Nine Witches: Family Disruption from Blowfish Studios is an indie adventure game that tries to recapture the magic of Lucas Arts Adventure games like Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and Day of the Tentacle. You play as both Alexei Krakovitz, a wheelchair-bound professor with paranormal abilities, and his Japanese assistant Akiro. Due to the professor’s expertise in the supernatural, he’s been chosen by Norway’s Prime Minister to investigate a secret occult branch of the Nazi military after they let loose an ancient curse that plunges the town of Sundӓe into darkness. You’ll spend most of your time as Akiro doing physical tasks such as solving puzzles and shooting Nazis, though you are able to switch to Professor Krakovitz at any time. He can’t use his arms or legs due to paralysis, but is able to communicate with spirits, and eventually even bend certain malleable minds to his will. The enemy is the Okkulte-55, a secret division of the Third Reich. They have set a plan in motion that they hope will win them the war, but at a devastating cost to humanity. Their antics have caused a dark moon to appear, and the denizens of Sundӓe have not seen daylight for some time. Krakovitz and Akiro go undercover as a German movie director and his assistant, to infiltrate the town and attend a very exclusive party being held by Nazi officers, all in order to thwart their plans. Blowfish Studios is fashionably known for their many great games on Xbox One and Nine Witches: Family Disruption I no exception to this history. If you’re a fan of their robust library on Xbox consoles over the years, be sure to check out this latest title from them in the Xbox digital games store. Expand

A fresh breath of air, Nine Witches has whacky charm. There were only a few things that could have used a tune-up but even those don’t deter from a great time. I finished it in around five hours and loved every minute. An even longer adventure would have been awesome. The mixture of combat and talking to ghosts really set it aside as a unique gem among the genre. Sometimes the story was a little hard to follow but the pacing was still perfect. I never felt anything was rushed or too slow. The writing and humor were incredible. My hope is that more content with the same characters will be created. It’s franchise-worthy in my opinion!

Nine Witches: Family Disruption on Xbox doesn’t reinvent the graphic-adventure wheel, and you won’t find it on any end-of-year lists. What it does do, though, is tell a spooky, kooky story, tickle your ribs as it does it, and wrap it all in a frustration-free experience. Having saved the world with them, we’d happily follow Alexei and Akiro to other supernatural jaunts.
