One of the watershed titles in the evolution of gaming gets a HD facelift and proves that it's still better than virtually every game that came since. A stone cold classic.

This game was fantastic at launch, it's been 10 years since the anniversary launch and I must say. It held up rather well, granted there are better ways to experience Chief's first adventure now like with MCC PC. And with the servers shutting down at the time of this review, there is nearly no point playing this. It was fantastic but it's on it's way out, you best play this on the MCC.

The antagonists are really interesting too, the Covenant, the Flood, and the Sentinels led by 343 Guilty Spark. Level design is mostly good, The Silent Cartographer is one of my favourites due to it being open and giving you much freedom unlike in Call of Duty campaigns and other shooters, another favourite was the Maw, it wasn't repetitive at all and the warthog escape was really fun and a perfect ending for the game, what I didn't like about the level designs were the repetitiveness especially in levels such as the Library. Another gripe I had was the lack of instructions from the game, while the Silent Cartographer was one of my favourites I did not know what to do after reaching the control room, I had to use Youtube. The gameplay is pretty good, nothing special as every console FPS built up on that gameplay. The A.I is really good as well, the way the Elites move around and the marines hopping in on the warthog with you. Overall this game is amazing and a must play for anybody who plays video games. It offers well balanced and dynamic gameplay, with advanced A.I that can react to anything you do, allowing levels to feel more like small open world games(which tend to get you lost though), all supported by the epic music that makes you feel downright bad*ss. Halo forces the players to adapt to problems that the Master Chief faces on his journey to save life in the galaxy, as they have to tackle them in different ways each time, the player will, over time notice each enemy's weakness, helpful features that vehicles or weapons have, or a better way to traverse the map.
343 payed huge respect to Bungie when developing this game, keeping the gameplay the same way that we knew and loved all those years ago, while DRASTICALLY improving the aesthetic, instead of making it HD and calling it a day.
The storyline, like all other parts of this masterpiece, is incredible, explaining every relevent detail while leaving some to remain a mystery, it has twists at just the right places, close calls that leave you biting your nails (without being overused), and is pretty much devoid of plotholes.

This is an excellent reboot of a game worthy of it's title.

An opportunity at any moment of the game to switch between original graphics and a remaster just excellent. A fine illustration of how it is necessary to do remaster. The soundtrack and perfectly sounds today, the header subject for a long time will remain in memory. To shortcomings unless that I can refer "inconvenient" management in 2018, especially transport. Well and mob can sometimes be up very much to standard that can be forgotten where you go and what are you doing. But besides for 2001 it is norm. Expand

For a game that is now 17 years old, Halo has aged with exceptional grace. Whilst this remaster has given everything a brush up graphically (and done a fine job of it too) the game itself is obviously unchanged and it is as much of a gem now as it was then.

It is worth pointing out obviously that games, consoles and the FPS genre itself have all come a long way since Halo came out in 2001 but at the time Halo was simply jaw dropping. It was a once in a generation game and it catapulted Xbox into contention with Sony starting the long waged console wars. You can play through this version and switch from the original graphics to the remaster on the fly and it will surprise you the difference between 2001 and was is now a 7 year old, previous gen remaster. But whilst the graphics for it's time were phenomenal there is just so much here that they got right.

Halo basically reinvented the FPS genre when it landed. The scale of the levels, the level of production, the introduction of the regenerating health shield. It added so much stuff to the genre that we now take for granted as staples of the genre.

But the levels still stand up to modern scrutiny. They are huge, lush and alive with action. The covenant and the flood prove worthy adversaries even on a normal difficulty play through. Their AI tactics are still great to do battle against and it feels just as bad ass to side step a hunter and one shot him as it did all those years ago.

The score is iconic, it's choral arrangements are perfectly suited and timed during the story to move it along and get the pulse racing during fire-fights. The enemies, for its time are widely varied if they do tend to be variations on a theme (yellow grunts, red grunts) but they're engaging and fun to fight against.

The storyline is brilliant and it is delivered with a level of accomplishment that makes you feel as though you are in your own action movie starring as the hero. Cortana and Master Chief have passed into video game lore as some of the best characters ever created for a video game and whilst Chief doesn't get many lines in this one, Cortana certainly shines.

But it's really just a wonderful demonstration of gaming. The gameplay is stellar and a poorly designed idea with exhaust vent explosions in the final chapter aside it never feels dull or repetitive and it keeps you playing and wanting more. Each firefight feels engaging and great fun to take part in, it retaught the way we fought enemies in FPS games. You can't get away with charging head on against too many of the characters or you'll be mobbed and likely killed. Constant movement, both on the ground and in the air allow you to even the playing field against the large number of enemies you're usually facing and it makes you feel like an absolute badass laying waste to all around you. The physics of the enemies when hit by a blast still look incredible to this day and, again, we are talking about a SEVENTEEN year old game.

What stops it from getting the all time great level 10 from me? Well the Flood, despite their incredible iconic introduction, get to feel very cheap and bullet spongey by the games end mainly because the designers just throw endless amounts of them at you for the last third of the game. The fact that some of them can resurrect themselves only adds insult to injury. I thought the Flood were a brilliant enemy design and the idea of flipping the script and having you (and the covenant) fighting a whole other species is very clever but I just wish they hadn't swamped you with them as much as they did.

The finale is irritating. The whole part with throwing grenades into exhaust vents felt like stalling for time and they finish with the Warthog section which is infamous for making you use the fairly poor controlling warthog against the clock. The warthog will flip at a moments notice and it drives like a shopping cart with one broken wheel, it never quite goes where you want it to.

You can lose a little bit too much progress by dying at times, though this is more a symptom of games at the time than anything Halo expressly does badly. More than once I saw where the game put me back after a death and it was very frustrating how much progress I had lost.

But these are minor criticisms of a brilliant, iconic game that changed its genre for the better. I've loved reliving my gaming youth for the 8 hours or so it has taken me to complete the story mode and the fact it still impresses you after all this time is just a mark of how brilliant it was. It says something when I'm putting aside playing new releases to replay the Halo series in order.

This game and the series as a whole is vital and vastly influential not only within its genre but gaming itself and it deserves to be applauded as such.

The care they put into being able to switch back and forth between the original visuals and the new with a single button press is wonderful. I compared them with each stunning vista I could find. 343 took care with this one and it can be seen. This is still one of my favorite shooters to date. The first installment in the series, "Halo: Combat Evolved" was arguably one of the original Xbox's most important titles, and it's often called one of the most revolutionary first-person shooter games of all time. Now, I personally didn't get to really play a "Halo" game until getting my Xbox One, which came with "Halo: The Master Chief Collection" right out of the box, but I'm pretty glad I finally got to play this game after so much time, because it's pretty great!
It's honestly a wonder that "Halo: Combat Evolved" still generally plays pretty well after so many years: the shooting controls are still generally fluid, the campaign as a whole is very thrilling and exciting, and the enemy AI remains very smart. Hell, I played the game on the "Easy" difficult (because I'm an easy-going gamer), and the game still provided plenty of challenge. That's a sign the game is doing something right. On top of that, the game's very grand, epic story and memorable characters like Master Chief and Cortana serve as proof that a first-person shooter can really have a rich, beautiful story, which is something i can appreciate. And from a visual/sonic perspective, this anniversary edition gives the game a pretty gorgeous HD facelift, the music remains very beautiful, and getting to toggle the graphics between the remastered and original graphics is pretty enjoyable as well.
All of this said, however, I don't think I can say with a straight face in 2018 that this game would stand as one of the greatest games I've ever played, because all things considered, there are several things about the game that haven't aged very well and are therefore frustrating. For starters, the level design starts to get a bit bland after a while, and in fact, there were several points where I felt like I was playing the same level again and again. On top of that, many of the levels are very big without giving extremely clear instructions as to where to go, so it's a bit too easy to get lost amidst these vast landscapes. Furthermore, the game's vehicles don't really control so well, which makes the final mission in the game (where you control the Warthog, a ground vehicle that is very bulky and easy to flip) damn near impossible to complete. All of these seemingly minor things only add up to hold the game back from really being one of my personal favorites.
Flaws and all, however, "Halo: Combat Evolved" still remains a pretty great FPS game. Even playing it now on the Xbox One, 17 years after its initial release, it's plain to see that it still has plenty of great things to offer and that, frustrations and all, it's still a game you should certainly play.

And the worst part about that, was that it wasn't even fun to begin with. Ever since the flood gets introduced and then the Monitor brings you into that forrunner building, it was the same 5 waves of flood for ever corner, and then there's 4 corners in a hallway... AND THEN there's an elevator at the end of every hall way AND THEN AGAIN there's 4 elevators meaning you have to do it 4 **** TIMES, IT'S JUST A WASTE OF TIME! Enough of that though. The saving system was not very well ported over, you could tell that the computer version would have had a much more convenient saving system but instead you just HAD to add you dumb checkpoints and force them to be your restart point, which made the game much longer than it needed to be. And now for story wise. The story had many many great ideas but the way they were created in the game didn't come out quite as good as it could have. The cinematics were really good but transferring the ideas that they came up with in writing, to game mechanics was not always very well executed. And a side note: Why the **** are all the weapons seen throughout the whole game except the shotgun? Why does the shotgun just suddenly show up at the end of the game and then become only a generally good gun. You'd think that if they're gonna save it till the end it would be because it's freaking sick but now, it was fine. About as useful as the Assault Rifle but not amazing or anything. Expand

Halo Anniversary is the remastering of Halo 1. You can now switch between the Xbox graphics and the 360 graphics almost seamlessly. It also adds reach's multiplayer into the mix which is always a good thing.

At certain points in the game, I noticed that the lighting looked better in the original version. I also noticed that the frame rate isn't very good in the graphical remake. (It looked as if it fluctuated from 30fps to less, and never higher.) Another thing I found disappointing was that there was no online multiplayer. I don't even think you could revisit the old maps from the original game. The only online multiplayer was Halo: Reach's multiplayer, and the maps were pretty limited. But bad things aside, the game is absolutely fantastic. If this game didn't have the problems I mentioned before, this would easily be a 10/10 for me. The story is the same, the voice acting is the same, the gameplay is the same; it's all the same as the original game, but with a few problems. The graphical remake is beautiful, and does the game much good. If you never played the original game, this game is a must buy. Expand

A terrific remake to a terrific game (for its time anyway). The old problems are gone (minus the grenades basically having the same blast radius and damage as a rocket). The fact that you could switch the way the game looks is the best part of the experience for those new to the series.

Great way to relive Halo CE's campaing in both updated & classic graphics. I love the ability to change the graphics while I'm playing the game to see how much different everything looks. But unfortunatley I would of gave this a 9 or 10 if the multiplayer was not Halo Reach.

This is what a HD remake should be like the controls are refined, there is new content (Skulls,Ternimals,Achievements). The campaign is as amazing as ever and the new graphics and remastered sound and you can switch back to the old graphics and sounds and seee the huge diffference the only real flaw is that the multiplayer is really a map pack for Reach but still this a must-buy for 360 owners

Looking at the old graphics, I find it so amazing that graphics back in the day were state of the art and it seemed that graphics cannot be any better than that. Fast forwarding to today, the graphics seem almost crappy. Although the graphics are great, it doesn't make Halo Anniversary good it's all about the gameplay and the story. Just a little heads up, I have only now gotten into the Halo story so my understanding of Halo is very limited. You play as a super solider named Master Chief and your job is to stop the Covenant and trying to destroy the Halo rings. There are many things you can explore during the campaign and many achievements you can find. The characters are very interesting, Sgt. Johnson is hilarious, Cortana is nice to help you out, and you will meet many other characters during the campaign. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of the greatest things ever created. No matter how many sequels Bungie decides to make, NOTHING can ever be as good as the original. Who's with me? HOO-RAH! It's so much fun to return to the tried-and-true method of slaughtering your foes with the MA5B, frag grenades, and a melee. And who can forget Assault on the Control Room, where you make use of every piece of machinery imaginable to finish the level: Scorpion Tanks, Sniper Rifles, Rocket Launchers! After playing Hallway-rail-shooters for years and years, (i.e. CoD, don't get me wrong, they're fun, but I'm tired of being told where to go and being completely limited in what I can do) it's good to return to flying Banshees and blowing those hunters away with a tank. The multiplayer is the same thing as Reach, so that's unfortunate, but whatever, playing the campaign with the newly-added skulls and split-screen co-op is more than enough to keep me going! I grew up in the dark ages with non-wireless internet, so whatever. This game beats Halo 2 and 3 over the head with a stick in my mind. Just give me an MA5B, and I'm a happy man. Expand

Remake it to look, sound, and feel like a brand new game while keeping all of the things that make the original great, intact. Weather your a casual Halo fan or just a fan of the genre you owe it to yourself to see where modern First-person shooters as we know them today got there start.

Gameplay: 9/10 It's not a bad thing that Bungie has taken the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" approach to developing every Halo game since the original. Halo:CEA feels exactly how it did ten years ago. For better or worse, nothing has changed. What does that mean? That means that you will wish you could sprint on many occasion and will want to memorize where health packs are located before tackling the higher difficulties. This also means all of the powerful Halo:CE weapons return as well. All of the weapons feel as they should and enemies aren't the bullet sponges they seem to have evolved into in the sequels. Movement is what you would expect from a Halo title especially if you've played the latest title, Halo: Reach. The game-play as a whole is very solid, if not stretched a little thin at times.

Graphics: 9/10 Artistically, Halo:CE always felt like the odd man out. Every other game was in sync as far as art style was concerned. It was as if Bungie didn't know what they wanted the environments of a Halo ring to look like in 2001. 343 Industry fixes this in Halo:CEA. Taking art assets from Halo 3 and Reach, 343 has done a fine job at helping this game to look in sync with the rest of the Halo Universe.
Running on top of the pre-existing graphics engine does bring the quality down, only in one spot though. The character models. These high detail models need to match the old models geometry that exists underneath them. That means you get characters that look great when standing still but mouth movement and facial expressions just look funny in an almost buggy sort of way. Nothing that isn't forgettable but it's a shame they couldn't have at least re-made the cut-scenes from scratch considering you can't do an on the fly graphics change in the middle of them. Oh did I mention you could change the graphics back to how they looked in 2001 at the push of a button? It's awesome!

Sound: 10/10 I was nervous when I heard they were re-recording all of the music and sound effects for Halo:CEA and for good reason. After 10 years, I know what Halo sounds like. The buzz of a plasma pistol, the pounding discharge of the sniper rifle, and the epic music that starts up as you make the long trek through a snowy battlefield. No matter how little they changed, it would not be for the better. Then I played the game, and was pleasantly surprised. Skywalker Orchestra did a great job at recreating what you heard in the original without trying to improve on it in any way other than improved sound quality. What this provides is an audio experience to match the visual splendor with the option to toggle all the audio back to the way it was in 2001 in the options menu. Like you would ever want to. 343 took great strides to make Halo:CEA feel like a 2011 FPS and it shows in the sound more than anything else. The character voices are just as you remember and fit in very well with the new audio.

Value: 10/10 You get arguably the best campaign in the Halo series, new collectables in the form of skulls, terminals, and achievements. Multiplayer offers six new multiplayer maps and a new firefight map to play. If you have already been playing Reach for a year than the multiplayer offering may feel more like a map pack rather than a full fledged multiplayer option but with 343 releasing playlists that very closely emulate the Halo:CE experience in the Reach Engine there is plenty of reason to assemble old school Halo Party's for some late night fun. For the true Halo fan it's a must buy and the price is a great deal.
But you know, James... Goldeneye was always better.

Either way, Xbox owners should definitely look at this game, because it is amazing. The game feels exactly the same as a decade ago, and it looks amazing too with Saber Interactive's new engine layering with the original engine. This makes the ability for swapping the new graphics into the old, a feature that fans will love. Even if the graphics are nice, they are pretty jittery and laggy, but maybe it is caused by the old engine. The story was definitely the most cinematic of the series, which I liked. It was very straightfoward and interesting, telling the story of Master Chief arriving on the Halo and finding out its secrets. I don't need to explain the gameplay...well...because every owner of the xbox probably played Halo games already. The multiplayer is amazing, using the reach engine and gameplay, but it's ultimately lacking. There are only 6 competitive maps and one firefight map, all remasters of maps from Halo 1 and 2. I feel there needs to be more maps for this game, but with a price of only 40 dollars, I don't complain much. Expand

Other than that, it's essentially the same Halo CE as it was 10 years ago, even with the amazingly powerful Magnum and somewhat confusing level design, though it is much better than previously, thanks to new lighting cues - especially in 'The Library'.
The multiplayer maps are again old, but don't feel it and have been faithfully recreated in Halo Reach. I am slightly disappointed in the fact that it's not the original CE multiplayer, but I suppose it's for the best, given the fact that you get the map pack code for Reach and as a result, you don't get the whole Halo community split into two games. The updated game modes are great and fix the common complaints with the Halo Reach setup (I.E. high reticule bloom, armour lock etc.) and Multiplayer, whilst not matching the other Halo titles, is still a blast to play. Overall, the game isn't the perfect 'Halo 1 if it was made in 2011' package like it was somewhat described to be, but it is a fantastic single player experience with a tried-and-tested multiplayer.

I mean there's nothing funner than turning on the BOOM, Pinata, Grunt Funeral, Grunt Birthday Party, and Bandana skulls and going on a rampage. Simple put, everything we dreamed for when we spent hours on end playing CE 10 years ago has come true. And at $40, spot on guys.

That being said, with the good comes the bad. First off the framerate issues if you don't install the game to the hard drive. Seriously WTF? Oh yeah Skyrim runs fine, but a remade 10 year old game has issues? Also why no love for the original multiplayer? I know it was unbalanced, but damn was it ever fun. Lastly the online campaign LAAAAAAGGGGGG!!!!! Man does it ever suck. Just like the framerate issue, why does this game have to run so poorly with online coop. Seriously, walk over to Bungie studios and if you ask nicely they might give you their netcode. Maybe.

The absence of skulls and terminals in the classic graphics is a let-down, although switching is easy, but it can disrupt the flow of classic play.
The multiplayer add-on was disappointing, the option for classic multiplayer should have been an obvious addition, but we are left with a non-exclusive reach map pack that contains only 6 remastered maps. The netcode for xbox live campaign play is disappointing and should have been altered if only to allow client-side aiming at the least. The addition of terminals adds a fun experience to the game and hints to Halo 4. The skulls included are fun, but the ease of achievements due to the Bandanna skull is disappointing. Overall, the game is a well-pieced reskin, and easily creates nostalgia and fun after easing into the campaign. The multiplayer is disappointing.

Giving this 9 for not messing with the classic game, and adding a ton of bonuses. This is worth buying a 3D TV for.

One day I've decided to check this out and I had an incredible surprise that how awesome HALO is, and I took back everything that I've said.

Playing Halo on LEGENDARY is really fantastic how the enemies Elites move. sometimes is frustrating as well, because seems to be like the AI guess how decision you gonna make.

Another thing that catches me on HALO is the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK. I use to hear the SOUNDTRACK once in a while to relax.

Aside from a few minor hiccups here and there the game functions flawlessly, although I must admit the glitch I had in mind when scoring this game was how on the level "Pillar of Autumn" Cortana just stands on her holo-projector with her mouth hanging open for no apparent reason. It seems like something that trivial could have easily been edited out in testing. Aside from that, the campaign is phenomenal. The remade classic maps for Halo: Reach provide a much needed breath of fresh air into a previously stagnant online community. A welcome bonus with your purchase of Halo CE: Anniversary. Expand

I love being able to see what the game was on a whim, rather than having to have my computer handy or keep switching discs. The new maps are fun to play and the firefight map is remarkable. It is disappointing, however, that they are done in the Reach engine. While I do love Reach, it detracts from the nostalgia I would like to feel while playing these maps. Nevertheless they are good maps. The $40 price tag makes it more worthwhile and soaks up some of the negatives. I feel sometimes that the game is almost too colorful, however, and the lack of a CE original multiplayer experience is somewhat disappointing. This game would have been worth the full $60 to me, only because I am a hardcore halo fan. For others, it may only be worth the $40. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is almost as good in reality as it ever was in your memory. The graphical update is welcome and the multiplayer maps are decent if not amazing. There are a few rough edges and cracks around the once infallible gameplay, but nothing that would stop you enjoying Halo: CE immensely the second (or first – lucky you) time around.

It's an amazing piece of gaming history, to be certain, but a purchase decision still comes down to this: If you're a fan of the series who loved or missed the original, it's a no-brainer. This is one of the best pieces of fanservice our industry has ever produced, and you need to go buy it. On the other hand, if you're an FPS fanatic trying to decide between this or Rage or Deus Ex, you may want to think twice before dropping 40 bones on a shooter that doesn't quite stack up to the competition.
