    What a waste ... I'm a longtime fan of the series. And the fourth part was good and promising, but this is a turn in the completely wrong direction.
    Yes, graphically it is excellent, but everything else is terrible. Characters do not cause any sympathy. They are not consistent, flat and boring. You cannot create a drama if a player does not give a damn about its participants.

    Fights are hellishly boring.
    Too many one-shots out of nowhere and too little enemy variety. There are a lot of enemies who are almost not dangerous, but require a long and tedious shooting at one point on their ass or somewhere else.
    Constant babysitting with ai companions, plus one-shots, plus checkpoints, plus boring shooting at large enemies at one point and you get at times the most incredibly hellishly boring repetitive gameplay.
    Open arenas are pointless timewasters.
    And oh god, hire good writers please.
     What is this miserable cliched “Luke I'm Your Father” plot? You destroy plot potentials for locusts! They could have had a centuries-old history, and now they have nothing.
    And, I laughed to the pain in my stomach over the choice that you suddenly give me. I see what you did here.     This game is very annoying without reasons, very boring without substance and very uninspired even if it should be. The mechanics feel like pre 2007, it is flawed in every aspect, not a real gears in terms of tone and atmosphere. An edgy gears if you like...I didn't like the new orientation.

    The game looks good, but nothing groundbreaking or up to the standards some have been advertising. Truth be told I find the material authoring and asset definition around the environment quite average, if not below expectation. Gameplay is pretty much the same as it has always been. There is really not much to say here unfortunately. Get it on game pass, play it and move on.

From a ridiculous, unresolved story all the way down to ruinous basic gun play, Gears 5 is a total disaster.     All of the weapons have insane recoil, making gun play a chore of timid burst-fire and readjustment. The new additions and even editions to old classics are for the worse. In nearly every mission involving a major gunfight my partner and I both ran out of ammo, forcing us to take reckless action to melee or otherwise kill enemies just to clear the room. The rambling plot has you criss-cross and backtrack through the same bland, empty open world. There is no leveling up and no incentive to explore and do side activities.

    The most tragic issue, however, is the incompetence of the NPCs that are forced to fight alongside you. The sole moment of excitement came when we finally got to use the beloved Hammer of Dawn; we had to restart that gunfight at least half a dozen times because an NPC would walk through your laser and cause the beam to hit and kill you instantly. On the final boss, we had to retry 5 times when uncontrolled NPC would get themselves killed. In one instance, within 3 seconds of reloading after a death, an NPC got himself killed again. A great number of unwarranted restarts will find you in this game, which erroneously focuses on squad dynamics when you cannot control the squad.

    Another nagging irritation is the lack of navigational assistance leaving you to wonder what the hell you're looking for at several points. "Jack" performs a ridiculous McGuffin where he can fly through vents to activate a terminal to open a door or something; oftentimes you'll see the switch he needs but he'll refuse to fly through any but the designated opening to reach it, regardless of how obviously other paths might work. In some cases this opening is rooms or meters away and punitively nonobvious, forcing you to mash the button giving you an environmental scan until you miraculously see the highlighted vent you need to use.

    This game is a 100% pass. The plot remains unresolved and whimpers to an end with a shameful sequel bait. Fitting that the voice actor for JD is also the worse of the two Spartacus in this pitiable attempt.    … Expand

    This game suck, nothing like the original. Dumbed down, noob-catered camping fest. All these generic 10s are shills. The game needs a lot of of work. TC does not know how to make Gears, bring Epic back.

    Gears Of Woke 5: yet another game with kickass women and manservants. What could possibly go wrong? And so another one of the few remaining non-feminized game series goes down the drain.

    Looks great, plays ok for most of the time has some annoying bugs like getting stuck and teleport and some of the physics make no sense. The "open world" traversal seems pointless and even though it looks great gets boring quickly. Micro transactions and day one dlc is jokes

    Whilst trying to innovate from previous games I personally couldn’t connect or feel any engagement to the campaign or characters, the multiplayer was okay but again couldn’t engage, I’m sure many people love the game it’s just not for me

    Gears 5 is similar gameplay wise to Gears 4 but with boring free roam and back-tracking missions in a desert on a wind sail sand boat and the story a massive SJW politics injection. The original first three Gears of War games were good, not this s***.

    I've reached Act 2 Chapter 3 and I've encounter three bugs so far. Two required a restart to the last checkpoint, one required a restart of an entire chapter as the reloading of a checkpoint (current and previous) resulted in a death loop.     Lo único que vale la pena es la campaña al agregar el cuchillo le quitaron la escencia a la saga y lo hicieron en algunos aspectos como Calle of Duty, el multijugador es una mierda los Wallbounce ya no son efectivos y hay autoapuntado que lo facilita mucho las armas yatienen más alcance lo que lo hace aun mas fácil

What makes a good game good is the story and its feeling in the style it represents, however in this game it is more shown that the game is great for its graphics and people don't seem to see the story doesn't really represent what it was made to be as, to show how the art of war is like (though yes this is typically war in gears 4 and 5 keep reading forward to see what I mean). They made the enemy come back with no explanations of how they came back and simply did what the original games NEVER did, shared secrets and made the story about just 1 person, also what are the odds that the grand daughter of the locust queen is with the son of the person that ended the war. It makes me sad to see the gears franchise to be changed when the ending it originally had was perfect. I've played the gears series ever since I was a child and never had criticized the games, so I'm hoping that this franchise will have a turn around and is ended where it should be ended this time.… Expand

    A decent game with serious networking problems. Co-op is virtually unplayable with no end in sight, devs have been working on it for two days now with no improvement, cannot play as a team for more than 5-10 minutes without someone being disconnected. Unacceptable.

    Pas vraiment un monde ouvert (loin de là même), le Gears 5 sort néanmoins de son couloir habituel pour offrir quelques balades dans    Magnifique le nouveau Gears of War ! éblouissant et proposé d'office à 60 im/s et en 4K sur la X (ou aux trois quarts de la 4K même dans des conditions extrêmes selon Digital Foundry, l'autorité en la matière) autant dire qu'on en prend plein les mirettes !

    Pas vraiment un monde ouvert (loin de là même), le Gears 5 sort néanmoins de son couloir habituel pour offrir quelques balades dans deux grands espaces et par la même occasion des missions secondaires très optionnelles mais assez bienvenues... on fait du ski, on surfe sur le sable, on éradique la vermine... on sauve le monde (encore une fois) : tout ça, ça reste du classique.

    L'histoire (?) tente de raconter quelque chose cette fois-ci mais se prend vite ses grosses bottes dans le tapis... car d'une part, c'est invraisemblable et d'autre part, c'est assez ridicule... Gears 5 tente également de mieux caractériser ses personnages mais le fait si maladroitement qu'on se croirait dans un feuilleton de la télé brésilienne. Quelle idée, franchement... dites-moi juste où passer les grands coups de karcher, où et quand nettoyer et j'y vais ! je m'en fous des états d'âme de l'équipe ou de leur 'parcours'...

    Qu'importe, si la jouabilité reste lourdaude, elle n'en est pas moins toujours très spectaculaire avec -c'est nouveau- les capacités du robot ménager à tout faire, Jack, qu'on peut améliorer au fur et à mesure. Et les nombreux réglages concernant la manette permettent d'ajuster au mieux la maniabilité générale.

    Mais bon, j'en suis aux deux tiers de la campagne et là, je suis bloqué... parce qu'un script ne s'est pas déclenché. J'ai dû "manuellement" si j'ose dire aller au lieu suivant en me fiant au dialogue, car aucun point de repère n'est apparu ; sur place, les choses semblent reprendre leurs cours normal -après avoir réchargé, car le jeu était coincé devant la porte- mais impossible de faire entrer le robot dans le bureau ou de pirater l'interface à pirater : l'action contextuelle n'apparaît pas...

    Donc, quand ça sera débuggué, le Gears nouveau devrait être agréable... mais pour l'instant, il faut attendre les patchs. Heureusement qu'il ne m'a coûté que quelques euros (à peine 3 par mois pendant 3 mois) via une promo du Game Pass parce que sinon, je lui aurais collé 1. Un bug pareil (plus un autre lors d'une mission secondaire) ce n'est pas acceptable.

    Epilogue : là, rebelote, je me retape le chapitre 3 en espérant ne pas rencontrer de nouveau le bug bloquant... j'aimerais quand même si c'était possible finir cette campagne... et paf ! ça re-merde mais à un autre endroit, juste après le retour à l'aéroport : l'avion ne décolle pas, le script est enrayé et me re-voilà sans objectif principal !

    ça commence à me gaver : malgré déjà quelques patchs, ils sont plus occupés à régler les microtransactions qu'à débugguer leur jeu... sorti trop tôt et tout cassé en fait. Je descends donc à 3 et je mets mon mouchoir dessus. Dans un an ou deux, le Gears 5 sera peut-être réparé...    … Expand

    Well, i dont like the open world. Gears of War dont Need that imho... I prefer the old Gear-Games much more. The graphics are nice.. but the atmosphere sometimes a little bit low..

Gears of war 1 excellent , gears 2 amazing , gears 3 geat , gears 4 mediocre, while this game is straight trash right next to tactics .. the main character is not relatable , and the story is just a sad excuse of a game plot

    "Weird" game, being the first game in the Gears franchise, I can say that I hated it, maybe because of personal opinions, I didn't like the gameplay of the game, unfortunately I couldn't finish it, because I found it extremely repetitive and boring, you walk more than you play, Multiplayer today, in 2022, is dead, there are hardly any matches, anyway, it deserves a red note (at least for me).

    The multiplayer is forced crossplay meaning if your on xbox and are vs ppl on PC, you're screwed. Also plagued with people hacking on PC and the game is riddled with broken achievements.

When a progression system pushes you hard to not enjoy the game or not make the best play in a match but instead try to achieve a certain tasks in each multiplayer session you have f*cked the multiplayer. When a progression system constantly demands you play as characters you don't like or want to you have f*cked the multiplayer. Also instead of Gears 4s grindy lootbox microtrasaction system they've replaced it with a convoluted microtransaction mess with nothing of value to unlock and with no reasonable or fun way to progress toward unlocking anything. The only way to unlock anything of value will cost you at least an extremely excessive extra $40, and even that content is time limited... absolutely shameful. They clearly marketed this game and redesigned the microtrasaction system to confuse customers and make it difficult for reviewers to warn players all with the main goal to limit outrage during launch. This is unfriendly and unethical behavior. Like with Gears 4 this games player base will die massively as players are left with again a trash progression system that is not centered around FUN and the multiplayer gameplay itself. Under no circumstance should you trust TC and Rod again and buy Gears 6 in the future. Gears of War is now a dead franchise that lies and manipulates you. Its not surprising at all now that they made Gears 5 crossplatform with PC since they basically killed the franchises playerbase with 4s grindy lootbox microtransactions system. But after this I don't know what TC will do to trick players to buy 6. I believe this game just spent the last bit of trust players had with TC and Rod. For me this game was going to decide if I switched to PlayStation for next gen and this game has decided it for me Microsoft is not serious about creating Fun AAA games. Microsoft Xbox is not PlayStation and they are certainly not a Nintendo. Microsoft and TC have taken yet again another stupid pointless approach to gaming that destroys player trust.     After all this time I was expecting some real improvements but it feels more like a Gears 4.5 than a new game.
    It looks great, the characters have the same great charisma but the whole campaign feels the same year after year.
    I hope to see a real new Gears for the next generation.

But directly after act 1 you get to see the real struggles: Go from Point A to Point B and then go to Point C. Through a more than empty semi open world. it just feels like "push the stick in front and watch on your mobile phone until you are at your goal".     Awful game going away from the tropes that made the game enjoyable. Unimaginative enemies, poor gameplay and trying to be something its not. The success of the original trilogy was based on smooth gameplay and a fantastic story. Why put RPG tropes into a shooter? Identity crisis, and poor story.its saving grace is it's voice acting. Bad mechanics, toxic players, stupid ranking system and playlists, and unfair penalty bans for leaving a game someone else has left already. I really like this game, but I just can't give it a goodIs a really good game, amazing franchise, and pretty good campaign. However, I'm giving this game a low score because the main focus of the game is the multiplayer pvp, and it's just awful.     So I really liked the game for awhile, but once they took away the ability to play with a squad of 5 the game was ruined. I don’t understand why a game would be against friends playing together. This game is the reason I’m getting a PS5 and not a new Xbox.

    Negatives:

    - the "health omen" (omen of health aka indicative of damage) .. how to say, it's ugly
    - the enemies are relatively bullet sponges, you shoot but you don't really know in how many minutes they will die like (possibility to activate the health bars in the options at least), we spend half the game reloading our gun
    - we too are bullet sponges so it leaves the impression that our decisions in combat don't matter because there is no great risk, especially since our comrades can revive us, we don't really know how much health we have anyway (see health omen)
    - no "auto pick up ammo", funny animation, slowed progress for nothing, often lacks ammunition (at least to date)
    - we can reload even if already full .. it makes no sense and it's annoying
    - strange place at the top right for the amount of remaining ammo, finally we get used to it
    - limited interactions with the environment, you can't jump, fall, climb or move objects except via a few specific objects
    - too linear / rigid and I had several bugs despite its simplicity, 3 years after the game was released
    - not a fan of roadie run animation but you get used to it
    - no way to get details about our weapons (such as speed, range, accuracy)
    - cannot save manually
    - revive a friend by grabbing his arm to lift him up .. OK super realistic
    - we wear mega armor but no helmet?! (although the character makes a comment that he doesn't like it for his "field of view"...)
    - collectibles to find .. really offers no interest
    - the "components" found all over the place in places that make no sense, like on the floor in a poison shop like
    - it's as if Uncharted and Doom had a child and took on each gender's flaws

    Same old gears formula with slightly better graphics, there's no innovation in the game and it is being milked to death due to lack of another new ips by microsoft
    The controls are decent,but the online multiplayer is laggy and unreliable, alot of glitches and overall not worth the 60 dollar price tag

    This is disappointing. For all thos loving the open world aspect, well that simply is not Gears of War. Microtransactions, cards? With people of you gave this game anything above a five cancel your Gold account. Add in the sound problems the progression that sucks your life away, you got something, just not a Gears Of War game.

De todas formas este Gears 5 si le quitan el mundo abierto y se centrasen en la acción podría haberse quedado en un juego a la altura de los primeros ya que en esta entrega estan volviendo a tomar el camino de los Locust y prescindir mas de los robots, algo que se agradece. Esperemos que en el 6 vayan directamente al grano y cierren la historia deme sigo quedando con los 3 primeros. Non of the characters are likeable especially Kait who is painfully annoying. She always makes everything about here and her disregard for authority with 0 consequences gets on my nerves. In gears 1 Marcus was sentenced to i think life in prison i cant remember the exact number but it was really long. In gears judgement baird and his squad were nearly sentenced to death. Kait they just yell at her at most and she ignores them and life goes on like nothing happened its so forced and irritating.… Expand

During my play through in act 3 chapter 3 I got the skiff bug (look it up, plenty of videos and comments about this) which completely prevents further progression.     Was playing fine,spent 3-4 hours 3 person coop horde mode all the way to 50 (intermediate) got the achievement but got an error code basically game cheated me out of my match exp , if I could with the bugs that they should have corrected after the beta but instead shadowbanned users on reddit posting credible feedback , this game deserves a negative score as of this moment

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Kait and Del were the weakest part of Gears 4, now they take center stage. It's like following the adventures of two annoying millennials as they run around being "brave" and "stunning". Its all very woke 2019 social justice crap. JD has the misfortune of being male AND white and is thus disgraced by The Coalition so that the perfect, infallible Kait can take over as the generic "strong woman".

    JD just disappears at one point and we are told, not shown, that JD is now an a**hole for no real reason (completely disregarding the bond they formed in 4, but I digress...) and Kait and Del set out alone (no white males like Marcus allowed, apparently) and everyone stands around saying"good luck!" ... even though in the last game they literally dropped everything to help Kait find her mother.

    Kait and Del (sounds like a bad sitcom) venture into semi-open, very empty worlds/biomes and complete some fetch quests. There's a great callback to New Hope from Gears 2 with some truly top tier art direction. Marcus isn't there of course but he's nice enough to be on a radio at their beck and call. There's some great lore/story beats and action segments, boss fights, etc.

    They eventualy accomplish the mission and go to the next large, empty biome where Paduk, who doesn't like anyone, instantly trusts and respects Kait because 2019 wahman. He also makes a point to treat James Fenix (the son of the man he actually knows) like crap. Again, 2019 wahman. That's right, JD just shows up, is super nice, submissive and helpful as Kait and Del treat him like dog sh*t. Completely disregarding the events of 4. Again.

    They do some stuff and JD tells Kait that she's really good at everything (no joke, he really does this). Then it finally goes back to being a Gears game with tight, combat focused gameplay and great set pieces. Then Gears asks you if you want to save JD or Del. My personal opinion on this is that this was done so that Rod Fergusson could p*** in the faces of those who chose to save JD when he forces the cannon choice in Gears 6. Getting some woke points on twitter and angering fans.

    Pros:
    + Outstanding graphical fidelity, 4k/60fps on XIX with beautiful HDR
    + Lighting, textures and art direction is superb
    + Combat and weapons are fantastic, small additions/changes are well done
    + Environmental destruction/usability during combat.
    + Sound design is very good
    + Sand and snow deformation technology adds to immersion
    + Some great bosses and mini bosses
    + Sense of scale is impressive
    + Expands/explains story and lore

    CONS:
    - Weakest leads in Gears history. Del is a plank of wood and Kait is just a stand in for "strong female protaganist in 2019". Both characters are given a sense of importance to the Gears verse that is unearned.
    - 2019 progressive propaganda at its most obvious (and shameless)
    - Friendly AI is the worst in the series. Epic levels of dumb from these bots.
    - Empty open worlds/biomes
    - Elevates Kait and Del by disgracing JD
    - Disgusting storefront loaded with high priced MTX's
    - Very grindy pvp/horde/escape modes
    - Large amounts of pandering to Mexico and alphabet people for some reason. Half of the banners are "pride" banners. ????
    - Lots (and lots) of walking segments
    - Buggy at launch
    - Game is almost unplayable at higher difficulties to to incompetent AI, wildly difficult enemies, bugs etc.
    - Not a typical Gears game. Aimed for God of War, wound up with Gears of Woke
    - Gears used to be a system seller. Not anymore
    - Worst story and campaign in the series, by far

    Get on GamePass or on sale. This feels like a spinoff title or DLC. This is not proper Gears of War.

    Okay Microsoft, you win. I'll buy the PS5 next gen over the Scarlett. No reason to destroy Gears like this.    … Expand

    Kait ruins the entire game. She's a selfish POS who abandons everyone to go on a journey to find herself. She's literally just fighting for herself. Nothing is gained on this journey either, only lost. You lose one of 2 main characters at the end, and it feels really like it's just being set up. If you've never played the old gears games you'll probably choose to kill one character, if you've literally only played Gears 5 you're probably gonna choose to kill the other character since you rarely see him & built zero attachment to him the entire game.

    The open world is also bland & empty. Imagine playing in an open world in some weird vehicle that makes zero sense driving & stopping at an area that looks cool only to find one gun & a component piece for your robot. Now multiply this by 100. There is literally no reason to explore in this game. Nothing is gained, much like Kaits journey. It's all filler content meant to pad game time.

    The game shines when you are actually in a fight, shooting, dashing, chainsawing enemies but these moments are so spread out the game feels like half a game. It doesn't help much that you're forced to play as kait for nearly the entire campaign. She's a horrible character now, so focused on herself that she forgets about pretty much everyone around her & what they've done to help her. In gears 4, she had more personality, pazazz & was actually fairly likeable. Now she's just broody, emo, angry, hating the world & everything in it. She's just an SJW now, fighting for nothing & representing nothing but her own self interests.

    Gears of Wahmen, Gears of Woke, Gears of WTF ever you call it, it's a crappy campaign that makes you not want to play the game anymore.

    Bring back Marcus or his son JD as the main protagonist. Gears is supposed to be about Marcus & Gears 4 was supposedly passing on Marcus' legacy to his son, but whoever was put in charge of Gears 5 threw that out the window because they wanted diversity or whatever in their campaign. Diversity doesn't make the game's story better, good writing does. Whoever wrote this game's campaign obviously has something against Marcus & JD because this game changes their characters personality traits & the ending can basically ruin them both entirely depending on your choices.    … Expand

God wrong it was **** there was no climax there was only one awful final boss battle against some gian generic worm nobody cares about. All other things are just copy/past from other gears oh look her mother is alive and is the new queen wow great storytelling... overall one of the worse games i played this year. the gaming press must be on drugs giving this ****show over 4/10.

    Dont even care about gears 6 now. this as a long time gears fan that still liked gears 4.

I know lots of people through GOW4 and we were all generally excited about GOW5, playing it as soon as it was released. We are mostly Horde players so were interested in that but that's completely ruined. I don't even know what this extra nonsense they added is for and why it's only one character per skill set. Have they never heard of personalization or customization? What if a lady player wants that skill set with a female character or vice-versa?

    I don't like the Horde mode, which is what I was looking forward to most. Fine, so Horde is bad, how about the campaign? Reading the reviews from "professional critics" you would think this was some sort of novel experience or polished within an inch of its life. NOT EVEN CLOSE. This game sucks. I described it to my GOW4 mate as, "borderline homosexual". The dialogue is so tedious and childish. How any developer is allowed to make an 18 + game and write it for 12 year olds is beyond me. This title is aimed squarely at SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN and holds no interest for me as an adult

    I've never written a review for a video game before but I was so disappointed by GOW5 and indeed by the blatant shilling going on here, there and everywhere, that I felt the need to express myself

    If anyone paid the full special edition pre-order price on this game and maybe added a season pass or whatever other money grabs, wow, biggest rip off in video game history. I mean that. This game isn't worth $5 never mind $80 and is a downgrade from GOW4

    End result? All of the fanatic GOW4 players who I'm friendly with no longer play any Gears title. A bunch of people I know uninstalled the game to save disc space - that's how bad this game is. GOW4 was 100% the reason why I bought an XB1 and GOW5 was going to be my reason for investing in the XB1X. It is safe to say I won't be buying that console to play this trash game

    ** For those saying this game looks amazing, I have a bunch of free eye tests vouchers from Specsavers. It's an impressive achievement for the developers to take this AAAA ++++ title and turn it into something I can't stand looking at.     Bunch of glitches and bugs. Game couldn't save after hours of spending time with the Hord Mode. All progress lost. Characters are one dimensional and boring. Dialogs are cringe as hell sometimes. And barely bring the story forward.

    Terrible. Filled with bugs and glitches on top of HORRIBLE, anti-consumer, predatory micro-transactions. How far Gears of War franchise has fallen, no wonder they changed the name to Gears 5, this isn't true Gears of War and it doesn't deserve that name, this is just another terrible product from Xbox Games Studios.

    Gears 5 is an odd thing; it's neither a grand leap forwards, nor a complete rehash of what came before, and therefore sits somewhere in the middle of the two. On the whole, the improvements do outweigh the negatives (the non-linear approach to campaign levels and the small changes to horde mode being some of the most notable), and while The Coalition still has some work to do to really make the series its own, this is a far bolder and more varied approach the relatively safe Gears 4. If you love shooters and you want a good place to jump back into the series, this is perfect place to work the rust out of your lancer.

    Gears 5 offers a solid portion of brutal action with several refreshing new things. If you have intentionally avoided games from this series, the fifth sequel probably won´t change your mind, but if you are looking for a quality action game and you are still a fan of multiplayer, try it.     Gears 5 proposes a breathtaking solo campaign and a generous array of multiplayer modes. Even if the recipe remains classic, we really want to go through with it. The characters are rather well written, the environments are often spectacular, and Jack the robot adds some salt to the gameplay. A visual feast and glorious action game that perfectly demonstrate Xbox One X's true power.
