This game on 2nd difficulty is incredibly difficult and unfair. I did not have a clue what was going on, seemed like some bug. Of course save checkpoint was missing in this part of level so all hard effort was lost.
Game would be more fun if one could save anytime or at least it had proper checkpoints.

Gears of War was a good game to look back on. Many saw it as a alternative to Halo on the Xbox 360 and begun a chain of competition tournaments that made a franchise over the span of a decade. For others (myself included), it was also a interesting and cool beginning for a franchise that could also deliver a fun campaign. I want to say that Gears of War had alot of problems (when looking to its sequels to see what improvements were needed and what was lost), but I enjoyed it as a potentially great game waiting to be unleashed when its sequel would come. I also want to say that I came late to the party years after release and through a party of competitive people, I grew a bit tired of the multiplayer despite it being the main selling point.

The issues Gears of War had was its campaign was too short and reused too many enemies and the plot was convoluted with questions that did not answer. Multiplayer wise, P2P servers made host have the best connection and truly could annihilate whole teams by themselves if they had enough skill to prove it. It was the biggest sin the game could commit and I do not agree with veterans and fans of this game that its fair. The game also ran at 30 FPS on consoles, while PC was 60 which makes combat far too slow and it was easy to become frustrated with the input lag and slowness that its why some consider its fanbase one of the most toxic at one point.

I want to say though that the game is still good. I love the violent bloody killing with the chainsaw Lancers, the reload active concept is very creative and a risk/reward system that works and the way co-op worked in the campaign was really fun for couch play. I do think a 7/10 means a game is good, but its potential is not fully realized and is lacking as a result. It would come to no surprise that the future titles (for the most part) improve on this and make it one of the Xbox flagships of modern day.

Gears of War is a great game to play with friends via split-screen. The campaign is very fun and worth going through at least once. But where Gears of War lacks, is in it's multiplayer. As far as I'm concerned, it has one of the worst multiplayer modes I've played in a Triple-A shooter. I don't love this game like others do, but I do like it.

Quel dommage !

I remember I played Gears for about 20 minutes and not enjoying it, I was wrong, the game is cool, it has an interesting plot, good characters, a gameplay frantic action, and not counting the final boss that is very insane (damn General Raam a very great pdf). It's a good game.

Technically the game was astonishingly beautiful when it came out, really ahead of its time, but the lack of colours will still make you think that you're playing with a "sepia filter" that can be annoying by today standards, but really if I didn't know it I'd never guess the game is from 2006.

Concerning the gameplay once again when the game came out there was a lot of innovations (cover system, great IA) but its unpolished and by now we've see much better, the cover system doesn't respond perfectly every time, the enemies need way too much bullets and the feeling with the weapons is pretty much the same for each gun. Concerning the game design its pretty good and there is a nice rhythm between each situation .

But the big disappointment for this game it's its story beside being very short (6 hours top), it's pretty bad, the characters are bad-asses cliche with stupid dialogs, 0 backstory etc. And that's why the game didn't age well, the graphics are logically outdated, the gameplay is unpolished and a lot of other TPS (including Gears sequels) do better and the story is simply not an argument.

So if you're asking yourself if the game is worth a purchase today, the answer is still yes because you can find it pretty cheap and it's a good TPS so if you like the genre and want to try this famous title go for it. But if you're looking for a good story or only the best in the genre, you can find better.

The chainsaws, bombs, brain-plattering headshots, and gore are just the beginning of what is truly a tactical TPS game that defines what Next-Gen means. Props to MS and Epic for giving us such an awesome game and I can't stopping thinking about it as I'm typing this...must go play now.

I mean, it's got the standard gruff, grizzled heroes who probably gargle with Drano to deepen their voices, involved in the standard gritty, pumped-up action that takes place in the standard wrecked grey-brown rubbled environments that you'd see in at least a dozen other series. By all rights, it ought to be too boringly familiar. And yet it *is* better than most of the others.

Maybe its the fact that -- even for a game of its vintage -- the animations and textures are superbly done. Or maybe its the fact that the gameplay, especially in co-op mode, is fast, fluid and fun. Or maybe it is that writing and voice acting are top-notch, making the player really engrossed in the characters' stories. They even got Futurama's Bender to voice the main character, Marcus Fenix (Not that you'd notice, the actor sounds completely different in this).

Or maybe it is that the characters' main weapon is a rifle that doubles as a chainsaw and that you can use it to tear the bad guys right in half.

Come to think of it, it's probably the chainsaw.

The graphics are average but everything, absolutely everything is dark and gray. I'd say this game, for modern audiences, deserves about a 5 out of 10. But, that's not taking into account the game breaking bug that never got fixed: the save games. It isn't enough that the checkpoints are too far apart to begin with, it's impossible to know when the game saves exactly. Not only that, we (I played with a friend in split screen) constantly lost our save game, having to play the same section over and over again. We never finished the game but we did see the berserker a couple of times, maybe that gives you an indication how far we were in the game.
EDIT: as I've read that the sequel and threequel have the same save game bug I will definitely not be playing those unless it's for free. I would however give a new game for Xbox One a shot if this bug is fixed. I believe Judgement already fixed it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gears of War was one of the first games I played on the 7th gen consoles. I was fairly young at the time I played this (around 13 years old, I think?), and to this day consider Gears of War one of the best third person shooters ever developed.

Story-wise, this game would be passed of as decent. But the story isn't the bread and butter of this game. No, the bread and butter is everything else. Atmosphere, voice acting, characters, enemies, chaos, blood and gore, guns, and controls/combat mechanics.

Every stage in the campaign is memorable. I first played this game back in 2008 when I was thirteen. I'm nineteen now, and I can recite to you every single moment, every word that's said, and the layout of each stage. Why? Because this game is unforgettable. As mentioned before, the story is a bit flat, but the combat, dialogue, and atmosphere makes up for lack of story. Hell, it pretty much IS the story.

The enemies are unique and terrifying. Take the Corpser for example. The Corpser is a giant spider-crab hybrid that digs huge tunnels for the rest of the Locust (the enemy) to travel through. Not to mention, it's strong enough to level entire buildings.

The guns are another unique attraction this game offers. Take the Lancer for example. It's an assault rifle with a mounted chainsaw on it. Tell me, what other game has that?

The developers hit it out of the park with the characters. Every one of them had there own personality. The developers also nailed the voice actors for them.

The atmosphere of this game is dark and gritty, and leaves you wondering. There's destruction everywhere, monsters around every corner, and enough blood and gore to fill the ocean with.

The game would be perfect, if it weren't for a few flaws. I'll list them now:
-Sometimes, the fighting can be a little repetitive. However, there is always a way that makes the fight feel fresh. This is most likely because of the fantastic game design.
-The game can feel a little too dark. Lighting isn't this game's strong suit, but many things make up for that.
-The story isn't very well explained, and the ending doesn't bring everything together or reveal anything. But, many things make up for that.
-The boss battles are kinda lame. For example: The battle with the Corpser was very disappointing. In order to kill it, you must push/fight it back into lava. The way to do this, is to stand still and wait for the Corpser to attack, and then shoot it in the mouth. Yeah, it was that easy.
-I can't say much for the multiplayer of this game. I barely played it, mainly because I didn't have Xbox LIVE until Gears of War 3. However, I can say that in ALL of the Gears of War games, the multiplayer is ruined by just one gun: The Gnasher shotgun.

Over-all, Gears of War is fantastic. While the lighting wasn't great, the boss battle laughable, and the story flat... the characters, voice acting, atmosphere, fun-factor, combat(while sometimes repetitive), and gameplay mechanics made up for them. I give Gears of War a sold 9/10.
