Darkestville Castle is a hilarious and interesting point and click adventure game about a sarcastic demon that can be hindered by illogical puzzles. It’s hard work being an evil genius. You’d think a big battle would be all about taking it easy and having fun, spending the time to enjoy the things like creating an army of mutant crocodiles with laser beams sewn to their heads, but as Cid –Darkestville Castle is a hilarious and interesting point and click adventure game about a sarcastic demon that can be hindered by illogical puzzles. It’s hard work being an evil genius. You’d think a big battle would be all about taking it easy and having fun, spending the time to enjoy the things like creating an army of mutant crocodiles with laser beams sewn to their heads, but as Cid – the local, unfriendly neighbourhood demon of Darkestville – will tell you, being this bad takes effort. Darkestville Castle emulates the genre’s conventions to the letter, which depending on how much you enjoy these games is either a massive turn on or a horrific turn off.Players are put in the shoes of a demon named Cid who spends his days terrorizing the town of Darkestville. Most of Cid's actions are nothing more than a nuisance to the town (skipping out on his bar tab or creating mutant chickens to roam the city streets), so most of the townsfolk have come to begrudgingly accept Cid as a citizen of Darkestville.Cid our main character is a highlight it's good some games finally care about it. There's some decent puzzles too to solve put's some extra sauce to the game. There's some problems about voice over too and most puzzles are irritatingly obscure. So It's kind of hard to be exited about this genre anymore yet it's A great game so fans of the genre should rejoice on their Xbox One. Expand

Bought this gem after trying out a demo on XBox and it really exceeded my expectations! The humor is on another level, don't know when the last time was when I laughed that much playing a game. The puzzles have a nice difficulty level after the first few simple "warm up" puzzles but usually don't get as absurd as e.g. in Monkey Island. Overall I can only recommend playing it.

Darkestville Castle took me a little by surprise, not because of its quality and great humor, both of which I expected, but how authentic it comes across as. It’s as if Darkestville Castle was hiding away all these years, taken straight from the 90’s and only unearthed now for fans to enjoy. It nailed the comedic aspect and gameplay just right, and although I found many of the puzzles a little too obtuse, I was smiling all the way until the credits rolled and should be played by any classic point and click adventure fan.

While there is some room for minor adjustments and polish, the overall enjoyment can overshadow any small negatives. The only thing stopping someone from liking it is their own taste. I played it all in one sitting and had zero issues. Even the loading times were quite fast. At a technical level, it’s smooth and is impressive in quality. After playing the demo I knew it would be something I needed to finish. I would suggest this to any fans of the genre, especially for those who enjoyed (and remember) Monkey Island.

Darkestville Castle is everything you want from a point and click puzzler. A simple but interesting story line, decent voice acting, and tricky but fun puzzles. The game can be completed in under 10 hours give or take – about standard for a point and click adventure game as you only really play them once, so you don’t want them so long that you lose interest. For those who enjoy point and click adventures, this is definitely a fun one to pick up.
