It's really tragic that Ubisoft decided to port the grossly inferior Far Cry Instincts back in 2005, which was made for the original Xbox; that game had it's charm, but it was severely handicapped by design as Ubisoft made it for original Xbox hardware. Crytek's masterpiece clearly runs beautifully on the 360, so it's a shame it took this long to release it. Note there's some negative reviews for the PS3 version due to graphical issues, but those do not impact the 360.

Ubisoft has made a few minor tweaks to improve the game, specifically I think they re-balanced the difficultly somewhat, so I'm really enjoying this compared to the original PC game. Most importantly, they didn't mess anything up, as I always felt this game was nearly perfect when it came out in 2004.

So how is the game play? Well this isn't a sand box game with a billion pointless activities and achievements like Far Cry 2 and 3. That said, some of the outdoor levels are so large, they feel a little bit like a a sand box environment, and they normally offer many tactical approaches, so they are non-linear. Even the indoor levels usually give players multiple options on how to approach a battle, which sadly most AAA modern shooters lack. Most importantly, Far Cry levels never feel repetitive, and the combat and enemies keep things fresh. On the topic of things Far Cry does better than modern games, I have to
give mention to just how effective the ballistics model is. Each of the different weapons and grenades has a unique feel and function, so your weapon choice really has an impact on combat, tactics, and ultimately how you approach each objective.

When you consider how many hours of shooting and exploration fun this package offers for only $10, I have to rate this as a 10 out of 10.

Far Cry Classic was ahead of its time. It came out in 2004 and had great graphics and game play. For anybody who hasn't played it they should. It is not an easy game but it is very rewarding and a blast to play. Ten years later and it is still very enjoyable. Outrageous Game!

This is the original Far Cry from 2004. Porting ancient CryEngine 1 code on X360 is a commendable job by the dev. The game still feels what it used to back in 2k4. The graphics are more polished, the gameplay too. The gaps have been filled for eg: Melee is present in this title that wasn't just there in the PC version this is something I really like. 8.8 - Just rating on the game itself. Great for the time, especially the graphics. Inspired many games with its cool tropical environment and fast-paced gameplay. The AI is actually pretty good in the original, as they hide behind objects properly, although they do see through walls somehow at times lol.

Wow.. I Loved this game 10 years ago when I played it on PC. Since I mostly do all my gaming on consoles nowadays, I couldn't wait to play this again when I saw it finally make it in its original form. Its not an HD remaster or anything, which was fine with me.. but I have to say, I don't remember the design being so poor in this game. Right now, I am dealing with an auto save that kicked in when I was in a fire fight, so whenever I start, I immediately get hit by a rocket. The auto save starts the game by the screen fading in, so you're vulnerable without being able to fully see everything. The in game instructions tell you that tapping left bumper switches your grenades.. but makes no mention of needing to be held down to bring up the weapon wheel. It took me a little while to figure this out and left me in the dark on how to use more than just the first 2 weapons I picked up. The AI is smart, but a little too good. It doesn't make sense that enemies that are so far off in the distance you could not see them without using a sniper scope almost always hit you with bullets from ARs even if you're hiding behind trees and plants in a jungle. Enemies also appear out of thin air as well. I still enjoy the game, but it definitely left a mark on how I felt about the game prior to revisiting. After recently enjoying the excellent Blood Dragon and Far Cry 3, its evident the original has not aged well. Expand

One of the worst arcade games I've ever played, honestly. This **** game is so repetitive, so boring and so broken that you want gauge your **** eyes out with a spoon while playing it. How this game has been given 9/10 by professional critics and 10/10 by countless users is beyond comprehension.
I have nothing against the Far Cry franchise as a whole, I love Far Cry 2, 3 and Blood Dragon.

I have nothing against the Far Cry franchise as a whole, I love Far Cry 2, 3 and Blood Dragon. However, I have to admit I never played Far Cry the original, so this this is coming from the genuinely honest opinion of someone who loves previous Far Cry games but hasn't played the original.
So here it is. The first thing you'll notice is this game looks like it came out in 2004 instead of 7 months ago. I know this is just a remastered version of Far Cry 1, but the graphics truly haven't been updated whatsoever. Unacceptable, even for an arcade game, as this is just pure laziness. The second thing you'll notice is that the A.I. is **** extraordinarily retarded and the stealth mechanics are broken. I have lost count of the amount of times I've ran up to an enemy and they've done nothing, ran the other way or just shot the **** wall! And seemingly as soon as you kill one enemy, even if you silently stab them 100s of metres away from the rest, everyone on the map instantly comes after you, thus the game **** up half of what makes other Far Cry games such a gem in the FPS genre: functional stealth. Seriously, the A.I. in this game is utterly broken and possibly the worst I've ever seen in a game since Brink. Even worse there are huge difficulty spikes at random points in the game where the A.I. turns from completely defective to unfairly accurate, shooting you with perfect pixel accuracy while you're behind cover from miles away.
Thirdly, the physics in this game are crap. Driving any vehicle feels like floating on a pocket of air and running into enemies feels oddly non-impactful. The whole experience feels half-assed and lacklustre. On top of that the pacing is dreadful, making the game excruciatingly boring for hours and the story is confusing. You won't ever know what the hell is happening!
In conclusion Far Cry Classic is dreadfully lazy and nothing like the other Far Cry games. It is easily one of the worst arcade games out there right now and my pick for the 2nd worst game of 2014 (out of what I've played) with Rambo in 1st place.

One of the worst games I have ever played. And I have played a LOT of games. You are encouraged to use stealth, but the AI chars will spot you a mile away, long before you see them even if they are out in the open. They also hit you very easily even though at that distance you will have much difficulty hitting them in return.

This is a joke, right? Like, it's supposed to be a super corny Bond spoof? If not: this is an abhorrent waste of time. If so, it's a fun and stupid little game to fool around with. I'm going to give it a 30% because I can't tell which it is, and having to choose between a 60% and a 10% just doesn't seem fair. Objectively: there is fun to be had in this game. Objectively: there is fun to be had in this game. However, it's sloppy, silly, and irritating throughout. The voice acting (save for Doyle) is the worst I've ever heard in a video game which is why I think it absolutely has to be a parody. Even down to the finale which takes place in a volcano with a German villain with no understandable motivation, it reeks of parody but that's also why I had some fun with it. This game is funny, but only because you can laugh at it. It's such a poor experience if you take it seriously and I guarantee that if you expect anything genuinely good from this, you'll be drowning in frustration. Did I mention the voice acting? I did? Oh. Well, I have more to say. From the protagonist to the antagonist's soldiers, everybody sounds like a Stoner Bro, jus'... like....woahhhh...you know? Man... such...*excellent*...work, bro. I just... you know? Man... It was incredibly annoying until I thought it might be a spoof and that idea is the only thing that kept me going. Thank god the rest of the series is very fond in my memories. Expand

Fantastic to see old school on X360 too apart from PS3. Even if the game is 10 years old, it does not kill the feeling of what a true FPS should be. I actually bought both PS3 and X360 versions, ;)

I did not play the original Far Cry, but I played in almost all subsequent parts. And each part after 3 I was only tormented. And he got a mixture of Far Cry and Half Life. Seriously, linear levels resemble the creation of Valve. And that's great. Yes, the remaster turned out to be average in quality, in fact it is a port of the PC version of the game for Xbox360. But such linear games (it sounds funny, because in 2004 this game world was considered open) are not enough for the modern gaming society. And yes, Far Cry is the best thing Crytek did (Crysis 2 not counting). Expand

Far Cry Classic exhibits many of the ideas that came to define the series, but this decade-old shooter doesn't hold up very well thanks to antiquated design and a spotty porting job. [May 2014, p.82]
