Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger IX is a 16bit Retro Sidescrolling Bullet-Hell Action Shooter. Coming in as the Fifth Entry in the Gunvolt series, Luminous Avenger features Copen, a side character in the previous installations, as the Main Character. A knowledge of the story from the prior games is a great help here, as I was mostly lost in the story. A knowledge of the story from the prior games is a great help here, as I was mostly lost in the story. The action and intensity of the game kept me pushing forward despite the confusion with the happenings. Copen doesn't feel like a relatable character to me, making following the story even harder for me. It was like starting an anime in the middle. Combat and platforming are fast-paced, and dashing around like crazy blasting enemies away is absolutely addictive. Copen gathers an impressive array of abilities, and each use of any of them takes away from your bullet gauge adding a bit of strategy to your gameplay. There were a few things that would happen or activate that I didn't understand why. For example, sometimes, randomly, Copen's companion Lola would resurrect Copen upon death, giving you a boost in power for a few seconds. Luminous Avenger has insanely fun gameplay, and if you know the story from this series, you should feel more at home playing as I did. Expand

The story isn’t anything too great, with underwhelming character development and a boring plot. Not being able to control up and down for dashing feels like it’s an attempt to make the game more difficult. Overall, I enjoyed what I played but there were a few letdowns.
