    The shoot ’em up genre has been going for a long time now and there has been some game’s in this genre that have been absolutely brilliant and extremely addictive, unfortunately though Boiling Bolt doesn’t fall into this category. There are just too many problems that hold this game back and any positives are sadly short-lived and quickly forgotten. There are just too many problems that hold this game back and any positives are sadly short-lived and quickly forgotten. The problems start from the very beginning due to the technichal issues the game suffers with, and unfortunately some of these issues will put a lot of people off. This is a shame because the game does get some stuff right especially when it comes to the shooting mechanics, which remain fluid and responsive throughout. I also found the boss fights to be very well done and I must admit that I appreciated the creative side that went into them. Unfortunately though that’s pretty much where the positives end. The upgrades in the game are some of the worst I’ve ever come across and that was mainly down to them being completely useless, which is a problem because the game can be way too challenging at times so some help is desperately needed at times. The level design in the game doesn’t fare much better and all you mainly get are generic levels that completely lack in variety, which in turn makes the game become tedious quite quickly. They do have some decent variety when it comes to the enemies, but this is easily forgotten because of the lack of variety in other areas. The presentation side of the game is nothing to write home about and that’s mainly down to its bland design. Visually the game offers nothing memorable and the accompanying sound design does nothing to enhance your experience, which was a little disappointing. At the end of the day Boiling Bolt has entered a genre that has many classics at hand and if you don’t quite reach that standard or fall way behind that standard then you stick out like a sore thumb, which is unfortunately the case here. Don’t get me wrong it’s not the worst shoot ’em up I’ve ever played but it’s not even close to being the best shoot ’em up either, and when it’s all said and done I can’t recommend this game to you because there are much better game’s out there for you to play.… Expand

    I can’t fault the team at Persistant Studios for attempting something a little different with Boiling Bolt, but it does come up a bit too short to ever worry the big shmup guns.

    A brave Shoot'Em Up, defying for lovers of the genre but not so much attractive for beginners. His lack of levels gets compensated by the variety of game modes and the offline coop.

    The visuals are bright and have a nice style to them, the gameplay loop is fun and when things are going your way, it can give you a real adrenaline boost. A slow basic firing rate and some cheap lost lives can lead to frustration, especially in the later levels, but overall Boiling Bolt is a fun throwback to simpler times that is equally as challenging as it is annoying.
