Thankfully Cuphead is a classic and a game that has managed to deliver in every area. The first thing you will notice about the game is the amazing art design and soundtrack. The visuals are simply stunning and unlike any other game I’ve ever played, and the accompanying music makes the game even more enjoyable. The gameplay is very challenging, and while some people may find it a little too difficult I found it to be great. The main reason why I liked the challenging gameplay is because I didn’t once get frustrated, which is rare in a game like this. The bosses in the game are some of the most creative and imaginative I’ve ever come across, and each boss keeps the game fresh. The variety doesn’t stop there because each different level is packed to the brim with variety, which in turn makes the world come alive and makes for an even enjoyable adventure. There is also a decent amount of variety when it comes to the abilities, and the best thing is that each ability matters when it comes to fighting the bosses. Cuphead also has local co-op for you to enjoy, and to say me and my friend had fun would be an understatement. I just wish that an online co-op mode would have been included. At the end of the day Cuphead has gone above and beyond in all aspects, and this in my opinion makes the game one of the best games the Xbox One has to offer. Cuphead is one of them rare games that gets everything right, and the uniqueness it has to offer is like no other I’ve experienced. I urge people to look past the difficulty because it doesn’t frustrate, and the charm the game has makes you look past the difficulty. Without a shadow of a doubt this is one of the best games of the year, and I fully expect it to win numerous awards. Expand

Exhilarating and Beautiful but, hard to Master.

Cuphead mesmerizes you with it unique visuals, great soundtrack and exhilarating gameplay. It is fun, lots of fun. But, it is not for the faint of heart. It is not easy by any measurable means And that seems to be almost the universal complaint against the game itself. It's difficult to master. Well boo-hoo on you all. I say go back to your safe gaming spaces. Count me among those that are glad this game doesn't make things easy. With recent platform games we have become spoiled with auto-aims and assists, easy game patterns, repetitive levels with s boss battles that are boringly simple and have lack of creativity. Nowadays our gameplay is to whizz through a game level after game level. There is none of that here. Except for the auto saves (and yes infinitive lives) we are taken back to a time when platform games were actually difficult. We have to throw away our spoiled ways and hunker down learn to master a game. All the levels and boss battles take real work. You have real sense of accomplishment when you are done with and each and every level. It is a real workout to play this game.

Cuphead is run and gun gameplay with 1 on 1 boss battles or optional 2 on 1 with local co-play. You can see how games like Contra series and Mega-man and many other early platform games have influenced the game makers at Studio MDHR.

However, if you want an easy levels go play a Mario game. Mario games are fun but, very forgiving. This game is not designed for those who want bouncy bounce time. In other words, is not child's play. This game is for grown-up gamers of all ages. Life is hard, this game is hard. Deal with it. It is wondrous journey that will frustrate those with weak gaming constitutions but, reward those willing to stick it out.

Think of it this way. Most platform games are like getting in shape by doing a daily walk in your neighborhood with your girlfriends. Nice walk full of gabbing about your lives. Not difficult to do and pretty much the same experience each time you go out. Cuphead is like getting in shape at the Navy Seal training camp with live explosives during the obstacle runs and weights attached to your feet during the swimming. Nothing is easy. It is not for the faint of heart. Most will fail so many times they will lose count. But, when you get done you will have truly accomplished something.

Cuphead's biggest achievement is actually feeling unique and original, although being one of the oldest genres of games. For me the only thing that keeps it from being a 10/10 is the lack of a meaningful progression system like other platformers such as the Megaman X series.

Cuphead is like one of those rigged carnival games, which are intriguing but you quickly realize it's a waste of time, and for the most part you are set up for failure. The difference between those midway games and Cuphead is that the former usually costs a buck or two and after you try it out, you move on. The latter suckers you into spending $20 for a digital equivalent of that kind of experience you can subject yourself to over and over again. It has an an appealing visual presentation, and when it was announced I couldn't wait to play it because I am no stranger to 2D action games on the original Nintendo and Sega consoles. I've heard people defend the difficulty of this game by saying that it simply hearkens back to those kinds of games but I think they are experiencing buyers remorse and/or trying to be a good sport about it, which is fine, but I have played many of these types of games in the past; the kind from the 80s and 90s and they are not this damn hard. I've even beaten some of them and thoroughly enjoyed the brutal ones like Contra or Super Mario Brothers.

At what point do you draw a line between challenging and cheap? This game is cheap as hell. You have 3 hits and you're dead, which is totally acceptable, but there are way too many standard things that have been omitted from the game which makes no sense. There's simply NOT ENOUGH ROOM on each stage to dodge the barrage of projectiles, and to add insult to injury, sometimes it's not clear what hurts you and what doesn't. You have 3 lives and you're dead. OK. Cool. It can still be that way with extra lives to pick up throughout the levels, maybe to -- you know, have more than 3? And if that is completely out of the question then fine, maybe it could have been designed so that you can replenish your health back to 3. Why couldn't they put some kind of reward or incentive like that to keep the flow of the gameplay going? Even if it did allow something like that, it would still be tough as nails. I'm not even talking about making it really easy, I'm just rattling off what I kept thinking while I played it, and if it had some features like that it, it would resemble a real game and not some annoyingly unfair shooting gallery. In those old games like Contra, they're hard but you can definitely do it after a few attempts. In this game I felt like I simply could not do it. Maybe people too young to remember the NES days think this is what it was like? Well, it really wasn't. Even the 16-bit era had ridiculously hard games, but you could still beat them, like Earthworm Jim or something. That is a hard game but you can actually play it for a while, and even if you're getting your ass kicked there's still a way forward. There's no sense of progression or trial and error here because it's never a mystery why you died -- you know the reason: you got hit by something you could not avoid fast enough. So you do it again and again and again until you somewhat "master" the annoying unfairness of it all, and yes I beat it. I'm not being a sore loser, I just wanted to express that I felt manipulated into buying this game because it seemed like something that would have platforming levels and bosses at the end of each world like Super Mario. Instead, it's designed to make you fail hundreds of times so it that it can seem like an old school "hardcore" action game but it's not. It's just some schlock made by a team of hipsters in the 2010s, and they sold it by masking it with a novel art style. Good job, you got my $20. Games that are too easy annoy the hell out of me, and I avoid them, but games that are pointlessly hard and repetitive irritate me in the same way. If you're trying to pick up a game to play for an hour or two to have a good time on the weekend then pick up something else.

Flawless mechanics, challenging gameplay, and the best art/sound design I may have played in any game. The hand drawn animations are insanely detailed and creative. Note that it is a very difficult game to play, as it should be, but you can pick an easy mode on each level. Regular mode is a challenge.

While the music and the art direction were the main focuses of this game leading up to release, the game offers far beyond that. This game is a burst of joyous creativity and passion. This game is a burst of joyous creativity and passion. There is no filler here. The whole game is the good part of the game, and that leads to a surprisingly little amount of frustration despite how hard it is. The music and visuals draw you in immediately and are a joy to look at and listen to. Dying didn't really seem like a punishment to me, as it meant more time to soak in all the sights and sounds. There is a tremendous level of care and detail here, even for its cartoonish look. Nothing feels or sounds out of place and it makes playing the game that much more enjoyable. Gameplay wise, the controls feel smooth and responsive. To me, they looked wonky in the early gameplay footage I saw, maybe I watched too much Dean gameplay, but while you're playing the controls are fine. The bosses are the star here. Even though some are more fun and interesting than others, they are all great and all challenging. No boss plays out like another and they force you to focus on every detail of their behavior in order to win. This is enhanced by a surprising amount of abilities that you can equip and experiment with. These two things kept the game fresh. However, some people might be turned off by this game. There is a big emphasis on trial and error. You will never one cycle a boss, and you have to dedicate at least 20 minutes to each one, at least on the later worlds. Me personally, I never raged, no matter how many times I died. I got frustrated and burnt out to the point where I made numerous stupid mistakes, and at that point was laughing at myself more than anything. But despite the difficulty, the game kept pulling me back, and when I landed the final hit on a boss, I was re-energized each time, and thought, "Let's do this **** again". Few things in gaming have been so fun and rewarding, yet ball bustingly hard as these boss battles.
The complaints I have are pitifully minor, but I still want to mention them. The run and gun levels are overshadowed by the boss battles, which is more of a testament to how good the bosses are rather than how bad the platforming is. But I rarely wanted to do them. While they are fun, unique, and just as challenging as the bosses, this isn't the main draw of the game. The only point to these levels is to collect gold coins which are used to buy upgrades. Once you collect all the gold coins in a level, I don't see many people replaying the run and gun sections.
I've seen a few people complain about bugs. I haven't had many problems. There were a few instances where I had the auto parry perk equipped and the auto parry procked but I still took damage from the projectile. Other than that, the game is near perfect on a technical level, at least for me.
There are a few instances in boss battles where stuff comes down to RNG. Sometimes things just unfold in a crappy way and you get screwed over by it. However, this isn't anything that happens with much regularity and 99% of the time the failures are your own fault and can be fixed with a lot of persistence.
This game is everything good about gaming. Simple yet deep, punishing yet rewarding, and above all else, fun. This is the most fun I've ever had getting my ass beat. Even though I probably won't play this game for 2000 hours like other games, there is no denying this is a great damn game, and Cuphead will no doubt be a gaming memory I'll keep with me for a long time.

The moment I saw it, it became my most anticipated game. For almost four years, I've anxiously awaited it. Expectations were sky high. The wait was well worth it, as it is a phenomenal game, balanced and polished to perfection. The 1930s art style, the soundtrack, the boss and level design - all perfect. I haven't seen a similar level of quirky creativity since Rayman Origins, six years ago. There's not a single thing I can even criticize. Every second is a thrill, and even with hundreds of deaths, I couldn't wipe the smile from my face.

I want to show it to friends. I want to show it to strangers. I want to show it to extraterrestrial beings. It's the reason I enjoy playing games.

Cuphead is a breath of fresh air. Some how forgotten from modern games, responsive controls is something you're going to find in cuphead. Artistic style that puts other games in shame. This side scrolling shooter is the best game I've played in the last two years.

In the beginning you are given a short but effective tutorial of the controls and then you will be pushed down the cliff to your inevitable doom. As you begin to play the first level, you think: ok.. this isn't so bad, and then the situation escalates very quickly. I died 3 times in the fist run and gun level. Yeah well I lost the count in the second one. The difficulty is absolutely infuriating. Cuphead is so hard I broke my first controller since ps1 era. After this Bloodbourne feels like a walk in the park. I hate this game but I love it. I wanna go back and do more rage quitting. There's couple boss battles that are a bit cheap. There's just too much sh't on the screen and it feels like a bullet hell game at those times. Old time jazzy soundtrack fits perfectly in the game. Cuphead is beautifully animated. Every frame was hand drawn during the development. i found myself laughing to the animations constantly.

This is how you make a good game. Do your own thing and stop copying everybody else! This game is very close to being a master piece. I won't call it that because its way to short for it and the difficulty almost ruins it. Almost. I'm in awe that somebody actually had the guts to make something like this in these days.

I feared for the worst and hoped for something great, but this game is much more, it's fine art, amazing orchestral music with very difficult but rewarding gaming. There are some mixed in "run and gun" platforming levels but it is mostly boss fights, it feels familiar in many ways, feels like a real modern day megaman revisit, unlike some other weaker games that tried to bring a megaman feel back, Cuphead really makes old school shoot 'em ups proud and even should make Disney proud. It's gorgeous in all it's hand drawn moving and static parts. Great with two people and even alone, I highly recommend it to any and all gaming folk. Even just to watch things in motion or listen to the music it's well done. Microsoft made the right decision investing into this game, it should definitely pay off. While it is difficult, it is fair. Any losses are lessons and a new strategy can be applied to the next fight, plus there is a "simple" or easy option in boss levels for those finding the game to be a bit too challenging. I hope to see additional content in the future, it's too great to not want more. Play and enjoy, it's a good time.
