    Nightmare Boy is a very intriguing game that tries to take the platformer style and in some ways tries to put its own unique twist on the usual style. It does have a few shortcomings though and these can be a problem from time to time, but I definitely appreciate the effort that has gone into the game. Every mechanic in the game feels finely tuned and that is definitely evident in the platforming, which in turn makes the platforming both fun and enjoyable. I would however have liked to have seen more variety when it came to the level design because unfortunately most of the levels are a little generic in design. What the game does really well is that it eases you in gently and this is something I appreciated greatly because some platformers can become too difficult to soon. They have also done a good job with the controls and thankfully they remain fluid and responsive throughout. The control scheme is also simple and this allows you to focus on the action that’s taking place on screen instead of worrying about complicated controls. The game’s story leaves a lot to be desired. Don’t get me wrong it’s always nice to have a story in a game like this but I must admit that I did want more from it. The game also doesnt boast much in terms of replay value and once completed you won’t return to the game, which is a shame because I quite enjoyed it. The presentation side of the game is something that I liked a lot, especially when it came to the visuals. The hand drawn art style is very nice to look at and the 90’s style makes the game stand out quite a bit. At the end of the day fans of the platforming genre will appreciate Nightmare Boy quite a lot. It does get a few things wrong every now and then, but I appreciate them thinking outside of the box and this thought process means the game has more enjoyable things than bad things going for it. Nightmare Boy is not the best platformer out there, but it does more than enough to get a recommendation from me.… Expand

    I went into Nightmare Boy not knowing what to expect. After multiple playthroughs, I can say I’ve really enjoyed everything the game has to offer. If after completing the game you’re looking for something to further the replay value, some of the achievements offered challenge players to complete the game without dying, without saving or even without killing any of the little friendly slime creatures riddled throughout the game. If you’re looking for a solid, challenging Metroidvania game to fill your free time, Nightmare Boy may be just what you’re looking for!

    I love the visuals, I adore the soundtrack and I feel the huge open world that is being delivered is ripe for exploration purposes. But the sheer ruthlessness of the bosses that have caged the poor children is just a bit too much to bear, as is the struggle back from the checkpoint after they have wiped you out for what seems like the millionth time.

    A most effective metroidvania with referents such as such as Decap Attack, Cool Spot or Global Gladiatiors. But is not another game built on nostalgia, it takes his predecessor to achieve it's own personality. A solid gameplay and a beautiful art design complete a game that should be and instant classic for arcade lovers.
