The simple fact is that outlast is the tensest, most chilling and purely horror based experience I have had the pleasure (or displeasure as the case may be) to play in a long time.

The reasons why this game are so effective stem from the fact that it is the exact opposite of how most games function. The majority of games aim to empower the player by putting them in difficult situations whilst giving them a huge amount of skills and actual powers with which to deal with them.

Outlast puts you in the worst situation imaginable and strips away everything that would give you a sense of security. No weapons, no way to fight back, no sense of safety, ever.

This sense of helplessness is compounded by excellent and creepy sound design and brilliant environmental design with excellent and incredibly atmospheric lighting.

This game also borrows a few tricks from an old favourite (silent hill 2) by sometimes confronting you with an enemy that is in sight but out of reach, say behind a set of bars. This means you can see something horrible, you now its there and you know that soon your going to be confronted with it but you have no idea of when this will happen, it's a hell of a way to ratchet up the tension.

And really that’s the best way to describe playing outlast, tense from the first second to the very last, the jump scares may be effective. However, its the tension of knowing something horrible might happen at any second but never knowing when that really gets to you.

Lastly the greatest praise I can give outlast is that it is the only horror game that has ever managed to really illicit a physical reaction from me, elevated pulse check, ragged breathing check, hairs standing up on edge check.

The first time I had to madly sprint away from an enemy in an attempt to find a hiding place my heart was racing so hard it felt like I had really just ran headlong in to the darkness searching for safety.

In my book that is an achievement that can not be overlooked.

Many people have mentioned problems with over simplistic level design or having to repeat sequences, whilst I cant say this is not true I don't feel it significantly detracts from what is overall an outstanding horror experience.

The only other game I have played that comes close to this is the Slender Man games and I definitely think this is a better overall game then Slender was. I mention Slender because it feels very close in terms of making you as a player feel totally helpless, it does not, however, have any of the visual flair, confidence and overall polish that outlast does.

    Verdict -

Outlast sets out to scare the pants off you and it definitely succeeds! If you want a tense, chilling and decidedly minimalistic horror experience then stop looking ..you have found it.

Interesting game. Probably my favorite horror game ever. THE SETTING is so perfect for the ultimate horror game...an....abandoned....insane......Asylum. The story is a little far fetched and weird (decent) but the gameplay will have you as nervous and scared as the character your playing as. Pop ups, people chasing after you, Hiding, this game has it all. Solid game I'm impressed

The sounds, the graphics, the overall atmosphere of this game and its DLC expansion (Whistleblower) are incredible. And for $30 you get about 8-9 hours of combined playing time....which is a lot of bang for your buck, when you consider there is NO down time here. If you're not running/hiding for your life you're waiting to haul a** from that next bloodthirsty loon.

The game honestly deserves a 9 if you're looking just at pacing and gameplay. There are a couple of instances where the fun bordered on frustration (due to an escape route that might have been TOO well hidden). I'm giving it a 10 because Red Barrels was incredibly brave/focused on producing the game they wanted to provide. Do NOT let your kids try this thing. I've never seen a game more deserving of its rating. But in the same breath, this is the first time in years I've seen horror done right in a video game. I'll be playing through it again on a higher difficulty ...and to record some more polished clips to share with friends....once I get my heart rate back under control.

When I can sit with my friends in the living room, turn on my console, and share good experiences, it's a good game.

Outlast is definitely one good game.

The jumpscares, the theories we made during gameplay, the fear of being in danger while playing.

    Beautifully crafted, loved it.

Outlast is actually a more tense than a scary title, with dark corners all the way, without mention the environment… Poorly visible all the time, most of the places will require your camera with night visions to see it through, so you better pick up any batteries you may find around.
The plot is sharp and convincing for the proposal it contains. I am not sure if I am convinced about the ending though, I haven’t played the DLC yet...
Outlast is one of those games that gives you freedom to create an interpretation of its meaning, just like Silent Hill for example, even though there is a ˜logical explanation˜ inside its events, it is never logical enough to fill all the answers lying in our heads, that is part of the mystery that circles the immersion of this game and survivor horrors alike.
Outlast has enemies, bosses… And all you can do is run and hide, which provides the game an intense and tense situation to be concerned about, if you want to find jump scares, this one doesn’t provide much of them, if you want jump scares and **** on your pants, go to Layers of Fear instead…
Outlast has good graphics (for an indie game, let it be clear and for a 3GB sized game), good gameplay, outstanding art direction and terrific AI on enemies… At least the most noticeable… I wish the game should`ve lasted a little longer, it wouldn’t hurt… More situations and more things to do on the game would be awesome… I had the feeling that the ending happened in the middle of the playthrough, and that was like taking back that cake was given to me.

So, my verdict about it: I really enjoyed the game but at the same time I felt like half of the experience with this game was taken from me! I am not complaining that is too short, I am complaining that it looked shorted, when it should be bigger taking in consideration its own proportions from the story itself.

Pretty much after 30 minutes of playing, I wanted to get the hell out of that place as soon as possible. This is the best compliment a horror game could receive. So why the low score? The gameplay itself is a chore and overall not fun. While the game has good concepts, the execution is a mess. The run/hide mechanic sounds great, but the hiding only seems to work 1/10 of the time. And getting caught and beaten starts to get really annoying. I wanted to put up with it, but there's only so much restarting you can take. I really wish you had a gun in the game, so you could take out your horror on those guys. It would have felt so satisfying. Also, the hiding in a locker is pretty boring, and it seems to take forever for the monster guys to leave. On top of that, I never really felt scared in the game, just grossed out. This game had so much going for it, it feels like a big disappointment. I think if they went to the supernatural, under the skin type of horror, this game would have been one of the scariest games ever, but the in your face type horror didn't do much for me except make me want to puke :( Expand

Definitely not for the faint of heart. You'll witness some truly horrific acts. The disturbing moments, extreme violence, and creepy atmosphere make for a truly unsettling horror experience that will stick with you long after you've completed it. The chase sequences will get your blood pumping and pulse racing as you desperately try to lose your pursuers. The story at the core of things is decent, but it's the side-stories found in case files scattered around the asylum and the personal notes one will get from recording and documenting certain events that really get under your skin. Especially since the final act takes a turn for the less-frightening as you move away from the dark hallways of the asylum in favor of the brighter-lit underground laboratory locations. Admittedly, I appreciated the moment to catch my breath after being constantly on the edge up until that point, and it does seem like the next most reasonable place for the narrative to go. Still, the game ends on a slightly flatter note as a result.

Your gameplay experience with Outlast will be plagued with dread to the point where it may even be hard to keep going at times due to apprehension about what may be around the next corner. As terrifyingly exhilarating it is to narrowly escape with your life when running from one of the asylum's deformed denizens, these moments can also be pretty frustrating. The game's tendency to every now and then force you into a more contained section of the asylum where an enemy or two relentlessly patrols the area while you must do things like reach pumps to drain the path forward in order to progress gets old fast. They are scary at first, but can quickly become tedious in the face of several repeated attempts. Something that can drain the fear from Outlast and make players want to move on for entirely different reasona.

The complaints I have didn't do much to lessen my enjoyment of the game though. Especially since it's a pretty brief experience. The originality is what will win you over and ultimately scare the pants off of you. There's nothing quite like stealthily making your way through pitch black corridors with only your camera's night-vision mode to guide you and an ever-rapidly draining battery. It's like the first ever found-footage style video game and it's a blast to play.

Where Outlast succeeds, it absolutely hits it out of the park, with visuals and sound design second to none and a few mechanics sure to get your adrenaline on overdrive. Sadly, some notable shortcomings stemming from design in addition to a fairly weak story keep Outlast from reaching its true potential.

Playing as the world's most bat**** dedicated journalist Miles Upshur, you investigate Mount Massive Asylum in hopes of uncovering a story following a tip about inhumane experiments being conducted there. Outlast succeeds in hooking you right from the start, with you asking questions as to what happened in the asylum. The game, for better and worse, tells you a story hidden in its collectible documents and environment. It really ingrains the mystery and incentives you to hunt for clues as a journalist should, but you'll be scratching your head at the underwhelming plot. There is a sense of effort in the plot, but it's a shame where it heads (somewhere really stupid). The finale is absolute dog sh*t not because of what occurs, but rather the lack of payoff. The game makes a sudden 180 turn towards the end and replaces the intriguing mystery for pseudoscience and corporate backstabbing, both of which failed to get me invested.

The real bread and butter of Outlast is how it plays. Encountering the game's numerous monstrosities, Miles cannot fight but rather must rely on his ability to run and hide from them. Equipped with your camera, you can use night vision in the dark spaces littered throughout the game which drains batteries faster than my savings. Said batteries are scarce until the end of the game, which highlights the risk-reward system and increases the tension when snooping in the dark. When you're spotted, the game's music cranks to dial 9 which is an indicator for you to get the hell out of dodge and book it. Luckily, Miles is quite a runner himself with the game allowing you to vault over objects as you try to flee your pursuers. There are plenty of instances in the game such as this which serves as Outlast's strongest aspect. It gets your blood going as you make split second decisions turning corners and choosing to hide or risk being torn to pieces. Unfortunately some mechanics don't hold up quite as well. For instance, crawling in the game is absolutely useless as you move slower than a snail's pace, which makes sneaking useless compared to just running past enemies. And speaking of running past enemies, Outlast's AI is quite predictable, to the point of zapping the tension and horror out of the game. It's easy to tell that they don't actually follow you, but rather the path you take and it's through this that you can juke them out, making the rest of the game a breeze even on higher difficulties. One other sin the game commits is that at every obstacle, the game asks of you to either: find a key or turn 2-3 valves to advance. It's not exactly bad, but it often pulled me out of the experience over how video-gamey it felt juxtaposed to the lack of any other mechanics, making the exploration/running/hiding combo your only means of interacting with this world. It's solid, but bare bones which isn't bad at all when you're focusing on your strengths, to which Outlast excels.

If there's anything that's almost flawless about Outlast, it's the visual and audio. The graphical fidelity of the game many times borders on photorealistic and while an insane asylum isn't an exactly original horror setting, it's filled with enough variety to keep it fresh throughout. This sort of quality extends to the audio which trades subtlety in exchange for a brash and blood curdling score. The music absolutely hits its stride as you're being chased and when you're not, accompanies the game's sometimes effective jumpscares and quieter moments. It won't win any awards, but it's extremely fitting.

Among all things, hearing that Outlast is one of the scariest games ever has me scratching my head. I know that fear is subjective and all that , but Outlast's failure to scare me isn't so much how little it did rather how hard they tried. Throughout the entire 4.5 hour campaign I was bombarded by an endless amount of corpses, blood, and jumpscares that it ultimately desensitized me about 1/3 of the way through. This slaughterhouse approach to horror is more disgusting than terrifying. The lack of scares also extends to enemy design, which is intimidating at best. The best thing I can say about Outlast's attempts at horror is that it's thrilling, which I attribute more to fun, not s***ing my pants.

Even with its shortcomings, Outlast is a solid game with it's chase sequences and audiovisual design worth the discounted $5, just don't expect a "horror masterpiece". If you also came to see hulking madmen wielding cleavers with their dongs hanging out, Outlast delivers.

Only once did I encounter a glitch where a boss was right on top of me in a hiding spot, by all counts should have killed me, but simply turned around and continued searching.

As beautiful as Outlast looks, it pales in comparison to how it sounds. Samuel Laflamme's soundtrack is the perfect compliment to Miles' heavy breathing, both in the quiet moments and not-so-quiet. The first time you get spotted, screaming and screeching violins announce that the chase is on, and it does wonders to get your heart pounding.

The nature of Outlast's gameplay makes the pace slow. Some sections of the asylum are relatively straight forward, with locked door after locked door leading you down a specific path, while some encounters give you a multitude of halls to run down and rooms to hide in. Sure enough, you're going to slip up. You're going to be found hiding under that bed, you're going to sprint around that corner and come face to face with a dead end with a psycho right on your heels, and it's these moments of sheer panic that define the experience. Even the two or three longer chase sequences that have a great deal of scripting never feel like control is being taken away from you, and serve as some of the game's most intense moments.
I never played Outlast for more than an hour at a time, and this speaks volumes about it's atmosphere. The game's first impression is it's all about jump scares, but an hour in, I realized that it wasn't just the scares themselves, but how nervous you got, trying to figure out when and where the next one will take place. Even when I saw them coming, they got me every time. Like most survival horror titles, nothing will compare to your first time through. Savor it.

As with most other horror titles, replay value is in the eyes of the beholder. While subsequent playthroughs may have the tension taken away from knowing what's around the corner, the 'Insane' difficulty offers up the challenge of getting through the game without checkpoints. If you slip up, it's all the way back to the beginning. While veterans with a good memory can clock a playthrough around an hour, the $20 admission fee is more than a bargain for what will surely be a 4-6 hour journey your first time through.

I was somewhat disappointed when I gained entry to the female ward, and didn't find myself running from a single psychopath of the fairer sex. Past survival horror entries have proven that some of the scariest enemies are women, yet every single variant encountered in the game is male.

Though it is not without a few flaws, Outlast is a game no horror fan should pass up. It's also a fantastic game to make your more squeamish friends watch. A few frustrating moments aside, it is without a doubt, one of the most frightening games I have ever experienced.

Outlast is a horror survival video game, It was published by Red Barrels. The original release date was September 4th in 2014. It costs around $20.You can play it on a Playstation 4 or on a Xbox one. The game may come free with an xbox one. Philippe Morin and David Chateauneuf are the designers. It is a single player game.

In the game you are a freelance investigative journalist, Miles Upshur, who ventures to Lake county,Colorado to investigate a psychiatric hospital located deep in the mountains. The hospital is not in the best condition and there are mental patients everywhere doing insane things. The reporter got an anonymous tip that there is unhuman experiments going on there. These experiments helped the patients escape and they have killed many of the workers. There are few workers that are alive but all of them have gone crazy. Your mission is to escape without being killed.

I was playing with two of my friends on a Xbox one. At the start of the game when you arrive in the hospital my first reaction was ew. There were dead bodies everywhere. One of our first mission was to find an key card to get into the security room. It took us awhile because we didn't notice one of the rooms. Once we did that we had to go to the basement to turn on the generator. The main killer was chasing us so it took us awhile to complete our mission. The next mission was tricky so after dying a million times we looked up how to finish the mission. We had to do that for a few more missions. As the game goes on it gets scarier and more intense. When my friend took over about 3 missions in it got very scary.

Overall it is a fun game but I would not recommend kids younger than 12 playing. It had nudity and foul language. Also it may give your children nightmares if they watch it due to the scary characters and plot. I enjoyed this game very much it always had you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what is going to happen next.

It is a great horror experience, if you enjoy being in anguish all the time that is. Expand

The game features several tense moments and spooky imagery throughout its 6 hour length. Horror fans should get a kick out of it. I would rate it with an 8 out of 10. Expand

Dull, boring and repetitive. Literally nothing happens of note. Don't believe the positive reviews, this is a mess.

The game is nothing more than a Hide n' Seek simulator. Save your money for something worth your time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game in it's self is very good, interesting and horrifying. Outlast doesn't desperately try to explain it self, it tells the story through the true victims. If you just want to play and don't care about the story, the game doesn't make you see story. Graphics are amazing- if you don't look too close. Mount massive asylum is just huge place with plenty of stuff to see. It doesn't make you bored ever. There is prison, severs, administration block, church, courtyard and underground secret laboratory.

It's a good game but has some, not-so-serious problems. The game can be glitchy some times. I think that they didn't complete testing before publishing the game. Second problem is that the game isn't so long. It takes 6 to 8 hours to complete(if you're not bad). Also sometimes Outlast repeats it's self too much. Turn these to valves and run. Then press this button and go back where you came. It's fun but i wouldn't use the same idea for more than 2 to 3 times.

But in the end the game is pretty solid and knows what it wants to be. If the game knows something, it's how to set the mood. Sometimes i didn't think it's a game- i lived through the game.

Got the horror part right, level design was really good but a bit too linear at times especially if you are replaying it. The antagonists are great as well. Very immersive game as well.

Let it be known that Outlast is a genuinely stressful and nerve-racking experience, but that’s exactly what a true survival horror game should be, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

A chilling and well-realised experience, Outlast accomplishes almost everything it sets out to do. A strong start for the team and a strong entry in this resurgent genre.
