Retro platformers is a genre that I’ve been interested in ever since I was a child and there have certainly been some classics over the year’s, but in my opinion this genre has lost its way in recent years. Thankfully Celeste has reminded me why I love this particular genre so much and for me it’s pretty much perfect in every single way. Obviously the most important thing about a platformer is the platforming itself and thankfully everything here has been done to perfection. Each little movement feels great and the amount of immersion the platforming creates is simply wonderful. The controls definitely play a part in making the platforming play great, and they’ve done a great job of keeping things very tight and responsive throughout. Throughout your time with the game you will notice a number of different mechanics in play at the same time and each different mechanic plays a part in creating a unique adventure. Another very important aspect in a game like this is the level design, and thankfully I can say the levels are superb. Each level plays differently from each other and there are a lot of clever concepts in each level and this without a doubt keeps things fresh and makes you want to carry on, which is very important. This is very important because the game can be extremely difficult and you will die a lot of times, so there is a little frustration but it wasn’t enough to stop me from playing and that’s great because in terms of content the game offers you a decent amount and you will enjoy this game for multiple hours. The presentation side of the game created a lot of fond memories for me and it’s certainly packed with a lot of charm. Visually the game screams retro and when you combine that with the excellent sound design then you get a game that takes you down memory lane, but it also has a modern feel to it at the same time which is awesome. At the end of the day I expected a lot from Celeste and it’s managed to reach my lofty expectations and some, which is very impressive to say the least. Everything about the game just clicks and I can see it being on a lot of people’s game’s of the year list come the end of the year. If you love old-school platformers then this is an absolute must buy and it should definitely be included on the best platformers of all time list. Expand

This fact is beautifully mirrored the in main character's own progression. Excellent platforming, very enjoyable level design. Story was stupid and over dramatic, I did not like the writing and would have preferred it be more abstract at the least.

The beauty comes from it's simplicity, difficulty, and extremely personal story about overcoming depression, anxiety, and other negative emotions. Although it is immensely difficult, it is very fair by only making you replay the screen. It is an excellent game, and I would recommend it to people who love platformers.

To the pleasant and beautiful retro visuals, the superb soundtrack, the all-to-loveable characters, and the simple but heavily impactful message and story, Celeste was able to create something so difficult and challenging, yet also so fueling and motivating that it was able to interpret its simple message on paper into something that can change the way you think and live your everyday life. But one of the most crucial aspects that make this game great is the difficulty. It's always hard and rewarding but doesn't force itself to be overly hard like other games of the genre like The End is Nigh or Super Meat Boy. There are always harder versions of the levels and many collectibles which make those loving death or exploring happy. Overall the developers have found a great balance between easy and difficult and for those that still find it too hard to enjoy there's always the really well done Assist Mode that makes the game easier the way you like and is completely customizable.

There is even a white block that looks like it came from Mario 3, and if you hold down while standing on it you fall behind it and interact with the background! Young gamers who haven't played Mario 3 wouldn't have made the connection. Also, it appears that many young gamers just cry a lot when a game is too hard. Run, jump, air-jump, reset, repeat. It's a good game for its genre but its genre it relatively overdone lately and it's repetitive. If you are in for a platformer of the basic style with some modern touches here and there go for it but don't expect anything revolutionary or original or varying.

The graphics of this game are incredibly stylized to be similar to a retro 8-bit game, though in my opinion cannot capture the magic others are able to flawlessly. The music in this game is admittedly splendid, but also quite short, leading to it being looped repeatedly, and with Celeste being a difficult game you will hear the same loop of music time and time again, and even in the short duration of my playtime, I found myself quickly growing tired of the song at that point. One thing commonly praised about this game was it's, supposedly, great controls, but, and I don't know if this is a problem exclusive to the Xbox One version, but the controls felt very slippery and the dash move seemed to never go in the direction I intended causing me to die repeatedly, I may just be a poor player, but I didn't feel comfortable with the game at all after my gameplay (Yes, I know that I shouldn't expect to be completely comfortable after just an hour, but I was still having to pause for a second or retry quite a few times due the small differences in placement of the control stick when it comes to a vertical dash opposed to a diagonal, especially in a game with extraordinarily fast input combinations). Personally, I could never find myself devoting more than the time I've already invested in this game, so three is where I'll leave it. Expand

I didn’t pay hundreds of dollars for a superior game system to have graphics that look like they were developed in the 1800’s. There is *nothing* charming or innovative about a boring platform game with a horrible retro look. I also believe that Metacritic is getting far too political in their reviews. I rarely read or rely on them any longer.

And in its intended state, I just don’t like it.. im not one of those people that enjoy dying 1 million times in a video game, I want to relax and enjoy my games, not be on the brink of going mad…
Thankfully this game offers an assist mode to deal with this..
I gave the game a shot for how it was meant to be, you get a single dash though crystals and strawberries will refill this gash, you can climb walls and it’s a bunch of dashing and doging spikes supermeat boy style..
it didn’t take long for me to be like nah, im not doing this.. and played the rest of the game with assists on…
at first with just infinite dodges, but this game my character some super saiyan pink hair to give the visual of clearly im cheating right now, so I thought might as well turn damage off too..
so whats meant to be some ultra hard game for sadomasochists for me was an exploration game and I feel no shame in that, I got the story, I got to see every inch of celeste, collecting the baries, the crystal hearts, the cassetes to unlock the side b version of a chapter and better yet playing with assist doesn’t turn trophies off, and this trophy list is full of silver trophies for finding these collectables…
Needless to say playing with assists does take away the satisfaction of completing chapters and areas..
I got to get a feel for the games intention the most while trying to get a trophy for completing celeste on pico-8, that’s right, the devolopers are evil jerks.. I got to level 27 out of 30 before I gave up on the trophy and the platinum, so don’t think with assist mode this is all of a sudden some easy platinum trophy because it isn’t… mount celeste is going to be in your way of it one way or another..
somehow nearly 25% of players have this trophy though, I don’t see how. The game must have only sold like 4 copies and the one person that got it is a developer or their parents just didn’t love them.
    jokes, im kidding..
im just not one of those people that think, you know what would be fun?
dying over and over and over and over and over and over until muscle memory and luck prevent me from doing so,
    Its not my thing…
that being said I do again still see the greatness in this game, the brilliant level design, the brutal difficulty, the option to skip the difficulty and just explore, a great trophy list aside from the pico 8 bit..
Celeste is a really great package for people that love retro games, stress, or trophies
    I give Celeste an 8/10

Most importantly, the controls are tight and every death was unquestionably within my control. Celeste is a solid precision platformer that was clearly made with a lot of love, and it deserves all the positive critical recognition. While the narrative wasn't anything groundbreaking, its visual and gameplay-based representations of anxiety and depression were truly something special. Последней фразе также сопутствует режим "на время", но преднамеренно убивать играющих в хламину, ни кто не собирается, что хорошо и для хардкор геймеров, и для более "расслабленной" аудитории.

As a platformer it's a fun game. The difficulty pretty fair, you die a bunch, but aside from a death count there isn't really any repercussions to dying other than having to try again from the beginning of that small area, so it's no big deal. As a platformer it's a fun game. Overall I was pleased with the difficulty level and had fun playing through this game, though it does get a bit boring at times.

However, one of my issues with the game and the main reason I couldn't bring myself to give it a higher score is that I was not too impressed with the controllers. The mechanic of having to hold a button to hold on to the walls and manually move up and down (different than most platformers where you hold on to walls upon contact and slowly slide down) combined to a dash ability that didn't feel very precise (I found that the game was a little too sensitive in detecting dashes as a diagonal movement when you're actually trying to go straight) made me not love the flow of the movements in this game, and as a platformer that's a big deal. The movement mechanics were obviously a design choice, and I suppose it's purely going to depend of the opinion of the player, but, personally, while I wouldn't call it bad and I did get used to it fairly quickly, I also I didn't love it. The flow of the movements just didn't feel great for me.

Another point that I didn't love was some of the visual design aspects of the levels. Sometimes things are not very visible or clear. For example, chapter 4 has some pink platforms in front of a pink background. I found myself more often than I would like to admit not noticing at first something that was right in front of my face and obviously made to be used (and I mean literally not seeing it at first). As this is not something I find myself experiencing on other games of the genre, I have to assume it's an issue I had with the design of this game in particular.

And finally: the story. Not going to lie, I didn't like it. The dialogs, especially the ones with your "evil" self, are pretty cringy and felt pretty shallow. I understand what they were aiming for with the theme of overcoming depression and anxiety, and I have played other games that did a phenomenal job with this theme, but Celeste just wasn't one of them. Perhaps it was the characters and the dialogs, or perhaps it was that story felt out of place with the gameplay (probably both), but the story didn't really work for me and felt mostly cringy and something I wanted to skip.

tl;dr: not one of my favorite platformers, and I probably won't be replaying it in the future, but I still had fun as a one time playthrough.

This game is so touching with the problems of Madeline and how she can overcome her problems with anxiety and depression. By the way, most of the people giving a low score is because they were bad players and didn't know the real commands to play the game. I know this is a retro game, giving more difficulty than many actual games. People nowadays are used to play easy games and I am a little upset with that.I am disappointed with the casual players who tried the game and did not learn to play it. Same with those who do not appreciate pixel art. It seems they never knew the true difficulty of the games that were years ago. I think that's a reason for giving a low score. Celeste is unique with the mechanics and I like the mechanics are different in other chapters. That makes the game less repetitive. On the other hand, Music is hilarious and majestic, love every song of the game. Expand

This is one of the best platforming experiences I've ever had the pleasure of playing. The visuals are great, the controls are perfectly balanced and extremely fun, the story is fantastic, and the challenge is hard, but incredibly enjoyable. This is one of the best games I've ever played. 10/10

Favorite platformer in years. I like how the challenge of climbing the mountain is essentially a metaphor for tackling anything that seems difficult. The whole gig about Celeste being some rallying cry for people with mental health disorders seems stupid to me, and I didn't get that out of the game at all.

The gameplay is really tight, and you can rest assured that if you die it's because you messed up, not because the game was made poorly. But the highest praise (aside from somehow making the gameplay an essential part of the story) I can give this game is the music, which is, put shortly, simply astonishingly good. Listening to the tracks by themselves you might not be too impressed with them, but contextually in the game they always add a lot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Celeste has got to be one of the most impactful games I've ever played. The gameplay is super fun, with a lot of challenge that never feels unfair. Many difficult games lead to genuine fury at the game, but that never happened whilst I played Celeste. Various mechanics are introduced throughout that come together beautifully towards the end, and the simplicity of the game's main controls lend themselves well to the challenge. The story is surprisingly emotional and has a really touching tale of self-growth and self-belief through the characters of Madeline and Badeline, with some charming comedy sprinkled throughout, aided by the character of Theo. Particularly, the gondola scene and the later scene which brings back the feather technique. It hit home really well and that technique is actually really useful in my real life. The music of the game is also astounding, with a beautiful and emotional soundtrack composed by Lena Raine. Everything in this game oozes charm and emotion, and it's one of my all-time favourites. In terms of gameplay this game hits it out of the park with modes for both veterans and newcomers alike with a full assist mode allowing you to make the game MUCH easier but it is completely optional. It is rarely short but has lots of extras like harder B and C sides collectable strawberries that contribute to the ending screen and just generally replyability with a Speedrun timer to try and beat your best times. My only complaint is and this may just be me using the analog stick instead of the dpad but when i tried to go diagonal for wavedashes especially it would often read other directions instead but it was probably just me. I played it on the XBOX One but i hear it runs just as good everywhere else with a solid frame rate that only ever hiccuped about twice through my 20ish hour playtime. 100% reccomend its now my 2nd favourite 2d platformer and in my top 10 favourite games of all time Expand

This game is so hard to get through, I caught myself uncountable times raging with the TV because I doesn't jump on the very right time, but this just makes the game more and more incredible. My best part is the feather scene, where Celeste is so anxious that she's almost lost her mind. It's a great and difficult game.

The story is quite enjoyable and have a deeper meaning. Visuals are surprisingly impressive to me. The game makes the most of these pixels. Sometimes you have to do too pixel-perfect jumps which is frustrating and(I played through about 70% of the game) Celeste takes some simple mechanics and develops them through the levels to maximum. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is possibly the most beautiful game I have ever experienced. I’ve learned patience from this game, I’ve learned to cope with the struggles of everyday life through this game. This is more than just a game to me but a therapy of sorts. The controls are simple yet fun, the characters are all unique and original, and most importantly of all, the game is just a great experience and gives such a feeling of empowerment after beating each chapter. By far the best game I’ve ever played and I seriously recommend this to anyone who struggles with ADD, ADHD, anxiety attacks, dysphoria, and many other mental problems that may get in the way of everyday life, it seriously helped me put everything into perspective and separate myself into my achievements and my flaws, just as Madeline does. Please play this game and take your time, don’t rush through and miss some things that may have a huge impact on you. Expand

Beautiful artstyle, great soundtrack and amazing but simple gameplay. These are the three elements of Celeste. If you are a fan of platformers, this is a must play. The only minus is the fact that you need to find and finish a few secret levels to go forward with the story.

This game is honestly incredible. The visuals look really **** great, the soundtrack is one of the best in gaming, and the story is really great as well. Only complaint is that the controls sometimes can get a bit wonky, sometimes I will hold the c-stick right and I will dash diagonally, **** like that. However it is still a really damn good game and I would highly reccomend.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don't know how to review games so im just gonna write this shortly. Celeste is a flawless game (from my perspective) i seriously didn't find anything i don't like about the game even tho i finished all chapters all b-sides, all c-sides and even did a speed run under 1 hour 30 min. If i had to say which chapter i hated the most it would definitely be chapter 5. Even tho this chapter is supposed not to be really enjoyable it doesn't make it better. I really liked the end of chapter 5 with the "fall" and how this games story just clicks together. In farewell, for me it felt like the story stopped going. Maybe its because i suck at this game and it took me like 2 hours to get some dialogue. Probably the best OST Ive ever heard in a video game. Celeste just gave me a feeling that no other game did. That feeling when at the end of chapter 7 you start climbing the last part of the mountain and then you start reaching the end and the music starts to fade out, that was just incredible game design. So here is my rating : OST - 10/10, Gameplay - 9/10 (Chapter 5 and some parts being really stressful), Story - 11/10, i don't get why so many people don't like the story. Overall 10/10. Expand

Celeste's message is incredible really allowing you to learn a lot from a video game. It lets you know that YOU can climb metaphorical mountains. Then there is its gameplay. Celeste's gameplay is beautiful. Madeline's movement is nice, swift and snappy, allowing you to do all sorts of stupid tricks. Then once you get your second dash, so much more movement happens. You can dash twice, after all. The only thing that I don't really enjoy about Celeste is its length. I beat the game in six hours. That's not a lot. Now I could (and will) go back and get every strawberry and all of that stuff, but that's not as fun as experiencing new obstacles every corner. So that's why I don't believe Celeste is a video game, Its a masterpiece. Expand

Celeste is undoubtedly a modern masterpiece. Its mix of reactionary platforming and problem solving is a breath of fresh air. Its Assist Mode is ahead of the curb in an industry constantly discussing accessibility. The way it masterfully weaves its emotional story about mental health with its brutal difficulty is astounding. Hours of extra content, one of the best soundtracks of all time and neat art is only the icing on the cake for this indie gem.
