Clunky Hero is a beautiful mix of platforming and Metroidvania-like action. The mechanics and controls feel fun to play, and the visual style really suits the style the developers are going for. Add in Monty Python-esque jokes and we’ve got a bit of a winner here.

That title was always going to be a challenge to shake. With so many good Metroidvanias out there, spilling out of Game Pass on a weekly basis, Clunky Hero can’t help but feel slow and cumbersome in comparison. It’s large, dense, and at its best when you’re exploring but, in every other way, Clunky Hero succumbs to its name.

With so many Metroidvania games on the market, Clunky Hero will be drowned out by a multitude of far superior titles. Even if it has its moments, there is absolutely nothing that makes it stand out against similar, better-crafted titles like Hollow Knight or Monster Sanctuary. If anything, it’s worth picking up for a cheap laugh due to its lack of purpose.

Clunky Hero had attracted us with its shiny visuals and its promises of Metroidvania tinged with RPG and humor. In the end, it's a visually successful game, but with an insipid base, a terrible level design and big optimization problems.

Clunky hero has some good things going for it. The story is generic but I did like the humour in it. The controls are excellent. Fighting isClunky hero has some good things going for it. The story is generic but I did like the humour in it. The controls are excellent. Fighting is straight forward. There is a big problem of balance. While the usual enemies are easy the boss are way too hard. The saving points aren't well placed and no autosave. Since you get NPC that ask for quest, returning to them is an absolute pain of backtracking. The fast travel system is too far apart and almost useless. So, while the realization is solid, the structure of the game is not so good. I give it 60% but I didn't have the heart to finish it. Full Review »
