Like Hotline Miami and other action puzzlers, Katana Zero's side scrolling levels are tightly designed with multiple possible ways to hack and slash my way through them. Katana Zero's protagonist is a gritty, urban samurai and his toolkit of abilities is small enough to quickly develop muscle memory around but adaptable enough to make the combat encounters varied. He has a sword: good for stabbing enemies directly, deflecting bullets, or smashing down doors to kill anyone unfortunate enough to be standing near them. What I love about the combat is, like the story, it never came close to overshadowing everything else in the game. The actual gameplay mechanics are quite limited, and anytime it can feel a mission is going on too long, Katana Zero takes a hard left back into the story-driven content. Even though the frustration was the word in my mind the whole time I played the game it's really worth my time and money . Expand

A fantastic premise that falls on its face at later levels. The 1 is just for enjoying the first 5 missions, everything else is broken and inconsistent garbage.

Man what a fantastic game. The music, the story, the pixel art… it’s all fantastic. And above all, the gameplay is fast, smooth, and so so satisfying when you master the mechanics. This game is fast paced and frantic. This is especially true on the harder difficulty which really tests your mettle and throws a few new enemies at you (and a crap ton of regular enemies too!). You have no health, so if you get hit once… that’s it. You’re dead. But once you pour some time into it and really get used to the gameplay mechanics, things start to slow down and the game becomes this wonderful series of strategic choices that you can make on the fly. And while I didn’t expect it, I actually began to speedrun the game trying to clear it as fast as I possibly could. It was aggravating, infuriating, super difficult, and immensly fun. If you want to see something truly impressive just take a look at some of the videos of speedrunners burning through the levels that consistently obliterate you.
This isn’t a long game at all, you can beat it in about 5 or 6 hours, little more if you try and collect everything. But the real value in it, for me at least, is the replayability. I really had a blast playing through it a second time on the harder difficulty you unlock after your first run through and had even more fun speedrunning it after that. There are even some collectible weapons that you can use to change up the gameplay a bit and give it some added replayability.
Overall, If you enjoy action platformers and want a bit of a challenge. Pick this game up and give it a shot. I really enjoyed it and ended up putting way more time into it than I thought I would.

I absolutely loved this game, fresh gameplay idea, brain melting story, and fun 80s tunes. Not for everyone. But absolutely for me.

Katana Zero is a piece of art. Despite the many irritations because I couldn't get through certain levels, it was addictive to discover the try and error gameplay. Buen juego, corto pero intenso, la historia es decente , en general no es un mal juego para pasar la tarde.

First of all, I played this game with gamepass so I didn't really wanted it but got it and play it because I think everyone should every game a try. But because I didnt pay for it this will influence my metacritic score.

So for me the game is a 7 because the game does a lot of things right and my only two complains with the game are; first the game is way too short which then concludes my second complain that there is too much text.

Okay so the game has too much text imo. I have to inform you that I am a really really slow reader and it is not my strong suit. But the game is too fun to have this much text in it and don't get me wrong because the dialogue's are interesting and they are good and you are given many dialogue options which I like. But still it feels like it doesn't really belong in this game.

So this let me wonder why so much text and that came clear when I finished the game. It was really short but powerfull because of the world and its writing. This game is in my opinion just a promo of a new series of game and it was a damn good promo!

For the gameplay I just have to say watch a video or just the trailer and your sold if you like 2D sidescroller games. The gameplay is the best sellingpoint of the game and it won't dissapoint you!

So in conclusion if you have gamepass just try this game already it is good but just too short.

Katana ZERO on Xbox One and through Xbox Game Pass offers another simplistically violent video game at first glance, but before long the game starts playing with your perceptions, and by that point you are invested until the conclusion. And with several different endings and speedrun abilities to unlock, you could find yourself coming back more than once.
