What does Pixel Gladiator get right then? It actually gets a surprising amount right and something that it gets right is evident right from the get go for me because I must admit that I enjoyed the pixelated graphics. The biggest thing it gets right though is the amount of weapons that are available for you to use. There’s lots for you to use during the different rounds and the best thing is that each weapon feels considerably different so it makes trying each one out a worthwhile experience. Each weapon also makes you want to return back to the game as well because defeating the enemies always feels satisfying. As mentioned previously Pixel Gladiator is nice and simple but does it also challenge you? Yes it most certainly challenges you but it never becomes too overbearing. Instead it eases you in gently and then as you progress you notice the challenge to start ramping up especially when it comes to the boss battles. Speaking about the boss battles I found each boss to be pretty creative and defeating them always carried with it a nice sense of achievement. In fact defeating each enemy on the whole carried with it a nice sense of achievement thanks to the variety that’s present within each of them. Is there anything that Pixel Gladiator doesn’t get quite right? It would’ve been nice to have seen more content in the game because you’ve basically seen everything this game has to offer after only a couple of hours, which is a shame because the content it does have is pretty decent. My biggest gripe with Pixel Gladiator though is that the game doesn’t offer you much in terms of strategy so every stage basically plays out the same way which is fine in a way but a little bit more in terms of depth here would’ve made combating the enemies feel that little bit more important. If you’re one of those then who likes to be challenged but not overwhelmed when it comes to tower defense games then you’ll find plenty that you’ll like within Pixel Gladiator. I enjoyed it and I’m not the biggest fan of these types of games but for some reason this game kept drawing me back in and even though it isn’t perfect Pixel Gladiator gets the most important aspects spot on culminating in a decent and enjoyable experience for your Xbox One. Your goal is to massacre the local deadly creatures and survive for the glory of television.

The game is pretty straightforward. Their survival mode as well as three arena modes to test your skills in. Kill the monsters to obtain money. Use that money towards upgrading or repairing your defense as well as upgrading your arsenal. Each wave is randomly generated and will get more challenging as you plow through waves. Killing monsters in the range of your cameras near your base will increase the reward. After each round, you have downtime to upgrade what you can afford or hold off till later. The only time you get a game over is if you either die or your core in the center of your base gets destroyed. Once you die, it's back to square one.

Pros: Once you get the hang of things, Pixel Gladiator is pretty fun. The eight-bit style of music is enjoyable. The art style reminds me of old retro-style arcade games.

Cons: I wish it had a multiplayer option. Both couch multiplayer and online multiplayer.

    Rating: 7/10

Overall, this game is a fun and unforgiving game. RNG can be your best friend while other playthroughs are not. I see missed opportunities for not including multiplayer and hopefully, the devs are willing to consider it. I recommend this game for the gamer that loves a good challenge.
