It also yields some tremendous DLCs that are actually worth your money. This game's DLC is a prime example of what DLC should be; once you beat the game, you truly haven't beaten it. Each DLC is a new 3-hour adventure that adds depth, and I loved them. This game gets a 9.5 out of ten. It's nearly perfect, but there are some annoying side-missions and periodic glitches. But with that said, this game is one of the greatest that I've played. Bravo, Bioware (What happened with ME3?). Expand

I absolutely loved this game. The story telling is great, the atmosphere is there. It does look very good. I enjoyed every minute of it. The game completely sucked me in. This game is excellent. Way better than the previous game in the trilogy. Boasting new characters, improved gunplay, removed annoying crap from ME1, a very well done and engaging story, and very meaningful choices. Mass Effect 2 just all comes together to deliver an experience you won't forget for a long while.

Mass Effect 2 makes a number of improvements over the original. Its combat is more polished with a wider variety of enemies to face (not mostly geth). Its squad is large and excellent; you get to know each unique character through their loyalty missions where you assist them with a personal matter. The story is excellently told through frequent decision-making (in which fewer decisions’ results are exactly the same than in the original). Characters live and die by what you decide to do and say. However, weapon customization has been completely removed, which is a shame. Also, exploration has been cut back on a little too much. Still, Mass Effect 2 is a phenomenal game and a great mix between an action-RPG and a third-person shooter. It’s an incredibly made, personal, memorable experience virtually from start to finish. One of my most beloved Sci-Fi RPG's I've ever played, I recommend it, the game has some seriously good RPG mechanics that I've seen in a game and the Universe actually feels like a universe, you attach yourself to the crew and feel devastated if you lose any of them in your ending. I can change the kind of bullets I want to shoot! Really, that's all? Too much shooter, not enough RPG! Need I remind you again that's what the game is. The story telling is good, even though the Collector's don't seem as much as a threat as Sovereign did in the first. Another issue, I don't understand how a Universe could go from having practically infinite ammo to using some cheap thermo clips. It's like the technology actually Devolved. I don't think I found an explanation in the game for it either. Personally I hate ducking and covering all the time, there are so many games the same "Shoot, Take Damage, Restore Health, Repeat" system that the first one didn't rely on. It also seems almost impossible to only get all renegade or all paragon the entire game. I'm usually always half and half. I do enjoy the team mates way more in Mass Effect 2. Most of them have some interesting back story that you actually want to learn. Bioware if you ever read this, thank you soooo much for getting rid of the long elevator rides! They were dreadful. In Mass Effect 3, can there just be a happy medium, please? Oh, and deeper RPG elements and raise the level cap higher without DLC. Expand

(Remember this was done as so many bitched about the copy and pasted Mako areas and the controls for this, rightly so). However instead of improving these areas their gone which was a stupid and VERY lazy cop out on Biowares account. The gameplay is quite simply FUN and at the end of the bitching due to a lack of RPG elements this is what actually matters. The shooting simply massacres Fallout 3 which is the best shooter RPG I had played, the actual shooting in fallout was bad and feels random, VATS saved fallout from being used as a football many times :}. Also the upgrade system is excellent and really streamlines the RPG element out, I hope this system becomes standard practice the differences they make are easily noticeable. I seem to be collecting squad members forever, but once I have recruited them they just spend the rest of the game sat in the hold. When you collect them they look like the most powerful being in the galaxy, but when you take them on quests they are rather ordinary. The graphical quality of the game seems to have not improved, and the citadel is now a wal-mart rather than the sprawling seat of intergalactic government it used to be. The planetary scanning is a boring flash game. The story line is gripping, the characters are awesome, weapons etc. But what happened to customization? What i loved about the first one, was not only the plethora of weapons, armor, omni tools and the like, but the customization you could put into them. For example, a lancer assault rifle, with a damage of 120 could be upgraded to with a combat sensor, kinetic stabalizer , and several different types of ammunition. Every weapon, and each armor at least has 1 or 2 sometimes 3 upgrade slots. I mean granted, there was only a set amount of items you can carry(150 i believe) but thats what was a lot of fun for me in the first one. Now each character, gets to pick an ammo type and have that active on your weapon. The thermal clip is another thing i didn't like in the second one. Call me crazy, but i love unlimited ammo lol. In the first one, there was a lot more points and a lot more attributes to help level up your character, when you leveled up sometimes and most of the time, in the middle of combat. In the second one, you level up at the end of each mission. Those are my cons, i wish they would have kept some of those things. But the rest of the game is solid. From the story line, to the upgrades to the Normandy, to doing endorsements in the citadel.
And to be completely fair, i fear change, so my review may not be the best on the spot, but if it helps you make a choice in getting it, i am glad i could help.

Would be a 9 if not for all the obviously cut story for DLC.

However, I must make it clear, I did not enjoy this game as an RPG, I enjoyed it as a shooter with a variety of abilities and a deeper than usual story. The lack of any deep RPG aspects was a disappointment seeing as the game came out from one of the top RPG developers in the world. As a shooter though, this game is one of the few that I truly enjoy. With a smooth cover system that never infuriated me, enemy AI that was not entirely stupid (I'm looking at you Lost Planet) and a collection of powers that spiced up combat, I was hooked. To be honest, I still am in many ways. With the massive amount of content in the game, there is much to do and a lot for me to enjoy doing as I replay the game. The story, while there are many detractors, I found to be completely satisfying, making me question whether Cerberus was truly evil and whether or not I wished to fulfill their tasks. Add in the awesome crew members and the amazing loyalty missions (Tali's, Jacob's and Thane's stand out above the rest) and I was deeply engrossed. Topping it off with an explosive finale and upon finishing the credit sequence I was ready to jump right back in. However, the game is not entirely perfect. There were some wacky dialogues with unimportant NPCs and many of the sidequests devolved into irritating fetch quests. Aside from that, the game managed to fulfill my expectations and provide a super fun sci-fi adventure. Expand

I was a bit disappointed with some of the elements removed from the series with ME2, but as a solidly written game where your choices had noticeable effect on the game world the problems I had were absorbed by the experience and balanced out so they didn't really detract from the overall experience.

Another awesome Mass Effect game, with better game mechanics than the first one, and tons more side quests and stories. Only negatives were that the character leveling system was too watered down and simplified, and a lot of cut-scenes look awful with their lack of anti-aliasing.

I've been playing this game for about a week, and so far I like just as much at ME 1. The playing options are quite extensive, giving you plenty of options to 'tweak' your actions. The Galaxy navigation is clumsy and confusing. The Level Up is different and not as detailed as in ME 1, but its OK. I haven't figured out how to upgrade weapons and gear, but that just means I'll have to play more. I like how the characters personalities have changed (you'll have to play to find out what I mean) The graphics and sound effects are very good. I turned off the music so I can't comment on it. This game is going to take a long time to complete, which I like. I also don't care for the way you scan/explore planets, but I didn't like the way it was done in ME 1. Expand

The other little problem is that the game feels a lot more linear than the first with the mission structure/set up and the universe feels a lot smaller due to the fact that you can't land on planets anymore, you can only scan them which sucks as a gameplay mechanic. Who is customizable if you choose...
When the game starts you have the choice of loading your character and choices from mass effect 1 or start fresh and choose the important decisions from that game during a brief recap…
Which I was thankful for since the first mass effect wasn’t interesting enough or fun enough for me to finish…
Thankfully Mass Effect 2 is much more enjoyable...
Youre still dealing with the threat of the reapers here…
You wake up from a 2 year long comma.. Things have changed, past relationships have changed, and now you have to deal with the collectors who are working for the reapers…
And you spend the entire 24 hours of this game going to different planets, recruiting the best mercenaries out there and gaining their loyalty by completing their own missions with them after they join your crew…
And if you see a fine piece of booty on that ship, you can hug them...
    You can hug them all…
The sex scenes are no witcher 3 scenes...
But the option to romance is there if you want to see bras or naked backs I guess.
Or pretend that someone loves you while you shoot things with them.
Between each mission you’re back in your ship the Normandy, and you choose the solar system and planet to travel to, you can then mine some of the planets for materials to upgrade your weapons and ship, or land for the mission…
And before every land you choose the 2 characters to bring with you as well as edit unspent skill points and change their weapon loadouts…
But the journey to the credits is fairly repetitive…
There are a few cool missions in here that mix things up, making you use your brain to investigate or figure out how to get inti a secured location..
But for the most part you’re clicking r3 to get the tiniest idea where to go with the games added objective compass, which is for the most part useless as it goes crazy and often points in the wrong direction…
And you shoot everything in your way…
Take cover... wait for these super spongey enemies to need to reload, use your powers... swap your weapons or command your squad to use their powers and swap their weapons…hop out of cover, shoot them, move on… along your ways hack some doors for credits or to progress and do all of it over and over until you get a mission complete…
And none of these levels are interesting to run through.. They look and feel the same throughout... 0 cool moments... even the boss battles are lame... They’re just for the most part larger and spongier enemies...
This is all 24 hours of the game…
The combat is spaced out as you always have to find an npc to talk to and then they tell you to go this location and talk to someone else…
But none of this is ever interesting.. none of the dialog choices seemed to hold any weight…
    And seemingly didn’t matter…
I found myself just shooting or assaulting every time the option popped up to get on with it…

I understand why people love Mass Effect 2…
There are so many interesting characters with interesting backstories…
But beyond that I just don’t get it…
Did I have fun with the game? Yes
But it never blew me away…. The story was a cool idea…
The delivery of the story was a cool idea…
But the repetitive mission structure and level design stops it from being amazing
Mass Effect 2 is a Great game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made my mom buy me the entire Mass Effect trilogy about a year ago. The graphics were by far the best in the third and final installment. But the second game, hands down, had the best character development I’ve seen in all my gaming years. (which isn’t that long) Developers of Bio ware took their time to make each character unique and special in their own way. Whether they were the descendant of a mind controlled psychopath or a giant jellyfish didn’t matter. Most of the the characters had a sense of humor, and that’s all it took for me to love them even more.
Mass Effect 2’s character development isn’t all that reeled me in, there’s customization. If you're really creative and love creating your own character then, bam! Mass Effect is right here for you. Change your Shepard’s hair to hot pink, make their eyes bigger than their nose, the choices aren’t endless. What matters most about creating the main protagonists is choosing their class. Be a heavy armored, weapon slinging, big health soldier. Or, be an adept and throw tables, people, boxes, and make random stuff explode! Each class holds different perks, whichever best suits your own personality.
Mass Effect 2 isn’t all save the galaxy and get anything you want. You have to build your story up. Kind of like a tower. You can’t mess up once or the whole thing will come crashing down. If you don’t do loyalty missions, you die. When you upset someone, you die. Throw a grenade against a wall, you die. Honestly I’m surprised I made it to the third game but hey, it was totally worth it. Except, SPOILER ALERT!! You die at the end of the trilogy! Still, seeing as this is a pretty old game, and I played it on an Xbox 360, it was more than enjoyable. The graphics, the plots, the humor, the quests. It was all pretty enjoyable.

What they dont mention is the neglect of nearly everything that made the game an RPG. Bioware is considered a top-tier developer of only the best games, but to be a great developer you need to be able to improve aspects of your games WITHOUT compromising others. Another aspect that they seemed to always be pushing in everyones face was the ability to port your ME1 character to the sequel. Gamers were led to believe that the decisions made in the first would have a moderate if not profound effect on the second. Unfortunately it only affects maybe 5 minutes of reading text. The plot is in no way affected by any choices you made in ME1. The new Mass Effect shed its RPG-TPS hybrid format to become a TPS with a few RPG inspirations and speech sim. After all, this is Bioware, a company who built their gaming foundation on so-called western RPGs; this is the company that gave us Baldur's Gate, the original Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age Origins. Sadly, Mass Effect 2 shares very little in common with any of those titles and, at the end of the day, however, Mass Effect 2 is a glorified third person shooter with poor excuses for RPG elements. . The game itself is extremely linear with the game holding your hand to each and every mission. You'll "level up" just by following the linear path and by the time you get to the final mission you'll have, at least, 3 of 5 skills maxed out, with just as many skills maxed out for each of your crew. No thought required, no pros and cons of choosing your points. . The story elements are also linear and contrived and have little to no effect on the result of the game. There are some choices which do have an effect at the end, but they are very few. Paragon and Renegade have been stripped of all meaning as you could be a world class a-hole and your crew will still LOVE you. . I WANTED to play the original Mass Effect several times and I played it for a good two months after release. I played Mass Effect 2 twice, just to keep my two ME1 characters in step and haven't turned it back on one week after playing. I've seen everything there is to see, I have every weapon, every upgrade, both my Shepards are level 30 already and rolling in money and resources. There's no reason to go back and do anything in the game, especially since exploration, hacking/bypassing and loot have been completely gutted from the game and replaced with shells of their former selves. . I'm extremely disappointed in the path Bioware took. If I wanted to play a cover-based or squad command shooter, I'd pop in Rainbow Six or Gears of War. I can only hope ME3 takes the strengths of ME1 and the strengths of ME2 and fuses them together to make a much better concluding title. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a reasonably good game on its own, but serves as a pretty crappy sequel to it's predecessor, the sublime Mass Effect. The game does a lot of things really well, most notably the deep characterizations of all its cast. Where it falls short, however, is in the narrative. The game starts out with a jarring disconnection from ME1, Shepard's death and 2 year resuscitation period. The game then goes on to implausibly establish Cerberus, characterized as a small-time rogue alliance black ops group in Mass Effect, as some sort of covert super organization with financing and intelligence networks the Alliance can only dream of, and as Shepard's benefactor. You're then forced to work for them, ordered to carry out missions agains The Collectors, a threat we're told is related to the Reapers, though how Cerberus formed this suspicion is never made clear. You proceed to spend the entire game going around, hiring volunteers to your cause (who never need convincing), while waiting for Cerberus to tell you what the Collectors are up to and when to go after them again. The story as a whole is very flimsy, and throughout it feels like Shepard is just Cerberus' gofer, which starkly contrasts with ME1, where Shepard uncovers the plot through his own actions and interrogations. The Mass Effect series purports to be story-driven, so when the story isn't good, as is the case here, it's pretty distracting, no matter how good the rest of the game is. I can't talk about ME2 though without talking about how awesome all of the characterizations are. I loved some characters, hated others and came to love some that I initially hated. In every case, the characters are strong, have substance and depth, and are worth talking to. The value of ME2 can be found here, and it's a shame the rest of the game couldn't reach the same level of standard. Expand

PC keyboard setup is poorly designed, and the fact that you actually have to fly the ship to your destination, is both laughable and tragic, game's as good as the first one so far. But would be nice when porting a game to remember KISS keep it simple stupid when setting up the functions on a keyboard.

It's kinda weird to see such high ratings to ME2. Not a bad game by a long shot, but it was SIGNIFICANTLY dumbed down in the sake of streamlining... The game is a thousand times more linear, the characters are much blander, the missions aren't quite exciting, and so on. Inventory management, even if a pain, is way better than no inventory AT ALL. Weapon management is no longer relevant, as every member has the same upgraded version (some kind of Cerberus "standard issue" policy, perhaps?). Planet exploring, while buggy, was much more rewarding, interesting and "role-play-y" than the current boring and pointless "flash game" scanning. Bioware should try to reach some level of balance in their simplification attempts, or ME3 will probably be the D&D 4.5 ed, of videogames. Expand

A break of Microsoft's quality rules. - NPC constantly mount scenery and on have a couple of times found myself pushed into blocked off areas that required a restart. - Most RPG elements have been cut down to appeal to a more casual and the FPS audience. - Exploration of world has been replaced with a rotating globe that moors even the most patient of players to death. - At the end of each level you are presented with a end of level summery. This thrown at you abruptly and completely breaks the flow of the game. They have tried so hard to make it a cinematic masterpiece but this one thing is the most out of feature in the game. - The level summery also provides completely useless information. Why do i need to have my experience abruptly stopped to be told about how much platinum i collected? The environments feel like they don't have a real function apart from to challenge the player. For instance roes of walls across walkways. Don't get me wrong - the game has many fantastic moments and is a work of digital art. But it feels like it was made by share holders and not artists or designers. A must buy - but not a must enjoy. I just have one more example of how uninspired the developers must've been: I recently played through the The Ur-Quan Masters. (a port of the classic Star Control 2). An important part of this game is traveling to star systems and collecting resources. "Ah" you say. "That sounds like ME2!". Well, up to a point it is similar. The solar system is laid out in exactly the same way. You see the star, the planets, and their orbits. You move your ships between them to scan them and pick up resources. The thing is, though, that scanning the planets takes a few seconds in SC2, Then you launch a lander and drive around the planet (in 2-D view) shooting nasty aliens, dodging earthquakes, lightning and fire while picking up the resources. This entire process takes about as long as it takes to "loot" a planet in ME2. In ME2 the same process consists of scanning the planet (by holding down the left mouse button while slowly moving your mouse around) and collecting it's resources by clicking the right mouse button... Really. This is something you have to do quite a bit of in the game, and they couldn't come up with a system that was at least half as entertaining as what Accolade managed almost 18 years ago? When I think Bioware, I think huge worlds like Baldur's Gate 2 and a ton of character development and side missions like KOTOR. Neither of those were here in Mass Effect 2. Sure, there were "planets," but you only ever really saw maybe one or two districts of it, probably less. Even if there was a big environment, there wasn't much you could explore. As far as character development goes, it was okay. There was about one side mission for each character, some dialogue that told their past, and that's it. In KOTOR, you got a lot of character development: hours of dialogue, a couple of side missions leading up to one big side mission, the characters interacted and talked to each other, there was always something new to learn about each character. Though, I do think that Mass Effect 2 wasn't going so much for the "huge, awesome world, lots of composition, thinking man's game" sort of style like KOTOR. It was probably going more for a "third person shooter with a good story." Mass Effect 2 is like if Uncharted was an RPG, and in space, sort of...

Anyway, if you've ever wanted to play the game, you probably already own it. If your still on the verge of getting it, it's cheap nowadays so go right ahead. When you're done with it, trade it in for something else, it's not really worth keeping unless you want to see every possible outcome of the game.

Glitchy graphics, dumb as hell A.I., sometimes the characters will yell something in battle and it will sound like they're saying it in slow-mo for no reason, i dunno if its just me but i think shepard is looking at the ground whenever he's running and sometimes not even looking forward, the character modeling of shepard and some of the other characters is terrible (move like robots, sound like robots), the loading screens are way to long even for a Bioware game... I could probably go on for a long time about all the small things that pissed me off about this game, but i won't. And those were just the SMALL things that should've been fixed at the last minute had they actually wanted to make a GOOD game and not just a sequel that they knew would sell cause it had the title Mass Effect on it. Seriously, this is not the Mass Effect I know and love. I am fine with getting rid of the tedious RPG aspects, but they tried to make it like a TPS. This would've been fine, but AI is terrible, especially on Insanity difficulty. Let me describe a situtation i had yesterday... We run into some Blue Sun's Mercs and my partners take cover (so far so good) but then, they decide "hey, i don't like being safe behind this box where the enemy can't shoot me so i'm gonna jump over it and get shot at and die in 2 seconds." seriously, the AI is that bad. either that will happen or they will stand up while behind cover in an attempt to shoot an enemy, but won't go back down when getting shot at, thus leading to instant death on Insanity difficulty. Once again, small gripes I guess, but this game got pecked to death by the small stuff which kept it from being even a DECENT game IMO. The reason i say that is the plot is what i was really dissapointed in. The game consists of one mission: Destroy the Collectors. And that's fine, but you would think there would be more to it then just that with a Bioware game. Nope. That's it. They somehow thought making the storyline consist of finding all ELEVEN allies so you can go on a "suicide" mission (which it is if playing on Insanity with the dumb AI) was a good idea. That's all there is to the story. Really. I wouldn't lie. The actual "story" you could finish in maybe 10 or so hours. All in all, i'm extremely dissapointed in both this game and in the gaming community for giving such a piece of blatant trash good review just cause it's a sequel to such a great game.
