This could have been a great name. It has beautiful visuals, a great score, excellent puzzles and a great way to increase one's abilities and powers. The game hooks you for hours at end thanks to the engagement gameplay. However, the following shortcomings make the game utter crap and not even close to Limbo, Inside, Unravel, Braid (the best) and similar puzzle/platformers.

The game hooks you for hours at end thanks to the engagement gameplay. However, the following shortcomings make the game utter crap and not even close to Limbo, Inside, Unravel, Braid (the best) and similar puzzle/platformers.

    Here's the ****

    1. Maps are ridiculous. It is somewhat tolerable that you have to venture into a territory, arbitrarily roam around until you hear a tuneless, ridiculous humming of a character named Conifer. Then you need to buy the map from him. It is intolerable that even after you buy a map to an area, the entire area is not visible and that you have to go through multiple hoops and buy a bunch of stuff to do simple things like point out your location (where you are on the map) and other points of interest (you have to go to the main town, find a vendor, and buy some tokens which start showing points of interest). Unnecessary and poorly conceived.

    2. The score is great, the voice acting (and the made up language/script) is ridiculous and laughable. Whoever thought of this obviously must be a manager or a boss or something because this was eminently laughable (and not in a good way)

    3. Combat (bosses) is insanely difficult. And not in a good way. There is no progress indicator to show how much damage has been inflicted and even when you slog through the battle, the bosses will respawn into another avatar and inflict a different type of damage. Don't get me wrong - I love tough fights (Sekiro, Curse of the Dead Gods, Dark Souls etc - but those battles are interesting and gripping). The boss fights in Hollow Knight are boring and extremely difficult.

    4. Haphazard location of shops. Another ridiculousness. A particular vendor who sells more token slots is not available at the main town/location. Every time you want to purchase a new slot (each increasingly priced), you have to slog through the same old, same old enemies to get to that person. Idiotic.

    5. Same for another vendor who sells a nail (main weapon) upgrade. This chap (with his idiotic language) is not available in the main town. You have to slog through the same set of enemies just to get to him. Navigating the entire world is going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth - multiply this by 100. This is messed up. You go to place A, earn money, go to place B, upgrade your weapon, then C, earn money, then B again to upgrade your weapon, then place A to go to an area that you could not access because you lacked those abilities - get it? It's a cheap trick to make the game appear bigger and longer than it is. Combined with the fact that the game is completely quest-less, arbitrary, purpose-less and aimless, this back and forth journey gets to you.

In conclusion - one of the most beautiful looking **** game I have played. Never have i see such wasted potential.

I played it on Xbox Series X and encountered no technical issues.
But I don't think it deserves such a high score.
The art direction has absolutely no effect on me, the difficulty is poorly managed compared to a game like Dead Cells, nothing kept me engaged and I couldn't finish it. Overall, an impressive work for such a small team, but in the end a boring game which adds nothing new to

A beautiful and charming game, a perfect mix between hardcore difficulty and a fair challenge. I'm in love with this game, the sound design and the 2D artwork it's just perfect.

I didnt think I was going to like this game, I was SO WRONG. This game is a masterpiece, the best Metroidvania Ive ever played, even better than Super Metroid and Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
Hollow Knight is big, es deep (pun intended), is beautiful, is touching. The music is soooo good that I listen to it in my car. This is a game that is worth the whole generation.

Extremely challenging. This is an incredibly deep, beautiful game. I have some advice. Keep detailed notes as you play on the areas you explore and the obstacles you encounter. WriteExtremely challenging. This is an incredibly deep, beautiful game. The game doesn’t hold your hand or tell you what to do but if you keep your own journal like this you will eventually be able to finish the game without using a walkthrough or guide. Definitely not for everyone but it feels really good to have finally finished this one. Expand

Grind, grind, grind. The game has a really beautiful design, and decent gameplay with a good levelling-up system - but that's as far as it goes. The story is almost non-existent, there aren't really any puzzles and there's no interesting characters, dialogue etc. That could be forgiven, but the grinding aspect of the game can't be. You've got to constantly travel all around the world of the game, with extremely limited ways of shortcutting journeys, except for very few locations.

Some of the bosses are extremely challenging, which I could live if it wasn't for the fact that you've got to grind your way back to them when defeated (the game doesn't start you at the boss again when you die, or anywhere near). I could understand the developers doing this if there was a challenge in reaching the boss, because that could be thought of as part of the boss stage, if you will. But it's never challenging, in most cases I can get back to the bosses fine 100% of the time, so what's the point? I can't get my head around the developers' reasoning. And the best part is when you get back to the boss you've got to retrieve your "soul", and when you do that you're inherently not at 100% health. So, you've got the choice: face the boss with reduced health, or go back and grind your health up.

Grind, grind, grind. It's a cheap way of artificially making the game "bigger", and a cynical move by the developers. Fine for teenagers who have adults paying their bills and have mountains of time and patience to do this, but for working adults this game takes liberties. I've had to abandon playing it, which is a shame, because if it wasn't for the grind I'd have loved to have completed it.

It gives you a sense of empowerment, like you earned something. Many other games have done their own version of this subgenre to great success. So what do I think about Hollow Knight? Well... it's good, I guess? Hollow Knight does allow you to explore and there's lots of backtracking, but rather than solely earning a new ability that allows you to access new areas or discovering hidden items that open previously locked doors, it also asks you to buy items from the store to help progression. This can be especially frustrating as you battle overpowered enemies, trying to collect enough money for a specific item, only to die and lose everything you worked so hard for. In other words, the opposite of empowering. Dying it's normal in games but not this much. Do I recommend this game? Sure, but only if you like a challenge and repeating mundane tasks to make financial progress... Expand

Hollow Knight is an immediate classic. You’ll be rewarded with every second that you spend playing this game, nothing feels wasted or left as an afterthought save for some minor pacing issues. Team Cherry has crafted a tight, responsive 2D side-scroller that deserves your attention & support as it’s truly a modern masterpiece.
