Code Shifter is a neat idea that simply does not do itself any favors. The game play is fine, just uninspired. I wish it was more fleshed out with more variety in combat and design. The ideas are there even if the game play falls short. Code Shifter is a game aimed at such a niche audience; I wonder if it will find one at all.

Code Shifter on Xbox One is definitely an interesting game. The gameplay doesn’t overstay its welcome, and it’s solid enough to entertain you through each stage. The biggest strike against Code Shifter is that it thinks its story is the main reason you’re here. Due to the bizarre tonal shifts, unlikeable characters and huge exposition dumps, this just isn’t the case.

Code Shifter boasts a fantastic premise along with a commendable collection of classic characters. It's too bad that its gameplay is executed in a fashion that's substantially below Arc System Works' generally high bar.

Awesome Rainbow Corp is Ready to release their newest game, but random bugs are suddenly starting to pop up all over the game! One of the Programmers, Stells, has devised a debug program she calls CODE SHIFTER, allowing her to control her avatar Sera into the games code, and find the source of the bugs. Sera gains the ability to shift into the different characters as you progress. Blending together Watercolor Flat art, and 8bit pixel art CODE SHIFTER delivers a wacky side-scroller and a fun story about the development team. With 100 Arc System Works characters pulled into the game, 30 playable, and 70 summonable support characters, it's the largest cast of Arc System Works characters ever. In fact its the WHOLE cast of Arc System Works characters from their 25 game library! The base game is a fun cross between classic platforming and Beat 'Em' Up style gameplay. The game also features a Brawler game COLORFUL FIGHTERS as an extra mode, allowing you to pit the 30 playable characters against each other in an all-out brawl! The mode features up to 4 players, but alas, there is only local Live, and split screen play. The Title is one of the most impressive crossovers I've ever seen, and packs a fun game as well! Fans of Arc Systems Games will absolutely love it, and those unfamiliar with games like River City Ransom and Blueblaze won't be at a loss for fun but may miss most of the references. Full Review »
