The gunplay is enjoyable, but the characters are mostly science fiction knockoffs or copy and pasted versions of first games characters. The entire thing is mediocre from start to finish and the writing is downright bad. It was a pretty strange experience.

The best mass effect game and it’s not even close. It’s hard for a story to really grip me and have me hooked the whole time but this one did. The characters were all spectacular and the excellent writing made me care about them all so much. This is a must play.

Perfect! One of a very few games that deserves a 10, but Shep and crew in Mass 2 well deserves it. Mass Effect 2 take a huge leap from 1 and this is the space RPG of a lifetime. Bioware were at their best with Mass 2. Definitely one of my favorite games ever!

Amazing characters but average story unfortunately. Could have spent the time setting up ME3 and used the exact same structure that makes the game so good. Imagine if Shepard had found the plans for The Crucible at the end of the Suicide Mission?
    But still a fantastic game.

One of the most, if not the most inmersive games of all time, the history that this trilogy of games provides to the players is as good as the best Tv series of all time, every decision you make counts and when you reach to the final part of the game, you are going to think over and over what you are going to decide because you love the characters of the game and you take it seriously. One of the most, if not the most inmersive games of all time, the history that this trilogy of games provides to the players is as good as the best Tv series of all time, every decision you make counts and when you reach to the final part of the game, you are going to think over and over what you are going to decide because you love the characters of the game and you take it seriously.
The main quest are awesome, but the secondary quests which i recommend doing, are also awesome, you know that you do them with a purpouse and that they matter to the game.
I cannot say more things of this game because you have tou play it to see how Bioware can create masterpieces like this.

Mass Effect has become one of the most iconic franchises in the growing field of gaming, and it's easy to see why: it feels like a franchise that's always been there and it has a self-constructed history that we buy, just like the worlds of Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who. However, Mass Effect 2 is debate-ably more ambitious than those franchises combined. However, Mass Effect 2 is debate-ably more ambitious than those franchises combined. And dare I say it: Mass Effect leaves the Halo franchise for dead (but that's just my opinion).

This game is one of the most phenomenal experiences I've ever seen play out before my eyes, and I'm happily replaying it now. The whole series is immersive, deep in character development and freedom of player-choice: I can't fault this game if I tried. It's gorgeous, fun, exciting, and it's got an engrossing story that can take you on so many side-quests that are necessary to your choices as the player.

The characters are three-dimensional, graphically and figuratively speaking, and they don't bore you; they compliment the world of Mass Effect even more with their presence. No character is a carbon copy of the other; they're all their own persons, something that a lot of developers wish they could say; but most cannot.

Mass Effect 2 is a masterpiece of the video game medium and I think it's even suitable for non-gamers who want to try something new in the world of sci-fi.

One of my most beloved Sci-Fi RPG's I've ever played, I recommend it, the game has some seriously good RPG mechanics that I've seen in a game and the Universe actually feels like a universe, you attach yourself to the crew and feel devastated if you lose any of them in your ending. I love the concept of building up to one final point and having almost every decision you've made up to it come into play. story

The narration of the story is very round and starts right away with a loud bang. In the very first round you just think: "What are you doing to us here". In the course of the game, the story is spun and told in a very exciting way, which then culminates in the last mission.

The characters, regardless of whether they are new or old, get a lot of substance through their own loyalty missions and many well-written dialogues and you develop or develop a strong bond with the individual characters.

The threat from the collectors, and therefore in the background from the reaper, with the harbinger as a spearhead is very well thought out and clever and the danger grows more and more as the game progresses.

    Gameplay

Mass Effect 2 has seen some gameplay improvements which make the game feel more dynamic (reloading and ammo). It has become an action-packed cover game with very good-sounding weapon sounds. In general, the music is again very atmospheric and appropriate. There are many missions that don't seem trivial, but have hands and feet and the resource gameplay has been made more pleasant than in Part 1. Only I would have liked more role-play, especially the skill trees are very rudimentary and offer no opportunity for experimentation.

    Graphics / atmosphere

You just get more of the very strong staging, the very atmospheric sci-fi setting and the picturesque music. In the Legendary Edition, everything is polished again to a high gloss.

    Conclusion

For me the best Mass Effect 10/10 stars!
The DLC are ABSOLUTELY recommended, outstanding.

The best entry of an unforgettable sci-fi trilogy and in my book, the finest game BioWare has ever made. The plot is less substantial than in other entries, but what really stand out are the characters and the experience of being in command of the Normandy. The strongest experience in the series for me. The companions in this game are so well written, that for me they trump any party experience in any game I've played to date. Characters like Jack, the wayward biotic who was experimented on and tortured for years or Solus the stuttering scientist with dark secrets. There are no shortage of surprises, and changing story arks depending on your decisions made in game. The ending mission for me is the perfect ending to any video game. The choices you've made and the friendships built dictate who lives and who dies in your party as does the decisions you make during the ending cut scenes. I don't want to spoil the experience so just go and play it. Immerse yourself and do all of the content because it isn't filler. It is all worth it.
    Gameplay 2.5/3
Once again Mass Effect 2's combat system is fun and quirky with its pseudo RTS system that Bioware have used in their Dragon Age games as well. A few QOL changes from one with a more fleshed out customisation system. Weapons feel great. The exploration system is fun, however the mining can get a bit repetitive and mind numbing at times. I did prefer the system they had in ME1 with the rover and mining/traversing the planet.
    Sound/Music 2/2
As per my ME1 review, Bioware have created another character with the music in this game. The feeling you get going through abandoned labs, the eeriness exploring through space with the synth and electro drumkit give you a real sense of being in another world. The voice acting is once again 10/10 with every character showing emotion and don't fall flat ever.
    Visuals/Art Design 2/2
Absolutely for its time revolutionary. The textures on the ships, the layouts of the planets, the facial expressions. This fixes the issues with ME1 and creates one of the best looking games and will forever be timeless. Guns look great, the explosions and the biotic powers are mesmerizing. The Art team really did such an amazing job.

This game is a masterpiece with my final verdict being a 9.5/10. There is 55-65 hours in a playthrough that does all the main missions and side companion quests. and 65+ for those completionists. This is a must play game in the series and one of the strongest games of its generation.

I was absolutely hooked (no apologies to my ex lol) and even though it took me 18 hours to beat the campaign, I thought the ending was only the end of the second act. To be completely honest, I was amazed at the ending while playing but once it ended, I was shocked that there wasn't more. It definitely leads into the possibility of a sequel which detracts from the finality of this ending but doesn't disappoint as far as gameplay or enjoyment are concerned. I suppose that I was slightly confused that MY decisions as a gamer could dictate whether or not one of my allies made it to the end (was new to RPG's when I got into this series, aside from Skyrim); that element does offer an unreal amount of replayability and truly makes me want to go through it again to see what other outcomes are possible. And this game offers teamwork like none other, I held my supporting characters close to my heart, maybe even closer than the main protagonist. Amazing game. Best one of the series by far. You really care about all the characters. Flying to different galaxies and exploring planets. Fighting aliens. What more do you need! And what an ending.
Bought all the DLC and they were just as fun.

My favorite game. I tattooed myself I love this game so much. The universe is rich and so full of detail. The characters are deep and thoughtful. Garrus is one of my favorite characters in any sci-fi universe. The game play is fairly intuitive and easy to learn. The story is just so fantastic. I don't think there will ever be a game that is this good!

I can't recall a game living up to it's expectations quite like Mass Effect 2 did. From the opening moments, you can almost smell the whiff of popcorn that would whisp through the lit up halls of a theatre. The music is amazing. Scene depending, it can go from quietly alluring to heart poundingly pulsating. From start to finish, Mass Effect 2 is a beautifully cinematic, brilliantly crafted and impeccably polished marvel.

The story has been and can understandably be accused of stepping sideways as opposed to moving forward, but I would argue that stepping sideways is also way of saying that the main narrative slows down in order to allow for a less immediate sense of exploration via smaller scale stories. It is through these small stories where Mass Effect triumphs. The mysterious threat of the reapers and their plans are looming in the darkness while the Mass Effect universe breathes. The loyalty missions, the mystery of the terrifying collectors and the side quests shine so bright in part due to these very reasons.

The gameplay is solid. Some might dislike the watering down of the RPG elements which is absolutely understandable but the combat in Mass Effect has never been at the forefront for me personally. It's fluid, it's fun and it's pretty - and that's all I need.

The cast of characters deserve their own mention. They are incredible. This rag tag team of well acted misfits are without a doubt, the best thing about Mass Effect 2. They are all so realised, each and every one, save perhaps Jacob, who despite being boring is still likable and believable. Thane, Jack, Samara, Garrus, Tali - I could go on, are all the beating heart to this starcrossed tale.

This is the peak of a series that is in itself almost perfect, and that is saying something. Mass Effect 2 is an absolute masterclass of its kind.

Boasting new characters, improved gunplay, removed annoying crap from ME1, a very well done and engaging story, and very meaningful choices. People will say that it lost too much of the RPG element, but I believe that it combines the RPG element and adds more shooter elements perfectly. The characters are still amazing, the story is even better than before, and the combat is the best ever. The game got rid of the annoying equipment menu in favor for a load out you select before starting a mission. While it was nice to select different weapons mid mission, the fact that that menu is gone is a plus. Speaking of equipment, without DLC's, the weapon selection is bare at best. The enemy is even tougher than before, and the final suicide mission is epic to say the least. To elaborate on the characters a bit more, they add more characters with even more depth, and you're able to meet up with a few of your friends from the last game. The loyalty missions are a vast improvement from the first game, and the dialogue is still one of the best features of the game. The cover system was fixed thankfully and makes combat much more fluid. As far as the story based DLC's are concerned, they are good and add to the story, and while I agree that they should have been in the main game from the start, they are worth the money.
Overall, it is the best game in the trilogy and has minimal drawbacks that don't detract from the 10/10 score.

Mass Effect 2 is a 3rd person shooter that continues the story of Commander Sheppard...
Who is customizable if you choose...
When the game starts you have the choice of loading your character and choices from mass effect 1 or start fresh and choose the important decisions from that game during a brief recap…
Which I was thankful for since the first mass effect wasn’t interesting enough or fun enough for me to finish…
Thankfully Mass Effect 2 is much more enjoyable...
Youre still dealing with the threat of the reapers here…
You wake up from a 2 year long comma.. Things have changed, past relationships have changed, and now you have to deal with the collectors who are working for the reapers…
And you spend the entire 24 hours of this game going to different planets, recruiting the best mercenaries out there and gaining their loyalty by completing their own missions with them after they join your crew…
And if you see a fine piece of booty on that ship, you can hug them...
    You can hug them all…
The sex scenes are no witcher 3 scenes...
But the option to romance is there if you want to see bras or naked backs I guess.
Or pretend that someone loves you while you shoot things with them.
Between each mission you’re back in your ship the Normandy, and you choose the solar system and planet to travel to, you can then mine some of the planets for materials to upgrade your weapons and ship, or land for the mission…
And before every land you choose the 2 characters to bring with you as well as edit unspent skill points and change their weapon loadouts…
But the journey to the credits is fairly repetitive…
There are a few cool missions in here that mix things up, making you use your brain to investigate or figure out how to get inti a secured location..
But for the most part you’re clicking r3 to get the tiniest idea where to go with the games added objective compass, which is for the most part useless as it goes crazy and often points in the wrong direction…
And you shoot everything in your way…
Take cover... wait for these super spongey enemies to need to reload, use your powers... swap your weapons or command your squad to use their powers and swap their weapons…hop out of cover, shoot them, move on… along your ways hack some doors for credits or to progress and do all of it over and over until you get a mission complete…
And none of these levels are interesting to run through.. They look and feel the same throughout... 0 cool moments... even the boss battles are lame... They’re just for the most part larger and spongier enemies...
This is all 24 hours of the game…
The combat is spaced out as you always have to find an npc to talk to and then they tell you to go this location and talk to someone else…
But none of this is ever interesting.. none of the dialog choices seemed to hold any weight…
    And seemingly didn’t matter…
I found myself just shooting or assaulting every time the option popped up to get on with it…

I understand why people love Mass Effect 2…
There are so many interesting characters with interesting backstories…
But beyond that I just don’t get it…
Did I have fun with the game? Yes
But it never blew me away…. The story was a cool idea…
The delivery of the story was a cool idea…
But the repetitive mission structure and level design stops it from being amazing
Mass Effect 2 is a Great game
but nowhere near this masterpiece that everyone has made it out to be.
    I give Mass Effect 2
    an 8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made my mom buy me the entire Mass Effect trilogy about a year ago. The graphics were by far the best in the third and final installment. But the second game, hands down, had the best character development I’ve seen in all my gaming years. (which isn’t that long) Developers of Bio ware took their time to make each character unique and special in their own way. Whether they were the descendant of a mind controlled psychopath or a giant jellyfish didn’t matter. Most of the the characters had a sense of humor, and that’s all it took for me to love them even more.
Mass Effect 2’s character development isn’t all that reeled me in, there’s customization. If you're really creative and love creating your own character then, bam! Mass Effect is right here for you. Change your Shepard’s hair to hot pink, make their eyes bigger than their nose, the choices aren’t endless. What matters most about creating the main protagonists is choosing their class. Be a heavy armored, weapon slinging, big health soldier. Or, be an adept and throw tables, people, boxes, and make random stuff explode! Each class holds different perks, whichever best suits your own personality.
Mass Effect 2 isn’t all save the galaxy and get anything you want. You have to build your story up. Kind of like a tower. You can’t mess up once or the whole thing will come crashing down. If you don’t do loyalty missions, you die. When you upset someone, you die. Throw a grenade against a wall, you die. Honestly I’m surprised I made it to the third game but hey, it was totally worth it. Except, SPOILER ALERT!! You die at the end of the trilogy! Still, seeing as this is a pretty old game, and I played it on an Xbox 360, it was more than enjoyable. The graphics, the plots, the humor, the quests. It was all pretty enjoyable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mass Effect 2 is a good game for what it is but a disappointment if you loved the first game. Here are my main gripes:

The choices made in the first game have no real consequence because most of the established characters are too busy to save the universe. Instead we get a crew of comic book rejects designed to hook psychologically scarred children and pubescent boys into the franchise.

Everything was simplified instead of expanded and improved. Yes, the first game had some issues but the concept was good.

The story means absolutely nothing. In the end you fight a giant terminator after working for a chain smoking James Bond villain. You don't get to fight a real Reaper. You don't get anything more than the same old "organics can't comprehend our existence" stuff.

The story is excellently told through frequent decision-making (in which fewer decisions’ results are exactly the same than in the original). Characters live and die by what you decide to do and say. However, weapon customization has been completely removed, which is a shame. Also, exploration has been cut back on a little too much. Once again Bioware offers another thrilling tale with interesting characters, locations and enemies. The ending mission of Mass Effect 2 is possibly one of the best constructed final missions ever and evokes emotions of fear, stress and anger towards the Collectors, Reapers and Harbinger. Knowing that every corner or passageway you pass one of your squad mates could die makes this mission unforgettable. The score to the game is also amazingly constructed and the voice actors now actually bring some emotion into their dialogue. As this is an EA game there is DLC however it is rather cheap around $5 AUS for around 3 more hours of story content. If you're now getting into the series I would suggest The Lair Of The Shadow Broker DLC as it is an important mission for Liara and Mass Effect 3 and also The Arrival DLC as it links ME2 to ME3. The characters are all likable and unique, and at the end of the day they are memorable -- a feat that few video games can achieve. Bioware crafted a rich sci-fi storytelling experience that stays in one's memory as one of the best space operas in any medium (video games, television, film, theatre, novels, etc). The story is so richly developed and has so much depth that it is arguable a better universe than that of Star Wars or Star Trek. The ensemble cast was chosen expertly, and benefits massively from the amazing talents of Mark Meer, Jennifer Hale, Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica), Keith David (The Riddick films), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica), Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now, The Departed), Seth Green (Robot Chicken), Lance Henriksen (The Alien series, the Terminator series), and many more extremely talented voice actors who deliver performances on par or better than those in leading films. The gameplay is fluid and satisfyingly enjoyable, and never becomes repetitive or a chore to complete. Probably the best video game I have ever played. So many improvements from the first Mass Effect. So much character depth, I could always talk to my crew (except Garrus who is too busy doing his calibrations). I enjoyed every single mission, and I mined planets to death, trying to buy all the upgrades for my ship and crew. Wherever Mass Effect 2 lacked, it was minimal. In my opinion, this is the BEST GAME EVER MADE. It is so perfect, I felt like I had complete control at the end(unlike in 3), I was a sucker for side quests and it actually paid off! I loved it so much, it felt like the perfect adventure, every part of it was an awesome twist or an action sequence. It was awesome.

Mass Effect 2. A little while back, I reviewed Mass Effect 1. It was an amazing game despite having some flaws. Now I've totally played through the game's sequel, and the time has come to review it. So, did BioWare improve on the flaws of Mass Effect 1 and make this game better than its predecessor, or is this game the average rushed sucky sequel to an amazing game? Let's find out.Mass Effect 2. Let's find out. The gameplay of this game has seen several improvements over its predecessor. The frame rate no longer dips, and there are fewer bugs and glitches. The Mako (the vehicle in Mass Effect 1 that you needed to roam around large scale planets that was very difficult to control) has been removed from the game entirely (Thank you!). The gameplay also feels a lot more like a third-person shooter now then it did in Mass Effect 1, which focused a bit more on the RPG elements than the shooter elements. This is a good change, because it makes the game that much more fun to play. Weapons now require ammo unfortunately, however, this is nothing to worry about, as there is plenty of ammo scattered around for you to pick up. This is just the combat aspect of the game however. This game also involves talking to people and aliens on planets all across the galaxy to advance through more missions in the game. This has also been improved greatly from Mass Effect 1. In Mass Effect 1, the only way to get the most enjoyment out of the game outside of the story is by completing seemingly pointless side missions. Now there is an even better version of these side missions. Your crew members will all have their own special missions for you to complete for them, that flesh out their characters more than the ones in Mass Effect 1. The other side missions are still there, but you'll find that the character missions will take up more of your time than these side missions. Of course, the RPG elements of this game still exist, but they have been streamlined to be less confusing than that of Mass Effect 1. Leveling up is now made simpler because there are less skills to choose from, which actually makes the game better than you might think. The gameplay of this game improves on Mass Effect 1's in virtually every possible way. As for the graphics, they also see quite a bit of improvement from the first game. The bland open planet environments that forced you to use the Mako to get around are now gone. They have been replaced by far more beautiful planets to explore. There is quite a variety of planets to explore in Mass Effect 2, and they are all as beautiful as a planet can get. The character models in this game are probably the best I've ever seen in a video game. It is one of the only Unreal Engine games I know that manages to use the engine to its full potential. Everything in this game is about as beautiful as a Science-Fiction game can get. Believe it or not, the story of this game has actually improved even more on the already spectacular story of Mass Effect 1! Mass Effect 2's story starts two years after the events of the first game. In that time, your character died in a battle that claimed your ship, but you are brought back to life by a corporation called Cerberus. You are recruited by a man who calls himself the Illusive Man, who tells you an alien race called the Collectors has been attacking human colonies. The rest of the story involves you trying to destroy the Collectors before they wipe out life in the galaxy. Once again, like in the first game, the decisions you make in this game's story will determine if your character will follow a good or evil path. The best part about this game's story however, is that you can import your character from Mass Effect 1, and several of the characters that you met in the first game will most likely reappear in the second (provided you did not kill them of course). Your character will look the same, and work the same as he did in Mass Effect 1. This improves on the story in pretty much every way. Overall, this is a game that improves on its predecessor in every possible way. It is a truly amazing game that absolutely must be played. The only real downside to this game is that if you haven't played the first game, you might be lost in this game's story, so it might be a good idea to play the original game before playing the sequel.

By far the best in the trilogy. I got bored driving that dune buggy across empty space in number 1 and 3 I just felt was number 2 only less interesting. Rip the series for not ending the way you wanted, you crying, whiny little spoiled, sniveling c*nts, but this game is still one of my top 10 of all time, even with the downgraded RPG customizations.

Mass Effect 2 isn't the Empires Strikes Back of the trilogy (That movie actually featured a story). What you have here is a sequel with a refined combat system and a plethora of strong characters (some of the best in Video-games). All depth in gameplay has been woefully simplified -- which is fine because the original was teetering on the line of action game and RPG -- but I find that itMass Effect 2 isn't the Empires Strikes Back of the trilogy (That movie actually featured a story). Mass Effect 2 overcomes its few gameplay weaknesses with a fantastic weave of dynamic combat, lavish presentation, and engaging character and weapon customization. But for all the myriad improvements that make Mass Effect 2's visuals so appealing and its combat so exhilarating, it's ultimately the way it moves us that makes it so memorable. [Feb 2010, p.56]

Despite all of the ways Mass Effect 2 is more engaging to play and explore, after 35 remarkable hours it was the characters that stayed with us… Game of the year in January? Oh, go on then. [Feb 2010, p.112]

Both an astonishing RPG and confident shooter, Mass Effect 2 is daring, shocking and often awe-inspiring in its use of choice. This is the future of storytelling in videogames. [Issue#, p.85]
