In order to enjoy these games though they have to keep the frustration levels down and the enjoyment factor up, unfortunately Crimson Keep doesn’t do that well. The moment you begin the game it’s too difficult, which does impact the overall enjoyment of the levels considerably. This isn’t the game’s only problem, you have to deal with clunky controls and technical issues during your time with the game and holds the game back quite substantially. This is a shame because the game does have a few areas where it shines, such as fun combat elements and upgrades that actually feel like they improve your experience, but these good aspects quickly get lost in the shortcomings within the game design. The presentation side of the game doesn’t improve these shortcomings either because everything looks overly simplified for the presentation they are trying to achieve. Accompanying sound design doesn’t deliver anything that stands out which makes traversing a tedious affair means the level design suffers from this. For the price of admission, I expected more from Crimson Keep, and even though it offers you a few enjoyable moments, it just gets too much wrong. In the end the game seems to frustrate you and unfortunately I can’t recommend a game like that to you at the price point given. Maybe we will see some patches or a price drop to make this title more bang for your hard earned money. Expand

Released to mixed reviews, largely complaining about difficulty and true rogue like experience. This is a major attraction to the game for me, along with the reasonable price.

Crimson Keep is far from being a good game. Randomness sometimes unfair and bugs make it very difficult to enjoy the game.

I really don’t enjoy being negative towards a game, especially a smaller indie title, but there’s no possible way in good conscience I can recommend Crimson Keep in any sort of fashion, especially at the exorbitant $25.99 CAD pricepoint. There are so many glaring issues mechanically that it was a constant frustration to play, devoid of any real enjoyment and doesn’t seem to be self-aware enough to realize it.

It gives me no pleasure at all to say that I didn’t enjoy Crimson Keep. At all, if I’m being honest. It drove me mad, and not in that tough, but satisfying, Dark Souls way. It just drove me mad to a point where I didn’t want to play it again. It’s a tedious, nightmarishly dull experience that I have no intention of going back to.
