For being a remastered game, I was a bit disappointed they didn't address issues from the original game, such as center screen aiming and the weapon slide glitch. I understand The Coalition wanted to keep Gears of War as pure and close to the original as possible, but getting rid of some glitches wouldn't have ruined the game.

The dedicated servers are lackluster compared to other Xbox One exclusives. Halo 5 plays perfectly fine for me, while Gears of War Ultimate Edition has frequent player skipping.

Overall, a good remaster. I wish they would've fixed some issues with the original game instead of trying to keep it exactly the same, but I guess they were scared of some people raging over the removal of glitches and outdated aiming. Nonetheless Gears of War retains its original fun with stunning visuals to go with it.

A great remaster of a fantastic game, the game has stunning visuals and excellent gunplay with a very interesting world. The story is a little weak and the AI can be very dumb at times but overall it's a great game that still holds up well.

The multiplayer is fun, though it is disappointing that they didn't add any cool gamemodes and just left it as it is, which I guess is what some people were looking for.

The graphics look great, and aside from very minor glitches that I found the game was well polished, and the audio was great as always. They made some minor gameplay changes that appeared in later games, but just enough so it didn't feel like a completely different game.

My only disappointment is a lack of game modes and extras. I think if they added score attack from Gears 3, some of the cool multiplayer game modes from later games then I would probably raise it to a 9. Otherwise, it is still great, especially since it was only $40. It is cheaper now, so even with Gears 4 coming out I would recommend it for any fans or people just wanting a fun third person shooter.

A nice remaster with some additional content for long time Gears fans. It's not hard to see why those levels were cut from the original game in the first place, but they still add some extra depth to the campaign that anyone into the series will appreciate.

Excellent third-person shooter. A game that was very influential in its day, especially for the cover system from which other games such as the 'Uncharted' saga later borrowed ideas. The exploration of the scenarios is reinforced with the usual mechanics of searching for collectibles to unlock, in this case, comic pages. In short, if you're in the mood for a third-person shooter, pure, unabashed action, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition delivers it without a hitch, for 8 to 10 hours of straightforward, adrenaline-fuelled fun. The newly remade cutscenes look great and improve upon what was shown in the original release. In-game graphics have also been upscaled to 1080p and the campaign now features scattered collectibles that unlock panels from the GOW comic book. Additionally, drop in/drop out cooperative play is now an option.

The Ultimate Edition includes every multiplayer map ever made for the original game and the framerate for competitive play has been increased to 60 frames per second. Furthermore, "Team Deathmatch" and "King of the Hill" are newly added modes. So if you've never played "Gears" before, then this remaster is the best way to experience it. But even if you have, you'll probably still enjoy this upgrade. There's nothing quite like this series. It's fast and brutal and can be a lot of fun with friends. While the franchise has evolved and improved considerably, this first installment is still worth revisiting in upgraded form. I'd rate it with an 8 out of 10.

The characters have little personality, and the story is shallow. It could have added a bit of depth to the plot in this remastering. Furthermore, there are some bugs (Not many).

With that said, the shotgun is all over the place with consistency. Some games, I'm popping heads off with a shotgun from far, almost like a sniper. This is both good and bad. Good for me obviously but bad for the balance of the game. I should not be able to do that. Now here's the flip side. Sometimes I'm on top of a guy, as he's picking up his teammate and nothing. No hit marks, no nothing and I get instant killed. Microsoft is probably releasing this game so they can get more people excited about Gears 4 because there's no reason to re-release a classic game besides money and momentum. Sadly this is slowly becoming a shell of Halo: The Masterchief Collection - full of problems. Microsoft needs to address this ASAP cause I'm slowly getting fed up with HMCC, this, the Xbox One party issues, etc. The Xbox 360 is more stable online than this. Expand

Gears Ultimate looks absolutely stunning, but there are still issues that weren't fixed. Some things were changed from the original, too, and that's equally as annoying.

The graphics, though, are insane. Absolutely beautiful in 60FPS (online; 30FPS campaign) and the movements are smooth enough to make you completely forget about roadie run glitching and weapon sliding from back in the day. Graphics get a 10, bar none.

My issues are mostly online but also somewhat with regards to the campaign.

The campaign, to start, doesn't have 60FPS and that's odd to me. Online, you would think, would need so much more physical memory and processing power that you'd expect this to be flipped. The campaign still looks cool, but gets somewhat choppy during hordes and rushes. They had a chance to completely blow things out of the water and missed it with the 30FPS, in my most humble opinion.

Additionally, I don't remember the AI being as useless as they are in this game. I'm sticking to co-op so that Dom has a pulse, but Baird and Cole frequently let enemies walk directly past them without even standing up, let alone shooting at them. They are somewhat cognizant of picking up DBNO players, but their lack of wherewithal throughout the majority of the story is troubling.

As a side note, I'd gotten stuck at two different junctures because AI enemies didn't spawn properly and wouldn't move from cover. They both happened in Act II, where you must stay in light or be eaten by Kryll, and they prevented me from moving forward with the mission. It's easy enough to just die and reload, but it's still annoying to have the issue.

Multiplayer is a majority of my gripe with this game.

I played Gears 1 religiously. To this day, almost a decade later, my gamerpic is still Seriously, so I know full well what this game used to be. Much like Halo, it was a power weapon hogging, NAT closing, host-shotgunning clusterluck of a morose mix of aggravation & passion.

This online experience is nothing like the old game.

I think they did something to make it feel more like Gears 2/3, both of which I hated, and I think it really takes away from the original feel. You used to be able to melee directly out of a run, shoot immediately after tumbling and pick weapons up while in cover. None of these things are possible anymore. Shotguns are curbed, melee stuns are instant death sentences and lancers to the legs somehow do more damage than to the head. It's not impossible to get over these issues and still have fun, but, considering the game is branded as a remake of a classic, it needs to be said that it's totally different than what old gamers are used to.

More problematic, though, is the matchmaking process. There's apparently some sort of difficulty algorithm built into matchmaking to make the game as fair as possible, but I haven't seen it work properly once. After the first 10 or so games (which are apparently enough to establish this figure and thus ought to be enough for it to kick in), I was still being placed against full teams/clans who were 70+ levels higher than me. I have enough muscle memory from Gears 1 to not play pitifully, but it's a total wash when you're alone and you're put against a stacked team. The conventional answer is to just run with my own team, but it's still the point that this would immediately throw a new player off Gears for life. Too many games are gimmes for established teams.

Sticky bouncers are as out of control in this game as bumper jumpers in Halo, and that's a huge detractor as well. It's a strategy that's open to anyone so I don't factor this into just this game, but the series as a whole needs work with this.

Game looks absolutely amazing, but the gameplay doesn't add up to much more than a 7. Luckily, this was free with my Xbox One.

This is not to say it has problems, as much of the original problems with the first Gears stays in this remaster. The first is the story is the same with better graphics, which I think is too short and not really coherent even as a fan of the series that acknowledges plot issues.

The multiplayer is a half measure forward overall, the 60 fps and dedicated servers is really nice, but the inclusion of skin camos and microtransactions made the Ultimate Edition start to become Not Ultimate for my time and money invested in it. Locking on targets was a trend started in Gears 3 and it is in the remaster mp, but yet not the more smoother and more gratifying mechanics that 3 did so well at. It felt as stiff as the original, which vet Gear fans will like but for newcomers that want to experience the game this can be seen as a hassle and couple this with the lingering toxic competitive community and you can expect the game to fall apart (as it did) within the first couple months.

While I appreciate the try, Gears of War Ultimate Edition doesn't really make a splash that will entice newcomers. It struggles with the modern times of how smooth and great shooters can be and Ultimately feels a retread of its roots rather than a true remaster. If this was a remaster of Gears 1, 2 and 3, then this would have been far more worth the price. Still a good game, but many of the old headaches return.

This ruins the gameplay experience many times (especially if we play in a high difficulty)
However, despite this issue, it's a pretty enjoyable game that i'd widely recommend to anyone who is searching for an action game.

Expand

So.. how do improve it in the "ULTiMaTe eDiTioN" ?! , simple make everything the same but change only the good things the game had -_-
Sadly, I was late for this party as well, as I started playing the game on PC in 2018.
Luckily I still remember well my childhood with this game (this was one of my favorite series after all).
So I can still give my critic on things that were NOT fixed.

    Lets begin, shall we ?
    - Movement is the same as it was in GoW1. If you played the other titles chances are you know that they improved VASTLY from GoW1 to GoW2 in movement. This game , as a "remaster", decided to of course leave the clunky movement.
    * You ofter get stuck in wall trying to roll out of it.
    * Delayed input due to 3 actions can be performed (which was improved in 2-4)
    * AI friends is dump and the "command" system pretty much is useless
    * The enemy AI is annoying as I remember them. Often times the pop out of cover when your obviously not aiming at them.
    * And the stupid tilted aiming is brought to GoW1 even thou it wasn't (try aiming your sniper at an enemy's head, and when he shoots first, your aim is "tilted". This was not in GoW1 but why not put it anyway. But implement the movement from GoW2 ? NAH who needs it , RIGHT ? FU)
    * Also, how come they couldn't implement a split screen in 2016 ? Like back in 2006 and it was released for PC I could forgive, but for the "Ultimate Edition" to NOT feature in again in the same god damn platform ? FU guys (lets not forget GoW4 has split screen... but for campaign only -_- )

I finished the game on hardcore and never touched it again because the online in PC is dead and no cross platform, so **** me, right ?
It was nice play the game after so many years that I switched my XB360 to PS3 (Killzone 2 was the **** what can I say)

    Cons:
-Story was fairly simple & boring
-Characters were all pretty one dimensional
-Friendly A.I. is atrocious, which makes it extremely hard to play solo
-Enemies are bullet sponges and they all focus on the player and not the A.I.
-Enemies often have one to two shot weapons which create frustrating encounters where it's not about skill as much as it is about luck, since the friendly A.I. won't help
-Boss fights are a joke & rage inducing because of the problems listed above
-Art style is pretty bland (black/grey trend of early 2000's games)
-Soundtrack is pretty forgettable for the most part

Overall, I would not recommend it if you're planning on playing it by yourself, unless you stick with the lower difficulties (which I did not unfortunately) or if you like to play games that make you feel bad about yourself.
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition feels tedious, frustrating and a new form of torture, carried only by its solid gameplay.

    Cons:
    - Horrendous optimization. This game has not aged well graphically, and the remaster adds very little to get excited about.
    - Broken matchmaking. It's understandable that Australian servers are limited, but changing the region to Europe and United States yields no results. Sometimes, a game can be found within seconds. 90% of the time, 15 minutes of lobby waiting results in nothing.
    - Lobby waiting system is also broken once a game has been found - maps are on random cycles and tend to repeat themselves all too often.
    - Terrible menu system, with a lack of options such as number of players active.
    - Kicks everyone to the lobby after every match instead of continuing onto the next map.

A poor attempt to emulate a classic, mostly down fell but its broken MP component.

Never had XBox360, so this is first time I play this game. Really don't know why some people like those games, but GOW is really mediocre third person shooter with really bad story and boring gameplay. Could be fun if you have low expectations. Seems they didn't take advantage of new hardware in any way except better GFX. Loading time after you die is ridiculous today and controls are terrible.

Shame that part and so many more were never fixed. Just about every frustrating mistake you remember from the first game is shamelessly repeated here. A couple of the more noteable check points have been moved, but the majority that began before an unskippable cutscene, still do. The movement is improved and The aim assist is supposed to be better, but I played it on insane, and I didn't notice an aim assist.

ALL the mistakes from before are repeated and there's more. I remember a particular wretch that, in my 360 version would just jump from the roof to the floor over and over again in the mines, he still does that. Broken AI. A lot more mobs, even on Insane, will do things like that, too and get stuck behind doors. I had to search and search for the last guy in one scene and he was stuck, wedged behind a door that had flung open during the fight.

Dom's Ai is worse than before. Dom will get himself killed and he will get you killed and he won't lift a finger to help you at least 60% of the time. There will be entire scenes where you get kamikazi charged by three locusts with shotguns and dom just watches as they run right by him, straight at you. The AI will notice when Dom is dead and they will tend to become very aggressive in this event, usually charging, which wouldn't be a problem, except on insane, they take an entire clip to kill and shooting them in the face or knees will rarely stun them in this version.

There are several levels added to the game, that apparently were available on the PC version. They're awful, they seem like something a fan created. the last scene contains a fight that rivals the difficulty of RAAM himself. You have to fight a brumak with nothing but standard weaponry and if Dom dies, you might as well start over. With only one target, the Brumak is nearly impossible to kill. I'm all for hard games, but they shouldn't be hard because the AI is so bad. I shouldn't have to wait for that lucky run were dom manages not to run directly underneath the brumak's feet.

The Musical score leaves something to be desired, and it's questionable why they didn't fix any of the voice acting flubs. They're not endearing. Marcus already sounds like Eeyore. There's a lot in this game that will leave you scratching your head or simply furious because these problems shouldn't exist in modern games. Dom and co will consistently stand right in front of you, take the only available cover, block doorways, your path and your shots. There's no reason for it. There's no reason that the NPC dom has to die at all. He doesn't need to be Rambo, but he could at least stay alive.

I am happy to have beaten this game again and now that I have, I don't want to ever see it again. A twisted reminder of how far our games have come, how vapid the industry is and how a lot of developers, apparently, don't play their own games on the hardest setting to completion. If they did, I imagine, they would *AT LEAST* make dom avoid the path of my bullet or change the location of most of the checkpoints. A lot of them are in the absolute dumbest places they could possibly be.

They'll say "I'll cover you" and then they'll run into a horde of enemies to their death, thus restarting a checkpoint. A few times, Dom could have actually fired his weapon and maybe I would have lived. He also likes to run directly towards turrets resulting in instant death. Your allies will constantly stand in a group outside of cover and die. Playing on a harder difficulty will just result in deaths unrelated to skill, just the gameplay itself. If you try to fall back, one of your stupid friends will be idly standing behind you, preventing you from retreating. These developers shamelessly gave us a game that involves seriously untweaked AI. The locusts have no fear, so it's understandable that they'll come at you with their balls out. The characteristics of the hive played well with the limitations of 2006. Visuals don't look any better than what PC games did three or four years ago. 60fps multiplayer is nice but that's an easy thing to introduce, and going from 60fps multi to 30fps campaign is quite jarring, it should be painfully obvious to even the most casual gamer why 60fps should be prevalent.

Gameplay wise this is as bad as it's ever been. It's designed for coop because it's basically a zergfest, no matter how good you are you are going to die again and again in singleplayer. It needed coop as a crutch so they didn't have to go back and balance the game to ensure it rewarded skillful, intelligent play. Just grind your way through it with a buddy.

Squad AI is still crap and so is enemy AI. Sometimes they'll come out of emergence holes and then just stand there completely brain dead. As far as single-player goes this is just an HD texture pack (something PC users have been getting for free for over a decade now), and when you get close to the textures you see that they aren't even on par with current community-made HD texture packs for other PC games. They're higher-res than original Gears, but by today's standards, they are actually low-res.

Multiplayer is a broken mess and I have no idea how this slipped under the radar. They say the multiplayer is on dedicated servers but it plays like it's still on peer-to-peer. I still see players skipping around the map on occasion. My NAT is Open and I have a 60Mbps internet connection, so I know the error is entirely on Microsoft's/Coalition's end. I don't feel like I ever get better or worse, when I'm good I feel like it's because all my hits are actually connecting and when I'm bad it's because hits aren't registering properly. I've shot AFK players point-blank in the face and had no response. You don't get these issues in offline 1v1, and it's purely because there is zero lag and 100% weapon damage registration, so there is a problem going on here and I don't expect them to fix it. There's a post on the main page about them being aware of certain game issues but unless they actually provide high-quality dedicated servers - because this may actually be on dedicated servers, just very, very poor ones - this game isn't worth playing online. It requires far too much skill for how much error there can be due to technical issues.

Once again the same generic 3rd person shooter game. The graphics almost look the same as the previous instalments, no innovation, nothing at all. A total waste of money.

I've been a fan of the Gears of War series since launch, however as it is now after December 31st 2015 the game no longer gives Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War Judgement for free by logging into Xbox live. As such I now view this game as little more than a glorified coaster.

There are loads of features of this game like for example the campaign, multiplayer and many more other features on the game. In the game you get tom play different characters. Like sometimes you be a girl character or a boy character. If you shoot the bad characters, then there will be blood all over the floor. Expand

The Coalition has done a superb job of reminding us why we fell in love with Gears back in 2006.

It's an HD edition that fully respects the importance of the original game for the tps genre. It's a technically sound restyle that maintains the content of the original without trying to revolutionize it. It's impressive how well the game has aged, really.

Gears Of War: Ultimate Edition definitely belongs in that upper tier; its campaign no longer carries the industry-shaping impact it once had but it remains tremendous fun, while its multiplayer is still dramatic, unique and engaging, perhaps even more so now given the final touches The Coalition has added. As was the case back in 2006, come for the campaign and stay for the multiplayer – you’ll be glad you did.
