Is this the best kart racer this gen? Yep. More importantly is this is a collection of all things Sega. Sega has always been a step behind Nintendo and it is good to see Sega come out with a greatest hits type game along the lines of Fighters Megamix.

As for the game itself...no story, just racing. Everyone knows how the system works. You race other racers on tracks littered with weapons and speed pads. Sega through in a few time trials for good measure. However.....your car can turn into a boat to run on water of a plane / copter to fly when you run out of land. The boats are a bit floaty by design and the air vehicles feel natural with a bit of touchiness when you go up and down. The weapons are sadly a little on the boring side and actually hitting the target takes a bit of skill. The difficulty is well balanced however some of the later tracks are a tad easier than some of the earlier ones.
Speaking of the tracks they are the best looking tracks in any kart racer. Period. There is no argument to be made. It looks fantastic. It looks so good in fact that some tracks like the "Nights" course or the "Samba" track are so cluttered it gets a tad confusing. Also the track design seems to be either a tad to simple or a tad to complicated. Some are trail and error. Not a deal breaker but it needs to be mentioned. But they look great. Sega blue is everywhere and seeing games like Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, and Monkey Ball gets the nostalgia going.
Sadly on the Wii U I have not had a chance to dig into multiplayer because I can't get connected to anyone else. Plus the game is full of slowdown and glitches. I actually rented it from Redbox on the 360 and that version does not have the problems. So if you have the choice get the 360 version. Hopefully the Wii U gets a patch but thanks to Nintendo's ignorance I am already out of hard drive space. But I can't hate the game over Nintendo's mistakes. But the Wii U version gets the lower grade for coming out with problems.

Next to Mario Kart 8 the best kart racer of all time. I like the characters less and sometimes the graphics are too colourful but the track design is better - and the levels transform during the race. This is great. The mechanics and controls get a bit deeper than Mario Kart, what I like. And most of all: you can play the campaign together! Well done SEGA!

The tracks are amazing renditions of Sega games from the past, and I can tell you I wish these old games looked this good! Aircraft carriers, space ships, lots of variety in the levels. Lots of unlockables which are great at keeping you motivated to keep playing. 4-player splitscreen looks very good. My Favorite feature here is the fact that you can play the World Tour or Grand Prix single player modes in multiplayer. So, no need to play by yourself, you can play with the family and still progress through the "campaign." Also, unlockables and DLC from one profile are also available with all family profiles, this is not so on many games. I have not tried online multiplayer, but this game is a 10 in my book at doing what it does extremely well! Expand

All tracks feel a treat to drive through, with the tracks Transforming after each lap to take you into a different driving experience. With your kart transforming into a boat and plane, the transformation is seamless. Minor complaint is with the flying and boat racing. At times, with all that's going on in the game, it is not always clear where you are supposed to be flying and with driving in a boat, it generally feels as though you have limited to no control of the boat at times, with the waters movement proving to be erratic at times. Other than the aforementioned niggles, the general experience with Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a great one. A must have for any kart racing fans and Sega fans. Yes, it's not Mario Kart, but this is the best Kart racer that isn't a Mario Kart game and, I must be honest, I enjoyed Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed much more than I did Mario Kart 7. Expand

This is a great game. It's fast, the graphics re gorgeous, the controls are good, it's original, and each racer is different in their own respect. Also, plenty of game modes and difficulties add replay value to an already extremely fun game. The only downside is that the controls for the boats and planes can be a little off at times. Plus, there is potential for more DLC, Alex Kidd and maybe more!

This game is a mix of the first Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing game, as well as Mario Kart 7 & Need For Speed. It features all the great fun of a kart racing game, but features beautiful graphics & a more realistic racing game engine that resembles Need For Speed or Forza Motorsport. The controls are very realistic to how how think each vehicle transformation should play. The car sections play just as anyone would expect, the boat sections are great with waves & currents to make the sections funner & more challenging, and the flight sections play like a flight simulator (inverted up & down, etc). For SEGA fans, this game is sure to please you with an incredible roster of beloved Sonic & SEGA characters, as well as tracks that are based off of great levels that they've made into fun tracks to race on. The soundtrack for the game is made of mainly of remixes, but is still perfectly fitting & very catchy. This game is also like how video games used to be, packed with a bunch of amazing unlockable content you don't have to pay for but you really have to work hard to get, it's a very lengthy, but nonetheless, amazing game. No matter if you've been a SEGA fan for ages, or if you just picked up the game to have some fun, you'll love this game for sure, it is for sure one of the best racing games out there. Expand

Track design is mediocre at best but other times it feels such a let down and uninspiring. Music and sound effects are ear piercingly awful. Gone are the days of Sega's triumphant music composers and here we have some generic beats that don't reflect any nostalgia whatsoever. I don't want to reminded by stupid voice overs what part of the Menu I'm selecting, nor do I want to be told what lame projectiles or abilities I've driven over all the time. Yes ok, it has Vyse from Skies of Arcadia, and occasionally I had a few good laps and felt this is ok then it brings me back to the benchmark game: Mario Kart. No other 'toon racer will ever come close to matching the enjoyment of Nintendo's finest and this is a very dull and half-hearted attempt on a collection of Sega mascots killed in a blender. I used to like Sonic. I remember two years earlier (Grade 6) I wore a Sonic hat shaped like his quills to school and pretended me and my friends were Sonic characters, and eagerly awaited Sonic Generations, the one game I was looking forward to the most that year. But I've since changed. Only recently have I decided to stop playing Sonic. Now let's get into reviewing the actual game. It's a TRAINWRECK of a kart racer, a homage to retro Sega, a Sonic game and as a material object. I thought the worst was behind Sonic, and that the future for him looked brighter. Far from it. This is THE worst Sonic game ever made, and one of the worst games in history.
Let's start off small. The game is a sad and blatant cash grab. It's clearly ripping off Mario Kart 7 with its 'land, air and water' gimmick. Sadly there's no avoiding a comparison between the two games, and it won't be pretty. On one hand, MK7 was a polished and well-made kart racer (possibly the best in the series, even), wheras ASRT is broken, ugly and disgraceful. Oh yeah, you thought Sonic 06 was broken? This one has millions more glitches. MILLIONS. I couldn't play a single race without at least ten glitches. The collision detection dissapears for both objects and item boxes, the vehicle wouldn't transform at the right time (when I come to a body of water, it would stay in car mode, and my character drowned) and sometimes the position ranking doesn't even go up, meaning that you can stay in lead all throughout a race and come in last, all because the position ranking wouldn't move. The all-star moves are a joke. They are seriously downgraded from the first game, because now THEY DO NOTHING. I'm not even joking, they're just eye candy! As far as I'm concerned it's another glitch. I wouldn't be suprised at all. Split-screen multiplayer lags everywhere, making one short race take up to an hour! Online multiplaer is arguably even WORSE. The game was supposed to pay homage to Sega's glory days, back when they didn't suck, but they just ended up ruining all their franchises. I'd give this game a 1 out of 10 if the music was any decent, but it's godawful (enough to make Ke$ha's music seem like a masterpiece), so a 0 it is. One of the worst things ever created.

On the surface, it appears to be a Mario Kart clone, but has enough of its own character to set it apart, as well as a very different physics model. The game plays more like a hybrid of a kart racer and an actual racer, with additional segments of tracks dedicated to boat racing and aircraft racing (including inverted controls similar to a flight simulator). In addition to the obligatory grand prix, single race and time trial modes, the game includes a "world tour" mode, which creates a large amount of variety in gameplay styles. These include drifting trials, combat races, boost trials, and elimination rounds. All of this is done with a degree of polish rarely seen from Sega, the controls are tight, the environments colorful and detailed, and the music (consisting of DnB and breakbeat remixes of old Sega tunes) is outstanding and very fitting.

The game is not without its flaws. As one would expect from a Sega game, there are still a few minor glitches, but generally nothing more than a few graphical errors, and certainly nothing game breaking. In addition, a large portion of the game's content is locked at the start, and unlocking all of the racers, tracks, and racer mods is a very very time consuming process. However, this is in my opinion preferable to being given content as DLC. There is no shortage of content. By all measures this is a complete game, and even if content has to be unlocked, it's not unlocked through the use of your wallet.

This game is both a love letter to long-time Sega fans, as well as an excellent game in its own right. Whether you're a long-time Sega fan who misses the countless IPs that Sega has retired over the years, or somebody who enjoys fast paced kart racers, you owe it to yourself to give this one a try.

Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed is a Kart Racer with 20 different tracks, over 20 characters to unlock from various sega properties, exclusive characters depending which system youre playing on, and even some weird ones like Danica Patrick..
This game features a career mode which is where all of these characters and tracks will unlock.. but there is an online option as well as your standard tournament, time attack, and single race modes…
And youre also able to play split screen in all of these modes, including the career…
The career mode is the star of the show.. its challenging and addicting..
There are a variety of challenges and paths for you to go down, all earning you 1-3 stars for completing..
There are straight up races, theres drift challenges.. ring challenges, theres a mode where youre trying to take down a tank…. Theres my favorite elimination..
I havnt had this much fun in a kart racer in a while..
Before each race you chose your character you think will be best for the challenge youre about to take on and you go at it…
drifting and tracks for speed boosts, speed pads all over the place, constant offensive and defensive pick ups…
every race is so thrilling and you actually feel like skill matters here…
With this resurgence of arcade racers from indie teams lately.. its nice to go back and feel that balance where pickups shortcuts and timing actually matters… especially with the different stats and versions of characters… it doesn’t feel luck based that everyone is on an even playing field .. it feels like every player on the track is in their own world.. in their own race where their objective and your objective and strategy aren’t the same…
this is really highlighted in modes like elimination where not only are you racing for 1st place, but you only have 3 lives… you have to choose if youre going to risk taking a shortcut where its easy to fly off of the track, or are you going to hang in the back to deal damage, or maintain the lead trying to dodge it with a giant target on your back..
this was the most interesting mode to me and I wish the campaign had more of it..
and you heard me right earlier.. every character has different versions of themselves..
as you use a character you gain xp to level them up.. this will unlock new modded versions of them wit different stats…
so if you don’t like the base stats of your favorite character you can grind to level them up and choose a different version of them that is more your play style..
the difficulty you take on these challenges though actually do matter.. you cant just easy mode your way through the career mode..
you have to go for higher stars in modes you feel more confident in so that you can unlock alternate paths with more tracks as well as unlock characters and a bonus moderation…
this adds to the addictiveness of going back and mastering tracks or modes, increasing your star count..
And these tracks are all fun to race through.. especially with the whople transformed thing going on..
you don’t get to choose when to transform but as you race there will be sections where youll be plying through the air, or racing through the sea just to land back on land again.. and all 3 of these flow perfectly, none of them annoying.. I hate flying in games.. I hate controlling planes.. but it feels responsive and smooth here, you hardly notice that anything has changes…
My favorite thing this game does that I wish it did more of is actually tranfroming the map as your race it..
there are some really cool maps that the final lap is completely different than the first 2 as things start to fall and crumble..
I wish the played with this idea more, making every lap in every tracks different..
Sonic * All Stars racing again is probably the best Kart racer not on a Nintendo console and is a must play for fans of this genre
I give Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed an 8/10

The sequel to 2010's Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, the game's new feature is transforming vehicles, hence the game's title, with character's regular vehicles being able to transform into both aerial and aquatic ones. This can be done with transform ramps, and the player can activate transform boosts upon driving through these. This makes the game hectic, and with the wide range of items available, havok can erupt on the course in a matter of seconds - weapons include fireworks, ice blasts and an item called the hot rod which is very risky but is capable of giving you a massive boost of speed. Players can also go All-Star during races, which will give you a special animation, a tremendous speed boost, and the ability to decimate anyone in your path for a limited amount of time, but understandably the item that triggers this is quite rare. The courses are incredibly detailed and full of alternate routes which you can take, giving you a massive amount of exploration and choice. You can do this freely with your favourite characters, of which there is a wide variety, from Sonic the Hedgehog, to Dr. Eggman, to AiAi, to Vyse to Joe Musashi. You can level up any character, eventually being able to install mods on your vehicle, such as Speed and Acceleration, and your reward for doing this is maxing out your character's level and making them All-Star. There is also a very interesting and immersive Campaign mode in Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed, called World Tour, where you participate in events, collecting stars along the way. By doing this, you'll unlock new characters and medals/stickers to put on your driver's card, which can be viewed by other players online.
Overall, Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed is a sequel even better than the original, and a worthy competitor to Mario Kart 7 that often goes unnoticed. Available for pretty much every system out there, the fun blend of great courses, interesting characters and fun yet frustrating items make Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed a game you should definitely give a try, especially since it's not too pricey either.

Its a fun twist on the racing genre and Sonic was long overdue for a spot in the limelight. That is not to say to this is Sonic's first racing experience but its easily one of his best; it finally puts him on par with his rival. A ton of different characters and tracks along with superb vehicle handling make this is a top-notch racing game.

Game play is key to any racing game and this one is exceptionally smooth. This game is quite unique in the fact that you race across land, water, and in the sky. Thankfully, the vehicles handle smoothly across all three modes. The drifting is very satisfying and is quite easy once you get used to how it feels. You'll be drifting a lot as you'll get a boost that varies in strength depending on the length of your drift. If you need some assist there is an array of different power-ups at your disposal. These range from homing RC drones, to big fat blow-fish, to snow balls.

The content in this game, especially in the career mode, is quite astonishing. First and foremost almost everything can be played via couch co-op which is a rare find these days. The career will have you compete not only in races but various challenges such as races that require you to constantly drift or races that require you to meet checkpoints while avoiding traffic. The easier difficulties will make this game fairly accessible while the hard difficulties can be quite challenging. All the game modes will reward your character with experience points for finishing racing. These will unlock different mods you can use to change the stats on your vehicles.

Sonic is one of a dozen or so IPs represented in this game. There is a bunch of characters from the Sonic universe including Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Shadow. You'll find them racing along the likes of Beat ( Jet Set Radio), Ulala (Space Channel 5), Aiai (Super Monkey Ball), Amigo (Samba De Amigo), Ralph (Wreck it Ralph), and many more. You'll race across multiple tracks that represent just as many different games. The character models look just as good as the tracks which are brimming with personality. Some tracks feature each vehicle mode evenly while others focus one or two more than the others. Almost all the tracks change each lap giving each race an exciting cinematic feel.

Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed is a successful modern twist on the classic kart racer genre. The races are fast and frantic. You'll feel great as you pull off tight drifts or knock out opponents sneaking up behind you. There is a wonderful variety of much loved characters and locations featured in this game. Bring a friend over to enjoy the robust co-op that is accessible across almost the entire game. No matter how you play it or who you play as you're bound to have a great time playing this game.

Other than how to unlock characters and tracks, this one is superior to the previous one. Sometimes I can't decide if I like this one more than the first one, but I think this one beats it by a tiny bit. When it comes to gameplay, it's better, but when it comes to some other things, it's not as good as the first.

Sonic Transformed is the result of a series correcting everything that was wrong in the first game to right in the second game. With not only an improved game play engine, an innovative feature to change landscapes by racing in water and the air as well as the ground and tracks that change every lap, this is just the start of improved features from the previous game. Sonic Transformed once again features an ensemble of SEGA characters from different game universes with respective tracks for each character. The tracks are improved since last game, but also bring back tracks that were well received by the community from SEGA allstars racing. Sonic Transformed while having multiple glitches at launch, worked quickly to fix all track glitches so that the time attack leaderboard had more credibility. Sonic Transformed also reduced the effectiveness of the all star power up, making it more of a combative advantage rather than both speed and combat. The powerups are improved and more balanced, and now including a swarm powerup to target first place which was inspired by the shock from blur. This game has a much more competitive online multiplayer and karts feel balanced, even with various control patterns. You pick a speed class kart, you must take the turns different to that of handling and other classes. Overall buy Sonic Transformed, its one of the best Kart racers in recent memory and a vast improvement over its predecessor. Expand

It is a game with good speed, it has enough characters of sega, enough scenarios, bastentes items.
There are not many factors that differentiate it from other similar games, only that it is really fun and has improved a lot compared to previous deliveries.
One aspect that I liked was the system of acrobatics or turns that helps us get more turbo. and maybe it's still the best in this

It's nice to have a revamp of the first Sonic and Sega racing game join in on the racing category. I ended up getting the game ten days ago via Xbox Gold membership and it was an experience that I would definitely enjoy playing with friends, even if it causes as much rage as Mario Kart. Sad thing is, I have no other friends with the game. Pretty good though. I'd give it a rev.

I think that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is better than Mario Kart in every way. Every character might have different stats, but they all feel balanced, making this one of the more fair kart racing games. The gimmick of the game is being able to transform into a boat or a plane. Five words. Amazingly better than Mario Kart! This game is one of my favorites, and it’s fun to play! It is also very addictive and perfect for any SEGA fan! This is undeniably the BEST racing game of all time, and it includes some of my favorite characters from various SEGA media, including Pudding, Gum, Reala, Beat, Ulala, Amigo, AiAi, and Alex Kidd!

Now this is a racing game done right. Arcade fun times 1000. I find it’s fast and fun. One thing I didn’t ever like about the Mario kart series is the cheap CPU. Everyone that ever played Mario kart knows all about the blue shell or when your just at the finish line you get nailed by the computer and end up in last place..so basically you just wasted the whole race only to come in last even though you killed it all the way through..that ain’t fun at all..I found sonic racing gets the balance right when it comes to CPU difficulty. It’s tough but fair...Mario is tough and cheap but it’s still an awesome game...but everyone may say that multiplayer is where it’s at and I’d say they both are solid games...Hey it’s a kart game and comparisons will be made..I absolutely love the Mario kart series but when it comes to more fun and exciting and when I’m winning..I win...I deserve to win...not like Mario kart where if I’m winning the whole time..all it takes is the CPU to hit mega rubber banding and get all the power ups to kill me at the finish line. The gameplay is great in sonic allstars plus mega nostalgia..the soundtrack is awesome...it’s a great game and even though it’s older..it’s one of the few games that still lasts the test of time. Pick it up. Expand

Outstanding racing game with incredible music, charming locations and amazing presentation.
While some race tracks are better designed than others, you should pick this game if Mario Kart bored you out.

Sega making a car racing game is truly ambitious. And it's great with different characters and levels to help define the title itself. Definitely a must play.

In a series filled with divisive and disappointing games and c-list content, Sega actually managed to find at least one good game. There is only one negative to this game, and that's the flying controls when you first start up the game, but you can change them to be better, so it doesn't take away from the score of this masterpiece, which is a solid 10/10. It has a really good character roster,. It's cool that we got wreck it Ralph and Danica Patrick (a literal real life racer). The graphics are great, it's better than Mario Kart 8 deluxe and that's saying something and the amount of content in this game is phenomenal, there's so much to do. The tracks in this game are amazing, although I feel like they could have given us better retro tracks like Ocean ruin, Sandy drifts and Highway Zero from Sonic and Sega all stars racing, but the retro tracks we got aren't bad. Egg hanger is great though. Some of the tracks literally change as you progress through the laps and are so diverse and creative, and the music is fire as always in sonic games. This puts Mario Kart 7's water and gliding gimmick to shame. (Though MK7 is still a really good game that revolutionised the MK series at the time.) I mean, you can literally transform into a boat and a freaking plane, that's just mind-blowingly awesome! They should definitely use this gimmick again if we ever get a 4th kart racer in the series, and even better, it doesn't cost much and it was a bargain at launch. Well done Sega and sumo Digital for bringing us this masterpiece of a game. Expand

Blue skies, great control and a real challenge - Transformed has all the hallmarks of one of the classic Sega games it brilliantly celebrates. Still, the less devoted may find it too playful for a hardcore racer, or too hardcore for a playful one. [Issue#93, p.81]
