Mutant Football League has come on leaps and bounds over the last few months and the amount of tweaks and changes that have been implemented have satisfied me a great deal, which in turn shows that the developers have been listening to us gamers. The biggest tweaks and changes have definitely come in the controls and mechanics departments. The controls hold up extremely well and over time they’ve become more fluid and responsive, which of course makes the game even more fun. When I first started playing the game I must admit that it did feel a little unfair but since then they’ve rectified this almost perfectly and each mechanic now feels fair and most important of all realistic. Not all areas have seen improvements though and the game still suffers with a few technical issues, but I have full faith that the developers will sort these problems out. In terms of content the game has plenty for you to sink your teeth into and most important of all most of the modes are an absolute blast to play. You will however need to get used to the controls and this does take time because they can be quite confusing and there isn’t much in the way of an explanation unfortunately. Thankfully though this is only a small problem and you will definitely forget about this when your immersed in the fantastic old-school and nostalgic gameplay. The presentation side of the game is absolutely awesome. Visually the game has a very retro feel to it but it also has modern touches here and there which is nice. The sound design is packed full of humour and some of the humour is actually pretty funny and it definitely got a chuckle out of me at times. At the end of the day Mutant Football League is perfect for those who want to take a trip down memory lane, it also has the added bonus of being perfect for newcomers to the genre as well. I have seen this game grow over time and I’m very pleased with the way the game is heading and in my opinion I can see it getting better and better. It does still have a few niggling problems but these aren’t too troubling and they don’t stop me from giving the game a big thumbs up. Expand

The best Football game on the market right now.

It doesn't have MTXs and lootboxes, but it has: Blood - check; Post-play mayhem - check; Dirty Tricks - check; Funny commentaries and parody names - check; Multiple teams and arenas - check; Satisfying football mechanics - check. It's an arcade sport game, not a sport simulator or sport manager, easy to pick up and enjoy football

Under $20 for base game and only $30 for Dynasty Edition are best deals on the market.

When I initially received Mutant Football League, it was a broken, horribly unfair mess of a sports title. While I am happy to report the majority of the worst issues have been resolved in the full release, the game is still a bit broken.

When I initially received Mutant Football League, it was a broken, horribly unfair mess of a sports title. While I am happy to report the majority of the worst issues have been resolved in the full release, the game is still a bit broken.

The biggest frustration I experienced previously pertained to weird penalties that were called, often back to back, for random irrelevant issues that were in no way associated with football, such as political social media posts or insulting the ref’s mother. This has been toned down quite a bit; however, it has been replaced with AI that will regularly go off sides and attack your quarterback, essentially killing him (and any reserves), forcing you to forfeit. While this didn’t occur nearly as often as the previous issue, it is a bit frustrating and did result in breaking my perfect season.

Aside from the issue mentioned above, the AI is now much more balanced and is less likely to breakaway or become unstoppable when running for the end zone, as this was a pretty big annoyance when the title was in Early Access. The game is certainly more enjoyable now, but it still fails to live up to set expectations.

The visuals are still a bit rough around the edges, but the frame rate has been evened out, resulting in the game being a bit more appealing to watch. The controls have been improved and are much more responsive, working almost identically to the Madden franchise. The football aspect of the game is solid, but the overly violent player deaths and on field destruction is not nearly as satisfying as it could and should be. Sadly, the post play battles are still overly short, hard to control, and appear to be animated using character models from the mid 90’s Die Hard Arcade brawler.

The online features are now working in full force, although in the times I’ve attempted to battle it out on the gridiron, no other players have been present. I was able to play some PvP with friends locally, which was pretty fun; however, the remainder of the package is a bit lacking. The MFL only features a handful of teams, none of which are too different or stand out aside from their numeric rankings – if you’ve played as one team, you’ve played as them all.

Mutant Football League works well as a budget football title, but the otherworldly aspects that made the original such a joy to play are lackluster and come across as nothing but a disappointment. If you are looking for an alternative to Madden, there isn’t much else on the market, so this title will serve you well in that aspect. For those of us that want to relive the glory days of the original, we’re best left to dusting off the classic console and leaving this title on the sidelines.

I have friends who don't like sports games at all... and they all love Mutant Football League. Easy to learn, challenging to master, and always hilariously entertaining. It just never, ever gets old.

This game is a dream come true to someone that played the original on the Genesis. It's a classic that's been updated to modern standards. Everything you loved from the original is there, including trick plays and the ridiculous quotes from players. To top it all off, the announcer for the game is done by the same announcer as NBA Jam from back in the day.

It's hilarious to me that one of the reviewers here doesn't understand that the BS penalties are part of the game! That was in the original game, it's a joke! Bribe the ref and do it to the the team. Awesome game.

When are getting Mutant Hockey League?!

Well worth the 25 year wait for the re imagining of the Sega Genesis classic. The development team went well above and beyond creating a game that's challenging and entertaining at the same time. The commentary is top notch and hilarious throughout each match. The routine updating and addition of new teams, stadiums and mutants keep it new and fun to play.

The development team listens to the fans and give them exactly what they want. Not many games out there that you can help contribute to the game and even become part of the game in certain circumstances.
Easily the most played game on my console. Highly recommended for any level of gamer whether you are a football fan or not.

No loot boxes. DLC are cheap and not necessary (but nice addition if you like the base game)

The only game that more i drink and smoke the better i become.
You don't need a clear sober head to become champions. just aggression.
A fun childish game for an adult.

This game is just amazing. I've bought it on 3 platforms because I like it so much. From the dark humor to the music it just never gets old.
The dirty tricks in the game keeps each match random and will keep you guessing.
Content and game modes wise I think it's a little bit shallow. It would be cool to be able to start a player career with a custom character. Or a dynasty mode where

Also being able to watch (instant) replays would be a nice feature.

I hope there will be a 2nd game and it will have some of the features I just mentioned. Anyway I would buy it.

Nit-picky things aside, you end up with a game that plays easier than Madden, is downright hilarious, and won’t break the bank to purchase. It really could use a full set of teams (then maybe some fake ones) and players that can speak English, but it doesn’t take long for the game to remind you why you are playing in the first place – to kick the snot out of your opponent by any means necessary.

Mutant Football League sits within this limbo where it looks at what it can be, and just shrugs. To be fair, if somebody were to ask me if they should buy this game, I’d shrug too. It’s not the best game on the market in this genre, and I’m sure it’s not the worst. It’s just a mediocre attempt at making a spoof-esque game.

Mutant Football League really impressed me if you couldn’t tell. You know if you’ve read some of my previous reviews that I’m a big football fan, so I’m sure that plays a big role in this. I do think non-fans would have fun as well, just as arcade goers did in the late 90’s with NFL Blitz. Maybe it’s been too long since we have had anything other than Madden to please football fans, or maybe MFL is really just that good, either way I really like it and find myself going back to it over and over despite its vanilla modes at this point. Mutant Football League has character that I haven’t seen in a parody game in many years and look forward to what Digital Dreams has to come for the franchise.
