    I think that the atmosphere in this game does it all. The sound effects are simply amazing and the enemies never stop to surprise me when I am playing. The graphics are really well done and I often found myself completly "in character" because of this. Everything is top notch! I cannot wait for the sequel.

    This game has tremendous entertainment value. The level designs are creative and visually engaging, especially when you consider that most occur on a big spaceship. The 'baddies' are grotesque and frightening at times, but the real fun lies in tearing them to pieces with an array of upgradable weapons.

The graphics and audio are top notch, with incredible attention to detail and solid voice acting. The story may be pretty standard as far as sci-fi horror is concerned (think Event Horizon and Aliens), but it's presented well and A real contender for Game of the Year awards in 2008, Dead Space is a magnificent new IP from publisher Electronic Arts that both frightens and delights. The graphics and audio are top notch, with incredible attention to detail and solid voice acting. The story may be pretty standard as far as sci-fi horror is concerned (think Event Horizon and Aliens), but it's presented well and never detracts from the gameplay. This game is incredible immersive, eschewing the standard HUD interface in most 1st and 3rd person games for health and ammo meters believably placed on the character's suit and guns themselves. It took about 13 hours to beat, but it's a really great ride and I'm glad I dropped the $60 price of admission, which is more than I can say for a lot of games. I can't wait to see more entries in the series!… Expand

    a brilliant, terrifying experience. It may have borrowed most of it's ideas from others, but I borrowed from the best, and may be the most complete horror experience on any format.

    This is the best survival horror game ever made. There is only one thing I didn't like in this game, the fact the Isaac never says anything. That's forgivable though. if you like sound, or visuals, this is the game for you. if you like games, this is the game for you. if you are human, this is the game for you. Buy it, support it, and pray for a sequel.

    I picked this up recently as it was deeply discounted,being an xbox 360 popular game.Once I started playing it,I couldn't put it down as it was a very entertaining game with nice weapons to use.I can't wait to pick up #2 now.

    Scary as hell and worth every last cent. Atmospheric, claustrophobic, and that sense of "the unknown menace" around every corner made it hold its own. A new classic horror-survival franchise for years to come (here's hoping at least).

The graphics are on par with the best in the industry and do a very good job creating a dark, mysterious, and all around scary atmosphere. The game is full of logs and audio diaries that tell perfectly how everything came to be. Simply put, this game is spectacular. Frankly, I don't understand how anyone could say otherwise, but I guess it is just a matter of opinion. This game actually exceeded my expectations and definitely deserves a 10/10.… Expand

Please, if you like (well this its a contradiction) to enjoy a game but suffer at the same time this is the best choice: Dark Corners...Monster sounds in every level....Scary Babys....an the ghostly feelling of being watched by the evil itself.     The new king of survival horror. Like playing in an alien movie. One of the best gaming experiences ever made. The atmosphere in this game is superb and the game will scare the **** out of you and keep you on edge. The boss fights are amazing.

However, you should realize this game isn't really scary at all, but it does do fantastic job on unleashing so-called "cheap scare" in right moment, so if you aren't scared by this, it sure will keep you unsettled. That's for sure. Atmosphere of game is very well created thanks for the great sound effects, and the combat is very challenging, as you're forced to do "strategical dismembering" as you're chased by very well distinguished enemies, and trying to aim enemy's limb in intense situation does require great amount of focus. However, game loses its value after first playthrough. You probably got over with all the horror moment and got familiar with it, you probably remember which vent enemies blasted through, and you probably have well-upgraded killing machine at your disposal, and this is moment where game just becomes survival game. However, this game still is pretty good at being TPS zombie shoot-em-up, and harder difficulties really force you to conserve your ammunition, so there are a lot of strategy involved in this game. Even though it has low replay value, many will enjoy playing this game over and over again despite some flaws. So, don't hesitate to pass this game if you're familiar with horror games or TPS games in general. This game will not disappoint you.… Expand

    Dead Space is such a clever and unique title. The game takes the behind the shoulder angle like Resident Evil 4 and even improves on it by having your HUD on the character, life, slowmotion, and ammo gauges. The graphics and gameplay are perfect, recomended for anyone who like RE4 or survivor horror games.

    This game is a great experience for anyone anticipating the next Resident Evil installment. In fact, this could be dubbed EA's attempt at "Resident Evil in Space". Lacking much of anime stylings of the RE series (such as very identifiable characters), EA has done a good job recreating the experience. The atmosphere is oppressive and keeps the player on their toes and expecting something to happen at all times. This is achieved by (technically up-to-date) appropriate graphics that include skilled use of lights (or lack thereof), terrifying traces of past struggle, good map designs with rather contrasty tones and subdued colors. Still better, however, is the use of sounds that constantly make you turn around and look over your shoulders. Playing Dead Space home alone, lights off, is no mere trifle. It's a scary game. The weapons are relatively original and balanced; the more powerful weapons are useful in some battles, but by no means make the more basic ones obsolete. In fact, I used almost exclusively the two least exotic ones through-out the campaign. The capacity to improve your weapons and other equipment with what are called power nodes adds a nice touch, and since there is only a limited amount of them, forces you to focus on a few weapons and plan ahead. Also, your inventory is not bottomless, again forcing you to pick over the things you want to carry. Kudos Redwood Shores. The combat is enjoyable.     This is THE best single player game I've ever played. If you get used to the game it's not that scary anymore but still it's really fun. I'ts the first (single-player) game ever that I played again after beating it. I really can't wait till Death Space 2.

    10 out of 10 because you can't choose 9.5 (it still has some minor flaws)

The graphics are stunning and the soundtrack flawless, and the tension created almost made me want to stop playing the game. The storyline is good, if not a bit similar to Doom 3, and I felt a huge drive to finish the game to find out what was going on! The maps, if not very linear, were excellently made with Dead Space was a rough ride from start to finish, in an exceptionally good way. The graphics are stunning and the soundtrack flawless, and the tension created almost made me want to stop playing the game. The storyline is good, if not a bit similar to Doom 3, and I felt a huge drive to finish the game to find out what was going on! The maps, if not very linear, were excellently made with the anti-gravity and limb shooting a unique touch. Very scary and almost a relief to finish but I will definitely be giving it a second go on impossible mode.… Expand

You can customize your weapons even better than RE4 and it's full of scares and cinematic story twists. Even after I beat the game, I went back for more because after completing it, you get military grade armor, 50k credits, 10 power nodes, and even more! This game is my absolute This game rocks!     I have not played the full game, so this comment is based on the first four hours of play i have experienced. I just wanted to say that this game, so far, is absolutely brilliant. To get the most common criticisms out of the way, yes, the plot is pretty thin. Yes, the theme is 'revisited' alien sci-fi-horror , and yes, it is aparently a short game. Now the rest of it ? Freaking I have not played the full game, so this comment is based on the first four hours of play i have experienced. I just wanted to say that this game, so far, is absolutely brilliant. To get the most common criticisms out of the way, yes, the plot is pretty thin. Yes, the theme is 'revisited' alien sci-fi-horror , and yes, it is aparently a short game. Now the rest of it ? Freaking gold, man, gold. Its polished, its beautiful, its a little scary, but most of all its fun. Stomping the crap out of aliens that startled me has YET to get old, and i doubt it will.     I honestly had low expectations going into this game. I expected a survival horror game that tries to borrow from the strengths of games such as Resident Evil, Gears of War, Doom while including plots twists of Aliens and the Thing. Just basicly taking the good of gaming and cinema and trying to mesh it all together. This game simply stands on its own. It's rather amazing. This game I honestly had low expectations going into this game. I expected a survival horror game that tries to borrow from the strengths of games such as Resident Evil, Gears of War, Doom while including plots twists of Aliens and the Thing. Just basicly taking the good of gaming and cinema and trying to mesh it all together. This game simply stands on its own. It's rather amazing. This game is truly horrifying. Be prepared to utter some colorful panic phrases at least through the first half of the game. At a certain point.. Call it getting used to the controls.. call it getting used to the horror... but you almost become like a bad arse rambo zombie alien killing machine. The weapon selection/upgrade provides no end in variation on how to dispatch the baddies. I found myself switching up weapons... Not only for strategy sake.. but out of pure fun. This game also requires you to really think. Unlike Doom 3 where you run through picking up weapons.. blowing everything away.. You actually have to THINK about what weapons you use.. how much ammo you carry... How many health packs... If you are overconfident in one way or another (thinking you will blast through it being armed to the teeth without needing extra health or stasis.. You'll find yourself in a bad spot. Balancing everything out.. BASED ON YOUR strengths is what works. I don't think any two gamers will approach this game with the same exact strategy... and that's what's great. THere are no tricks here... No simple right strategy... No sure fire upgrade plan... You just do what works.. I admit that all this game could have included was just a little bit of humor.. Perhaps a wise cracking Isaac.. Not fearless.. but perhaps disquising fear with a tough bravado... Because that's exactly what you'll be trying to do as you progress... Relish in the kick arse moments where you fling a zombie alien across the room and take down another with your flametrhower.... clear the room... feel empowered.. make some jokes.. then be scared to death to enter the next.… Expand

    This is gaming goodness , great visuals,audio, gameplay and story combine for a solid experience. The no HUD approach works brilliantly keeping you in the acttion finding the enemies a little repetitious but fun factor makes up for this havn't had this much fun since BIOSHOCK quality gaming.

    Bio-Shock was an incredible game... Half-Life was an incredible game... Gears of War was an incredible game... On the other hand, The Thing was an incredible movie... Event Horizon was an incredible movie... Alien was an incredible movie... Now take both your hands and smash them together! Your left with one incredibly awesome game: Dead Space.

    This is the Bioshock of 2008. Takes all the great gameplay elements from other games, Resident Evit 4, Half Life 2, Doom 3, Metroid Prime and makes a game greater than the sum of it's parts. It will scare you. You will have nightmares after finishing it. But you'll want to play it again and again.

    I love this game to death! I don't play many survival horror games, but when I played this I was taken in by it. The atmospher is great, along with the enemies being gory, polished, and captivating. In my opininon, it has one of the greatest plotlines this year, nay, this decade. The replay value, for me, is better than some people say. Though the ADs Cannon part in level four is a I love this game to death!     The game is almost an exact copy of System Shock 2, right down to the level progression. That being said, since SS2 is my favorite game of all time any game that tries to (and successfully) copies it is ace in my book. The turrent portions are pointless and out of place, though.

    Best survival horror game in quite some time; perhaps ever. The graphics are great, with the exception of the shadows which can be pixelated in certain areas. The combat is tight, and can get downright intense. Overall, it's the game Silent Hill, and Resident Evil wishes they were.

    Biggest surprise of 2008! An incredibly well-made and polished game; a true piece of art that needs to be in the collection of every sci-fi and/or horror fan. Easily can be the winner of many 'Game of the Year' awards. I highly recommend this game to everyone (over 18 :P).

    A really good game thats full of scares and frights that will chill you to your bone. if u really want a scare then play it in the dark and it will terrify you. i was worried at first it wasn't going to live up to expectations but wow does it surpass it. a definite must buy for any horror fans out there. don't let this one slip by. its amazing. There are great innovations, for example, the lack of a game HUD is not a new concept, but the way they replace it is the best implementation I've seen.     This is one of the best games of 2008 in my honest opinion. I'm on my second round through the game and I can't get over how great the environments are. The USG Ishimura truly has a place in the Sci-Fi horror hall of fame and is definitely the star of the show. The dismembering tactic is a much appreciated change to traditional combat as well. All of these elements combined make for a truly fantastic game.     This game is absolutely fantastic. Beautiful to look at, with a great story, and a good challenge if played on the hardest difficulty setting. I would go so far as to say its easily the BEST horror game I've ever played. Although much backtracking is required, this adds to the realism rather than detracting from the variability of game-play.

    Scary in a way not seen since Fatal Frame combined with next gen graphics and controls make this game a must play. This game provides new and unique perspective in the survival horror while reinventing certain aspects that seem at home in the genre. This is simply a game not to be missed by Sci Fi/Horror/Survival enthusiasts anywhere. It's Event Horizon meets Aliens.

    Terrifying at times and breath-taking at others. Dead Space also has an emmersive story. The best part of the game however, for me, is the power node system for upgrading weapons. Basically power nodes are very rare to come by and they can be used to upgrade weapons. Once you have a decent arsenal of weapons the choice of where to spend them is probably the most difficult a have ever had Terrifying at times and breath-taking at others. Expecting nothing more than a thriller, I played the first two levels and found that the game was enjoyable while at the same time effin scary. The graphics are amazing and the way things are so quiet one moment then screaming in your ear the next, sets a hype in the game that you don't often get with your typical game. The gameplay itself is easy to learn and adds to the creepy feeling that you always get when walking down a dark, gloomy hallway. But the one thing that caught my interest the most was the enemies. With the deformed limbs of the necromorphs squirming and wriggling as they sprint at you while swinging at the air with whatever those things are coming out of their hands, it just makes you want to shoot them all the more. The only thing that keeps this game from becoming the best game i've ever played which is still CoD 4 modern, is the somewhat lessened thrill towards the end of the game and the lack of multiplayer. Other than that, Dead Space deserves much more than an 8.9 and is worth the money to buy.… Expand

This game is a blast to play, and takes a completely unique look at this genre that has had few successes in the recent years. It forces you to think of unique ways to kill your foe. The unique story line, weapons, and combat of this game makes it one of my favorites. The difficulty of the game scales well, and the puzzles in the game are challenging, yet doable. Another feature that has made this game "too easy" in some peoples eyes is your ability to project a path of light showing you what route to take to your objective. I cant count how many times I've played a game, stopped to pop off someones head, and end up going the wrong way. Dead Space is an absolute blast to play and I highly recommend it.… Expand

    This game is amazing, definitly one of the best games out there. And IS the best survival-horror out there no doubt in my mind. This games definitely deserves recognition.     got this gane this morning and cant stop playing..although the fact that all these reviews say I should finish it in 10 hours makes me feel inadequate. Seriously though,..this game just doesnt get old..I LOVE TO DIE!!! SOO GRUESOME... ok maybe thats why I havent beaten it in 10 hours. This game rocks tho..

Luckily I had a best buy gift card burning a hole in my pocket and I am not sorry I used it. THIS GAME KICKS MAJOR A$$!!!     I really really love this game, I was a big fan of Bioshock and I think this game is far better. ITs the best looking game I have ever seen on any console, and watching Issac get killed in glorious ways was GREAT!!! Best game I've played in a long time.

It was some time later smashed off by a tenticle attempting to immitate the 'FALCOWN PAUNCH', as Issac Clarke's hands desperately tried to grasp his head in the empty space where it once was. Infact Resident Evil is not even a horror game compared to this, I would class it more action/adventure and I would class Dead Space as real horror. Every step I take is overly cautious, (not only because of the horror element but because the game is so immersive, atmospheric and downright gorgeous and also because I just don't want it to end), every bullet, health pack and power node is absolutely priceless, the enemies and characters, the look and feel of the game are completely grounded in reality...yes I know this is a game set in space involving aliens...but the situation and the environment are completely believable, the ship really seems like a place people have lived and worked in especially if you've seen lots of horror sci-fi like Alien/s, Event Horizon, Sunshine.....this game just nails it, more than anything else out there. I was so hyped for Bioshock but for some reasont hat game kinda fell short of my expectations, I can't really put my finger on why, the atmosphere and gameplay were exactly what i was expecting, maybe it was the story....who knows? All I know is that Dead Space is it! It's shown me what a real horror game should be like. The game is just so solid, upgradeable weapons/suits/abilities and the graphics are absolutely amazing. I cannot stress enough what this game has done for EA's image imo. I'm just amazed! The main character and his suit are one of the highlights of this game, when you upgrade the tiny little details in your suit helps keep you immersed like never before. The shops, the work bench, the stasis and kenesis powers....EVERYTHING....seriously everything in this game is absolutely rock solid and that's not even touching on the enemies because the less you know about them the better, they're completely terrifying, smart and able. I honestly could go on and on about this game but if you like survival horror or action games then this is it guys! Seriously i've rambled enought and this is my first post at Metacritic because I just had to get it out therte! Make no mistake this is THE game this gen! EA you've done it!!… Expand

    This is a must buy. Dead Space has great gameplay, is extremely immersive, has thought-provoking puzzle and RPG elements, and has a very strong and well told story. The only minor issue keeping this game from a 10 is the repetitive nature of the missions; however, the repetition makes sense due to the story because of the protagonist's occupation.

To anyone knocking the graphics.. you must be from the future or something, because they are the best that technology has to offer. Perhaps Virtual Reality. Anyway, those interested in the "Space-horror" type movies will love this game.. it is like being able to play instead of watch movies like Aliens or Event Horizon. The story line is awesome, maybe not 100 percent original (as it does take a lot from space-horror movies) but interesting, and engaging. The enemies are fun as hell to kill. The puzzles are just difficult enough to NOT take away from the FPS experience.. in other words, you don't get lost in trying to solve puzzles like in Silent Hill. I didn't give it a 10 only because one thing did annoy me slightly about it: the ammo/items supply. At times, you have to really conserve on ammo when all you want to do is blow stuff away. Other than that though, AWESOME game. Will buy Dead Space II as soon as it is available.… Expand

    I bought this game instead of buying bioshock since the stores i've been to didn't have bioshock. However, i really liked this thrilling&gore game and i think it's way more interesting than bioshock.

The only complaint I have is that the only downloadable content packages are all just new suits of armor that don't change the gameplay much. My only thing with it was maybe a little bit drawn out, but after beating it, it didn't seem so bad. I really liked the safe/inventory feature. I'm working on unlocking all the achievements now.     On my list of top 5 games. I am a sucker for survival horror games and it doesn't get much better than this. The atmosphere, the jump moments, and the freaky looking monsters all add to the tension. Add in some thought provoking puzzles, fun combat, and a good storyline...and what else could you ask for?

Its a total breathe of fresh air which the survival horror genre needed so much a different take on the classic genre which has been dominated by Resident evil personal favorite of mine. Graphics are excellent and the music perfectly suits the action. However, the biggest problem I had with this game was that it just wasn't frightening at all. Their function is just to bark orders at Isaac to journey to another part of the ship. The bulk of the game consists of running around from A to B with no real idea of what you're doing. As previously mentioned, the ability to shoot off limbs is a nice deviation from the norm but the enemies faced and the process of execution become monotonous.     This game is near flawless and this is considering that I have played it a 4 years after release. There are very few titles that have managed to live up to the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill mantle of a truly scary game. With that said, I never EVER got scared once in the entire game, so to me it's more of a shooting game than a survival horror.     The developers have managed to create quite a promising game universe within only two games which is impressive given the amount of time Dead Space has been around compared to other franchises.
    They have managed to create likeable characters, a gripping story that haunts you even after playing and have evoked a sense of never being safe in-game. The player can be walking towards a door that leads to a supposedly "safe" zone, hear an ominous sound in the walls and have an enemy burst from the vent next to them. It is hard to describe the atmosphere this game evokes. It's chilling, to say the least and I definitely recommend playing this game with some sort of surround system, be it headphones or speakers.
    The gameplay is a fluid blend of Resident Evil 4's over-the-shoulder perspective and that of a big budget action game. While some have said this detracts from the "survival-horror" element of the game, I argue that these people have not tackled it on the hardest difficulty, where even the responsiveness of the controls do not help. This game is definitely one of my favourite games ever and I can't resist another revisit at least once a year.    … Expand

You don't want to be eaten and you will run or shoot and pant and gasp and lean...just real nail biting stuff here. The controls or over the shoulder view don't feel quite perfect, and the bits of zero-g navigation get a bit clunky at times, but it just doesn't matter. I rarely give out a 10 for anything because it leaves no room to go, but I think this sort of artistic creativity grabbed what is best about single player gaming and that is about an environment that lets the player lose themselves. Its almost too good because I would laugh at myself by how carried away I would get with my own gasps and seat jumping. But after a brief moment of self realization, there I was again on a spaceship, clinging to whatever ammo filled weapon I could find...searching around and walking on eggshells trying to anticipate what horror or challenge lurk around that next dimly lit corner. I played nothing else but this until I beat it, and when I did...I started a second play through. Bottom line...best horror/suspense game I have ever played, groundbreaking and beautiful in all of its horror and insanity.… Expand

    While it doesn't make for the best survival horror game and has zero pacing it makes an excellent action horror game with a good plot and very good combat plus great boss fights makes this a must play of our generation.

Granted the scares were mainly of the "make you jump" kind rather than the "building tension" type, but I couldn't help but be impressed with the entire game. The graphics and sound are top notch. The atmosphere is unbelievably terrifying, the necromorphs are beautifully designed, the storyline is deeply compelling, I love everything about this game. I could go on for days about how amazing this game is, but my favorite aspect is a tie between the atmosphere and the character development. Granted, Isaac Clarke never says a word in the game (he's basically the Link of Dead Space) you can still get a sense of dread and regret from Isaac. When Isaac is separated from the rest of his crew, fighting for his life, you can never really tell who's helping and who's hindering. I loved the fact that you had to shoot the limbs rather than shooting directly at the head (as everyone is inclined to do), and it never ceased to freak me out when I would shoot off a head and it was coming right back at me more pissed off than before. The fact that necromorphs crawled through the vents was a perfect way to keep players on their toes and jumping at every little noise. The weapons in the game are beautiful and the upgrades just make them sexier as the game goes on. Of course the biggest shocker came at the end when you found out that Isaac's girlfriend Nicole has actually been dead the whole time, meaning Isaac has been slowly going more and more insane as the game goes on. It still terrifies me when I walk into a room, and then a giant tentacle would swoop from around the corner and drag Isaac down the hall until he reached the hole in the wall the tentacle made and would be ripped to shreds. The death scenes in Dead Space were spectacularly well done, very detailed and still make me cringe. Anyone who loves horror-survival should DEFINITELY give this game a try.… Expand

Tread lightly and keep your plasma cutter pointed forward. There are plenty of save points and the game never becomes overly difficult. The story unfolds at a clean pace and the upgradeable armor/weapons allow for steady progress. The story never feels too long and the story isn't marred with long cutscenes like most games nowadays.     I like scary stuff, and this is the scariest game I personally played. Give me a daunting atmosphere, isolation and looming dread. Give it to me! I don't want no coop buddy. I don't need no blockbuster action movie music in the background. And I certainly want the cheesy unnecessary dialogue kept to a bare minimum. Dead Space did all that for me. I thank it for that. If you plan onI like scary stuff, and this is the scariest game I personally played. Give me a daunting atmosphere, isolation and looming dread. Give it to me! I don't want no coop buddy. But they are also breeding and trying to alter the atmosphere within the ship to suit themselves. It's up to you, as the engineer, to survive and fix various parts of the ship whilst fighting for your life. Great elements include having to shoot the limbs off enemies, rather than go for head shots, a brilliant holographic menu system (everything is in-game, there are no menu screens. Even your inventory is handled on screen, and when people contact you, a hologram of them is rendered in front of your character, to talk to them), a variety of interesting weapons and abilities to upgrade including telekenisis and stasis (grabbing and throwing stuff, and slowing down enemies), and also there are some great atmosphere touches like parts of the game where you have to go into damaged areas of the ship which have no air, and therefore your hearing is diminished, and your own heart beat and breathing is pretty much all you hear, besides ominous thuds. Most of the time the game is awesome, and feels rewarding and satisfying as you collect loot from around the place, and sell what you don't need at the stores within the game. Some of the boss battles are not very interesting - which is standard in these kinds of games unfortunately. Also, the game suffers from the same problem as all survivals - either you do well and then the game is just too easy as you are overflowing with ammo, health and money. Or, you are not doing so well, in which case you struggle for ammo, heatlh and / or money, and then you have to reload from a check point. Not sure how games can fix this issue. Luckily for me I found the game slightly on the easy side - but still found it good fun. By the end of your first run, you will not have unlocked and upgraded everything, so you can start your game+ and shred some enemies with your powered-up stuff, and continue your upgrading.… Expand

When I played DS1 I had the brightness in game turned down very very low, as the instructions say. This game will seriously mess with you if you have your brightness that low on a nice LED television.
    Unfortunately there is something that keeps the game from being a 10, which is also one of the things that made it work, but I have to hold it against the game because it is an actual factor. The ready availability of shops, ammo, and money to upgrade weapons and equipment with makes the game progressively easier and more care-free until you are no longer scared or worried about anything. It detracts from the horror environment and Visceral understood this in DS3 when they made a hardcore mode. Though that holds it back, Dead Space is still one of the best games I've ever played.    … Expand

    A horror game is hard to come by and usually get bad ratings. However, Dead Space out does all of them. Inspired by Resident Evil and Doom, mix them up into one game and it becomes a true masterpiece!

    Even six years after its release, Dead Space still looks and sounds great. Dead Space was one of the best survival horror games, if not the best, of the last generation consoles. The atmosphere is perfect, the health and ammo is limited, and the enemies are terrifying. If you haven't played it yet, you need to get on that.

I finished it like 5 times on PC an another 3 times on the 360. The only reason I am not giving it a 10/10 because there is no new game+ where you can start the game all over on a harder difficulty with the gear you achieved, only on the same difficulty.… Expand

    It has graphics that were very nice in the year it got released and they are still very great. Gameplay is above the average, it feels really cool to throw stasis to necromorphs, to dismember them... it feels really nice to play Dead Space.     The story is somewhat strange but it's cool and makes you wonder from where did all this necromorphs came from.

The Ishimura is a huge ship packed to the brim with monsters and creatures that make tension all the more noted. Seeing Isaac swing his tools to knockback targets andDead Space is a great game that still has me convinced that it takes ideas from Resident Evil 4, apply a mixture of Alien and Ben Carpenter's The Thing, and you have a very unsettling and terrifying survival horror game. The Ishimura is a huge ship packed to the brim with monsters and creatures that make tension all the more noted. Seeing Isaac swing his tools to knockback targets and stomp floor level enemies while grunting the whole way is really great, and using the dismemberment concept is very clever even if it makes the game easier on newer playthroughs. Of course if you want a challenge, you can always start on higher difficulties like Impossible and Hard mode.

    The HUD system is very creative and in some ways outstanding because it allows better immersion and realism to Isaac's condition when the player looks at his spine RIG for health, his stasis battery on his back too, his inventory in a hologram projection from his body and a ammo counter shown only on the weapon when he aims it. It makes the immersion flow really well. Adding to that virtually no cutscenes or loading times aside from booting up the game or a new chapter, and the game plays so well and consistent that I never felt bogged down. Isaac isn't a fast guy (he's wearing a space suit obviously) but to hear his heartbeat and grunt as he moves around is really genius to make the player feel like him, like we are in his shoes when things go to hell.

    The atmosphere nails it. I very rarely found any part of Dead Space lacking. The ship's different areas and levels might have seemed mundane and realistically plain, but adding the grotesque alien tissue, blood, corpses and weird cult like symbols everywhere (esp in the final chapter) and you get a unnerving experience. The no oxygen space sequences are very memorable not so much for the objectives, but just the fact that it felt so real and like how sound in space would work. The shadow and lighting (at its time) was unmatched by game prior to, and I'd wager it was visually one of the best looking games of that decade (2000-2010).

    The combat and upgrade system was definitely good. I like the dismembering of limbs and seeing a ripper saw through a Necromorph limb really feels great. The grapple breaks and death scenes are vicious and outstanding in terms of horror and even tend to go on longer than you would like to watch it for.

    The story was okay with Isaac and his team crashing on a ship and desperate to get out when they learn first hand of the alien creatures on board. Lots of fetching and ordering on poor Isaac, which I consider an issue and con of the game, but what sold me was the loads of logs and audio recordings that detailed the mystery of the infection and colony outbreaks like one big conspiracy. Dead Space's world just felt so unknown and dangerous, playing on the concept of what we humans would want to see is out there in space should we ever leave orbit. It's not the first game or medium to do this, but the fact it made the alien threat far more sinister when tying ideas of Unitology into the mix and you get interesting theories that 2 and 3 would later answer (for better or worse).

    Dead Space to me is well done and excellent horror game that stole my heart for its world and mechanics. The only issues I have is the lack of other npcs having any real actions along side Isaac which instead is just serving as plot vehicles whenever Isaac completes an objective or acquires a new item. The bosses are a mixed bag; the Hunter is a very great fight that mixes the dismemberment mechanic and invincibility to make fights even more desperate whenever players are in a tough spot, but the Leviathan fight was pretty lame and could be hard for players struggling with resources, where unlike the Hunter players could at least shoot off a leg and run away and conserve ammo. The Hive Mind's first phase is pretty good, with a unique time limit event of which Isaac must shoot its weak spots while dangling thousands of feet up by its tentacles before he is eaten alive. The second part begins to fall apart though, as it only just repeats the same attacks and exposes its chest for damage. The shooting sequences like the asteroid and alien jamming comms also lack but its more in terms of fairness and luck than skill. Issues aside, it's a game still worth playing and I highly recommend it. Out of the trilogy, the original soars above its brothers as a testament to sci-fi horror games done right.    … Expand

    Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump.

    It's easily the best survival horror game since the masterful "Resident Evil 4" and it sets the bar high for graphics, sound, and scares in its respective genre. Dead Space is an artistic nightmare clearly designed for survival horror fans by a passionate and dedicated team of like-minded gamers. Just be sure to play it with the lights on.
