Technical problems aside, The Raven’s three chapters are charming and sincere, with a knack for breezy puzzles, punchy dialog, and memorable characters.

If you are willing to wade through the plentiful rough patches, you'll make it to an exciting cliffhanger and a promise for more in episode two.

The controls are so badly implemented, you feel like you're fighting with the game. [Feb 2014, p.87]

Well after thisThe first chapter in an episodic video game that puts you in charge of capturing a "master thief." Sound interesting right? Well after this first episode I won't be picking up the other two, and not because of how overly priced they are.

The thing with games like this is that they basically live or die by their writing. In the case of this game we get banal and boring dialog as well as lackluster characters. Conversations are a complete bore. I found myself skipping almost all dialog shortly after starting. I would have avoided talking to anyone altogether had it not been required to talk to them at certain times in order to progress and collect needed items.

The story itself had potential, but all the character interactions surrounding it are dull like you wouldn't believe. It's a shame because the game clearly puts an emphasis on getting to know these characters. They all have their own backstories to explore. However doing so just isn't worth it. Even worse are the main characters absolutely pointless observations about the case, characters, and random stuff around him. Things do get interesting for the story later when the episode puts you in charge on piecing together a crime, but the dialog never gets better.

As far as gameplay goes there are some great puzzles here. All of them have logical conclusions and can lead to some satisfying eureka moments. It's just a matter of collecting the needed materials and putting in all together in your head. Control issues do often get in the way though. Character movement is often awkward and this is one point and click game that could have used a better transition to consoles. Rather than having a cursor tied to the second analog stick like Telltale games do, you instead controls what the character looks at with it. This means you often have to be at a specific angle in order to target a specific item. Given the clumsy character movement controls it can occasionally lead to some light irritation.

There are also some light technical issues about. One of which prevented an achievement from unlocking. Very disappointing.

There are moments where the game shows some promise. The idea is intriguing, but the execution is far from satisfactory. It's all just a rather boring experience because the writing and characters never take off. A huge flaw for this type of game. All in all this first episode shows that this is game that no point & click fan should feel bad about skipping. There are plenty of better alternatives out there.

It's not a huge disaster. It has just some of these moments you really don't want. I'm not a fan of puzzle games and this game looks good...It's not a huge disaster.
