pros: excellent atmosphere, creepy monsters and a interesting way to kill them, satisfying weapons
cons: a bit predictable at times, too reliant on jumpscares, ammo is to plentifull (on normal anyways)
overall enjoyable survival horror game and a must play for fans of the aliens franchise. RIP Visceral.

A beautifully atmospheric game, but the reliance on jump scares killed my enjoyment many times.

The, 'huh wonder if some thing is going to jump out of that obvious grate' feeling pops up constantly, yet it still made me jump as fast moving objects tend to do for me, not so much fear as adrenaline.

I would have preferred more sinking horror and less of a surprise fest.

9/10 = Amazing = A Great Survival horror game only beaten now only by it's own successor and Resident Evil 4 (which IS the best). A bit too predictable at times though. Any time a necromorph is on the floor expect it to attack you.

It's really rare to get a game which makes you jump out of your seat SEVERAL of times. I constantly found myself doing this. This game holds one of the most atmospheric environments ever seen in a video game and is a truly remarkable game with a great story tied up to it.

I'm unhappy to state that I'm glad I waited. The game starts off very promising, the graphics are gorgeous and the sound and atmosphere were incredible. I was really enjoying the game for the first hour or so but then the problems began to occur. Firstly the excellent graphics are witnessed less and less as you progress as the game starts taking on the murky corridor design and everything seems to be all one colour. The game doesn't seem to know how to balance itself (Normal Difficulty) in some sections it seems absurdly easy with ammo aplenty and enemies evenly spread out, but in far too many places all the loot from enemies and chests becomes money or ammo for weapons you don't posses and to add salt to the wound this is when the game decides to throw large quantities of enemies at you that would be difficult to kill even if you had full health and ammo. The fear factor for the game loses it's very clever suspenseful edge at the same points where enemies keep jumping out from vents and corners that was done far too many times in DOOM 3. The anti gravity sections are interesting but the game doesn't always want to let you jump accordingly which can be very frustrating in the timed sections where it doesn't want to allow you to walk into areas with oxygen. I find it hard to not like Dead Space but it seems to want me to hate it. What was good at the beginning slowly degrades and the objectives become go to location press button/ pick something up and backtrack. Expand

The graphics are good. The atmosphere of the game is alright. Other than that, this game is horribly irritating and repetitive. The controls are godawful and slow for the PC, and I'm not a fan of the whole "third-person-over-the-shoulder" view. Some of the voice acting is pretty bad as well. Maybe the controls are better for the 360, but I'm not about to find out anytime soon.

Dead Space is a rare, fully satisfying single-player only experience. One that nails the action-horror gameplay, if not so much the actual horror. It's actually not a scary game. Even with all of it's dark corridors and grotesque monsters I never found anything here that gave me any sort of fright.

That may be a big disappointment for the horror enthusiast looking for the next thing that will scare them out of their pants, but there are still plenty of reasons to play it. For starters they nailed the atmosphere. The sense of loneliness and desperation complement the gameplay well. The sound is phenomenal and the graphics have aged remarkably well. The story doesn't evolve too much beyond it's "stranded and looking for a way out" setup, but there bits that hint at a larger mythology and what few characters there are were very well written.

When it comes to the gameplay this is some of the most satisfying action I've experienced from the horror genre. The gunplay feels great and your limited resources mean that it always feels like you're just barely scraping by. There are enough items scattered around to keep you going to the next checkpoint, but conserving your supplies is still necessary for survival.

New enemies are introduced at a steady pace. The fact that you have to target and remove their limbs in order to actually kill them means these are more than just generic bullet sponges. Add in some special powers that tie into some great puzzles and you have an experience that stays fresh and tense all the way through.

The only flaw I can find with the gameplay would be the mobility, or lack thereof. Your character "Isaac" isn't the fastest or most agile dude. This isn't a problem most of the time because you don't deal with too many enemies at once. However when the action gets more crowded and these surprisingly fast enemies have you cornered, you'll find yourself wishing Isaac would pick up the pace and get out of the way. A simple dodge-roll would have gone a long way.

For what it lacks in actual horror, it makes up for with a well-paced story and mostly excellent gameplay. It might not be scary and it does have it's frustrating moments, but for the most part this is an excellent game. One with a fairly decent length (I beat it in a little over 8 hours) and high replay value. Dead Space is worth your time, horror fan or not.

The sequel doesn't even try to hide what's going to happen, and pacing has been thrown out the window to make for a more "epic" experience. At the start, even though the necros have literally JUST broke out, one of the more bulky creatures makes a very early appearance, even though there would not have been nearly enough time for it to have grown (or died). I'm never sure which it is, with necros.

Compare that to the first game, which was a constant remix of tried and true horror techniques, leaving me more afraid of not the technique itself, but always wondering when it would finally arrive. For example there are countless times you enter a bloodied bathroom expecting something to jump out. Over and over again the game lets you off the hook. You worry every single time you enter one. Making you keep your guard up constantly was what the first game excelled at.

EA seems good at taking great first franchise entries and immediately raping them to the point where fans of the first will be unlikely to enjoy the sequels.

    One word review: boring.

If your idea of fun is to wander around areas shooting identical enemies with identical weapons then Dead space is for you. I bought it because I was told that it is very very scary and the person in question can't play much of it at one go. He clearly needs help with his issues. Scary isn't the first word that comes to mind for me. Boring is.
