Princess Kitty has little chance against her evil foes, and if they somehow get past you and arrive at her feet, then it’s game over, and all current progress is lost. Platform games are renowned for being tough and having plenty of replay value. If you then blend in RPG elements, you have a recipe for an addictive game that draws you back for more. This is the case with Jet Set Knights, no matter how many times you fail, you always dust yourself off, and try again. For a game that at first glance appears to be light on premise and context, it turned out to be quite in depth and challenging. With a blend of several genres and roguelite elements which causes you to lose all of your progress, there is a lot at stake each time you play. For the price Of admission almost all the Ratalaika games are worth picking up, especially for the achievement hunters. I appreciate Ratalaika for being so supportive of the Xbox brand even if most of the releases which occur almost weekly are arcade styled I my self love a retro feeling game even on my Xbox One, Expand

I had a really good time with this one. Typical Ratalaika fashion easy achievements and tons of fun. You can choose from four different Knights, and they all have unique abilities. You have to protect a princess by keeping enemies off of her by building walls, traps, and fighting waves of various enemy types. The enemies are adorable, and fit well with the level you are on. The same can be said for the bosses. You will battle adorable slime Octopus and giant Cupcakes. Just a lot of really well designed and fun characters to see in this one. The princess is adorable as well with her little pigtails. The whole game design is just quality in my opinion. All the way down to the mini games, music, and bonuses you can obtain. It’s a modern retro that really gives you everything you loved about games of the past with doses of things that are current that will keep you coming back to it.

There is so many things to unlock, and hidden things to find you can play it far after you’ve got that complete Achievement score. Like daily bonus and roulette wheel that lets you spend coin to unlock special abilities. I kept playing it far after I collected my 1,000. When you beat the boss for the level it isn’t over it just picks up pace and becomes more of a challenge. That is something I love about most Ratalaika releases. They set the Achievements up for the people grabbing the game for the score, but leave plenty after that for the people who enjoy the games as well. It’s also a pretty cool couch coop game as well. It’s one you will enjoy playing with your friends a ton. It has some RPG elements, but it’s more Roguelike. Like you can level up, but it’s just for that run. The perks/abilities you unlock though stick with you. So it’s something you can step away from , and come back to and not feel lost. It’s also one of those games you can pick up before bed or dinner when you just have a few minutes to do a nice little run.

So check out the video review below if you’d like a more in depth look at the game play. I really feel most retro gaming fans will find the joy in this one easy. It has that one run type quality of old school arcade titles like Donley Kong. Not every one has hours and hours to sit in front of their television gaming, and games like this that are short and sweet really do fill that need. I could take a break to relax and sit down with this one today, tomorrow, or years from now and still have the same enjoyable experience.

First up, if you have an Arcade style stick and button controller for your console setup, please make sure you use it with this game, you will not regret it!

Jet Set Knights brings back the good old arcade style 2D games you use to sink money into after school. You play as a knight who must protect the princess at all costs from hundreds of evil monsters. The Princess is always stationed at the bottom of the level and you have the ability to build up a wooded wall each side of her to help with the protection. These walls do take damaged from the monsters and will fall but can be rebuilt if you have the wood to do it, so make sure to collect as much as you can when available.

You can also collect bricks which will let you build robot style defences, these too will take damaged from the monsters and will also need to be rebuilt if needed. You will notice through out the game the different style of monsters that have come to attack the princess. Each monster takes a different amount of hits to be killed. The game also offers a number of different weapons, you start off with a sword but you can then obtain arrows, fire arrow, ice arrows, a spear which I like to call the spear of destiny which kills the monsters with a single touch and also works wonders on the Boss battles.

There are also items that can freeze time, turn you into a pac-man style monster, health etc. The objective of each level is to defect the boss battle which I noticed comes randomly after a certain amount of waves. We have Giant Octopus and Ape bosses through to Snowman bosses and so on. There are five different levels with the ability to keep playing them with wave after wave. Once you defect the boss tho, you will unlock the next level but if you die without defecting the boss, its back to the start of the level for you.

The game also offers a mini game section as well as a gambling section in the form of a slot machine where you can use the coins you have collected to try and get the jackpot to unlock new abilities.

Wait there is more….Jet Set Knights also has Multiplayer! Yes you will have great fun playing alone but even more fun with up to four players local co-op.

Overall the game is fantastic and I highly recommend playing it for that retro arcade memories!

Overall i would give this game a 6.3/10, it was overall an enjoyable game and needs some improvements but i did enjoy the pixel style of the enemies but i will go over the improvements needed to finish up what could be a 9 or 10/10 game, firstly it didn’t feel like there was a point after you beat the boss of the stage that it was to continue after it as nothing really happens once a bossOverall i would give this game a 6.3/10, it was overall an enjoyable game and needs some improvements but i did enjoy the pixel style of the enemies but i will go over the improvements needed to finish up what could be a 9 or 10/10 game, firstly it didn’t feel like there was a point after you beat the boss of the stage that it was to continue after it as nothing really happens once a boss is defeated but the enemies spawn faster and move faster.

I found myself not understanding the hit boxes of some of the powerups and the timings being different for each one, the bosses seem a little simple and that once you do the first 5 levels its simple to defeat the boss but then you can either die or back out there doesn’t seem to be an end to the waves, next is the coins counter now the achievement for the coins counter seems to be broken and not cumulative at all as i had collected around 3000 coins and still didn’t have the achievement but i checked the stats screen and i only had barely 500 which didn’t seem right so i found myself having to go back over the level again and again for the counter to slightly move along and it must have been around the 10k coin mark i actually unlocked it so it does need fixing in a patch to make it correct.

Jet Set Knights’ heavy reliance on inspiration makes it feel altogether too familiar, with some aspects being replicated like-for-like. It’s not quite as entertaining as those games that inspired it, however if you’re not too hung up on originality you’ll find that Jet Set Knights on Xbox One is plenty of fun to play.

With a great combination of retro graphics and sound Jet Set Knights makes for a fantastic reminder of the good old days. The gameplay is solid and very fun to play either solo or co-op. There are elements that could do with a little polish but that’s more of a nit pick than anything. I had tonnes of fun with Jet Set Knights and look forward to the developers next title!
