I’m happy that Naps Team is still around. I played their first game, a beat ‘em up Shadow Fighter on Commodore Amiga 23 years ago. It was a bit homespun but really thrilling and competent fighter. There’s some similar likable roughness to Iron Wings. The game needs some more ironing to its wings to get rid of the bugs and seriously tone down the ridiculous time limits to really take off. Then again, there is no air combat game quite like it around at the moment. For all its bents and bullet holes in the game design, there’s an indelible picturesqueness in the game's visceral action. Iron Wings is like a pulp novel. You know it’s a bit silly but it will entertain you nonetheless.

NAPS Team's WWII arcade flight sim sports some interesting mechanics and a good story, but ends up being hindered by some bad design choices and a lackluster technical production.

Credit is due for the unique and daring storyline, however the way in which it, and the gameplay, come across gives nothing to allow Iron Wings to be remembered in a positive way.

Unfortunately though the game fails to deliver in some important areas and this frustrated me because there is some good here but it’s ultimately outweighed by the bad. The missions in the game however are actually pretty good, and the best thing is that they have a decent variety to them. Unfortunately though the controls and shooting mechanics accompanying the missions are frustrating to say the least. The controls in the game feel awkward and they never seem to get better throughout which definitely impacts on the enjoyment you have with the game. The shooting mechanics also feel awkward throughout and no matter what you do you never feel you fully connect with them, which is definitely frustrating. I did however enjoy the slow-mo mechanic, and when using this mechanic this is without a doubt the most exciting parts of the game. The game also boasts a decent story and I thought the story did a great job of stirring up some emotions, and it would have been even better if some of the voice over work was better. The presentation side of the game is lacklustre and definitely ruins the games immersion. The game can look alright at times but sadly them times are few and far between, and ultimately all you remember are the poor animations which stay with you throughout. At the end of the day Iron Wings had the potential to be a good and interesting game, but unfortunately it fails too many times on the basics and this means it never reaches anywhere near its full potential. The price tag on the game also makes this title suffer because there isn’t enough content in the game to justify such a hefty price tag. There is some good things here every now and then and I think some will enjoy this game, but I think a lot more won’t enjoy the game so unfortunately I can’t fully recommend Iron Wings. Full Review »

This is Microsoft's Life of Black Tiger or Gachduine, basically. Full Review »

The planes themselves look great and can be aesthetically and customized to better suit the player's needs. Visually, not too many options are available just camouflages, but they are enough entertainment and according to developers the right camouflage reduces plane damage. It's fun and hard enough, you always have to figure it out how to approach an objective. A must play for all arcade action flight games Full Review »
