    FIFA 20 like so many of its previous iterations doesn’t play very much like a real game of football. That’s someone due to smashing 90 minutes of game into a playable 10 minutes. The problem is that FIFA 20 simply isn’t very enjoyable in comparison to the likes of PES 2020. EA Vancouver has provided substantial new content in this year’s game, Volta football being the main mode, includingFIFA 20 like so many of its previous iterations doesn’t play very much like a real game of football. That’s someone due to smashing 90 minutes of game into a playable 10 minutes. The problem is that FIFA 20 simply isn’t very enjoyable in comparison to the likes of PES 2020. EA Vancouver has provided substantial new content in this year’s game, Volta football being the main mode, including new House Rules for FUT and friendly matches, revamped set-pieces and a defense overhaul. The presentation with a Sky Sports broadcast, and full detail ripe in the menus. You only need to open a FUT pack and see the effort of presentation put forth. You can play the pass and shoot football here if you wish, but really these 3v3, 4v4 and 5v5 games are about skill and self-expression. The story itself isn't full of twists or turns and won't convince anyone that this is how real football is, but it’s still a somewhat gratifying experience overall. The quality of animation remains impressive as it does each year, but this year more than any previously, FIFA’s players feel more locked to 8-way movement grid, as PES 2020 feels more depth to it's overall control scheme. Defenders are now much less automated when you’re in control of them and the standing tackle has more range variant when you hold the action, so in this sense FIFA 20 presents new scoring options. FIFA 20 is engaging and it holds your attention, invites you to imagine being in possession of a full squad, and gets you plotting your journey from here to there in detail thanks to new season objectives. It rewards grinding with various currency and customization options, and makes you feel like you’re part of an online football club. In that regard, it’s ahead of PES 2020 and its comparatively lesser MyClub. FIFA 20’s biggest shortfall is the lack of producing an overall enjoyable football match. So if you're looking for the better football experience this year, my recommendation would be PES 2020 for the Xbox One. Long time fans of the FIFA franchise may still find enjoyment here but be sure not to pass over the option of PES 2020 in your Xbox One library as well.… Expand

    What a disappointment. In my naivety, every year I assume EA will respond to the bad reviews and all the negative press surrounding their name by listening to what the players want. Instead they keep distracting with new game modes (The Journey, Volta) while devoting minimal effort to the career mode.

Instead they keep distracting with new game modes (The Journey, Volta) while devoting minimal effort to the career mode.

    We have a few added career mode features: manager customisation, post/pre-match cutscene conferences that impact the team's morale, a Player Conversation tab where players approach you about their play time, transfer requests, etc, and how you reply impacts the player's morale. A few other small changes such as the Y button no longer bringing you to your emails, no controller vibration on the deadline day clock countdown, and the ability to go straight to the transfer hub after shortlisting a player, which is handy. But after the novelty of those features wear off (it already has after a few hours), it's same old career mode. Not to mention, at the time of writing there's still no game faces for Skriniar, De Jong, Bruno Fernandes, Arthur, Pepe, Semedo, Gelson Martins, Suso, Ndombele, Aouar, Lauro Martinez, Van de beek, Mason Greenwood and more.

    My biggest gripe with the game though is the clunky gameplay. Every new FIFA has had better gameplay than it's predecessor, even if the improvement was marginal. FIFA 20 is an exception.

    The ball physics and player movements are working against each other. An attacker makes a good run but the ball lags, bounces and bobbles behind...or does the opposite and is over-hit. First touches are awful, as are volleys. Possession/tiki taka is near impossible because the game doesn't flow. Tackles are horrendous. When defending with a full back on the wing near the by-line, the body check seems to have been removed, or hard to achieve. In FIFA 19 you just hold B and he'd jostle/nudge the winger off the ball. Now he lunges in with a one foot tackle, often conceding a foul. It's not all bad - finesse shots are better and penalties are growing on me, but overall I'd take FIFA 19 with new kits and lineups any day of the week.

    If you're mainly a career mode player you'll enjoy the new features in the first few days then you'll be disappointed. It's not worth the £54.99 I paid. Might be worth considering PES this year.    … Expand

    Fifa 19 rehashed with more scripting. Rating should be 3/10 but giving it a zero for dilution in anticipation of the fan boys / EA employees rating it a 10. Thankfully PES2020 is the goods this year.

    Career mode is easily the most broken mode, as a lot of things that have been "added", don't work, become repetitive, or haven't been added. For example, press conferences are a new feature that has taken 30 seconds to get us d to, so you know what the best answer is for every question, that sometimes don't even make sense. The new news section is glitchy and can contain articles that don't make any sense to the game you've played. Dynamic Potential either works or doesn't work for some people, and some teams don't even have their 3rd kits, which were in the demo. The only good thing in career mode is the manager customisation, which affects the gameplay least and I would gladly sacrifice for many other things to work.

    Volta, the new Futsal game mode, is also very broken. Teams can play a player (or players) which are on your team, so you can build a squad full of them, cutscenes are glitchy at times and the gameplay is very inconsistent in Volta.

    Then the money maker, Ultimate Team. One of the most Pay 2 Win game modes where a lucky Mbappe pack pull, can take you up 2 divisions with the right knowledge of what you are doing. You can no longer see your friends teams, despite making a big thing of playing friendlies with your mates. The Transfer Market has already been broken on PS4 and PC, and will go down countless more times throughout the year. Player ratings also make no sense. Mustafi 83 and Matip 82? What were EA thinking.

    The general gameplay however, is what brings me back to play FIFA 20. It's a lot slower and methodical, but a well worked counter attack feels rewarding, and stopping one feels nice too. New player instructions means there are more ways to find what tactics suit you best and offers you more choice to get around certain challenges. The soundtrack is also an improvement on the previous installment bit still not FIFA 15 good.

    That is where the positives end however, as one of the promo stars, João Felix has a game face in many pictures, but not in game, many transfers haven't been completed and the loss of Juventus to PES is a big one, which means Piemonte Calcio take their place (although players aren't affected).

    EA have also had terrible feedback to the #FixCareerMode movement, even going as far to blocking people asking for a priority over other game modes. They have also been removing threads from the forum and have been disabling comments describing more bugs that others have discovered.

    EA have so much potential when it comes to FIFA, but they will never reach it. It's such a shame as I love football and want to play a decent football arcade game, to relax from Football Manager, they will have me hooked for a little while, but when they inevitably change the gameplay pack to a Ping Pong simulator, they will lose me.

    Signed up literally just to give this game a terrible rating. Honestly thought it's what I expected. Career mode has no authenticity or real life simulation at all. We all know that all the focus goes on FUT. Why bother having anything else in the game if it's going to be this poor?

The person who gave me the gift said they would buy it for me again. So basically, almost $200 was spent on this game (if the original pre-order wasn't refunded, which i'm still unsure about).

    This is by far the most disappointing game I've every played. Not the most disappointing FIFA game. Career mode, the main reason that I got the game for my birthday and was so excited for it, is completely broken. I won't describe the glitches in it since its been so heavily publicised but it makes the game almost unplayable and I don't have faith that EA will patch most of them any time soon.

    Don't buy this game whatsoever, at least not until patches come out for it. Waste of money    … Expand

    I've always loved football games. I bought this one discounted PlayStation 4, then a week later I received the Xbox copy as a gift. And I had to fake being happy and say thank you. I had to fake being happy only because the game, and it's mechanics (and all the micro transactions) were a huge turn off.

    It is a waste of money and time!

They refuse to make even the most simple upgrades to career mode and the like. Nobody cares about press conferences that they're just going to skip after a week when the nuance wears off. How about you let us upgrade stadiums? OrThere are so many bugs in this game. It's unplayable. And EA refuses to acknowledge and fix them as long as FUT still works because they only care about money. They refuse to make even the most simple upgrades to career mode and the like. I'm not sure how all the things wrong with it weren't addressed in testing but regardless, they're working on it. Gameplay wise, the only thing wrong right now is switching player, which - even when using the right analog stick - seems to not change to who you are trying to select. They changed defending so that you can't just rely on your AI players to tackle for you, YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO DEFEND YOURSELF NOW, which I love because I've always been a big fan of defending manually. Because the scrubs can't defend manually, they abuse the 'Drop Back' custom tactic, which allows me, a possession based player, to have so much room around the edge of their box, play my way through and score. I haven't lost a single game on Online Seasons yet because the game is rewarding positive play instead of just having pacey players and spamming through ball, and I LOVE IT.… Expand

    With as many years as they've had to get this game right, I should be able to give a negative score. Greedy EA. Volta is a cheap gimmick. The core gameplay is still a disgrace. It's also scripted so it's more like an 'interactive' game than you really having control. DO NOT BUY!

Very unfortunate how Fifa has turned the last couple years, Fifa 19 was the worst Fifa of all-time and Fifa 20 feels even worse.     Because of there awful servers FUT mode (online games) are ruined unplayable..card packs an there % are a lie! Player stats are a lie..goalkeepers are awful...only playable with a large credit or debit card... career mode is a nno go zone

    FIFA 19 v2, this is an absolute disgrace to gaming. Why is there a football mini-game in my gambling simulator? EA has forgotten that they are a game company. Career mode is a buggy mess and volta is a poor man's fifa street. I will not support EA anymore.

    They promised before release that issues(mainly career mode) would be fixed this year(which is still on their website), yet here we are with it being worse than ever, surely that's got to be false advertising, some people say "I don't know why you're surprised" but here's the thing, the've not made such promises before a release like that. For FIFA 19 we all knew the career mode would remain almost untouched, that wasn't the case in the build up for this release.

    A transfer update was added on release day but was removed a short time later with no explanation, they claim to be operating with some transparency but you have to go out of your way to find an account of an EA employee on Twitter for any kind of vague update, their website and official social media accounts say nothing other than Ultimate Team related bs.

    Another sign of how they operate, they want people to be pushed towards ultimate team, this seemed to be why you couldn't play house rules against friends online with FIFA 19, now we have the same issue with Volta, no option to play online with friends.

    The new penalty system makes no sense, it shouldn't be easier to save a penalty than it is to score and the new system is completely useless when it comes to playing local matches, there's no way you can accurately take them without the stupid target because of how sensitive it is but then your opponent will see where your shooting. They've had 25 years to come up with a good system but we are presented with this mess.

    The AI is shambolic, that's where there is no surprise, Legendary difficulty will randomly seem to disable their defenders and let you stroll through, switch it up to Ultimate and you can see a goal coming a mile off because they will start playing ping pong football with incredibly accurate one touch passing all the way from the back while your players out of your control appear to close their eyes and run away from the ball.

    They're just terrible at making games, it's a crime that the likes of Red Dead and The Witcher cost the same amount as this trash, a game in development for many years vs one that seems to have been thrown together very quickly without testing.    … Expand

    Actually amazed at how far backwards EA continue to go every year. You think it can't get much worse, so you buy the game hoping it got better than last year. But time and again we are bitterly disappointed.

    The gameplay I find has improved in comparison to recent years with movement and Speen becoming more realistic however there are still huge flaws the crossing bug needs to be fixed you will struggle to score from a header from a cross in every aspect of the game 95 finishing means if he is 6 yards out its a goal end of

    False advertising from EA. Career mode is unplayable and takes away from the immersion. You may as well play FIFA 19 and wait for EA to fix everything. That doesn't look like anytime soon either. Awful from EA, this is a slap to the loyal fan base they have. I hope they learn from this and get their act together

They promised they spent time on the game, and in fact it’s worse than any FIFA I have ever played. AI defending is weak. Sliders don’t change much. Unrealistic tables. Teams playing youth players constantly. Being fired for giving contract extensions. No trophy for celebrations. The list is now reaching 30 major bugs and glitches.     Volta is half a game mode, where are the Volta online drop in games or the Volta pro clubs, seems like no effort has been made for Volta and it shows and this game mode becomes stale after a few games, even nhl has online drop ins, also sort out career mode, top 6 teams playing reserve players and getting relegated, just no effort at all has gone into this game

    Been playing career mode for well over 10 years now on past FIFAs. FIFA 20 promised so much for career mode but it’s so broken it’s not playable. There are millions of people that only want to play offline and EA **** on them every year. We pay for the game, it’s a lot of money to loose if we all jump to PES.

    Worst game ever. Get ready to be disappointed. Defending is terrible and the pace is so damn slow. The graphics have gotten a bit better but has also took a few steps back. Fut is terrible I play 2 matches and honestly I'm so bored there isn't anything that makes me want to play more than that. Save your money and throw a big F U to EA greedy ****

    THis game is so bad in defense!there is absolutely no way in defending,there is no balance in the game,however if you master the game you can learn how to score,but when it comes to defending you have to rely on luck and little amount of skill to get back the ball.
    If you miss tackle in this game that will be the end.do not listen to critics,it's a nightmare for gamers

    As a fullmanual player is so obvios when the handicappping aka scritpting kicks-in , you have 0 chanches to win or obtain a draw ( practicaly i strugle to create a chance , i aim perfectly to score but game has other plans and send the ball near post, player delay shot on purpose etc.) ,,,,The handicapping is killing all the fun in the game and is frustrating & depressing....     - Morale system with no risk / reward - why would you give a negative response? - Manager objectives: I started a CM with Oldham in League 2. I got sacked after 38 games with the team in 6th because I did not meet some of the objectives. One was to finish with a £9m profit for the year. If i sold every single player, I would not make £9m. The objectives can be impossible, and now that you actually face repercussions for failing them, it’s a glaring problem. (This is a game breaker).
    - Headers are utterly pointless. I’ve played over 75 games and not scored a single corner. I have tried EVERY possible way to approach these. Do search this online, other people agree that the direction and height is completely random, with next to no success.
    - With default settings on the second hardest difficulty, I played 8 matches in a row where the score was 2-1 to either team. Across 25 matches there was never a score other than 2-1, 1-1 or 1-0. Is that really realistic? - Your players make ZERO forward runs. Everyone is incredibly static. If you want to show some urgency so change team instructions, everyone is out of stamina by 60 minutes! - There are never fouls by the AI. New Free Kick mechanics are in there somewhere, but I’ve had about 1 Free Kick every 30 matches so I have no idea if they’re an improvement. - Blocked shots - the AI has an incredible block shot ratio. - Rebound goals - so many goals conceded from knocking it into an empty net after an initial save. - Winning a tackle but not the ball...unbelievable how often you can win your challenge but the ball still fall to the AI players. Do yourself a favour and don’t bother buying it. EA have had almost a month since early access to try and patch these issues but instead they have done nothing. They are showing utter contempt for loyal customers and I hope it hits them in the pocket.    … Expand

    Add to that the many, many new bugs in the game this year, like having to go out and back into Volta every time you want to pay your friends and the way you have to redo all of your controller settings because it doesn't save them and you can see how lazy they have been with their flagship title this year. It's almost as though they want to hand the title to Konami.

    EA really showed contempt for it's fans this year and proved that they are only interested in you buying coins to play FUT.

    EA, where is the love for football? Where's the passion? Where have you shown any love for the fans of the series? You must've forgotten how serious Pro Evolution Soccer is as competition.    … Expand

    For all the scathing comments about FUT's predatory and disgusting practices, it cannot be denied that FIFA 20 is still a great game. If micro-transactions are a concern then, avoid them - it is pretty easy to do with the sheer number of available options, which are next to none in this genre, with Volta and House Rules being incredibly fun additions to FIFA's on-going repertoire of modes. The subtle evolution of player skill moves might be inaccessible to the casual player, but the experts that can take advantage of these changes will definitely be able to test their skills. FIFA 20 is an evolution to the series, which has surprised with its diversity of options, and should only continue to grow as the decade goes on.
