    Overload is an enjoyable game. It won’t be for everyone, with the winding passages feeling too claustrophobic for some, but if you enjoyed the space shooter of the ‘90s and are feeling nostalgic, this is definitely a game that brings a unique experience to Xbox One.

    Overload is a wonderful throwback that feels more like a true sequel to Descent than that of a spiritual successor. The content-rich gameplay is as constantly hectic as its inspiration’s gameplay, complete with tight and responsive feedback, and a host of varied upgrades and unique weaponry to utilize. That being said, the developer would do well to swiftly address the game’s rather distracting performance issues.

    Overload's presentation is well done despite being a very small studio. I enjoyed the space combat elements because the controls were tight and responsive and combat always delivered a satisfying experience. The story stays interesting throughout which keeps you interested in what's goin to happens next. In terms of content there’s a solid amount available with enough variety present to keep your experience fresh and interesting. The AI difficulty of the game can seem a bit a la Mario Kart (aka cheap shots), at times which does make you experience somewhat frustrating at times. There isn’t a ton of variety present in the maps and weapons which can make the gameplay somewhat repetitive on occasion. Overload is a game that you don’t see very often these days but I love a good space shooter. Thankfully this game is a good space shooter, and if you enjoyed Descent then Overload is a must buy for you. From the moment you start the game then you’re greeted with good presentation that sets the tone extremely well and when the story starts gets to the core and all the twists and turns, you end up getting attached to the game experience. The gameplay will also keep you coming back for more as well because the space combat and shooting elements feel great and traversing feels fluid and responsive at all times. I will warn you though that the game’s difficulty can be a little overbearing at times and this does make it feel a tad unfair so prepare yourself for a few frustrating moments along the way. Thankfully though if you look past these frustrating moments you’ll be pleased to see that the game has a solid amount of content for you to get to sink your teeth into. More variety would’ve been nice when it came to the weapons and maps there’s still enough meat and potatoes within the content to keep things fresh. At the end of the day, Overload reminded of of the love I had for Decent and space shooters in general, as everything about the game is fun and thrilling. If you’re looking for an old-school experience then this is a game you must own, even if not you still may enjoy it.… Full Review »
