Running, jumping and shooting is the perfect combination for me and when a game does these aspects correctly you end up having a huge amountRunning, jumping and shooting is the perfect combination for me and when a game does these aspects correctly you end up having a huge amount of fun with that said game. Hill Quest may be a platformer at heart but it doesn’t just focus all its efforts on the platforming elements. Instead it puts effort into a number of different areas and this meant that I had a very enjoyable experience with this game even if it does suffer with a few shortcomings. I won’t mind admitting that I didn’t expect much of a story in this game and if it did have some sort of a story I didn’t expect it to be anything special. Thankfully I was proven wrong because what you get is a story that is not only interesting but it also succeeds in making you become quite attached to the game to see what happens next. The gameplay that accompanies the story is also better than I expected and once I started playing it was hard to put down. In fact I was that addicted to the gameplay that I was easily able to look past the few technichal issues the game has. Thankfully though these technichal issues weren’t much of a problem anyway and they only provided me with a slight annoyance instead of being a major problem. The biggest problem I had though was the game’s difficulty curve. At the start I thought it was a little too difficult and the difficulty curve can spike out of nowhere at times, but as I progressed and became used to the game the difficulty curve didn’t pose much of a problem, which is great. Even though the game could be quite difficult at times I still didn’t find myself getting frustrated much and I think that was mainly down to how the mechanics held up throughout my time with the game. Obviously the most important mechanic in this game is its platforming elements, and I’m pleased to say that this aspect of the game has been done extremely well. Everything about the platforming feels tight and responsive throughout and I didn’t suffer with any problems when it came to the controls as well, which obviously is a very good thing. On the presentation front the game has quite a bit of charm dotted throughout. The visuals might not look amazing but I thought they implemented themselves in with the gameplay extremely well. The sound design was my favourite thing about the presentation side of the game though and in a way it made the gameplay even more fun, which is awesome. At the end of the day as far as platformers go Hill Quest is a decent addition to the genre. It does however suffer with a few shortcomings that stop it from being included in the very good platformers list but despite this it gets more things right than it gets wrong and that’s enough to get a recommendation from me.
