Not usual drawn into the purchase of shoot 'em ups i was amazed at how much fun this game was, controls are perfect in my opinion, and the difficulty curve throghout the game is great for challenging gameplay. Completed once, and now am thoroughly enjoying my second round, this ones keeping all of my other wii purchases in the shade.

Resident Evil 4 is pretty much as good as gaming gets. It is the pinnacle of action-horror. It was an absolute revolution for 3rd person shooters, action games and gaming in general. The Wii version made it even more fun.

The gameplay is near perfect. The controls are excellent because the whole game is designed around them. The over the shoulder camera keeps the action at the perfect distance. The weapons using laser sights and having so much punch to them. Fast, accurate aiming with just enough weapon sway, inaccuracy and enemy threat to keep you on your toes and trying to hit your shots. The way enemies consistently react to getting shot and the incredibly satisfying headshots. Following up with a kick or suplex. The game just constantly rewards you for playing well. Taking on enemies with just a knife whether it's for fun or to save ammo or to slash projectiles out the air. Watching enemies fall off edges after being shot. Pushing the ladders while enemies try to climb it. Shooting through doors. kicking doors open to damage enemies on the other side. Getting enemies to group together and throwing an incendiary grenade into them. Leaping out windows. The set pieces and bosses. Crowd control. Repositioning when needed and not knowing exactly what's behind you while doing so. Using the environment to your advantage. Getting your head taken off in one horrific hit. The enemy variety. The weapon variety. They somehow made you not hate escorting another character. The list goes on and on and god damn it's all so good. The pacing is so well done as well with the game constantly throwing cool new things at you but also knowing when to slow things down a bit. The developers didn't even stop after creating a brilliant, lengthy, highly re-playable main story, they went and did more. The Mercenaries mode is really addictive. Then there's Separate Ways and unlockables too.

The story, characters, dialogue and cut scenes are ridiculously entertaining and well directed. It's so goofy and fun. God damn it's all so fun, remember FUN? It's like the only questions asked when making this game were - Is it fun? Is it entertaining? Does it play well? Does it fit in? If yes, then put it in the game. It's like they had no fear of risks and were just totally confident in what they were making, which is surprising if you know the story of this games development. The tone and atmosphere is handled perfectly. Seriously how did they do this? The game can be silly and/or over the top one minute and then have no problem being more serious the next. It also can be genuinely creepy at times, or surreal or bleak. It definitely delivers on the body horror and gore too.

The game looks and sounds top notch as well. It was one of the best looking games available when it came out. The art direction is fantastic. The village is cold, bleak, isolated and hostile with something gruesome around every turn. The castle is surreal, sinister and uncomfortable. It's so opulent and ornate but something is very off about it and there are traps everywhere. It kind of reminds me of the mansion from the RE 1 remake. The Island is grimy, dirty and industrial and does have some great creepy sections but it's visually more generic and forgettable unfortunately. They nailed the character and enemy designs too. The voice acting is exactly what was needed. The enemies sound harsh and scary. The guns hit hard and all the gross noises are spot on. The soundtrack is superb and so are the ambient sounds.

However no game is perfect and Resident Evil 4 is no exception. The worst thing about this game is that it wasn't survival horror and it put an end to Resident Evil being a survival horror franchise as they went down the action-horror path from here on wards. The puzzles are also not the best but I guess really good puzzles would have bogged down this games action focus and pace. The Island is also not as good as the first two locations. I think this is mostly due to the first two areas setting such a high bar, the industrial setting feeling more generic and maybe being a little too action heavy at times. Looking back at the game now I think it did overuse the quick time events as well. As cool and well done as they are it gets a bit much, especially when your on like the 20th play through.

If you have never played it before do yourself a favour and play it now. I highly, highly recommend Resident Evil 4. I still remember buying my collector's edition just after launch, which is still on my shelf, and playing it all day. Then I bought the Wii version and played it to death again. Then the PS3 and then the PS4. I think I am going to be playing this once every five years or so until I die. Some people try to dismiss this game's high praise with statements like "It's just nostalgia" or "You just think old good, new bad." But they are wrong, Resident Evil 4 really is just that good. This is what lightning in a bottle looks like.

Now let's talk more precisely about this Wii version, the controls works just fine (I wouldn't say they are better, it all depends on your gaming habits, but the game was originally design for classic controller and you'll not suffer at all by playing it on another system), the graphics didn't improved from the original release and that's a bit of a shame (the HD versions exist by now so if you're looking for better graphics don't pick the Wii version), but the most important thing on Wii is to do the controls right and they succeeded it, so good port.
Finally the two minors negative points : the story is poorly written ( with all those bad jokes make by Leon) and should have been more stressful and engaging. And looking back at time now that we are in 2015, it is the first step to the end of Resident Evil, for the 5 and 6 they just added more and more action , to take away all the fear (there is some in the 4 but way less than the first ones).
Ideally I would have mark this game with a 9.5, so I lowered it to 9 as it is not perfect and tens are reserved for games that have no negative points.

It's the same game you played on Gamecube or PS2. They just threw down the graphics to become top-notch PS1 graphics, and low end PS2 graphics. The gameplay is okay, very hard to get used to. Controller doesn't work all that swell. Game itself is excellent, just Wii needs to learn to make some good games with decent graphics.

Brutal controls. They are playable if you are willing to struggle learning them for 10 hrs until they are second nature, but it is not worth the effort since there are equally good shooters out there with better graphics that do not require this effort. In all fairness i think it would be an ok game if you only had a few games and were willing to put in the time on this game with more patience.

With the bad out of the way, the boss fights are very impressive, unique, and fun. Being able to "combine" items in inventory usually means you need to use moon logic or click every single item on another - but RE:4 handles it very well. Enemies are well-varied and surprising. Puzzles are challenging enough to be enjoyable but not too much to become frustrating. Balance and pacing are solid -- unlike many in its genre, it does not draw out gameplay by making you walk around aimlessly for 30m+. Devs create tension very successfully though the game cannot touch the ankles of games like those by Frictional in creating an atmosphere of dread. Still, the game is a fun shooter with plenty of gameplay variety, very worthy of a play. Expand

As good as the Gamecube version but better with all modes being unlockable (Assignment Ada, Separate Ways, Mercenaries)... Also, the Wii controls make the game more fun and actually loosens the gameplay up for better control. It has everything that I like in a game, being that it has a good story, big range of weapons, available upgrades, heaps of sell-able items, action and re-playability! Some people even prefer it personally I just see it as more so an alternative than a replacement for a regular control scheme. I like RE 4 (the Wii version), despite its great change in the gameplay, this game still has balance between action and horror, puzzles and backtracking, doesn't lose the essence of the saga completely. The plot is too cliche and ends up being forgettable, despite having good moments and a couple of interesting characters.

Honestly? This is probably the best way to play Resident Evil 4. The graphics at the time made it the best version, the game itself is fantastic with a good story and wonderful gameplay that makes it insanely enjoyable for one playthrough or a hundred, and the combat is tight and feels good to do. However, the Wii version has the best use of motion controls I've seen. Not even the PCHonestly? This is probably the best way to play Resident Evil 4. Not even the PC version with a mouse can match it, and really it is baffling how good this game feels for a control system it wasn't designed for. The motion controls make this version so fun to play and come back to, and the controls feel crisp and tight with the gameplay. I found the game surprisingly difficult until I started to think more strategically about the game environments. Unlike many FPS games, the scarcity of ammo in RE4 is not terribly frustrating. That's where melee attacks come in: kniving downed enemies helps conserve ammo and head-busting kicks come in a variety of juicy flavours. Too bad you have to return to the analog stick to play the next-gen FPS like Bioshock, GTA, Gears of War. I can't wait for Metroid 3 though. I gave the PS2 version a 7. In retrospect, I would give it a 1. It's that dramatic a difference. Expand

Great game, better than the PS2 and GameCube versions. The controls remove the frustration with the controller in the other two versions, and only take a little while to get used to. The full 480p widescreen looks spectacular for a Wii game.

I understand that people are entitled to their opinions, but if anyone tries to say that this game is awful then they are simply wrong. But the story is well told, and the voice acting is great for a video game. The weapons are fantastic and the wealth of bonus features that open up after beating the game is on a level of its own. I've beat this game 5 times on Game cube, and twice on Wii. And I'm still playing and loving it. In my opinion, this game is not just great, it's the greatest game ever made. If RE5 delivers as this one did, I will buy a 360 just for that. Expand

Though they suffer a bit when things get hectic, the Wii-mote-enabled controls generally serve RE4 well: Aiming weapons, swiping your knife, and shaking off face-sucking nasties with real-world moves adds urgency to an already incredibly intense experience. [July 2007, p.82]
  2. It has the looks, it has the compelling level design, and it has the scary bits. Check, then: this is Resident Evil 4 all over again, but slightly better.
