For the rest of us, it’s very much a “been there, done that” affair.

Redeemer: Enhanced Edition was a fun distraction for a few hours, but it’s very repetitive, and once you’ve completed it, there’s no real reason to go back and do so again unless you really want to challenge yourself with the harder difficulties. At $38.99, it has priced itself out of the market, especially if you have a capable PC and can get it for much less than half of that elsewhere. If you’re seriously needing a fix of an ultra violent brawler, it’s a decent playthrough, but there’s no real lasting appeal afterwards.
