You play as a rag-tag group of soldiers stooping in for a routine supply run when you're met by a friendly robot. This robot warns the crew of the plight about to befall the humans at the hands of the robots and supplies them with the means to stop it. Your story is built from the path you take over countless nodes on you way to your missions. The world is broken into 5 sections, each of those areas has objectives. Within each objective is a spiderweb of encounters you must use fuel to navigate. These nodes can be a variety of encounters, only some result in combat. Combat is your standard grid-based combat. Position your units, and take out the enemies while collecting loot. Most missions that involve combat are just that, clear the area room by room. Boss battles are few and far between, but they're hard and will make you think, and keep you on your toes. There are hundreds of pieces of gear, and tons of skills to build your characters with, so you can create the perfect team for the way you fight. You can customize your units, from their appearance to their name, and death is permanent, so this ensures you think about everything you do, as losing a crew member can be hard. Depth of Extinction is a great game, with fast combat and a fun feel. Tactical RPG fans will have a blast with this game. Expand

There’s plenty to appreciate for turn-based tactics fans willing to look past the terrible virtual cover art and learn the nuances of Depth of Extinction‘s combat, or for fans looking for something a bit different than the usual XCOM combat — just keep in mind that it might be difficult to find just the right amount of challenge.

Depth of Extinction on Xbox One is a straight up, old-school turn-based RPG that is squarely aimed at fans of the genre. There's nothing else to be tempted by here, but what is on offer is a solid dose of strategy action for those with enough patience to stick it out.
