So glad Blizzard went to the console with D3. I've been playing it since yesterday and so far, I LOVE IT. The only problem I have with it is the inventory. While having nice combat and sound, the game fails at anything else. The itemization is very weak and character customization is non-existant, paired with a story that is an insult to all Diablo fans (games nad books).

Horrible game, wouldn't advice to buy it.

I'm actually really surprised at how much work Blizzard put into the console version of this game. A lot of aspects in D3 have been reworked from the pc version to make game feels native to the consoles and gamepad controls.

I'm actually really surprised at how much work Blizzard put into the console version of this game. A lot of aspects in D3 have been reworked from the pc version to make game feels native to the consoles and gamepad controls.

The much talked about change from the pc version are the addition of a local coop mode and the removal of a constant online requirement and auction house. But Blizzard was nice enough to bring back LAN capability as well, something that was obviously not possible with the online requirement of the pc version.

Among other changes, instead of controlling player character via mouse clicks ala RTS fashion, player now has direct control over the character. Blizzard also added a fairly responsive dodge move that is mapped to right analog stick. As a result, fights are a lot more arcade-y (in a good way) and you feel more involved in the thick of it. The combat now resemble something like a fighter where you zoom in to deliver the hits and evade out of the way of any enemy attacks as oppose to standing toe-to-toe with baddies and hacking it out like traditional Diablo combat (of course you can still play D3 like that but the evade feature just adds to your combat repertoire). The camera and FOV are also closer to the action compared to the pc version, partly for technical reason and partly to emphasize the action more.

To accommodate for speedier play and lack of mouse control, looting is now automatic for gold and bodies; player walk over to collect gold and check loot on bodies. That's something I personally really like. You still have to press buttons for item pickups. Blizzard also introduced a quick inventory management system that allows players to quickly compare, equip and drop items without pausing and going into the inventory screen. You just press up on the D-pad and recent picked up items are displayed relative to your current setup with the choice to equip or drop. This is obviously added for local 4 players but I also found it to be very useful for on the fly loot management in SP. Inventory has been adjusted for console control as well, but that's one change that's not necessarily for the better as I still prefer having simplicity of mouse drag and drop for inventory management.

Speaking of items, loot drops have been massively adjusted for the console version. One of the many complaints about the pc version is how many junk items there are in game. According to Blizzard, they've addressed this by scaling back the rate at which items are dropped but have made the items more "useful" in general. And to their credit, I have noticed A LOT less item drops compare to the pc version during my playthrough of the 360 version. Rumor is Blizzard will be making a similar adjustment to the pc version in an upcoming patch.

Due to the limitations of the aging hardware, there are some expected technical compromises with the console version. The visual fidelity is scaled back compared to the pc version and the resolution is native sub-720p to maintain a steady 50-60 framerate. It's jarring at first especially if you are used to the much higher resolution of the pc version but once you get going that's quickly forgotten (at least for me it was).

I don't know where I have been in the world of gaming? But Diablo 3 is my first foray into the Diablo series. It has been a game that has just passed me by, for some reason. I think I thought it was an RTS type game so I just dismissed it out of hand. I bought it mainly because there was a lack of things to buy on console. It was not what I expected at all. It's like a mini-MMORPG, if such a game type exists, and a lot of fun. Interspersed with some jaw dropping cut-scenes that threads the story together magnificently. I haven't put it down since I got it. I have just trounced Diablo (on easy, because I am very lame) as a Barbarian. Now looking to play a little harder and try the other classes. In retrospect, it has probably passed me by because it was a PC game (spits twice and crosses himself). I had major issues with PC games, graphics cards and all sorts problems hence the reason I jumped ship to consoles.

I have to say my gaming mojo, was on a downer I was even thinking about going back to PC gaming (spits twice and crosses himself). All the business about console wars, revelation after revelation. It was just getting me down. But Diablo 3 made me realise why I like games. It was a wonderful escape and immersion into a well crafted world. It works well on a console, even though the UI is a bit fiddly on times. Just kind of goes to show, you aren't limited by the number of buttons you have on a controller you are only limited by lack of imagination. No such problem with this game, love it and highly recommend it to everybody.

The PC version ofDiablo 3 has undergone multiple revisions including making inferno easier, adding legendaries, increasing magic/gold find caps, and adding monster power to give that extra level of difficulty.

The console version (this review focuses on the PS3 version) is a mixed bag, which I will outline below.

    Online vs. oflfine:
One of the most frustrating features of PC diablo 3 was the online requirements. I have been fortunate to say the least I managed a hardcore demon hunter to paragon 83 without disconnects. However, prior to that there was many deaths due to login errors and disconnects.

The console version solves this completely by introducing offline mode. It's one of the strongest features that would influence a PC owner to have this game on console.

To go along with this, there is a new co-op mode which allows up to 4 players to game at once from the same screen, another great perk. The caviat to this is that 1 person gets access to the stash (whoever the account owner is for PSN), and the other characters do not get access to some exclusive items items (infernal helm IS included for all guest characters).

The co op has some downfalls. If a character seperates from the pack, they get ported to the group. This is potentially a bad idea as it limits tactics for kiting and can get someone killed easily with certain enemies/affixes.

Also, inventory pauses the game for everyone and only 1 person can use it at a time.

There is an online mode to the game with no auction house. This time around, what you find/trade is what makes your character.

    Loot changes
The console version has something the PC doesn't: more efficient upgrade/looting system. This is something PC owners have waited for since release, and it's a bit of a slap in the face to see the console get it first. However, it's a big improvement to the game as well and with the monster power implemented into the console version already, you can truly optimize your farming methods for the best loot and constantly search for a better upgrade.

    Camera and graphics
I won't give my own opnions for the camera, but know it is very zoomed out for the gameplay changes. The HUD is very small even with 2 players (I play on a 46" HDTV) and honestly it's difficulty to see cooldowns clearly. The resolution is very diminshed form the PC version (720p on PS3) and the graphics have been "optimzied" for console. It's a big step down from the PC version. Interestingly enough, there's certain areas that lag/studder on offline mode with minimal enemies on screen, yet when the screen is loaded with enemies it runs fine. Hopefully this gets addressed.

    Gameplay
Perhaps the biggest change to D3 on console is the gameplay. Point and click becomes joystick move and dodge. It's a refreshing change to the way the game is played, I'll admit. It adds a new level of tactics. Another big reason someone may want to buy it for the console.

In summary, D3 made some improvements in looting over PC version and changed the gameplay enough to make it fresh for previous PC owners as well as took away the auction house to allow players to actually play to get gear upgrades. However, the cost is diminished visuals, limited co op with frequent interruptions for inventory/gear optimization and limited guest features for co op play

No online DRM and auction house. This is the version which should have been released a year ago. It's clear that D3 will never be the game its predecessor was, but it remains a solid and entertaining ride for the 12 hours or so it takes to complete it on the most basic of difficulty levels. Whether you choose to replay it... really depends on the individual.

Graphically the game looks very good. Depending on your rig it could look better or worse. Better in my case. I would guess it runs at a native 720p or there around. The game runs at a very smooth 60fps. I did not notice any hiccups or screen tearing that I have heard others experience.
There is a little but more loading time that the PC. I did install it to my HDD. I would say 10-20 seconds.

The UI navigation is a bit awkward at first but after a few hours of playing you will wiz right through it.
Luckily there is a quick equip button as you play to instantly see if an item is an upgrade or a downgrade. Pressing the D-pad up activates it and pressing it up or down again scrolls through your inventory. Once again. It will take some time for this to feel natural. When it does it feels very organic.

The online play is excellent. Having voice chat to communicate with your teammates it invaluable. Makes playing go very smooth. I was able to find games instantly with the quick match option.

The biggest difference between this version and the PC would be the absence of the Auction House.

If you have it on PC probably not worth the investment. If not. Absolutely a must have on the console!

So when I finally saw the release for the X360 I was ecstatic. Even if it wasn't good, it would art least warm my nostalgia for my D2 playing days.

To my surprise, I utterly love Diablo 3. I honestly do not get all the criticism, but to each his own I guess.

If D3 had a flaw, it is that it rehashes almost everything from D2 & D1. But how is this a bad thing? I played D2 & D1 to death, and still love them. On it's own it isn't as good as Diablo 2, but I don't see how anyone could improve on it. Also, I'm surprised at how well D3 handles on the console.

In game graphics aren't a huge leap from D2 but detailed and different enough to not call it dated. The cut scenes are just superb, I can understand that the PC elite might not care too much, but this level of detail, on a 360 is fantastic.

Gameplay is almost identical to Diablo 2. It has been simplified a bit, but perhaps that is better as I did find D2 was a little needlessly complex at times. Regardless, it works and the game is just as enjoyable as D2.

Story & Narrative are exactly what you would expect from a Diablo game. The story continues flawlessly and the character developed nicely. I really love how care and attention went into the personalities of each of the classes.

    Overall:
Diablo 3 is perhaps a new favorite on this generation of consoles. It is not as good as Diablo 2 and the tech behind it can be seen as a little dated, but this doesn't matter to ME. I loved it and I can not wait for the expansion.

This change alone makes Diablo III on console a better experience than the PC version, since the removal of the auction house makes for better all around loot drops, as well as more frequent loot drops for your given class. Other than that, it's practically the same game, so let's go through a quick rundown of how it stacks up on old hardware.

First of all, the story and presentation. It's kind of a mixed bag here. The plot is full of cliches and predictable moments you see coming from a mile away. In game cinematics are laughable and embarassing. Voice acting is similarly hilarious for most characters. As far as visuals, there are some great looking, artistically defined environments, and some terribly bland, cookie cutter environments. Diablo III on the 360 looks good and runs well most of the time, but the framerate can drop in heavy combat, with the effects system culling certain effects to keep the game running somewhat smoothly. Music in this game is for the most part bland and forgettable, with some awful tracks (especially in Act II) here and there. The CG cinematics are basically the only reason to care about the story or plot progression in any way, and there are too few of them. As for in game menus and UI, I liked the organization of the PC menus and interface more. On consoles, cooldowns on skills can be hard to make out, and I don't like the placement of the map. Other than that, controls have been mapped to a controller in a very smart and fluid way.

Now the gameplay. Diablo III feels like it was made for consoles at its outset, and now that I've played it on consoles, I can reaffirm this statement. Diablo III has mostly forgettable classes that don't really evolve in fun ways until you hit level 30. Leveling up entails earning new runes and skills that you can combine to create versatile builds to crush monsters with. The problem is that half of the skills for any given character are flat out useless or don't have a place in later difficulties where long cooldowns or short burst skills can't fill the gaps where monsters are hitting you for three times your health. In order to curb this problem for newer or unfamiliar people, the loot has been scaled significantly. By the time I was partway through inferno, my witch doctor was dealing over 250k DPS with super life steal and movement speed gear, and this is without an auction house to weed out the bad gear. As a result, the game became quite easy for me, even in co-op on Master difficulty Inferno. Bosses died at rates I never thought possible, some of them before they even finished their dialogue at the start of the battle. On the bright side, managing mobs and elites was much more fun, as I had the freedom to use unorthodox builds with my gear to fill the gaps. The supercharged loot drops make crafting weapons and armor practically worthless, even though crafting has been tweaked to give stats relevant to your characters prime attributes. You will simply never craft or buy anything as good as what you can scavenge from the field.

The worst part of diablo is easily the environments. Dungeons are either short and bland, or long and monotonous, with very few variations. Overworld areas have the same layout every time, just with randomly arranged dungeon entrances that are very frustrating to those who commit layouts to memory. Act IV's levels are utterly pathetic, with everything else save for most of Act I and parts of II and III being mostly bland.

The addition of a sub-difficulty setting is a good thing, so when you feel like speedrunning or taking it easy you can simply drop the difficulty for any given mode down. The flipside is that Diablo III on consoles is way too forgiving and ultimately too easy to hold your interest for long. Playing new characters can feel fresh depending on the switch, and the addition of supercharged loot drops as well as sub-difficulties makes leveling feel like less of a grind, but the quality of the base game is so spotty that you'll probably be turned off by the time you've done everything you could for your first character.

In summary, Diablo III on console is a mixed bag. While it's fun to hop on your Xbox and slam some co-op with your buddies, Diablo III is simply an unpolished, unfinished feeling game that probably won't hold your interest for much longer than a couple of weeks. The story is utterly forgettable, the locales and dungeons are poorly designed with few (and frustrating) variations, and the boss fights are entirely pitiful, but this doesn't make the hacking and plundering inbetween any less fun. If you enjoy being rewarded very handsomely for making gibs out of anything and everything with your friends, Diablo III will satiate your desires for a couple of weeks.

A lot better than the PC version and has a lot of bad features removed and replaced with good ones, however the loot is still boring and the classes still don't feel like they level correctly.

A conversion that is almost too good to be true. Diablo III is moving past its previous mistakes and removes the game-breaking auction house that made PC players suffer through its charts. [Issue#234]

Diablo III is a better game on consoles. Gamepad controls lack precision a bit, but on the other hand this version does a better job at conveying the most important thing in the series – the euphoria associated with looting. [CD-Action 11/2013, p.68]

It's one of the best local and online co-op games available on 360. [Issue#103, p.77]
