Awesome Pea has bags charm and is lots of fun to play. PigeonDev haven’t re-invented the wheel, but what they have done is make a faithful and heartfelt tribute to an iconic era of gaming with quite possibly the cutest mascot around. For a fiver, you can’t really go wrong here.

The biggest challenge you’ll face here is trying to overcome its horrendous presentation. There’s a complete lack of distinction between the game’s foreground and its background, leading to heaps of cheap deaths as a result. What’s worse, there’s almost no depth and variation within. Instead, the game makes a nasty habit of constantly recycling its few dull ideas, over and over, throughout the entirety of play. Heed my advice, avoid.

I remember the retro gaming era very well because it featured games with unique style and it also featured games that were not only fun butI remember the retro gaming era very well because it featured games with unique style and it also featured games that were not only fun but challenging as well. Awesome Pea is a game cut from that same style and while some of the design choices haven’t aged well it’s still a very enjoyable game packed with lots of nostalgia. From the moment you start the game with retro vibes and the nostalgia presented, I admit that I enjoyed what both the visuals and sound design brought to the table. I will say though that even though I liked the visuals it can be difficult to distinguish where all the hazards are at times. The gameplay is as you would expect, a platformer where the main aim is to get from A to B and with a decent amount of levels for you to get to grips with you do get good value for your money. You’ll also be pleased to know that the controls hold up really well at all times and the difficulty never becomes too overbearing which does stop you from tossing your controller across the room like a wii-mote. The game doesn’t feature too many issues and if it had more variety and a bit more uniqueness in the graphics (color) then the issues would be even less. That being said Awesome Pea is an ok adventure despite its shortcomings and if you’re a fan of old-school retro fueled platforming games then I’m sure you’ll get just as much enjoyment as I did from this game. It's worth the price of admission all being said. Full Review »
