Story driven game = Gears of War?

Sorry, but you must be kidding. If someone buys any of the three Gears of War-Titels for the story, you've got something wrong. Seriously. This game is about action and having a damn good time. Because Gameplay wise everything was told before, i decided to add some information for the owners of a 3D-TV. First of all, the 3D Mode of Gears is gorgeous.

First of all, the 3D Mode of Gears is gorgeous. You cant compare the quality of Gears's 3D effect to any other existing 3D title for the xbox. It pushes 3D on a complete new level. I own a PS3 and played all popular 3D titles so far (Killzone 3, Resistance 3, Crysis 2, Super Stardust HD and so on), but Gears 3 does not have to hide itself, compared to the PS3 3D effect.

The depth, especially when you are in cover, looks amazing and the texture resolution and framerate are superb, compared to other 3D titles of course. everything runs smooth.

So if you are looking for a superb action game with a very good 3D support, give this game a shoot!

Gears of War 3 in my book is epic! All of them are great games, and have changed the gaming world much like Halo has. The characters from the previous 2 games return along with some new characters but I just could not get myself to care for or take any of them seriously because of their bland and annoying personalities specially the buff male characters who look like freaks of nature and mutated themselves. The campaign was fun and they have made some improvements over the gameplay but it is still very linear with its share of frustrating moments and still way to short for the wrap up of the triology but I still enjoyed it and the EXP system is really a great addition and exactly what the previous two games needed in the campaign and the new weapons are also unique and fun to use. The multiplayer is definitely much better than the one from Gears 2 they have added new modes and reworked the Horde mode and they are all really fun and much more strategic than repetitive and boring.. The online multiplayer for the campaign which allows a 4 player Co-Op is really cool however playing the campaign with offline multiplayer with a friend by your side with the awful split screen can be really frustrating. The graphics are just amazing it is nice that despite being out for so many years the 360 is still not showing its age. The game's voice acting is fine but could have been alot better and realistic. Also I still did not see that many changes in the Single player from Gears 2 this game it still feels more like it predecessors. Overall I think Epic Games took 2 steps forward and 2 steps back in my opinion don't get me wrong I still think this is a really good game but I think it is getting overpraised because as the ending of a 5 year triology it is a little disappointing. 7.5/10. Story mode falls on its face a little. With any story i feel the toughest part to nail down is a satisfying ending and gears of war 3 pulls the old "i win button" one wich is a fairly large cop out in story telling. There were some great parts of the story to play through such as defending anvil gate but its a bit short and some of the plot is a bit daft.

I give the game 7 out of 10 based largely on multiplayer, the story itself has good characters and not alot else and seeing as its haf the game its underpreforming brings the overall score down for me.

Since gears of war 1 i loved this game but 1 had a HUGE multiplayer learning curve. If you did not shotgun or pick up a special weapon you were out of luck. It was all about quick reflexes and bounces of the wall. So to start I will explain the differences I see in multiplayer that makes it perfect. First off the movement, to say only guns and maps changed is idiotic and blind, go play gears 1,2, and then 3 and you will see a major diffence in the smoothness of the movement. From roadie running to aim to getting behind and off cover and overall movement it's amazing. Going from extremely slow matchmaking based off host to a little better in gears to dedicated servers in 3? Extremely fast matchmaking and virtually lag less game if your connection is decent. There is no gun in the game that you can not use. Gears 1 was mainly shotgun. Gears 2 was a little weaker shotgun, explosive, and sniper. Gears 3 adds a lot stronger rifles to make it almost necessary to work as a team as apposed to lone wolf making it a lot more accessible to new players while keeping it balanced for the day 1 players. They went from a gloomily dark color palette and added brighter colors easily distinguishing locust and cog. The graphics are amazing and the detail is incredible. And to complain about 45$ Day 1 DLC it is weapon camo, it has no impact on the game. They are doing it to fund the dedicated servers. The gears multiplayer is the most balanced I have ever experienced but it does take time to grow on you. Repetitive dying might annoy you, i sure was making me not play the first one for months. But the day you can bounce off walls and do a pop shot you will feel a challenge to get better and a game that takes great developed skill to be a great player, overall offering a better experience that the way easier shooter games of this generation. There is a reason this franchise went from my most hated to my favorite, it takes time to grow on you. The single player is great especially this third one adding four player coop making it a way better experience. The lambent add a great challenge and the feeling a hopelessness adds Dalton to the wound in the falling gears universe. The holy s**t moments are bigger than ever and the lines are as enertainina as the first. Horde 2.0 is a great experience adding the tower defense portion add greater depth with boss fights adding a greater challenge. The money incorporation adds customization and ability to re buy in if you die and a end points makes a reachable goal that will prove a challenge on insane dificulty. Beast mode is a great spin on the horde where you play as the locust. It is fun but my once complain about this game is that beast mode is extremely short but not much to besmirch my score for the fact the everything else add such great play value that this game will keep you entertained for month. All 10 maps 9 new are destined to be classics. My advice for you is to give this game a try and keep playing because it will grow on you. Thank you Epic Games for making this the first time a hyped up game actually surpasses what I expect. Forever live the gears universe!! Expand

The multiplayer modes are a lot of fun and exceedingly well balanced. As a long-time Gears of War 2 multiplayer, I can see why there is some controversy around the changes that have been made to multiplayer. The multiplayer feels less strict, with tighter controls and it really emphasizes the need to work as a team. I think a lot of the complaints around GOW3 multiplayer basically centers around GOW2 fans who can't use the same old bag of tricks. The ranking system also seems to work a lot better now too, so some of these players who are upset about getting beaten could just have found themselves with a new class of opponent.

For many of the GOW3 multiplayer games, players with good map knowledge and tactics won the games every time. The teams with the most organized attack plan (whether on purpose, or by accident) constantly dominated.

    Nitpicks.
I find that there is some weird stuff happening around interacting with players/bots that are downed. You seem to need to be in JUST the right place to revive them, or to use them as a shield or execute them. I have lost a few matches as I was fumbling with the controls to use a guy as a shield but couldn't quite get it right.

Despite these minor issues. This game is very well made and one of the highest polished games I have ever player. The whole presentation oozes quality and perfectionism.

    Great Job EPIC

The multiplayer bots seem to have been upgraded as well. While still not the same challenge you get from human players, they WILL kill you if you are careless or make a mistake. On every server I've played on so far, any bots playing have held their own and were not "gimmes," or (much of) a weak link in any team.

This game is huge. Even after completing the single player campaign on "Hardcore" (a step I wish I could just skip, and go straight to Insane), I still feel like I have only scratched the surface.

GOW3 lacks any suspense. No creatures of the night, no scary encounters, The first game even had lots of "wholly **** moments. GOW3 instead gives you zombies waves. Then fails to provide any real risk or thrill factor with these zombies. They die with one hit, they don't grab on to you, they move at normal speed. Where is the ripping your gun away from you? Or having the zombies jump on you and you have to shake them off? Even the missions lack any sense of urgency. Where is the 3 minute countdown? Or defend the base for 15 minutes? Where is the LIMITED AMMO!!!! While the level design is amazing, the battle fields look great, with lots of room for fights, lots of great places to stick and move, but GOW3 has moved away from this tactical type game play. In the first Gears game, you had to out flank turrets, move quickly cover to cover, the grub also (on the harder difficulties) were quick to charge your cover, jump over and try to instant kill you. GOW3 is pretty much setup at one location, cover shoot, cover shoot till everyone is dead. No need to move forward to advance your position.

Great suspenseful moments in the first Gears game, where the Grub is climbing over the barricade forcing you to switch from your lancer to quicker melee weapon are non existence in GOW3.

This game is designed to be played by 4 people, akin to the whole Left 4 Dead Zombie horror game. (Which explains a lot)

But there is not 4x times the enemy on the screen 4x the action, 4x amount of stuff going on. You don't need to have some of your team flank the enemy while you move up and one guy hangs back with a sniper. As before when you take some damage you will have the option to be revived. Except now you have 3 other team mates to do it. Sometimes, you literal cannot be killed. Start firing, get taken down, get almost instantly revived, repeat. My first run, playing on Hardcore, I barely had to use the cover system, and with instant revive from my teammates you almost don't need it.

ALSO, because you have 4 people playing, the designers felt that those times where you died by explosion, head shot, curb stomp, or the infamous Torque Bow have to be turned down if not gotten rid of. This takes away a lot of risk, thrill and difficulty in the game. In the first Gears game, the sound of a Torque bow being charge up followed by the sound of the explosive arrow hitting something, was a nerve wracking experience. That weapon made you take notice, and move a little different. Now I take the damage, maybe if iâ

EPIC have done a tremendous job with Gears 3, they have eliminated the 4 major issues with previous games:

    1) Host advantage
    2) Lag
    3) Overpowered Bots
    4) Balance with Weapons

One of the negatives of this game is that there aren't enough maps or new game modes for Multiplayer but EPIC have already confirmed that future DLC maps are coming soon. My other negative is the Sawed Off shotgun, the gun requires no aiming and skill, it needs a significant "nerf". But these issues are very minor, it's easy to avoid a Sawed Off, it's like avoiding a Chainsaw from the Lancer.

10/10 EPIC, the introduction of Dedicated Servers has made Gears of War 3's hit detection flawless!

MP is pretty tight though, much better than GOW2, but still, not as good as GOW1. horde 2.0 is still pretty fun, and is in fact much better than the original. i'm glad they decided to throw bosses at you, from previous games, after the 10th wave. it gets super intense. beast mode is just ok. it's not nearly as exciting as horde. but it's something different.

one other small grip i have about this game: you used to be able to kick dead locust all over the place after you blew them away. what happened to that? now they just shrink away and disappear. i know it's a minor thing, but i LOVED doing that, just rolling around in a pile of gibs. but anyway, you could say that i'm mostly disappointed with this game. once again i bit, due to effective marketing hyperbole.

next time Epic, please assume your fan base aren't slobbering, hyperactive, knuckle dragging tweens. it wouldn't kill you to make a game EVERYONE can enjoy.

It seems like im playing GoW4 rather than GoW3, with all the unexplained, un-introduced new characters, (i assumed they were a bunch of "red shirts", but was sadly mistaken) setting and location not to mention the complete lack of locust. I heard that alot of this was explained in the 19 comic books that Epic released, but I feel that the finale of the franchise should not ride so heavily on cross-media. Without trying to spoil too much, I was greatly disappointed with the games conclusion, which seemed all too rushed and convenient. Im not saying that they should of killed off all of the characters, but I would of liked the game to stir some emotion rather than cliche in its closing hour.

Game play is the same as the others, along with the repeat and rinse maps. Running from one section to another, you will certainly know when to expect a Locust attack. I was hoping for something new in the game play, so I was disappointed with how similar to the other games each level felt. The campaign arcade mode was interesting for a short while, earning points for position on a high score table.

Multiplayer faired better. I'm not a fan of competitive multiplayer, so I always turn my attention to co-op. I loved beast mode, laying waste to the Stranded and the heroes of GoW, but horde mode was excellent. In Horde mode you earn cash to build and repair defences which hinder the locusts as they try to wipe you out. My only problem with horde mode was that it was somewhat easier to kill the locusts at normal difficulty. XP can earned in campaign and carries through to multiplayer and, every so often, your friends may jump in and help you at any time.

Overall GoW3 doesn't offer anything new over GoW and GoW2 that would warrant forking out £40. In some ways it is a missed opportunity to close a terrific story. For me, horde mode in GoW2 feels more hectic than in GoW3.

    So 5/10 from me.

I often find myself playing as Marcus when I chose Carmine as my character and it can get annoying. Also I didn't get to keep any of my Beta unlocks because I was unaware that you needed your saves to keep them, I assumed multiplayer unlocks were saved online as they should be. So you cant play multiplayer at a friends house because you need your saved data. My only other complaint is the campaign script. Cheesy, corny punch lines one after another. Its hard to take the characters seriously at times. Besides those few minor issues, this is a great game. The multiplayer gameplay is unmatched fun and the variety of ways to play online means for endless fun. Horde, Beast, Versus, and Arcade modes give you plenty of hours of fun gameplay. Not to mention, there is nothing more satisfying then blowing and enemy to bits with one shot from your Gnasher. The campaign is very gripping and will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time with many plot twists and unexpected turns of events. Overall this is an incredably fun game and if you dont have it yet, get your a$$ up and go buy it. Expand

Then adds a ton of gameplay fixes and tweaks from gears 2 and adds even more stuff you never even knew you wanted but can never again live without, massive meat cleavers of death? yes please! Mechs made from solidified awsomeness? Please sir i want some more! Beast mode and 4 player co-op campaign? Too right!

    But wait, theres more.
The campaign is probably the most fun ive had playing a video game since i played cod 4 way back in the day, its extremely well paced and balanced, theres always new stuff being thrown into the mix to keep it fresh and interesting and the story is arguably the best gears story yet, with the addition of 4 player co-op campaign, the most epic moments known to man and some truely heart wrenching moments to puncture through the violence and straight into your soul, you got yourself a damn fine campaign to enjoy.

Multiplayer has been beefed up, ironed out into a chrisp responsive ultra smooth strip of chrispy bacon made of whole grain gaming goodness. Fresh outa Mr Blazinskis oven and ready to be devoured and enjoyed.

every single tiny little problem that plagued gears 2's multiplayer has been fixed, there is never a second where you dont have 100% control of your charector and the dedicated servers ensure that the action never skips a beat.

The multiplayer is now more accesable and deeper than ever, the addition of team deathmatch with respawns has really opened up the multiplayer experiance to those inexperianced gears noobs out there.

New additions to the game modes are beast mode, where you play as the locust as you sabotage the pitifull humans defences and bend them to the will of the hive mind, 4 player campaign co-op as i mentioned, team deathmatch, as i also mentioned and beast mode which has been revamped and now includes the ability to build fortifications with the cash you have earned slaughtering your enemys.

So yeah, if you dig gears or shooters in general id say that the single player and multiplayer modes more than justify you parting with your cold hard cash, i will say one thing before i go though, fear and respect the sawed off! It can be your best friend or your worst enemy.

    See you online

    * TVs and other in-game objects that cannot be destroyed with gunfire. In fact, you can shoot holes in the screens and they still display a picture! Where's the logic in that?!
    * No bullet wounds; just heaps of gratuitous blood.
    * Distasteful executions such as the 'curb stomp' which cater to teen bloodlust.
    * Juvenile, one-dimensional characters with immature dialogue bordering on the moronic.
    * Enemies with no personality. They're really just cannon fodder in different shapes and sizes.

    In Horde Mode:
    * Selectable, glowing fortifications which totally destroy the sense of realism before each wave.
    * Cardboard cut-out decoys that also destroy realism and supposedly fool otherwise intelligent enemy.

Instead, the AI serve as healers when you go down, since even on Insane difficulty you can still get revived. I found myself just sitting on the ground most of the time during the boss battles, just waiting to get revived by a bot. Getting downed instead of dying produces a very choppy run through. Also, the AI have choppy, stupid remarks about everything imaginable, and the cut scenes are even worse. They try to throw in some stupid relationships between the characters, too. There is no plot, just a never ending series of battles as you move from level to level. About the final boss battle.... just boring and long. Shoot it in the mouth, get behind cover, and repeat a billion times. And there is only 1 single checkpoint during the last battle. I ended up dying at the very very end when on Insane, and had to go back way to far every time.

Lambent are stupid and annoying. Just be warned. The only reason I give it a 5 was I like a lot of the new maps, graphics are great, and a lot of multiplayer action is fun.

The Gears of War series trilogy concludes with this entry and the people from Epic Games bring us another action packed experience. Subtle refinements can be found throughout, However outside of some expansion to the multiplayer element it doesn't do that much new for the series. Still this is one any 360 owner needs to check out.

The campaign is exactly what you would expect from a Gears game. The four-player co-op has never been better, but outside of a few new enemy types and some great set-pieces it doesn't really do anything new. However it is hard to complain when the action is this solid. It's still a heck of a lot of fun.

The story behind it all is pretty solid as well. However the emotional moments fall flat due to the way these steroid-pumped heroes have always been presented. It concludes the series well though and manages to have some interesting twists on what we all thought was going on.

When you're finished with the campaign the massive multiplayer will keep you busy for a very long time. Matches are a blast and the maps are well designed. The co-op modes steal the show however. Horde mode is back and bigger than ever. The beast mode is an interesting twist that puts you in the role of the Locust racing against the time during rounds. Whatever mode you play you are in for hours of fun.

However multiplayer has one big issue nowadays; you have to buy all the DLC in oder to play on dedicated servers. Not downloading the DLC means no multiplayer for you. You can download the on free map pack and be able to play on host servers so it's not so bad. However in order to experience the full force of it you better be willing to shell out some cash for the DLC. Something to keep in mind if you are planning to rent this game like I did.

Overall despite it's flaws this is a complete package. It's a fitting end to the story of one of the 360's biggest series. With action and content this tight, it would be foolish for any 360 owner to pass this up.

There is a cut scene of people opening and closing doors because I think perhaps it needs loading times between small portions of the game? I wish I could just walk down long corridors instead of cruddy cut scenes. Also, maybe that's done as well... I recall many rooms that were vacant... after awhile I ran until I came upon an enemy because I was used to not seeing enemies and getting tired of tirelessly walking. So instead of walking wondering what's ahead, I soon realized that nothing sneaks up on me and to simply run until enemies appear.

Cut scenes sometimes use in-game models... then some cut scenes have a purple tint because it's likely edited in AfterFX to add particle effects. The cut scenes look different in quality and kills the consistency. Also in the cut scenes that use the in-game engine elements such as tires of vehicles, trees, vegetation,,,, pop in and out.

The mechs you crawl into could have been better and maybe used more... also I wish could ride some of the beasts like you did in GOW2. This is something that would have elevated the gameplay. I love the idea of FPS and vehicles and I'm surprised there wasn't more of this... part 1 had a vehicle (that sucked I know), part 2 had beasts (only partially near the end) and this one had a mech... in which I barely used, plus I have yet to see the mech in the multiplayer (if it even exists).

The first 2 GOWs felt dark... this one is cheezy and I feel it killed the dark feeling of the predecessors. Some of the dialogue is beyond hokey and the queen comes off incredibly over-acted and gives it a less serious feel to it. The queens animations when she talks, her body language is incredibly exaggerated and ridiculous. Ice T makes an appearance and his dialogue is the only dialogue that sounds like he's swore before; whereas, other voice actors in the games drop the "F" bomb all the time and it sounds like they've rarely used it or felt uncomfortable using it. After half way through the game the "F" word and the "S" word are used so much it's gratuitous. Back to Ice T... after your first encounter it's him, the second encounter... I'm pretty sure it's a different voice actor... and either he has a cold or someone is a bad Ice T impersonator.

The multiplayer is much better than the previous 2 games. Some levels, if you turn quick (briefly) left or right... some structures in the game turn blue (like the edges) then it snaps it's texture back. I had fun in the multiplayer... but once you get good it's all run and shotgun... which will give you vertigo because of the constant movement to not get blown to pieces.

Basically it seems the game is trying to appeal to a broader audience and overdoing some stuff to appeal to the existing audience. The game is pretty and has some of the best special effects I've seen in a game. Sun rays, environment art, character design, explosions... best I've seen in a game.

The ending really sucked; whereas, in GOW2 I felt the gameplay near the end was fantastic. The story sucks in general, as most games do, but I wanted more of a grand finale action ending. Play it for sure, then sell it on Amazon when you're done.

I loved Gears in the first 2 games. Plain and simple though, i'm already bored with it. I've been bored with it for a couple of weeks now. All the stuff you have, or are going to hear about "shotguns of war" is totally true. The only way for this game to be fair would be to have everyone camp with sawed offs. One of the main things that got me really pissed was that you can either walk incredibly slow or run crouching down and get motion sickness and therefore spoiling all the action. The enemy were really poorly designed.. Is it now fashionable to make all enemy explode.. kinda spoiled it for me.. Gears of war 3 is a fantastic thriller that will leave you wanting more. The movement in the game is still the same as the last Gears , but makes up for it with the new game mode Beast . The Horde game mode has been changed but for the better now adding more features such as a decoy all the way to a purchasable turret. This also has the potential to shock most Gears fans in the new Campaign mode.

The shooting is still Gears brand of cover shooting that so many games have tried to copy, but the further in that I get in the series the more comfortable it gets. New weapons and the ever present active reload makes you feel pretty skilled in each encounter. Also, Silverbacks are a really cool addition to the universe!

The thing that keeps me coming back to these games isn't really the shooting so much as the clever and unique ideas that they come up with to build the world. From Brumacs to Locust Boats and Airships, it's really neat to see what the developers are going to think of next.

Less darker than the previous instalments in the series, but still violent and badass enough to be a true Gears of War game.

While the gameplay is redefined for the better, with a larger arsenal of weapons and tools to experiment with, the campaign seems like a step-back. The multiplayer is the star of the show for sure, and the addition of Beast Mode is what the series really needed.

If you take it for a brainless game, just for the fun of the action, you'll enjoy it, otherwise it's quite shallow and do not offer a real challenge. The game it's really short, the storytelling seems rushed and you lose all the sympathy you had to use with Marcus and company. I missed some machine using. The sub part, for example, you should drive it, as cars and maybe even motorcycles to get some action and break the liniarity of the game. In other hand, Graphics are amazing and really beautiful. At least, give you some closure for the trilogy. If you are a fan and like to play multi players online, you must have, otherwise, just rent. In a rainy Sunday you might get to end of this game. Although the game will take you back through a period prior to the events of both Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3, it has a variety of improvements that make this the most enjoyable and action-packed campaign yet!

The main protagonist is a young COG by the name of Damon Baird, who should already be very familiar to all Gears fans from being the sidekick to Marcus Fenix, but here in Judgment Baird has a story of his own to tell in a series of flashback sequences used to tell the events leading up to why a small Kilo Squad are being judged in a military COG court. Having taken matters into their own hands and defying all orders to save the world from a new threat, Kilo Squad stand on trial and must face a Colonel Loomis to defend their actions. It is with the Kilo Squad telling their story where the flashback sequences come into play as you relive in-game each part of the Kilo Squads reasoning to Loomis. This is clearly why the title is ‘Judgment’ and you daringly pace through their testimonies putting your life on the line for the greater good or so you believe!

In Gears of War: Judgment, the Kilo Squad is made up of a young team of trained COG army soldiers that are joined in their unanimity to protect themselves and the world from a terrifying threat on humanity. Although Baird is the main man through-out most of the campaign, you will face the attack and defence missions through the eyes of the other Kilo Squad members. This being Augustus “The Cole Train” Cole, the more comical character and another blast from the past games; Sofia Hendrick, a journalist who joined the army after Emergence Day, and Garron Paduck, a Gear Soldier in the COG Army who was previously a Major for another military force. The characters are united by their actions and defend their reasons with justified decisions that you will experience in the campaign, each character presents their own traits and discussion’s with dialogue that is classic Gears of War talk! If you were somewhat nervous about People Can Fly’s input into the Gears of War universe, you need not worry, the gritty war-torn landscapes and accompanying plot lines feel like the heart and soul of the Gears of War: Judgment story-telling and a real “Gears-experience”, it’s definitely a game for the fans as well as fantastic entry title if you’ve never played a Gears of War game before.

Judgment is not just a new story that takes place alongside the events of Emergence Day, but it’s a whole new arsenal of weapons and also a whole new way to play a campaign. The game is broken down into Chapters where each features the Testimony of each member of Kilo Squad; Chapters are also broken down into sections which vary between six to eight and at the start of each section you’ll see a glowing COG Emblem emblazoned on the wall where you will have the option to accept or dismiss a Mission Declassification. These Declassify missions completely turn up the heat with how you are expected to play the campaign by making it increasingly difficult, limiting in ammo, time-based challenges, and impaired vision amongst many other unique gameplay scenarios to test your endurance through-out the Chapter. Successfully completed Declassify Missions within the story will not only earn you extra rewards for both Campaign and Multiplayer, but they uncover critical information relating to the story as well as helping towards your Achievements. Should you inevitably die, or fail challenges another new feature comes to life. In completely taking away the predictability after a death and an enhancement to the challenges you face is the addition of a new Smart Spawn System for Judgment. Having seen this in action I can say that every game from here on in could use this great tool to make your respawns play differently since every spawn changes the type of enemies in play, the timing of their appearance and additionally their locations so that each encounter although in the same battleground feels a little different. It’s a like a new take on the environment so that you’re not complacent and this does add an extra layer of freshness because this is for both Campaign and Multiplayer It really mixes things up a little for the better.

I had hyped myself up in the days and months prior to it's release, watching the E3 demos and teaser trailers over and over again. I am glad to say that I was not wrong. It exceeded my expectations as to how fun it would be. After the slight disappointment of Gears Of War 2, this a return to form for the series and for Epic Games.
The multiplayer is superb, bringing back a higher movement speed and sense of agility and responsiveness found in Gears 1 but sadly lost in Gears 2. The game modes are satisfactory, but I find myself mainly going for Team Deathmatch over everything else. The new ranking system is good, the weapons are more or less balanced despite people saying the sawed-off is overpowered: there are ways to counteract it.
Beast Mode is also a pretty fun experience, giving an opportunity to play as Locust monsters and crush waves of CoG. Certainly, the selection of characters is excellent but I couldn't help but think they didn't need a time limit or only have 12 waves.
Horde Mode is where I spend most of my time on Gears 3 nowadays. The mode has been completely upgraded from Gears 2. Instead of throwing you on a map with no defences against the Locust, Epic have now given the player the ability to build fortifications such as spikes, sentry turrets, gun turrets, decoys and battle-mechs to counteract the Locust Horde's menagerie of monsters. As a result, I would say the difficulty is ramped up and makes it more of a challenge to complete all 50 waves. However, even after those initial 50 waves have been completed, there are still fortifications to upgrade and achievements to earn that will keep players coming back.
I have deliberately left the story till last. As a Gears of War fan, I like to think that I have a good knowledge of the universe outside of the games. I've read the comics and the novels which cover a significant amount of time between each game. Therefore, I understood most of what was going on in Gears Of War 3's campaign. Between Gears 2 and 3, a lot happened. So much so, that three books were written to cover those events. I find the story amazing; with genuine emotional moments cropping up in between intense cinematic action sequences that makes this seem at times, like a blockbuster movie (especially ONE very emotional moment. Ahem ahem) However, I can see how people who haven't taken such an interest in the novels or comics could find this story confusing. I have a few friends who haven't read the books and asked me "Who the **** is Jace?", "Where the hell did Sam come from?" and "Why are they on a boat?"
Gears Of War 3 is a fantastic game in all respects and is worth it's money in both replay value and quality. A game that I will be playing for years.

It's just like GoW2 but with improved multiplayer due to better balancing and dedicated servers to ensure lag-free gameplay. The horde mode is now more deep, with the introduction of money to buy weapons and barricades. However, multiplayer matchmaking doesn't seem to use TrueSkill- a level 11 ends up in a lobby full of level 100s for example. However it's the most brutal an fast-paced online yet. Now it actually works properly. You can level up across all modes and earn medals just like in Halo Reach, making the campaign, co-op modes and competitive Versuses intergrate seemlessly. The campaign is still an epic but it was shorter than I was expecting, and doesn't feel as grand or engaging as Gears 2. All in all, if you're a fan of the series or are looking for a brutal shooter that's very different from others and is good quality this game is most certainly worth getting. The actual gameplay is no different from the previous game and there aren't many additions butit's still a fun shooter. What does degrade the experience slightly is that despite it running on Unreal Engine 3.5- the updated UE3, there are many games which make better use of its graphical capabilities. Sure, Unreal Engine was built for this kind of game but the textures are, without exaggeration- vastly dated. The cutscenes have the worst graphics and feel like they're in 480p rather than full HD whilst the normal gameplay graphics are much more consistent. Overall the essence of Gears is still here. The satisfying sound of headshots with a LongShot, the brutal weapons, including additions like the OneShot and th beasty enemies are all here. The campaign is shorter than I expected and too easy on anything but Insane because you can be revived by the AI. But the Versus is now compatible with bots, there are challenges and XP across all aspects of the game, there's arcade mode and beast mode allowing you to play as locust and take down humans in time. GoW3 feels like GoW2 but sort of "Reachified" by the addition of leveling up in all modes and the huge stat tracking for all modes- even K/D for campaign and number of failed active reloads! The medals, ribbons and collectibles add a lot of replay value and encourage you to take advantage of everything in the game so you get a great variety too. Certainly Gears 3 is the most complete Gears of War game- there's not much more that could've been done to make it bigger. Expand

It's a good finale to the original Gears trilogy and plays exactly how you'd expect a Gears game to play. Whether that is good or bad depends on if you liked the past games because this is more of the same.

Back when Gears 3 was announced and the trailers came out, nothing new really stood out for me. It looked un-appealing and boring. However, playing Gears 3 now I take back everything I ever said bad about it. The campaign is an epic conclusion to the trilogy, and the multiplayer was toned up from Gears 2 providing more game modes, maps and new weapon skins. However the things that blew me away the most was Horde and Beast modes. Beast because who doesn't want to play as a ticker and blow cogs up, or as any locust for that matter, and Horde because they have improved it so much from Gears 2 - now you get cash for killing locust which can be put towards buying barriers, turrets and other improvements for your base. An epic game and an amazing conclusion to the Gears of war trilogy. Expand

I really didn't find this game very fun at all. It functions well, but the campaign is laughably generic. The competitive multiplayer isn't very fun or exciting and requires you to earn unlocks for just about everything. The only part of the game I enjoyed was Beast Mode, an addictive gametype that turns wave based horde mode on its head. Rather than the perfect end to a thrilling series, it seemed like the developers were afraid to take real risks with either the story or the gameplay of Gears 3.

Gears of War 3 is a solid game and likely worthy of the praise it's received. I just happen to think it falls a bit flat.
