This is the first installment of my retro game reviews and yes, I realize this game is nowhere near old enough to be considered retro but it’s not exactly new either. Metroid: Other M came out in August of 2010 with mixed reviews. I was in a Wal-Mart and decided you know what, let’s give it a try. What’s the worst that can happen? So without further ado, here is my review of Metroid: Other M for the Nintendo Wii.

I grew up playing Super Metroid as a kid. Now I admit that I was not very good at that game and I'm sure I put in 100 plus hours to finally beat it, but the simplicity of the mechanics were very easy for me to pick up on, and the exploration element that Metroid games are known for was so compelling. That sensation of stumbling upon an item that was just out of reach, wondering how anyone could possibly get it, was motivation in itself to obtain such items throughout the campaign. Discovering items that would lend you the ability to pick up items you once thought you could never get was wonderful. However, Nintendo and Team Ninja opted to deviate from the traditional first person format of previous Metroid games in preference of a more “linear” action game. Was it a success? Keep reading! She's a bad time as far as metroid goes, 2/10 , would not Other M ever again.

Thought that the studio would have made a smash hit, but instead we got a blemish on the cherished face of Metroid

Holy s**t this game is bad. The narrative and writing are utter trash, Samus Aran gets demoted from a badass, independent bounty hunter to an over-sensitive, baby-crazy, immature girl with daddy issues that's afraid of using powers she already has and that could greatly help her and her mission if they don't get arbitrarily authorized by some dude she doesn't even work for anymore; theHoly s**t this game is bad. The narrative and writing are utter trash, Samus Aran gets demoted from a badass, independent bounty hunter to an over-sensitive, baby-crazy, immature girl with daddy issues that's afraid of using powers she already has and that could greatly help her and her mission if they don't get arbitrarily authorized by some dude she doesn't even work for anymore; the control scheme is one of the most asinine I have ever encountered in a video game ; the camera seems to be working for the bad guys; the exploration and powerup-progression aspects that have always been the lifeblood of the Metroid franchise get reduced to almost zero; the music sucks ass; the atmosphere is lacking; the level design and pacing is terrible (you take so many pointless little detours just to unlock a door or sth similar); every single little room and hallway is populated with 200 enemies at the minimum; the cutscenes drag on for waaaaaaay too long and can neither be paused nor skipped (you can't even use the home button); I mean, I could go on.

I have sometimes seen the cope from people that while this isn't a good Metroid game, it's supposedly still a fun 3D Action game. To which I say: Are you out of your mind? Have you ever even played another 3D Action game in your life? Even Ratchet on the f**king PS2 blows this out of the water by a country mile.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game honestly isn't terrible. I wouldn't call it a good game, but to say it was spawned out by Satans fairly ugly wife is a bit of an overstatement. Now, I must say that I am a diehard Metroid fan, and this is probably going to have a major effect on my review. I don't think this invalidates my review though, as a game is more then just it's contents. A game is it's intentions and it's effects on the rest of it's respective series. With that being said, I'll actually move on to reviewing the game.

So, I'll start with the things that i liked about this game. The first is some of the gameplay elements and the animation. While the designs of the world and creatures were pretty bland and forgettable, everything is animated wonderfully and does a good job of immersing me in the world. It still surprises me just how good the graphics are in this game as well, especially considering it's on the Wii. Particle effects, higher resolution textures, and pretty good sound design permeate the entire game.

Moving on to the things that I didn't like about this game, I'd like to say that Nintendo's asinine decision to not use the nun chuck for this game to preserve a "nostalgic" feel really drags the game down. The D-Pad only allows for 8 directions of movement, less then Super Mario 64, making it really annoying to make any precise movements. An analog stick really would have increased the play-ability of the game by a long shot. Then there's the "first-person mode". While it works when you've played for a few hours and gotten used to it, it's still really confusing and unintuitive. You have to turn your controller a full 90 degrees and reconfigure your right hand in order to be able to do anything. Did I mention that the game tries to slow down to give you time to adjust, but it's just not enough to make it smooth and easy.

The exploration aspects of this game are diminished both by boring world and game design. You go on a linear set of rooms proceeding from one cut scene/boss set to the next. You hardly need missile tanks because you can refill missiles any time that you want, and there only a few energy tanks throughout the entire game. All your powerups are just given to you randomly, so there's no reason for you to explore other then to get to the next cut-scene and occasional annoying boss fight.

In all honesty though, all of the things that I mentioned prior to this aren't what drag this game down. With just these things it would just be a mediocre game that you wouldn't ever have to think about again if you didn't want to, sort of like Metroid Prime Hunters. Really the main thing that hurts this game so much, is its inclusion of Adam Malkovich. He was a prominent figure in both the Manga and Metroid Fusion from the early 2000s. In each of those he seemed to be more of a mentor figure. He's the person who began giving her direction as an early adult when she joined the military. They fought many battles together, including parts of the war with the Space Pirates. So the logical path for Other M to take would be to pretend that Samus's actual father figure, an alien named Old Bird, doesn't exist. The it should go and treat Adam like he was her daddy. Not even like a caring daddy, but a stupid, egotistical, abusive daddy. Not only that, but Samus, the same badass who had destroyed several PLANETS by this part of the timeline, just goes with it. She never stands up to him or tells him to shut up, but in the end acts like he was being a hero. It's a dangerous message to be giving a bunch of teenage American boys (because that's the majority of Metroid fans), who are still figuring things out, like morality. This isn't to mention that the story is just messy and full of plot holes anyways. There's a part where Samus gets traumatized by the reincarnation of the creature that killed her parents and destroyed the planet she was born on. This makes sense considering she was a child when it happened, but there's one problem. That problem is that Samus has fought the same creature several times throughout the series by the time this game takes place. There is no reason for her to be traumatized by him. That's only one of the many, many, many, plot holes throughout the game. And it's for this reason that I can't give the game even close to just a mediocre rating. While the gameplay is fine, the story manages to not only destroy any interesting character development that a fan favorite could have had, the messy story manages to push immoral and even dangerous ideals.

It's taken me years to really gather my thoughts on this game. I got it a few years after it came out when I was still fairly young, and even back then I could understand just how flawed this game was. I finished it out of a feeling of obligation because it was a part of the "Metroid lineage", but it would honestly be better if this game just got wiped from history, and consequently, from cannon.

My very first Metroid, and I think that it's a fine game. I like the 3D environment, platforming, challenging gameplay, and focus on the story. I also like how Samus has personality, and talks, which makes her a decent character, instead of a boring silent protagonist.

Expand

I'd always heard that the story was bad, but that the gameplay was actually pretty good. Once I got to play it for myself, I'd find out that that was a total lie. The story was indeed pretty bad, but the controls were some of the worst controls I've ever had the displeasure of using in a videogame. I could forgive the subpar gameplay, though, if the story was good. Unfortunately, it's just sort of a rehash of Fusion that takes place directly before Fusion, making Samus retroactively look like a bit of an idiot in Fusion when she's surprised by the same things that happened in this game. It also feels weird now knowing that Adam only died immediately before Fusion, making things much more awkward when she turns right around and names her ship's AI "Adam", only for it to turn out to actually BE Adam. Technically speaking, the visuals of Other M are very impressive for the Wii, but the actual aesthetics and designs of characters leave something to be desired. The music was very lackluster, as well. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone, let alone another Metroid fan. Expand

finally a Metroid game where they explain the story with cinematics, so it is much easier to understand the story and that apart it makes it more interesting from the point of view. Its gameplay can divide the community but for someone who likes three dimensions it will be a great experience to play.

While its not the best metroid, its no terrible either, gameplay is fine, though it has some issues with the camara on 3rd person mode or being required to be in 1st person to shoot missiles, they could've just used the nunchuck for movement, level design is ok, very similar to fusion, the mechanic of regaining your health, for me, is a very welcome adittion, so far the game looks ok, but the problem with the game comes with the story, first, the plot with Samus not using her abilities is the most unmetroidy thing in the plot, the overwhelming amount of dialogue is also something a metroid game would never do, and the huge amount of cinematics did not made me empathise more with Samus, it just made me want to skip the cinematics (which you can't) and go back to playing the game, these are all issues that could have been fixed easily, just remove most cinematics, remove some dialogue and rewrite the whole plot, either way, the plot suffers a lot with the "we wanted to make Samus a more human character" which was not nescesary, bosses are fine, though some like the nest thing are just normal enemies, bosses like Ridley are great, i'd say this game has the 2nd best ridley fight in the series, but minibosses lack a bit of creativity and are rehashed multiple times in the game, and the one that dropped you the seeker missiles was just anoying.
Overall metroid other m is the worst metroid in the series, (btw federation force is not a metroid) and while it sounds bad, all metroid games are fantastic, and the metroid series has 2 masterpieces in prime and in super metroid, mom is not terrible, fails in trying to tell a better story with cinematics and giving Samus more humanity, but other than that, mom is an ok game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally got to nearly complete Metroid Other M. In this journey of living to the fullest every Metroid entry Nintendo has released I have arrived to the infamous of the bunch 'Metroid: Other M', and I am here to share my out of the ordinary adventure I had with this videogame. This entry Yoshio Sakamoto gave us ten years ago was made in high hopes with the vision of making a heavily story-driven 'Metroid' game that could be seen as a movie but the end results of a big half of this game didn't quite met Sakamoto's expectations. An anticipated game that achieved bad executions, one of the first complaints was all over the changes to our beloved protagonist Samus. Though her voice actor did a good job, the narrative for this game was what made it feel very off, which made many fans dislike the story just by that part on it's own. This was the first time Samus, the mostly silent protagonist, was given a full fledged voice throughout whole Metroid game. Furthermore, playing this game can be fun and action-packed (a rarely expressed opinion in comparison to the general public) all in a 2.5D perspective for the most part, while also having a very linear story unlike most Metroid games which don't give you objectives and set you off by yourself to explore. This game does contain "Metroidvania" elements but doesn't exactly feel like a proper Metroid game as a whole. In addition, some new combat techniques were introduced and show off satisfying animations (which was further improved in the remake 'Metroid: Samus Returns'). Hatred & jokes towards the game can be seen nearly everywhere in the internet when the game is being the topic, initially coming because of the way the protagonist Samus & her relationship with her ex-commander Adam Malkovich are portrayed. This story also lays out various major plot points which contradict most games before it, for this reason alone, many fans of the franchise disliked such game by how much we are used to having the games with expansive stories that connect together and form a massive timeline. Though there are a few things that can be given deep looks and realize that a portion of the plot points shown can fill in gaps near the end of the "canon" timeline, making it considered to be taking place before the chronologically latest installment 'Metroid: Fusion'. Nonetheless, the game essentially wrote itself out of being canon due to refuting key points shown which ignore most of the events in the past, especially the character development getting controversially retconned every now and then. Thus, this 5-8 hours game can be enjoyed though it's for the better to have low expectations in the story; on the contrary, the gameplay rarely comes close in becoming tedious, meanwhile there are also save points in several nearby spots to help you on the way. And that's not all, the game provides you a quick but challenging post game where you finish off what's left of the story and you are given the freedom to explore and collect your missed items before heading to the main objective, after this you officially finish the game and the results screen show up as most games from the series.

In conclusion, this game took the formula of Metroid into a different route and brought new ideas to the table that are great in concept but unfortunately not executed as expected.

Metroid other M is a metroid that has greatly divided fans and will continue to divide over time. However, does a game that doesn't give the fans what they expect make it a bad game ? For me the answer is obviously no.

Other M is part of Nintendo's attempt to renew the license, to bring a whole new dimension to it, whether in terms of narration or gameplay, after the success of Metroid Prime. It is therefore extremely confusing to take in hand this game after having played the primes because this last one takes back much more codes of the 2D opuses. It is more linear, less rotor and offers a much more nervous and dynamic gameplay. We are facing a metroid oriented as an action game.

In my eyes, this attempt is a success : Samus is handled very well, the gameplay works perfectly : the fights have never been so fluid where the previous opuses (whether 2D or Prime) offered confrontations that were sometimes too soft. The level design is not outdone, it is certainly less labyrinthine but the station on which the events of the game take place offers a very interesting maze to go through tinged with a sinister atmosphere proper to this saga. The bosses are not the most outstanding of the series but Other M offers memorable confrontations with some unexpected surprises.

As far as the story is concerned, the developers chose to focus on Samus' story. For me this is not a betrayal of the character, because in this game we play a traumatized Samus following the events of Super Metroid and I think it's a very good choice because we explore facets that were unexploited even though we knew about their existence since Metroid fusion. Unfortunately, some parts of the game are a bit painful, with Samus talking too much sometimes and the plot taking too long to set up some interesting issues. The story itself is not too bad, a bit cliché from time to time but overall it is quite good.

On the other hand, apart from Adam and Anthony, the rest of the characters are as uninteresting as possible and absolutely not developed, it's a pity because their deaths have no impact on the player or on the story, but I must say that the traitor who eliminates the traces of the team as we go along participates in the oppressive atmosphere of the game which is quite successful.

On the technical level, the game is one of the most beautiful of the Wii, there was a very good job done especially during the cinematics, we regret the colors too dull on the whole game. As far as the OST is concerned, it's a bit of a black spot, I must say, very few striking themes (I'll say globally the one of Ridley, of the end boss, the two musics of the title screen and finally the one of the epilogue), we are far from the rest of the series on this point.

In conclusion: an unloved game but nevertheless an excellent action/adventure game and a very good Metroid despite everything. The ninja team brought a new breath to the series with a more agile Samus than ever, the gameplay is very good, the level design is also successful, in short we only regret a scenario and characters poorly mastered, which will however have allowed to flesh out the lore and history of Samus. No, Metroid other M is not a bad game, no it is not the shame of the series and I hope that one day, the fans of this mythical saga still skeptical will give it a second chance.

I loved this game. Battle system is great, so is the story. Samus shows her inner thoughts and connection to the only person she considered family. A scene with Ridley that everyone was **** about makes much more sense when you are mature enough and have enough empathy to understand that child trauma can affect even the toughest bounty hunter in the galaxy. What spoiled it for most players out of Japan was the bad voice acting and localization of the dialogue. (Samus following orders makes much more sense when you get the actual original text) Watch the whole Japanese movie with English subs on YouTube and you will understand. I believe that many people could not look past the character advancements and changes to Samus from previous games, however the game is intentionally an evolution and coming of age tale of Samus which in fact very much makes sense from a series perspective and is absolutely necessary to understand more about the character. I personally believe that metroid prime tainted the series style, however, looking at the two now in comparison, the controls and gameplay of Other M have aged far better than the cluttered and invasive controls of the nunchuk and wiimote setup of corruption. I am very happy with this game and as somebody who played the original metroid upon release I can say that the series has progressed in a positive way reimagining those corridors and alien invested ships and planets in a way which would be expected on a modern day console and is perhaps one of the best looking games on the Wii. The gameplay elements are fun and with a very decent level of challenge, and the controls work very smoothly and compliment the gameplay rather than hinder your enjoyment. Excellent game overall and would recommend picking up a Wii again for games of this quality. Expand

Regardless the shortcomings, Nintendo definitely deserves praise for yet again hiring not one but two orchestras to play the game's soundtrack start to end– hearing real strings and percussion, occasionally augmented by sci-fi synthesizer, adds a lushness to the soundtrack that Metroid has long deserved.

Experimental by design. It might not always work, but when it does its an experience hard to forget, wearing the Metroid tag with pride with its head held high.
  3. Team Ninja is not Nintendo. This could be the perfect description for Metroid: Other M, a competent action game that simply lacks the quality and the level of polishing of the "real" Nintendo games.
