Considering Monster Slayers lacks a proper story, doesn’t look anything special and has a fair few issues in terms of navigating the menus and such, you’d think I’d be putting you off it. Far from it though, because the card and class variety, decent range of enemies and easy to pick up gameplay are spot on; they are integral parts to an incredibly addictive experience.

Monster Slayer is a well built game for anyone that likes rogue-like games, where you'll find yourself dying over and over again and having to restart. I like the graphics and the layout, but it just wasn't my kind of game. I may never be a Monster Slayer, but that doesn't mean you can't give this game a chance. Try it out, you may just find that you like it!

I have a few friends who’ve told me multiple times that they really enjoyed Monster Slayers on the PC, so without a doubt I was definitelyI have a few friends who’ve told me multiple times that they really enjoyed Monster Slayers on the PC, so without a doubt I was definitely looking forward to trying the game out on the Xbox One. Thankfully as far as rogue-like adventures go it’s actually pretty decent, but unfortunately it does suffer with a few issues which in turn does stop the game from reaching its full potential. It does however get more things right than it gets wrong and the biggest thing it gets right for me is the different classes you can play. There are six classes for you to get to grips with in the game and the amount of variety each class has is great. Each class plays completely different and by doing this it keeps the gameplay fresh and interesting for longer. Speaking about the gameplay it can be very fun at times and I loved the easy to pick up and play style they went with. This easy to pick up and play style is very important in my opinion because the difficulty can be a problem at times and you will no doubt get a little frustrated every now and then. Thankfully though despite the gameplay feeling a little unbalanced at times the game does try and help you along the way. It does this by offering you a lot of upgrades and unlockables as you progress through the game and these unlockables and upgrades actually help you, which is great. This means that the frustration levels never get too high so you will return to the game time and time again. Returning to the game isn’t a problem because in terms of content the game offers you a decent amount and there is quite a bit of replayability present. I would however have liked more of a story to combine with this content because the story they do have is definitely a little on the basic side, which is a shame. There is also a problem when it comes to the game’s UI as well because it’s quite clear that the game was originally meant for the PC so expect some awkwardness to creep in quite a bit. The presentation side of the game thankfully doesn’t have any problems and I found this aspect of the game to be very enjoyable. Visually the game has a lot of charm and when you combine this with the very good sound design you do end up enjoying the game more in a way. At the end of the day as far as rogue-like adventures go Monster Slayers doesn’t do anything new or different, but that’s not a bad thing because why mess with a formula that clearly works so well. Without a doubt the game would’ve gotten an higher score from me if it didn’t suffer with the niggling problems it has, but in the end it does do enough to get a recommendation from me. Full Review »
