A really funny game. It doesn't matter that the physics are floppy, this game is a real humourous mish-mash of accidents, catastrophes and hilarity. It, however, lacks the objective. For a old game, its really fun.

For this being the first game I have played in the skate series, I never knew what to expect when I got the game, but as soon as I got the game, I was hooked, and I wouldn't want to stop playing, even though I did have problems with my Xbox live connection, it did effect my experience, but it shouldn't effect the score itself.

I am now waiting for skate 4 to come out, and hopefully it will.

Customization is another great factor, allowing you to make a whole clan of skaters at your disposal. The colors on the game are nice and bright, but don't go over the top. The music, to say the least, is EA's musical gameplay implementation at its best. The skating is smooth and easy to learn, and it is extremely fun to just wipe out and see how many bones you break.

Overall, skate 3 is not just the best entry in the skate franchise, but also one of the best games I've ever played. 10/10

It actually feels and looks like they dumped their entire graphics engine. The player movement is less realistic, particularly in bails, where the crashing bodies lack the articulation so nicely rendered in Skate 2. The option for a high- or low-camera angle is frustrating because the up high looks boring but down low you can hardly see what's in front of you. The multiplayer adds a lot of team activities, and I'd say that these are a necessary component of the new game. Large multiplayer reliance obviously has ups and downs though. For example, as this game gets older less people will be playing it online and it will be harder to find teammates to do the challenges. Online multiplayer is a great idea in the start, but as a game gets phased out or eventually replaced by Skate 4, it will become obsolete. One of the most annoying changes is the lack of shared-controller multiplayer. In Skate 1 and 2 you can pass a controller between players (or just play 4 times yourself). This was great for playing in groups greater in number than my controller stock. The nuts and bolts of the gameplay is far inferior in Skate 3. Skating isn't as much fun, it doesn't look as cool, and it has loads of glitchy moments. The expanded multiplayer modes and park editor don't make this version a worthy upgrade. Get Skate 2 instead. A few setbacks for me are the bails, it's annoying to see your guy go limp and face plant just because he messed up a kickflip on flat. Some of the tricks are pretty dicey to do with the sticks as well, bodyflips especially, that could just be me being a tard though. Skate 3 as a skateboarding game isn't enjoyable as you'd expect. It's boring, and at times feel extremely clunky. Plus, the game feels like it has no depth to it whatsoever.

I think I'll stick with the Tony Hawk's Underground titles.

I heard so many good things about Skate, read some reviews and decided to pick it up.

I shouldn't have, the controls are wonky, as is the camera (which seems to switch to inverted controls occasionally) and the game automatically moves to towards rails, making lip slides a pain to land.

1 push gives you a crawling speed that matched by a snail and saying that, most 'missions' start you very close to the piece to be skated making it hard to get the speed you want.

Vert skating is from what I've found almost impossible. You can't pump from what I know therefore making airs a rare occurrence. You can drop into bowls by getting off your board and pressing Y on the edge of the vert, but riding into one sends you flying down to flat.

The story is pretty bland, you start off I assume skating for some sponsor, bail hard and end up starting your own board company. It's your job to do these missions to have photos taken for magazines or billboards, videos taken for skate parts (which skip to you doing a trick not the whole line. I watched as the game loaded the next trick which was almost seamlessly right after the first).

There is no depth, no characters to like or hate, you just skate and do the missions for promo material.

The camera up high is fine, it's where I'm used to it from most 3rd person games, however the low variant of it is horrible. It's hard to line up where you're going. I should note; there is a fish-eye lens filter which you can turn on and off too, I assume this is for recording parts.

The controls are interesting for sure, but at times provide a frustrating experience. If you're coming from THPS it's going to be a shock and you'll find it hard to get used to them.

Overall I think the game is interesting, the sounds are great, music is good and landing a trick feels fantastic because of the realistic 'slamming' your board to the ground. The UI could use some work as the controls.

If you are a fan and played the Tony Hawk games, I would stay away from this as it's a huge shock and generally not as fun to play, especially if you skateboard yourself.

Skate 3 is likely the best skateboarding game ever made. At the time of its release it wasn't as appreciated as it is now due to being released less than a year after it's predecessor Skate 2 and not adding a vast amount to it. What it did however was make subtle tweaks to an already brilliant formula to really make the best skate game possible.

The game has aged incredibly well and its popularity in the world of streaming gaming channels actually caused EA to do a reprint of the game some 8 years after it's original release, this in the world of gaming is extremely rare, especially in this age of digital downloads. A large part of its popularity in streaming is the bailout ragdoll physics which can have some hilarious and always unique results. The game understands this appeal too, adding in a whole list of missions called "Hall of Meat" where the objective is to hurt your skater in a variety of creative and cringe inducing ways. This on its own is highly entertaining, gaining ridiculous levels of speed or height and then watching as your character lands with a sickening crunch of bones snapping before being presented with an x-ray view of what broke and where. It is great fun and a nice distraction from the actual skating part of the game.

The skating is quite brilliant as well. The animations and physics are top notch and still hold up today. The control scheme of flicking the sticks to do tricks is a perfect example of something that is easy to pick up yet challenging to master and they do a brilliant job of folding quite a lot of tricks into one stick. Graphically it hasn't aged badly at all and whilst it obviously pales in comparison to modern day graphics it still looks good enough and has a nice level of detail.

The game world is probably their best attempt out of the 3 games. It's quite vast and full of a mix of vert ramps and street style equipment. It is a world that invites you to become creative and invent your own lines and also one that allows the games brilliant missions to be diverse and entertaining throughout. There is a wide variety of gear and boards for your character to unlock and wear and they do a good job of using this stuff as the proverbial carrot to chase throughout the game. It's the sort of game you can lose hours in just fooling around, making your own lines up or scouting for a great stair set to gap or handrail to grind.

If there are any downsides it is that for me, not being much of a skater, the pro skaters voice acting is shaky at best and pretty much all of the dialogue is annoying, particularly the announcer during contests who is that irritating I found myself muting the tv during contests. The computer has a nasty habit of spawning you in dumb places if you bail during a race which makes racing basically become a "do a perfect run" type of deal if you want to win. Frustrating but not too terrible. Again its a subjective point but I found the music to be so bad I just turned it off and they didn't vary up the genres as much as they do in other games.

Besides that this was basically the perfect skate game. There isn't much to the story but who cares? As a sandbox for skating and/or breaking bones this is pretty much the best we ever got and with Skate 4 looking unlikely seeing as everybody is still buying Skate 3 this is probably the best we'll ever get.

In a recent EA sale on XBone I saw this including and checked the price out of curiousity and it was a mere £3.74. I got about 10 hours out of it completing the main "storyline" and honestly I'm going to leave it installed because it's a good pick up and play game. Great value for money nowadays and just a great game. A superb mix of simulation/realistic skating and wacky off the walls fun. It never really seems to get old and that goes a long way to explaining why, after all these years, people still play it.

This latest chapter improves on virtually every aspect of its near-flawless fundamentals, while delivering more modes, missions, and multiplayer components, proving to fans that its days of resting on its laurels aren't here quite yet.
  2. The true narrative of this game is the journey of slow, dogged, satisfying improvement that you'll travel as you work the ineffable rhythms of the board into your fingers.
  3. While this latest title doesn't take any huge risks, I would argue that's a good thing. Skate has always been one of those rare games where you can just aimlessly play with no goals or objectives.
