    The hack and slash genre has seen a decline in recent year’s so when a new game comes to the genre I’m always eager to get to grips with it. Thankfully Hammerwatch is a very enjoyable addition to the genre and it does a great job of capturing an old-school feel whilst also maintaining a modern edge to it as well. Obviously the most important thing about a game like this is the hack and slash gameplay and thankfully it delivers in pretty much all areas here. A thing that surprised me a great deal about the game is the amount of content it has and the best thing is that each mode brings something to the table. Without a doubt the best way to enjoy this game is when you play with friends and they’ve also promised to deliver online multiplayer in the near future, which is something I’m really looking forward to. They do have a single player addition as well for you to play with, but when you play on your own things can become repetetive quickly and it’s definitely a lot more difficult when playing on your own. My biggest gripe with the game is that it lacks variety in certain areas and I especially found this to be the case when it came to the level design and enemy design. It does however kinda make up for this by offering a decent amount of variety in the character classes you can choose from, and I must admit that it was a pleasure to try out each different class. The presentation side of the game is something that I really enjoyed. Visually the game has a retro feel with modern touches included and the same can be said about the sound design, which is awesome. At the end of the day if you’re a fan of the traditional hack and slash style then you will absolutely adore Hammerwatch. It does have a few shortcomings but you will easily forget about these especially when playing with friends. It manages to nail all the important aspects which makes the game very enjoyable and this puts the game in the very good category when it comes to the hack and slash genre, and for that reason it gets a recommendation from me.… Expand

    If you’re playing singleplayer - which, until the update, you most often will be - then that’s how to best enjoy Hammerwatch; short bursts. It’s nice to sit down every now and then and just relax with something charming and humble. Yes, it will take weeks to complete its two six-hour campaigns this way, but every time you come back, you’re a little stronger, maybe a little faster, and definitely richer. In singleplayer, it’s a good game. In multiplayer, it’s something more. Keeping in mind that the PC version already has online multiplayer, I am confident that Crackshell are being honest about the forthcoming update. So if you're on the fence, at least keep an eye on this one.

    If you’re looking for a cheap new adventure to get your teeth into, or are just after a loot collector that will invoke memories of the classic hack ‘n’ slash era, then Hammerwatch will happily ply you with the content required.

    Lengthy loading times to the side, Hammerwatch is the pinnacle of couch co-op fun. The addition of timed exclusive console content, along with the promise of online play and new mods, makes Hammerwatch an absolute steal when you take the generous price tag into account. The game looks great and plays great, which is further bolstered when you bring your friends into the fold.
