The original Mass Effect was an ambitious game; it set out to be this massive space drama and a blend between a role playing and an action game. It certainly accomplished this with a customizable character, lots of different powers to use and upgrade, tons of weapon mods, ample side missions (you can beat the game in twelve hours or you can spend thirty-five), and story-altering decisions (that carry on to the next two games). Basically, this rogue Spectre (a high-ranking official) named Saren is trying to take over the galaxy with an army of robots called Geth and it’s up to Commander Shepherd, you, to stop him. However, you learn that Saren isn’t the greatest threat to the galaxy. The combat is quite inventive, a blend between action and strategy, and the story and characters really shine through. Texture pop-ins and whatnot are rampant, combat can be a little unintuitive, and the Mako parts aren't perfect by any means but Mass Effect is a great start to a fantastic series (I'd say it's an 8.7 or 8.8). A fun, excellent game that you can play over and over again with a different story every time. I very much recommend this for sci-fi fans and RPG fans. What mass effect does best is that it combines a captivating story with great action and combat and turns it into your hands to let you decide the way you want to play.

I'm embarrassed that it took me three hours to figure that out but proud that I dedicated time in order to overcome my misunderstanding and complete the game. Once I understood the game, I absolutely loved it (I didn't know you could upgrade and customize the characters, so I was playing with entry-level armor and damage for the first 25% of the campaign...it was unbelievably frustrating and once I did figure that out, I was mowing down enemies and having a lot more fun. I'm going to hate Dark Souls, I guess). With an open-minded story, beautiful graphics that didn't feel 10 years old, gameplay that offers so much fun, and exploration that can keep you busy for dozens of hours, Mass Effect is a must-play for anybody who loves storytelling in general. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mass Effect doesn't have great gameplay. The graphics and general feel of an AAA game may not be there. But it still has been an amazing success in terms of critical acclaim. Why?

Mass Effect is as a game not as good as 2 and 3 in my personal opinion, as they are my favorite games of all time. In the things that it does well, it does amazingly. The characters, the plot, the real feeling...
The plot has a few minor flaws, that are a result of making a certain situation possible (eg. Sovereign attacking the Citadel), but all of them are made in a slick fashion, therefore meaning that the situation played out well in terms of gameplay and twists. Although some (Sovereign almost exploding because a creature that it indoctrinated got destroyed) can really make the impression of a threat disappear.
Characters are well built and the voice acting is really good, especially with Jennifer Hale. Different personalities and stories, like Garrus and Ashley, are very clear, and at the same time they relate. The only slight problem is that because of the unclear progressing of the plot makes the arising feelings feel more bland in the player.

Gameplaywise, there are a few tweaks here and there. Combat is pretty inconsistent, and mowing in general is stiff, but still manages to feel fun. The Mako is probably one of the most controversial thing in the whole game. The concept of exploring is exciting, but in reality falls flat because of the Mako's controls and movement.

The technical execution is the thing that makes Mass Effect fall short of the other games. The graphics aren't too bad, although they fall short of 07 games like Crysis and Portal. There are a lot of glitches etc etc. I think the visuals and noises are foggy. Bioware had some trouble doing the game, and you'll see it

Overall Mass Effect is a straight 10/10 with the plot and characters, and an 3/10 without them. So uh... 9 I guess? ( PS. It would be a 10 without the Mako)

For me it was the very first RPG in which decisions counted, and I have to say it couldn't be better. The relations with other characters were very worked, making those secondary characters very interesting.

And, yes, even I thought to myself how awesome it would be if they could make a game with a story-line that good with gameplay as fun as a Halo game. Ironically, as Bioware has tried to push more towards action, real-time based combat gameplay, in my opinion their games have gotten less fun. Critics raved about Jade Empire's combat, but I thought it was terrible. I got to where I dreaded combat, as all it ended up being was ridiculous button-mashing for the most part, and seemed like a total waste of time which detracted from the top-notch story telling. Same thing here. They tried to make it an action oriented third person shooter, but the combat just sucks. It's too hard to control to be fun. Likewise, the driving levels aren't fun either. Luckily, the bulk of the game is still the story, and though it didn't come close to reaching the bar set by KOTOR, in my opinion, the story was still decent enough. Midway through the game, I turned combat on to the easiest setting, and I enjoyed it a lot more after that, as combat was less frustrating and took less time away from the plot. Expand

Mass Effect has a great story and intriguing gameplay. If you liked the KOTOR series, you will like Mass Effect. The game has a ton of dialogue options and was generally fun to play. However, it ran into the Assassin's Creed problem with the side missions. They were extremely repetitive and I eventually gave up on those that didn't involve shooting something (I mean really, who wan't to be a space geologist?). The action of the game has potential but needs some minor tweaking. First, you have abilities, but need to pause combat to effectively queue them. I don't like this. In KOTOR, you could at least queue multiple actions in secession. In Mass Effect, you have only one hot button that can be mapped to an ability. As a result, you end up playing most of the game forgetting to use your abilities. They simply need a queue of abilities you can set and trigger without pausing combat. Still, overall an improvement over the sit and watch of KOTOR. At least I now get to aim at things. The graphics are good, but not as solid as current games. There's some definite boxiness especially in the "ahem" climax. I put 30 hours in completing the game the first time around diligently trying to complete all of the side quests before giving up on the more boring ones. This leads me the only other flaw of the game. In the KOTOR series (btw, I know they aren't the same game, but they are very close and KOTOR is a good point of reference), it was fun to play through both the light and dark side aspects of the game. It would alter major plot lines and end the game differently. I realize this can be hard to do for story continuity's sake, but there is NO value in playing Mass Effect through a second time. Don't waste your time. Oh, I guess I lied, there was 1 other flaw. Once you get the Spectre Gear, all other weapons become irrelevant. Getting new weapons was one of my favorite parts of the game until this hit. So, overall, very worth a $14.99 purchase for a game I spent about 50 hours on. Much more rewarding to put 30 hours into this game than 10 into Fable 2. Buy it now that it's cheap and if they fix these minor issues for Mass Effect 2, it will be solid as well. One last thing, the Codex was over-done in my opinion. I stopped reading the Codex very early into the game. It's great to have so much background info, but not very much of it was relevant to the point that I actually cared to read it. Put that stuff in a strategy guide or book. Expand

It is difficult to express in writing just how good the role-playing/plot element is: my usually indifferent housemate said it's like watching a sci-fi series, and he was annoyed to miss out on plot twists when he was out of the house!

    Some good comparisons:
The Darkness--Mass Effect's voice acting is as good as The Darkness, and even more impressive given the latter's size. I watched a friend play through the introductory mission after I did it and was surprised at the extra (and unnecessary) conversations that he discovered.
Knights of the Old Republic--Mass Effect is less linear than KOTOR, but its inventory is still rather clunky and unwieldy like its predecessor.

The game has a steep learning curve with very few tutorials, and some rather odd design decisions (a needlessly complex and unintuitive system for equipment, especially for fitting upgrades--if they had scrapped upgrades overall the game would have been the better for it, I think). However, after an hour or two it all made sense. The niggles raised in the reviews are valid, but it's still worthy of a lengthy play. Just don't expect as much action as Halo or Oblivion!

The biggest disappointment is the combat mechanic where the cover and duck system can be frustrating because it's not intuitive or accurate. Also, overly complex menus with no real explanation of functionality or benefit to the gamer can jar. Areas for improvement include making the ship, the Normandy, more of a living-breathing vessel with more interesting interaction between the crew and the ship itself. Expand

Mass Effect is a story telling masterpiece. I have never been so involved and emotionally attached to a game with a story this amazing and epic. Looking back at it now, I would've given it a 10 when I first completed it but its been 4 years and I have to admit it hasn't age that well by game play standards. When playing it now, my big complains are its overly padded RPG elements, slow graphics and lagged out combat which thankfully have been improved in Mass Effect 2, which is one of my all time favourite games of the modern era. Those aside, it is still a good game and that's thanks to its amazing and varied story telling, interesting characters, tons of variety and a huge galaxy to explore. When I first completed the game, it became my personal gaming experiment and see what kind of things would I find differently if I play it differently entirely. Because of its immense replay value, I have lost count of how many times I replayed the story over and over again. Mass Effect holds a special place in my heart because it was the beginning of one of my favourite gaming franchises ever and I hope that Mass Effect 3 will be another 'greatest' in my list. Expand

For example, why Bioware decided to go with an infinite ammo mechnic is beyond me and the first few hours are incredibly stagnant for a game that eventually ends up being a phenomenal experience. There is easily 50+ hours worth of entertainment here but it's buried under mediocre controls and a weapon system that leaves something to be desired. Where Mass Effect truly shines is it's story. The player choice implemented invery action is a wonderful change of pace that sets Mass Effect apart from every other 3rd person shooter. After the first few hours the story picks up and goes to places that no man has gone before. It takes the best of the sci-fi genre from film and television (e.g. Star Trek's lens flares and strange high pitch soundtrack that creeps you out in that deep space kinda way) and sprays on a shiny new coat of paint and performs it like a true epic, something on par with Greek tales of heroes and side-quests. It's not overplayed, it's not pretentious. It's entertaining and meaningful at once. I played it during a period of convalescence because otherwise I wouldn't have had the patience. This is due to the inability of Commander Shepard to run, preferring a light jog instead. Match this character flaw with the future's architectural fetish for LARGE, open spaces and you have a test of patience. The HUD is unnecessary. All the information could be conveyed through character animation and in-world effects or placed in the Menu. The radar is cheap, the "target everything" reticule is distracting, and the upper title bar is insulting. If I can still remember people from high school I can remember characters in a game. The human brain is incredible. Mechanics feel like a group of RPG nerds were put to the test of building a shooter to get more people to play their nerd game. It works. I played it. But I wasn't impressed. Targeting is floaty and unsatisfying. There's also the obligatory grinding (ughh) in the form of traveling to unknown planets and bouncing around in a rover that is delightfully hard to roll.

None of these factors take away from the greatness of Bioware's achievement with this game. However they do ruin my wish to replay it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow, where to begin? This game is great, don't listen to the critics that gave this game a low score, they obviously don't have the brainpower to make galaxy saving decisions. Even though it is my least favorite Mass Effect game, its still a great game. The main antagonist(s) are very intimidating an the game really makes you hate them so that when you finally fight them, it feels all the more satisfying to finally take them down. The game really makes you feel for your squadmates and crew members, and if you let them die, you feel bad about it! Not many games can do that, Bioware does a great job with character development. Now the reason it got an 8, the glitches, good God they are everywhere, I would get stuck in almost every level of the game and I would have to turn off my console and restart from where I was last, it was a constant annoyance, the combat was fun and the graphics were average compared to the rest of the series. Very fun game, and a great kickstart to the Mass Effect series. Expand

I found the game overall enjoyable. It was slow, and absurdly hard at random sometimes but I found the free roaming aspect in a shooter based rpg to be extremely fun. The story is also well written, so if you like your movie games jump on this one. There is also TONS of entertaining lore and a quite convincing environment for the future. They even go so far as to explain the futuristic tech.

Introducing a fully-voiced protagonist, the customisable Commander Shepard, in an interactive story that offers choice and consequence, with a cast of memorable aliens and exotic locations. The story is a top notch space chase after the rogue alien Saren, and his mysterious allies from beyond memory, in a style that is a bit like James Bond meets Captain Kirk. Overall the presentation is impressive. Weaker, however, is some of the actual game mechanics. Trying to move on from the somewhat tired formula of behind the scenes dice-rolls for combat, BioWare have put in a (not-quite) real time shooter mechanic, which while effective in gameplay terms, seems limited and unsophisticated in comparison with more dedicated shooter games. Also, the attempt to add vehicle exploration sections does not quite work, with an ungainly Mako APC roving about fairly bland barren moonscapes ending up at one of the same 3 repeated locations. However, the ambition should be applauded, and while Mass Effect does not quite nail it in terms of action gameplay, it more than makes up for it in terms of roleplaying narrative and style, and tantalisingly allows players to migrate their saves into its follow up games, something that has since proved to work rather well (in Mass Effect 2).It is quite a bold idea to produce a grand story arc over a trilogy of games and allowing players to fully customise that experience, and Mass Effect gets the endeavour off to a solid start. You will start to care about the characters you find out through your adventure and feel attached to them, emotionally. It' story is also well done, something unlike i have ever seen. This game takes a lot of time to get used. The combat is a bit awkward, the cover system isn't any better. The story and dialogue are beyond that of any game of its time. There's an enormous and imerssive universe to take part in. Once you're in, it's hard to get out. It all started with Mass Effect, which includes the most customization of any of the games in the series however it also includes the most flawed gameplay. The characters and the interesting sci-fi universe are the best part of this game. While the story itself is nothing new, the voice acting is superb and you’ll find that the best moments in this game are when you are chatting with a friend rather than duking it out on the battlefield. In fact, I’m going to go so far as to say the combat is boring and uninteresting.

Therefore it’s such a shame that the battlefield is where you’ll spend a majority of the game It isn’t that the combat is broken- it is just boring. There is nothing new to it. But that isn’t even the worst part of the combat- the biggest flaw here is the autosave. You’ll often play for 30 minutes and then die and have to go all the way back to the beginning. You’ll have to learn to save on your own but even then if an enemy is remotely nearby you can’t save. This means you may have to go through the same 30 minutes to an hour of boring combat multiple times so you can progress the story. The only reason I trudged through the missions was so I could get back to the ship and advance my relationships with the other characters and learn about their histories and backstories.

Not only does it have boring combat, but it has these broken and horrendous driving moments using a vehicle called the Mako which haunts me in my dreams to this day. So then, how could I give this game an 8.5 if I have all these complaints? Honestly, as I mentioned earlier, it is the characters that make this game. You play as Commander Shepard, a character whom you shape. Shepard can be a boy or girl, black or white, blonde or brown (or any other hair color) and on and on. There is no canon Shepard and you can play as him/her on a good (paragon), bad (renegade), or neutral path. Or you could just go crazy and pick whatever options you want. There is no right playthrough however I’d recommend deciding on whatever you would do/ whatever you think is right for your first playthrough.

You can choose how to advance Shepard’s skills as well as his class, so its up to you whether you want him to be a charismatic leader or a violent over-powered man. This is something which was unfortunately dumbed down in the sequels and is another way that this game immerses you in. You can also upgrade your squad-mates skills but this is optional.

Mass Effect is one of the best games I have ever played, which feels so unusual for me to say considering I found the actual gameplay itself boring. It looks great despite being a few years old and has brought the RPG genre the attention it deserves. Everyone will experience this game in a different way and walk out with a story to tell, and as long as you are patient enough to make it through the monotonous combat sequences then you are in for a real treat.

    Full score: 8.5/10

    NOTA: 8.5/10 (Muy bueno)

If you are a fan of a galactic theme like star trek or star wars like myself, this game suprisingly delivers. It could still compete even to todays standard but its far from perfect for a reason this game is too old and for remasters, there will be some aspects of the game that is impossible to update. And this is the case for mass effect 1. The inteface is outdated, the overall gunplay is clunky and its progression system is not as appreciatable. These could only be change on a remake version and thats completely fine. Overall, it is still a unique and a must play even today. Remaster : 10/10

By no means is the story in this game weak. I just find it the weakest in the trilogy. Where Mass Effect and games like it get it right is the immersion it creates for the player. When I first picked up my controller and delved into the story I found copious amounts of codex and journal entries that I would read to flesh out my understanding of this games Lore. This isn't playing a game. This is playing a movie. The cut scenes are moving, the side quests and characters are loveable. They can die in game if you aren't careful which came at as a surprise in my first playthrough of many. The side missions carry some weight to the resolution of the story. When a game offers you extra reading, most of the times it is sub par or just filler, however Bioware just got it right with Mass Effect. The ending to the game felt like a nice pay-off and I wont spoil it, however I did find it was quite rushed after the second act.
    Gameplay 2.5/3
Now dated yes, but at the time Biowares stop start and power/combo mechanics were new and fun to the genre. Yes it was a shooter, but it had RTS elements in a way which allowed you to pause the battle, change loadouts and combo up powers with other squad mates to unleash havoc. It was entertaining exploring which combos worked best and because of my love for each companion, I used so many different ones in every play though. The gun play was clunky but carried a certain feel to it that didn't annoy you when you played due to the other game systems. I played this game on its hardest difficulty and found it to be challenging but not to the point of frustration. It has a great balance of cover fire and guns blazing combat for anyone.
    Sound/Music 2/2
The Mass Effect series has some of the best in game music and background music in a game to date. The eeriness of the unknown galaxy is made evident through synth/organ and drum tracks when in major cities that almost become a character themselves. The voice acting is second to none. Making the characters even more loveable. Guns sound great for the time of release. Giving them punchy weight when firing.
    Art Design/Visuals 1.5/2
Character models have some glitches and some are generic however not game breaking like a Bethesda game. Great environments that are unique and alien. Guns and armour look great as well as the cities. The team does a great job at creating a new world to explore. HUD is good and simple and the map system is easy to use.

My final verdict is 8.5/10. This is a strong start to what will be an amazing series. This series is a must for any RPG fan and would highly recommend to anyone who wants a Sci-Fi movie experience but in video-game form. You're looking at 50-60 hours of content by playing the main storyline and doing all the companion missions. 60+ for those completionists per play through.

Hasn’t aged as well as the rest of the series but it still holds up remarkably. Story is phenomenal, characters are all great (except Ashley) and I still enjoy playing the game even after beating it like 7 times at this point. Can’t wait for the trilogy remaster!

Fun to play with plenty of side missions to keep you entertained between main progression. A massive nostalgia hit and enjoyed playing it just as much if not more than when I was in my early teens playing it.

Personally, i like this game. But a few things let the game down. FPS should be added in to this game that would make the game better. There are more but overall this game is awesome. Ha! Hehe love the "romantic" cutscenes.

The character powers aren't really a good alternative to combat weapons, and strategy isn't necessary at all during all the game. Graphics are good, but the texture popping make scenarios and menus really strange. The worst of all: The game's length is SO below of what I expected ( Come on, it's supposed to be Oblivion on space, don't give me only 15 hours of gameplay).

The gameplay (if it can be called that) is like repulsive icing on an otherwise great cake... The story and characters etc. are great, no complaints there. But the game fails at being an FPS (loved the thin hallways crammed with myself and 2 mentally challenged AI characters...nice) and it fails to be an action-RPG (or whatever it was going for) BECAUSE it failed dismally at implementing decent fighting mechinics, fps or not (No, I'm not a hardcore FPS player expecting this to be better than halo, half life 2 or insert good fps name here). Then there's the awful frame rate but I don't want to go there. I still WANT to like this game.... I just can't. I'm going to go read the book now and hope they release a movie based on it. Expand

A great story and presentation but the combat is winky, the AI is braindead and the planet side mission when you drive "mako" vehicle around are all big faults that detract from the fun. The story is fun to see it through but I'm not sure the game is worth more than a 7 or 8 score.

If you are looking for a story to watch...err play then this game is for you. The story is decent but everything else is lacking. The controls are very sluggish and the ui is horrid at best. The game is a chore to play and feels more like a punishment just to see what happens next. I do not recommend this game to anyone who prefers gameplay over story. This game is not fun.

Possible customization choices with your character and your squad members is also surprisingly diverse. Would you like to have an additional scope on your rifle with acid bullets attached with a booster that can greatly increase damage and armor protection? Well now its possible. Mass Effect is so very successful in many ways but it sadly falls short in other things. This game is one of the most unpolished games I have ever played. Frame rate is unbelievably low and the game will lag as soon as there are more than two or three enemies on the screen. Driving controls are bad, to be simply put. It is difficult to even drive around a corner at times. Auto save areas are extremely rare and if you die, you will often have to start back at the beginning of the mission. There are glitches galore in some areas and I find it hard to understand that Bioware did not notice any of these issues. Character expressions and facial features look awkward during conversations, to say the least. However, many of things probably couldn't have been helped seeing as how it was made during 2007. This game is changing the way we play video games and everyone needs to play the trilogy for a truly unique experience. Expand

Very impressive graphics, and nice gameplay sequence. All in all, it is a very deep rpg game, but with some of the same glitches that had occured in the previous game ( and some more as well). However, personally it doesn't live up to the hype that KOTOR created. I still believe that Mass effect 2 or 3 might succeed in where this one failed!!
