They completely changed the classic formula and made it so everyone is together in a vehicle slowly moving across a linear board collecting mini stars, which involves no strategy and is just not fun. There are a total of seven boards which is great, but they are all super straight forward, and while I like some of them, including Blooper Beach and Magma Mine, they are a huge downgrade from the older games. The character selection is decent, it sucks that they removed a bunch from the previous entry including Boo, Dry Bones, and Hammer Bro making them non playable, but the new characters being Koopa, Shy Guy and Kamek were all good choices. The item system is a serious downgrade, no more orbs, candies or anything fun and they’ve been replaced with the dice blocks which let you move slightly less or slightly more. It’s ironic how a party game this time around takes less time to play, but somehow feels longer due to how much more boring it is. You don’t even play a minigame after every turn anymore, which was always a tradition. Instead, you now have to land on a VS space or it’s just random. The minigames are still a good time as always, which redeems the games quality, and I did enjoy the extra modes which there’s a good amount of still. I understand that the developers wanted to freshen up the series, but they completely screwed it up. I don’t think anyone liked the car mechanic, and this was the start of the downfall of the Mario Party series. Expand

I think Mario Party 9 is partly good and partly bad. The first innovation was changing the development studio for Mario Party. You collect mini stars. You sit in a car with 4 players and collect mini-stars together. This is a system nobody asked for. The mini star should be a side mode and not the main mode. I don't know who came up with this idea on the team, but I can understand that NDCube wanted to try something new. But all I can say is that the game is much more fun with more human players. Expand

Mario party 9 at first seemed like a nice continuation from what mario party 8 lacks: Looks. It does look way better than MP8. I also think it had great ideas and i do think the minigames took better advantage of the wii remote, but it lacks one really important thing that is pretty handy to have as a MP game: fun. No, it isnt entirely unfun, but in comparison with MP8 it is cruel and slow at times. It just has less character and charm than MP8 had, and it does feel like just another MP to get out for the holidays. This could be the better game in comparison with MP8, but that isnt saying much in this case if it isnt more fun or creative, wich i think the execution of was not always well hit. Expand

People usually hate this game, but I think it's really underrated. It could be nostalgia, but I think the minigames and music are awesome! Sure playing on the boards is boring, but free play is alone is better than Poppy Playtime alone

The party boards of the game are really not that good, but the rest of the game is amazing. The minigames are really fun, the controls simple and the multiplayer well-made.

It's a great game. It's slandered so much but it's amazing. The car changes things up a little but it still has somewhat of a strategy element to the game with the different dice blocks.

While it is definitely inferior to its non-car based predacessors, Mario Party 9 still has some fun to be had, which unfortunately, will most likely be mostly in the minigames due to the often aggrovating randomness of the car-based boards.

The main Party mode is actual garbage, this did not at all feel like a "Mario Party". The reason I gave this a decent rating is the minigames are decently fun, the music is okay, but not that great. The side modes are also decently fun, but this game is similar to Mario Party 10. But slightly better.

No matter what you think about this game, I still enjoy this game a bunch. Now, the characters move better, the frame rate is better, and the mini games are even better! Mario Party 9 deserves to be played!

The best game to play with family or friends, the gameplay is very cool. If you are looking for a game to play with family, for parties or just to play with friends, then I advise you this game, you will not regret it.

Es increíble como le regala todos los números buenos en los dados al único jugador controlado por la consola. Pero llega a un punto donde ya es insostenible, se nos que es puro beneficio, también en minijuegos dónde sólo se gana por suerte.

    Mario Party 9 - 8/10 {recommend}

It's a great game to play with family and friends, it's pretty chaotic in general, but it's good, it's not
bad as others say. The issue of everyone in the same car is different and brings a differentiate
for the game, but I don't consider it a disadvantage. Overall, it is worth it.

Instead of moving one at a time, we all sit in the same cart. Having the player who’s currently rolling the dice getting more fun than how it would be if they all moved by for. Though there were some fun things. Of course the minigames are no exception but overall, it didn’t really improve upon what was once a fun, competitive Party game. Expand

Even though not many people like that everyone moves in the same car, i think it is really fun to try to mess around your friends while tryng to get the maximum quantity of mini stars.

Am i the only one who thinks the car mechanic is nice?

I like this game, and its good for providing hours of entertainment. Massive collection of minigames, and there are extra characters you can choose from as well. The luck factor makes turns intense, as you could win or lose mini stars.

It can still be fun for a short time, but if you want a true Mario Party experience, get 8. While the Gamecube titles were arguably incredible, MP8 is still a great game for a traditional experience. The new gimmicks in this game were too different from the traditionals that it feels like a game you'd see advertised on Nickelodeon.

When I was waiting for Mario Party 9 to come out in 2012, believe or not, I was a bit hyped. When I finally played Mario Party 9, I enjoyed it bit. Now thinking back, the game kinda sucks. It doesn’t use the core game mechanics that the previous Mario Party games had. Mario Party 9 was developed by NDcube, not Hudson Soft because Hudson Soft is bankrupted. Well, let’s review this...

P.S. R.I.P Hudson Soft (and Bomberman)

The story is mainly generic, and without the original’s game mechanics, it doesn’t really feel like a Mario Party game, there’s no exploration or immersive settings and events that makes Mario Party really great. The cast of characters are pretty good, and there’s a variety of game modes to play and they’re really fun. The mini games are fun and challenging, but there’s a lack of motion controls and variety of mini games. Mario Party 9 doesn’t feel like a full board game to me. But on the bright side, overall it’s enjoyable and pretty fun with friends and family.

There’s not a lot to say about this game, but it’s at least enjoyable despite not using Mario Party’s original core game mechanics. The score is... 7.3 (7).

    This game disgusts me.

It’s way too luck based. Get 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 or 8.
I’d take motion controls over the cars anytime.
Boring af, mini games are **** no items, orbs or candies it’s just roll dice, get lucky or not lucky then repeat. Captain events? Luck. Board? Luck. Boss battles? Luck. Everything is luck!! Music is **** except Bowser Jr. and the main intro theme.

Not nearly as bad as they say, new formula isn't perfect but it's a good alternative. Mini-games are very good as well. Better than Mario Party 8, that's for sure.

I don't personally understand the hate for this game. It's a perfectly fine game, and I'd consider it better than Mario Party 8. That game was pretty lame, but this is honestly really fun when you have multiple people, and I just don't understand why people don't like it.

Everyone is stuck together in a car. Just why? I don't think Nintendo knows how fun it is to have everyone running around in random directions hoping one of them has the most coins. This takes me to another point, why would you replace coins with "mini stars"? Is this a joke Nintendo? Mini stars just don't have the same feel to it as coins, as coins feel rewarding, meanwhile mini stars are just kind of like "woah I got another 20 of them, cool I guess".

The characters. How do you have less characters than Mario Party 8? I mean, some weird characters like Hammer Bro and Blooper (why my boy Blooper) are gone, but now the character selection feels empty. There is no Donkey Kong, no King Boo, no Rosalina, just so many characters that are missing that could easily be in this game.

Now I did mention that I like playing this game with my friends, but that is a bit of an overstatement. I slightly enjoy playing this game with my friends, because a lot of things just aren't much fun in this game. I only give it a 3 because at least it isn't Mario Party 10 and 11.
