    Presented in a great Saturday morning cartoon style, the Battletoad trio of Rash, Zitz, and Pimple have been trapped in a virtual reality hole, living out a life where they’ve been worshiped as heroes for the past 26 years. That gameplay variety has its drawbacks, though. While I loved the feeling of bouncing from one game genre to another, I found myself wishing there were more classic brawling levels. Beat-'em-up is the game's bread and butter, but comprises fewer than half of the levels. It's a much larger percentage of the actual gameplay time, though, as a fair number of minigame "levels" take just a minute or two. In the end Battletoads was a decent attempt at reviving the franchise. It's always difficult to keep fans and newcomers happy in a classic franchise such as this. It's most definitely worth at least a couple play throughs and I think there is enough here to recommend it in the end after all it is battle toads for your Xbox One. I think players will love (new comers) or love/hate (depending how fierce of a fan you truly are.    … Expand

    I don't gest it! Why make Battletoads if the new menagment clearly hate the franchise and loath fans? If it been called any other name - it would be okish game. Not the best, not the worst. Kind a in the middle for the genere. But if you are Battletoads fan, you will be personally attacked and mocked.     Its a great game to pass the time. Overall even when some part of the story is not near to perfect. The puzzles and mecánica works just fine. Great 8

    I wanted to really like this game but the fact is, it's just not that great. The controls are pretty snappy but the hitboxes of the enemies and the combo system just don't give the player enough feedback to be really enjoyable. The whole thing just seems kind of flat and uninteresting. Perhaps I would have a different opinion if I hadn't played Streets of Rage 4 before this. Battle ToadsI wanted to really like this game but the fact is, it's just not that great. More than 50 per cent of gamers do believe that it’s getting better but we need to do more than just try to tick a box. Games have a social responsibility. We’re responsible for a lot of screen time in people’s lives so to not hold yourself accountable for the impact games have on people’s lives is no longer an option.

    “Also, accuracy is not an excuse not to have women and people of colour in your game. It’s not wrong to have muscular men and hourglass women bu we need to represent our audience better and the people who are actually playing our games. It’s great to have NPCs that are body diverse but it’s better to have the same for a protagonist.”

    “To not hold yourself accountable for the impact games have on people’s lives is no longer an option.”

    She shared her tips for artists who want to overcome projecting their own ideals: “The best way to get better is to review your work, see where you are now and see where you want to be in the future. I review my work every year.”

    Reviewing her earlier work she realised there was a “not a lot of diversity in anything” and she needed to leave her comfort zone: “You need to push yourself because no one is going to do for you.”

    Limited design skills can also be a factor as you end up “reaffirming you own ideals by creating a default for yourself” and always creating the same body shape over and over. Once again you need to push yourself to go beyond this default.

    Finally there’s also a personal aspect in this, which seems to have been the trigger for Kyriakidou to start championing body diversity in her character design: “I realised I wasn’t even representing myself in my art and I found that very hurtful. I had internalised that what I looked like needed fixing or stylised in order for the imperfections to go away.”

    Among her tips for artists, she advised them to challenge their own biases by making researches on body types and find resources they can work from (one of them being ‘Olympics bodies’, as photographed by Howard Schatz for his Athlete book: you can see a few of these photos on this page).

    She also advised to create moodboards “to force yourself to do some research.” She highlighted that bodies don’t necessarily look the same depending on the culture as well, saying for instance that the ‘typical’ woman in Greece doesn’t look the same than the one in the UK – and neither does her body type.

    Character redesign exercises are also good practice: “Fan art is amazing – if you take a character that already exists and recreate it you can really understand the impact of their story on their body type,” and it allows you to practice different shapes.

    “Introduce body diversity to your personal work” as well, Kyriakidou recommended. “Draw from personal experiences and relationships and always review your work to avoid stereotypes. Weight is NOT a personality trait. No, big characters are not always funny.”    … Expand

    This game is absolutely atrocious!
    I won't waste my time telling you why. Just watch or play the last two acts and you'll understand. Not even the couch co-op could save it. Even the mini-games are dull as hell!

    Everything is either VERY unbalanced or VERY boring. PLEASE, do not waste your time in it! I BEG you!

    Battletoads is a stylish, grueling, flawed, but fun beat 'em up... one which is unfortunately buried under mounds and mounds of extremely mediocre alternate game modes. You're constantly just wishing for the bullethell/platforming/QTE sections to end so you can get back to the part of the game you actually want to play.

    This game is a game for kids that almost no one would have played if it wasn't at Gamepass. If you loved the original Battletoads, skip this because the spirit is not there. It's for kids, and it's short. And the art style is awful except for kids.

    Dissapointing. The artstyle is terrible and doesn't resemble the original Battletoads. It reminds me of an early 00's flash game. The story is boring and the voiceacting is cringey. Not a worthy successor.

    For players unfamiliar with the original: 9/10 is a good game.
    For players who played at least one of the original games - 4/10. The main complaint is a terrible visual style(good for children under 5 years old), reworked characters (the Dark Queen has become just disgusting), ugly levels.

It has meaningless puzzles that don't make any sens in the world or gameplay. The entire game reeks of game school graduate. Even the walking animations are extremely amateur. I don't see a single redeeming value here. Microsoft is prooving, once again, thatThis is not Battletoads in any way shape or form.     this game is a complete meh, the art style and animations are fine, the beat em up sections and the bike are okay (not excellent, just okay), but the rest is between mediocre and bad, this game has a little of all, but does nothing particularly well, there's too many mini-games than are simply bad or meh that ruin the game and pacing of this one, and the humor is also bad.

    The game presents funny jokes, but not. Sometimes the challege is boring, other times is to long and repetitive. It´s so frustranting. Lot of time wating this game and Battletoads is garbage.

    The perfect example of how you should not make a remake or revival of a game, it was much better forgotten, this installment is just a mockery of what Battletoads really is, I don't know if they hired the cartoonists of Uncle Grandpa or Clarence from cartoon network for this crap, avoid it at all costs.

    It's safe, boring, emasculated, and mediocre. What a waste of an IP. Little kids would probably appreciate the "humor" and art design, but they'll get bored with the repetitive gameplay almost immediately. This game is going to be completely forgotten in a year.

    Had no idea about this game coming out until I saw it on Gamepass so I thought I'd check it out having played it on the NES/Super Nintendo.

    This game is horrible. I hate the art style, I hate the voice acting, I hate the combat. This goes to show you can't make a straight up masculine beat em up game in 2020. It reeks of Nickelodeon/Disney teen humour. Please leave the classics alone.    Had no idea about this game coming out until I saw it on Gamepass so I thought I'd check it out having played it on the NES/Super Nintendo.

    It's the worst game i play this year. period, the combat is repetitive and boring, the enemies design looks like something a 5 year old child would draw, the humor is 6 hour of the game saying that the old fanbase are a bunch of morons, there are better games of the past out there, play SOR4 or Crash 4, forget this piece of garbage, the TOADS are dead, tks Microsoft

Direção artística horrível, infantil e lacradora , tornaram o game easy para que nutellas de hoje não chorem com a dificuldade que o game deveria ter . Lo mejor del juego es que bebe de Street of Rage y del estilo animado y hunorístico tipo Cartoon Network, hasta aquí lo bueno de mi review, el juego es extremadamente corto (en menos de 3 horas lo terminas), no tiene coop online, y se hace tremendamente repetitivo..... no era el regreso de la saga que se esperaba… Expand

    Booted up my Xbox one s to play one of my beloved franchises and finished this not only in 3 hours, but the cutscenes make up 1/3 of those 3 hours... So, 2 hours of real play and a bland story. Rare should've salt and peppered this game some more and keep it in the oven some more and more, but sadly not. It will be a forever horribly bad.

    Возвращение жаб ждал как ничего другого. Но то во что их превратили разработчики заставляет сожалеть о еще одном бездарном перезапуске и загубленной серии. Поучитесь у авторов Streets of Rage 4, как нужно делать продолжение.

The third act can be cut - a mediocre puzzle platformer for 7 year olds. The Beat Em Up in the game is just the beginning of the rest, goddamn it - a bunch of endless mini-games like flash crafts of the 2000s.     Battletoads felt like they were supposed to be kind of like the edgey counterparts to Ninja Turtles. The arcade cabinet had a bunch of blood and guts, the Queen always dressed like a hooker, the graphics were never nearly as bright and shiney as it was presented here.

    The graphics looks like modern day flash animation.     The graphics looks like modern day flash animation. And I get it, I am sure that people are probably tired of hearing folks talk about this, but jeez louise, the first thing I thought of was like phineas and ferb or my little pony.

    It just looks and feels like they made it as non offensive as possible. And I suppose I get that from a marketing standpoint, they'll be able to pull in a much wider demographic because of that. When you manage to get someone to play with in your house, there is no hitting each others... which was about 60% of the fun from the og.     the cartoonish graphics and soundtracks are fine and mini-games are fun but unfortunately, it has 2 big problems. (I recommend developers make a tv series instead of video games)

    1- It is too short ( I finished the game under 4 hours on Toad difficulty)
    2- no online co_op !!

    I feel like the gameplay kinda sucked, though. It never grabbed me, and I cant tell if it was from it being too complex or if it was just that I wasn't invested enough to enjoy it. The controls are straight up bad, especially on an Xbox controller. I got softlocked 5 times, 2 of those being in the last mountain-climb level. You have to restart the entire mission to un-softlock, you can't just return to the most recent checkpoint. That was extremely frustrating. I feel like it tried too hard to be a funny kid's cartoon, and didnt try much to be a classic beat-em-up game. "But hey, at least it's on gamepass." I dont like GP, so I shelled out the $20 for this. It took me 2hr 45min to beat, which is sadly 45 minutes outside of the refund period.    … Expand

    I don't like the new art-style. Old Toads are more brutal and I like it more.
    But beat 'em up gameplay is pretty nice.

    O jogo é bom e divertido quando vc joga com seus amigos, eu joguei em Coop e gostei bastante, mas duvido que seja a mesma coisa jogando sozinho esse jogo, o que pode não acontecer com outros jogos, a trilha é bem aleatória e não combina tanto com o ambiente, no mais é um jogo mediano.

    I loved Battletoads as a franchise, I had a blast with every game released and even games the toads cameoed in were all good games. Then this came along. The game looks like crap a two year old could have made and doesn’t play much better. Thanks for killing Battletoads for me.

    the style is nice. It stops there. This is the most repetitive **** I have ever played. 10 minutes in a vehicle in a long corridor. IT NEVER ENDS. Everything is filler. Cutscenes are meaningless after bashing your head in especially during that boat part. They should PAY people to play this. The game is literally insanity on every level

    Got bored of the game really quick and uninstalled after an hour, nothing but a sidescrolling game mashing buttons 24/7, now this would be a good game.... if it was released in the 90's, very disappointing and on top of that the humor in this game is cringy.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Battletoads (2020) can be best summarized by two words starting with the letter F, those words are "fun" and "frustrating".

    The games biggest strengths are its dialogue, character dynamic, art style and cut scenes. Cut scenes in this game are done very well, it feels like a cartoon show. Some of humor misses the mark and is a bit cringe, but most of it is actually pretty well done, and surprisingly mature/dark at times despite the game's art-style suggesting otherwise, such as characters using the middle-finger at other characters. Of all the characters I find the most entertaining besides the Battletoads and Dark Queen, are the main villains, the Topians Uto and Pia. The game also has some decent tunes, my favorite is the theme is played Battletoads escape from Lumberjacks and Gymnasts. In regards to actual gameplay, the beat em portions are pretty good with a fair challenge (I played on normal difficulty). The animations morphs in particular are attacks are very well done. I do take issue with taunt being mapped to right analog stick though, sometimes triggered a taunt by accident, leaving me vulnerable to attack. Should've been mapped elsewhere. The environments in which you fight are also well done, my personal favorite is abandoned space amusement park. One problem I have with beat-em-up section is they sometimes have stupid hack or puzzle sections to proceed to another combat area, which kinda suck. Unfortunately, while the game is beat'em up at the core, the game could've used more levels for beat'em up action, as a good portion of game isn't just standard beat'em up fair. While variety is good, some of alternative play-styles aren't always fun or have issues. Some of these are fun alternative game segments like the Battletoads mashing buttons to perform occupational jobs, shoot- em-ups in spaceships, riding Turbobikes, using a diplomat named Jeff as a sled, and fighting off cultists in an unorthodox manner are all fun. Other modes like rebooting your spaceship, which consist of fun minigames, is brought down by a very strict timer with random layout each time you try, make it difficult to complete to the point of frustration. The platform/puzzle sections are okay, but honestly I'd would've preferred if they had not been included. The escape sequence I'm not a fan of at all, very strict time wise, and lastly, dislike the gymnast minigames. In all game modes, the difficulty can sometimes spike very quickly, which can be quite annoying at times. Sometimes I think certain parts of the game are harder as the result of playing by myself, certain segments seem like they would be fairly easy with friends. Which by the way, this has no online co-op, only local, online co-op should've been in the game.

    Juggling genres is the series’ trademark and the latest game offers much larger variety in that aspect than any of its predecessor. Most of the genres were tackled well enough, but not all ideas are spot-on and almost every part of the game could be improved. It is the best Battletoads game to date though and it would’ve scored higher if it wasn’t for one frustrating and infuriating section towards the end of the campaign. [11/2020, p.55]
