Very immersive, very unforgiving in so many ways and it can be rather repetitive. MGS5 was probably inspired by this and some locations here resemble those of MGS5. I find that this game is best played in short sessions and with a defined objective in mind. Stealth camo helps alot, as do the sniper riffles and the heavier armed vehicle of the Fortunes DLC.

The respawning enemy outposts are a chore to deal with, but at least all are very different from one another. Additionally, most outposts and larger bases are very nice looking and well designed.

The weapon variety is adequate, as is the power of each weapon. The malaria affliction has a tendency to strike during the worst moments possible and the weapons fail you when you need them the most. Basically, Far Cry 2 can indeed be summarized as : "You go to perform a mission, and it goes wrong".

Even so, rather than leaving in anger or frustation, there is something about this game that has you trying again, doing your best and striving to complete the objectives, even when it is clear that nothing went as you had originally planned it. Exploring every corner of the map, be it for diamonds, hidden features or the gorgeous vistas is fun as well. I wish there were african predators such as lions, leopards and crocodiles, but the game is difficult without those already.

Despite its age, the game graphics and physics are something else, putting "modern" titles to shame, and making some newer games look and play mediocre at best. Definitely not easy to get into, and not for everyone, but worth a shot for the realistic and hopeless style that the developers went for.

The one thing i liked was how most missions give you two ways do them and require careful planning and a vast array of weapons to do them with. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how much you plan due to the ai of enemies spotting you through buildings and always knowing where you are even if you can't see them through the brush. All the hassles in this game are not worth it to finish the mediocre story. This game had great ideas that were all horribly implemented and lead to a tedious unfulfilling experience. Expand

Gameplay directed at realism gets tired after 1.5-2 hours. And it's not about him, but how he's implemented. A disgusting color palette that looks even worse with a blur of graphics on the Xbox360. And most importantly, this is the final mission. After her, you understand that the protagonist of Far Cry 2 is the most boring and useless character in the gaming industry. The ending in general simply breaks off an already empty plot. Just the worst game I played among the games of the 7th generation of consoles. The game almost killed the Far Cry series. Expand

At the time of the release, the graphics was quite good on this game. There is some cool mechanics here that was way ahead of its time, like shooting branches of trees, and setting fire to the grass never feels more rampant. And you also got guns that jams up, and even breaks apart totally in the middle of a firefight. Maybe the devs was far too optimistic in terms of realism.

At the time of the release, the graphics was quite good on this game. And you also got guns that jams up, and even breaks apart totally in the middle of a firefight. Maybe the devs was far too optimistic in terms of realism.
You start the game having a Malaria fever which will hunt you for the majority of the game. Every now and then you have to pop a pill to supress the fever and keep you going. If you run out, you have to take a small side mission to get more pills. These affects gameplay a little, and can be annoying at times.

There is a story in this game, You hunt an arms dealer called "The Jackal" but its story direction is almost immediately fragmented as soon as you start the game. You find yourself in the middle of a war between two factions, These two factions are pitted against each other towards a 3rd mercenary group that you ally up against trying to intervene them both . You never take sides in this war, and you will find yourself knocking on both doors of the factions. If you have seen a movie called Last Man Standing from 1996 with Bruce Willis, you will get the idea what i am talking about.
Often you can handle the mission two ways, straight on, or with your AI buddies.
The AI buddies are a neat and well executed part of the game. You meet them as you progress. Often they will interact and call you before a main-mission where they offer to execute mission in a different direction.
The AI can also jump in and revive you if you go Solo and die during any mission.
Another cool and realistic thing about AI. They too can get wounded and you have a choice to revive or leave them there to die. If you choose the latter, and he dies, he dies for good. Thats it. You will never see him again. So take care of your buddies.
You can also undertake assassination missions to to break away from the faction one. You find these at various radio towers spread around. They usually gives you an mission to go to somewhere and kill someone.

The developers designed this game to have the gamer struggle for most part. But it can get tedious at times while you progress.
To mention the worst of them. Around the sandbox map there are several guard post scattered around. all tied up to sectorisation. Meaning, after you kill all enemy forces, as soon as you leave the area, the guard post will reset and enemies respawn.
Also the AI is pretty naff and dumb in this game. Soldier can just shoot at you and suddenly run around doing nothing. Also, i never played a game with such aggressive opposing enemies as this game. Everyone and their mother will go at you if they spot you. You pass by any oncoming traffic and they will turn and chase you down every time.
The guard posts i mention, often just driving trough the bulletstorm is sometimes impossible. You are damned that most of them have 2 guards ready to jump in a gun mounted jeep as soon as you pass. And they will NEVER stop chasing you until you are shot to bits. Every checkpoint you pass, you most likely HAVE to kill them off to move on alive.

The majority of the time in this game is spent behind the wheel going from A (contractors) to B (assassination target) And its just that. There are fast travel bus stops. but they are too few

There are two major maps in this game. Halfway trough you get to start at a brand new map to explore. Either you will do a huge sigh and carry on or burn your copy of the game.

The game does take time to finish. And if you do, you will most likely vow to never play this game again.

In true Ubisoft style, there are collectibles in form of diamond cases to collect. There are over 220 cases to look up (someone at Ubisoft is really a sadist)
Diamonds are the main currency in the game. You use them to buy and upgrade weapons at the arms dealer. To expand the selection, you can take missions from the vendor. These are always; go to a part of the map where a convoy drive around in circle and blow it up.
Funny enough, the game gets more stable and a little more fun when you get better guns.
Guns bought at arms dealers also are in excellent condition. but they do degrade too over time, so come back to the arms dealer to switch out your old shooters for new fresh ones every now and then.

The game could have been something. But overall it lacks excitement to move on with its too linear and non existent story line that weighs the game down

Way ahead of its time on game mechanic, but dull and tedious to play overall. Far Cry 2 remains a double edged sword by todays standards.

The open world gameplay still seems fun, even though at least initially missions are given to you in a linear fashion, and the shooting action is still relatively good when compared to more recent FPS games. Graphics and audio are definitely previous gen but still look good.

Unfortunately my playthrough revealed multiple bugs that did not allow me to complete missions or that required restoring an older save and repeating to try and trigger the mission to complete. I do not think I ever experienced this with the PC version, and not sure if this was an issue originally on the Xbox 360 so it could just be an issue with the backwards compatible version. Not sure but either way it makes the game game breakingly unplayable.

If you do not experience these game breaking bugs then the game would still be worth a go but my rating reflects my personal experience with the game and bugs.

    4 HOURS IN:
While I appreciated the open-world addition to this series, as well as increased realism, it became quite tedious. By biggest problems with the first game was that it was just over-the-top ridiculous (and stupid) but this one is the exact opposite… and because of that this game is slow. You get malaria, and have to take pills. Your gun jams, and disrupts firefights. The map isn’t that big but your methods of transportation are slow and unreliable and often require maintenance just to keep rolling. It takes 50 inaccurately sprayed bullets to wound enemies, and sometimes they’ll get up off the ground and keep shooting after you think they’ve been killed. It’s just a chore to get across the map because you’ll not only move slow, but get stopped by antagonistic AI that’ll slow you down even more. To get missions, you have to go to select areas and then as soon as you accept them, your “buddies” interrupt your traveling to offer you another quest. This only happens when you accept a new quest…which was quite frustrating.

    10 HOURS IN:
I’m about 10 hours into the game and really just trying to finish it as fast as possible. I’ve looked up the mission list so that I have a checklist but all of the missions I’ve been doing for the last 5 hours have been the same: go into town, accept a mission, leave the town, kill a person, come back into town, repeat. The entire game seems to be based around the cease-fire zone representing the “home base” and then venturing out of town to act as a hitman. My experience can be explained as not just travel from A to B but: A to B to A to C to A to D to A to E to A to F to A to G to A to G to A… and so on. It’s annoying and exhausting especially because traveling around this map (I’ve unlocked a southern extension which has doubled the total map size) is quite troublesome. Driving without interruption is impossible as trigger-happy fools will shoot you before even checking to see if you’re on their side or not.

Safe to say, I don’t enjoy playing this game. Between malaria, guns jamming, repetitive missions, obstacle-course map, and other annoying mechanics, I don’t see how the rest of the game could save my enjoyment but I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and hold off on selecting a rating until I actually beat the game. This is a huge test of patience.

    UPON COMPLETION:
Okay, I beat it literally seconds ago. I’m not hanging around to do a single optional/side/bonus quest or anything, especially including the diamond/achievement hunting… I’d love to know how long it took me to beat it but I’m having to sit through the longest credits in the world and I can’t skip them (not helping my rating). I guess, now that I’m done, I can give my final thoughts. I’m not a fan of this game. It’s not bad by any means but the repetitive nature of the missions paired with the inability to traverse the map easily took all of the fun out of playing it hour after hour. In theory, this game is amazing. I mean, the realism is just off the charts but that’s what really ended up hurting how enjoyable it was to me in the end. I can’t see myself going back to play this game for any reason. I almost gave up on it a second time but I’m glad I pulled through because I can wipe my hands of this over-corrective effort and move onto Far Cry 3 which is one that I’ve considered one of my all-time favorites since 2012 but haven’t played since then.

This game .. sucked.. lol. Well the first Farcry was good but Farcry 2 was one of the worst games i've ever played. The AI is terrible but the graphics are good. I mean what happened to our mini map?? It's like a gigantic map you need to hold with two hands!! It was not worth buying and i shall never buy another Farcry game until i know it's good.

The graphics, for being released in 2008 were at an amazing standard. Along with the immersive no HUD experience, it made you feel like you were actually sneaking through the underbrush up to an enemy encampment in Africa yourself. Especially if you played with headphones on you can even hear bugs buzzing around your characters head. Collecting the diamond briefcases scattered across the world in order to purchase weapons and upgrades was also a nice addition to the game.

However even though Far Cry 2 did a lot of things well I still have some negatives to point out. The story or lack there of was uninteresting and lacked detail. It barely gave you enough information for each mission especially the buddy side quests and assassination missions. In the in game menu/journal it did provide a detailed description of the mission, however it would have been nice for the NPC's to say more then they did about why they were sending you to collect this or kill that person. And the ending of the game left much to be desired. Another issue was the speed of which the enemies respawned at the many outposts scattered across the map. You could stealthily clear out a guard post in the aim to get to a mission location only to come back 2 minutes later and have to do the same fight again. Especially eliminating certain outposts that you had to pass through numerous times became quite annoying. My last negative for this game is that the missions get repetitive, especially the side content.

My playthrough spanned across 23 hours. I completed every mission in the north map (Leboa Seko) including all the buddy side missions. But i couldn't bring myself to do them in the south map as they were rather repetitive and offered no incentive for completing them. I also collected every diamond briefcase and jackal tape.

I would recommend Far Cry 2 to anyone looking for an immersive FPS experience.I give Far Cry 2 an 8/10.

Fun game, this one here is. I love this game world, even more than 3. It has a few faults like nonexistant stealth and slightly choppy controls, but the things it does right far outweigh the negatives. If they took a few of the improvements they made in 3 like the hunting and collectibles and brought them back to this one I would say this would be my favorite shooter of all time.

i give the game a 1 being nice

    Where to start?
    - The graphics are poor and its hard to see enemies and getting surrounded happens often
-Way too many spawned enemy vehicles and enemies that's repetitive and slows down mission progress -Vehicles drive weird and break down all the time making you want to walk but that's even more boring -There isn't anything to ACTUALLY DO in the world so the sandbox thing is kind

-There isn't anything to ACTUALLY DO in the world so the sandbox thing is kind of pointless
-It isn't even sandbox really cause places are closed off and exploration is discouraged as you can't choose a quest; its deceptively linear
    - Even if you wanted to to explore, you CANT, because of the ridiculous amount of angry enemies that spawn at a god awful rate discussed earlier

I guess the one pro I would give it is the weapons, upgrading of weapons, and the natural deterioration of weapons (although also unrealistically quick in falling apart)

    Avoid this

While the gameplay at heart is good the open world is excellent and the graphics is well done but the story is not there there is no fast travel and that is so annoying the save pits are really just annoying the guns jam you get malaria and there are respawing enemies in outposts even after liberating its good but not any more

Far Cry 2's biggest sins isn't one of the forgettable and lame story, but rather on its gameplay. It's not that it doesn't deliver, but rather it delivers TOO much. Not only is it massive, but it has a variety of locations such as deserts, savannas, and even tropical forests. The biggest drawback about the world is traveling. The vehicle controls aren't the best but what irks me most is the fact I have to do it all the time. It doesn't help the guard posts keep res[awning, hindering me from my destination. It feels like padding in a tedious way. However everything else beyond that is well done. Searching for diamonds is always worth it, and the gunplay feels very tight and responsive. I could even bear with the realism if the weapon degrading didn't happen too quick. It took me 28 hours to complete along with optional sidequests. The new map editor puts Halo's forge to shame. I spent a chunk of time creating wonderful maps to play online. All in all, Far Cry 2 does a wonderful job in immersing me. Gameplay overall was solid though the annoyances keep it from becoming something much greater. Expand

Save for a completely nonexistent story and a few forgettable maps, "Far Cry 2" is a mostly enjoyable open-world shooter with a breadth of hilarious gameplay tweaks.

In terms of game play I absolutely hated this game, the quick travel mechanics almost useless leaving you to spend more time travelling to and from locations then actually engaging in any meaningful game play or plot development, enemies seem to randomly spawn and relentlessly pursue you which wasn't so bad.. the first 100 times. Gameplay and objectives were woefully repetitive and whilst I was initially excited I found myself rapidly bored and aggravated after time and time again spending so much time travelling to a destination only to have enemies randomly spawn behind me, some how know exactly where you are even if you use your knife and cause you to re-spawn somewhere so you can enjoy more mindless travelling. The campaign is easily the worst thing about this game. Lost interest many times with it. The world map is really big, witch is a great thing. However its such a pain in the ass to travel their, due to the lack if fast travel stations. Tons of sides missions witch is good but seem way too much each other, same with the main missions. Chracters are not intereating at all and they usally end up dying anyway. Save system in this game is really annoying and wish it was auto save instead of finding this place to save your witch sometimes takes ages to get to one, so you might die trying on hard diffuculy. However the things they do a really good job at is realisim and story. Story was good and wad kinda interesting how it it all ended. Now I don't really judge gamfes for realisim, but man i'm so impresed with it, even intho its 2013 and we have gotten furder with games since then. Gund in poor condiction jam, you need to take pills because you got malerea in the start of the game, witch you may need to take when your swiming, in combat, or when you are talking to someone. Fire spread is great as well, with the fire looking great as well. Lets finally talk about the multiplayer.Really good, hard to find a game these days but when you do its great fun. With more game types then Far Cry 3's multiplayer, and with vehicle s in this multiplayer unlike 3's. Map editor is also really good if you like to mess around or make awesome maps. Overall its an okay game witch is ruined by the bad campaign, but the other features are really good. Far Cry 2 6.4/10. Expand

Far Cry 2 was so close to being a good game but then went and implemented something that ruined it, much like modern day Sonic console games. It looks like this game is destined to be a classic...but not so fast. While the multiplayer aspect is safe, the single player sadly isn't. Weapons jam consistently and during gunfights; this is incredibly aggravating and unnecessary. Cars damage far too easily and constantly require repair, enemies somehow see you wherever you are and seemingly always do more damage to you than you do to them. Repetition is another thing, the storyline is too scared to vary things, even just a little. Every time you start a mission objective, you get a call from an ally to complete a separate objective and get rewarded, rinse and repeat. The game feels rushed as a result and lacks tuning. Sure it does have the basis of a great quality game but that's as far as it goes unfortunately.

    Graphics: 9/10
    Gameplay: 5/10
    Features: 8/10

Far Cry 2 tries too hard to be realistic and it suffers as a result (so will the player). Foundations of a truly fantastic game remain only foundations thanks to poorly implemented gameplay mechanics.

  1. In order to truly appreciate it, you’ll have to look past all the monotonous traveling and the repetitive missions and get sucked in to the immersive world that Ubisoft Montreal has created.

Far Cry 2 is this year's equivalent of Assassin's Creed... when it comes to enveloping the player in exotic sights and sounds, Ubisoft has absolutely nailed it. [Issue # 40]

A challenging and technically impresive FPS set in gorgeous but treacherous surroundings...It's one of the most engaging shooters we've played for ages. [Dec 2008, p.67]
