John Wick Hex is a fast-paced, action-oriented strategy game that makes you think and strike like John Wick, the professional hitman of the critically acclaimed film franchise. If you’re used to turn-based strategy games, then John Wick Hex immediately pulls the rug from under you. It was always going to give you control of lone-wolf Wick rather than a squad, but it didn’t stop it from feeling alien to move one solitary unit around a map in a turn-based tactics game. Turn a corner to find yourself ambushed and there’s no one else to cover you’re back – you’re going to stay ambushed. Find yourself low on health, and there’s no opportunity to push up a different unit. John Wick Hex forces you to own your mistakes, and you will make plenty of them. The story that's told here ties nicely into the events of the John Wick movie franchise, and fans will no doubt be pleased to see the likes of Ian McShane and Lance Reddick reprise their roles as Charon and Winston, with Troy Baker also joining in the fun as the titular Hex, an angry man with a bloody score to settle. It's all told through graphic novel-style cutscenes that bookend each of the action-packed levels and, although it doesn't particularly go anywhere interesting or throw up any real surprises, it certainly gives proceedings a nice air of authenticity having the actors from the movies lend their voices to the tale – and Austin Wintory's score does a wonderful job of setting the right mood.

While not the best movie based game out there, John Wick Hex is far from the worst as well. It’s got an interesting story that is cannon within the movies’ timeline, and some of the actual actors, aside from Keanu, reprising their roles adds some authenticity to its commitment of being more than just a simple cash grab most movie based games tend to be. While you might not feel completely like the deadly Baba Yaga from the movies, you’ll still feel like quite a badass hitman once you learn John Wick Hex’s intricacies.

John Wick Hex tries to put us in the shoes of John Wick, but it succeeds partially in this: while the timeline-based gameplay is great to make us experience all the choices John faces every single second during a fight, we've got too few tactical options. The clunky animations don't help to reproduce the trademark fights choreographies, too.

A movie tie-in that thinks outside of the box, John Wick Hex is an unexpected and unique strategy game with more than a few neat ideas up its impeccably tailored sleeve. Yet, a steep difficulty curve, some fiddly controls, and a frustrating sense of repetition cramp its style. However, cool heads and sharp wits will prevail.
