I've never had so fun with a brand-new Nintendo IP in years. Splatoon is colourful, addictive and absolutely fun. Remember that time when you played a Mario Kart game or a Smash Bros. game for the first time and felt like it was the most enjoyable thing in the world, you'll feel the same with Splatoon.

Lack of online chat doesn't bother me that much, as you already have a good idea of what to do from your team-mates actions and looking at the map on the GamePad. Lack of stages is a problem, as well as modes, but there will be more of both every week or two weeks, so no need to worry about that. It is a highly recommended game that can stand on its own tentacles alongside Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. Expand

If you mixed up some shooter, strategy, online and Nintendo's magic you will obtain Splatoon. The game is an early access and its almost perfect, so if you think about the amount of stuff Nintendo is going to bring this game it will be legendary.

Superb fun for young and old. Play locally in a 1on1 or online in 4v4.
The motion controls on the gameplay take a bit of getting used to but are surprisingly helpful in aiming.
Graphics are great. Amiibo integrate well.
Another breath of fresh air from Nintendo.

I would like to point out some simple facts about the general ratings. The media ratings are severely limited. Also, 48 of the negative scores, only 9 have dared to leave a review. Click on their names and expose that they have only ever left one review in their entire history of being on Metacritic, so I call Troll on that.
In my original review I wanted to stress that I'm not interested in shooter games, and especially not interested in voice chat option in any game because in my experience it has been mostly annoying listening to racist, misogynist, and homophobic slurs, and/or being told where to go and what to do by a complete stranger. What makes the lack of voice chat succeed even more is that the matches are extremely short, they are always with random people, the game play is so simple and manic there is no way of guessing the other team's moves and then there is the ability to use the touch pad to launch yourself to a player who taps the commands, "C'mon" or "Booyah"... what other communication does someone need? It's not like a shooter at all, it's more like capture the flag aka Turf War. You don't get points for shooting the other players, just covering Turf. Also, I want to add that this is the first time I have ever felt like the game pad has been put to great use with the motion controls adding superior aiming and a sense of immersion that has me totally addicted. What most reviewers also don't say much about is the single player mode where it sometimes feels like a 3D platformer along the lines of the Mario Galaxy series, which are pretty huge boots to fill! So combined with the Ranked Battle mode, the General Mode, the General Mode with friends, the local two player mode, and the single player adventure, I'd say we got the game of the year right here!

I thought I'd want voice chat, but it's utterly not necessary, and in fact would get in the way. The action is incredibly fast-paced. You can see all of your teammates on the map and jump to them at will, and you know where you help is needed because this is a turf war, not a game purely based on killing other players. Killing it certainly a component, but frequently the team that focuses on kills loses the 3-minute match.

I can't wait to see the additional maps and other updates Nintendo has in the works.

Yes, this game's multi-player maps, skins, and general options are slim at launch. BUT the gameplay is innovative, intelligent, deep, and most importantly, a blast to play. While certain mechanics are borrowed from past Nintendo titles (the single-player feels like if Mario Galaxy and Portal 2 had a rebellious late 90's baby), it all comes down to a rich experience that is a thrill to play.

I'm writing this as an adult that puts in about 4 hours of video game playing a week at max. Like Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and even co-op titles like Mario 3D World, I see myself coming back to play this for years to come. Do I care that content is limited at launch? Not really because I don't play on sitting around for hours upon hours playing it. Instead, I'll boot it up once a week or so, be excited when I see new content and enjoy playing the most fun shooter that I've played since Golden Eye.

And don't think that I only enjoy this because I'm a casual gamer. I've played video games for over 25 years at this point - sometimes addicted, sometimes casually, sometimes with absolute wonder at graphical improvements and total immersion. This game isn't Earth-shattering. But I know that I have years to look forward to with it and that if the world catches on, that Nintendo will have a hit with parents, kids, and teenagers who are cool enough to be open-minded about this.

Secondly, it's really fun to play. Every game mode is a blast, and will leave you wanting more for hours.
Lastly, the weapon and gear customization is surprisingly in-depth. There's a decent amount of weapons and clothes that give you certain abilities as you level up, and you can really make a load-out your own.

But there is a MAJOR problem with the game currently, and that is how bare-bones it is in its current state.
So here's the rundown of the content in Splatoon. 3 minute online turf wars, singleplayer campaign, local 1v1 balloon battles, amiibo challenges, and only FIVE maps. You can't do 1v1 online against a friend, ranked battle is not out yet, no other game modes such as capture the flag or something like that, and there's only about one-third of the amount of maps acceptable for a $60 game. Now, keep in mind that there's going to be free content updates in the future. But for now it's a little bit short of content.

I'm enjoying Splatoon so much and have already played for 5+ hours in under a day, but my advice to you is to wait about 3 weeks- 2 months to buy it.

Nintendo made a straight up fun shooter and they pretty much streamlined how stealth could work in a videogame. I'm betting some developer will have a game where you melt into your shadow the same way these inklings dive into colored paint. Brilliant, fun, and colorful; a must for any WiiU owner with a pulse.

As for voice chat, it genuinely would not be suited to the game as it stands. Maybe if there are different modes in the future, or longer rounds, it would be useful. but, as is, it is not missed. The game is too fast-paced to make tactical decisions as a team.

This game really does find new and ingenious ways to play. Swimming along quickly, steathily, up walls, etc. You can creep up on people, go face on. Whatever you want.

The attention to detail is sublime, as the ink grabs what moves over it - players, weapons, whatever.

I love that teams get scrambled each round so that each game is different. The variety of weapons is great. Nothing I have come across yet is overpowered.

For once it's not about K:D ratio. You win the game by covering the map in paint, not by killing the most.

There are so many things this game does right, it's just so much fun.

As for what it does wrong:-

Can't choose weapons or kit between rounds.
Should have map selection feature like in Mario Kart 8.
Needs more game types (coming in a couple of months).

As for what it does right:-

    Small teams.
    Quick rounds.
    High energy.
    Fast-paced.
    Well-rounded.
    Balanced.
    Easy to pick-up.
    Hard to master.
    Looks great.
Use of gamepad is excellent (see the map covered in paint, launch to your teammates, etc).
Focus on the map and environment, not on kills, although kills help your team cover the map in paint.
    Lots of customisation.

    In short: BUY THIS GAME!

Sure some of the design choices are iffy for the multiplayer, but I've had so much fun over the past day that I never even cared. This is Nintendo at its accentric best and while to some its not ideal, for those who embrace it, it is thoroughly charming and functional.

Splatoon turns everything on its head and this is likely because many modern gamers have been bought up with the same cookie cutter shooter experinces. The blueprint for these games has hardly changed and people take this for the "Norm!"

If the game gets the after launch care (Which is planned) with more gear, maps, weapons, stages etc... Then Nintendo have an absolute Gem of an IP.

Their new IP shows of impressive graphics, mostly tight controls (the jump button feels poorly placed and optional gyroscope aiming is a touch awkward and gimmicky), and addictive matches. With a interesting twist on how you compete Nintendo has brought gamers a shooter that is both unique and fun even if some issues get in the way.

With the focus of the game being on multiplayer the campaign isn't all that exciting. It basically just serves as a way to show off the game's shooting mechanics. It's solid all around, but outside of the boss battles there isn't that much exciting going on. It's brief, easy, and it doesn't take long until you notice the repetition starting to set in. Not even the enemy Octolings which have the same powers you do are all that interesting to fight. They are just as easily blown away. The huge boss battles are quite fun even if they are just a brief and easy as the rest of the game. The exception to this is the final boss which suffers due to dragging on for too long. Toppling these giant bosses is a treat and I wanted more from the game in that department.

Overall the campaign in decent, but not terribly remarkable in any way. Probably the most disappointing part though is that it, along with the game as a whole, lacks any sort of personality. There are characters and a very thin story, but both just come off as intrusive and uninteresting. "Inkopolis News" is the worst offender and is just plain annoying. With no way to turn it off or skip it I'm left mashing the A in order to skip all the dialog and get through it as quickly as I can. While the stylistic vibe of the game doesn't give it much of a personality (which is a big disappointment for a Nintendo game) it does add some unique features to the gameplay. Specifically the multiplayer portion.

Like I said before the focus is on the multiplayer and that is where the game delivers. The game's brief matches will have you jumping back in again and again. The goal of matches is not to shoot the other people, but to shoot the ground. Whichever team covers the map with more ink wins. Obviously you are able to shoot other players and "splat" them, but this new twist on how you approach matches gives the game a unique feel that makes it more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been. Matches reward you with coins and experience, both a which are used to get your hands on new gear.

The game puts a lot of emphasis on fashion. However buying new clothes for you character is more than just a way to look different than other players. Each item of clothing comes with special perks like increased ink storage or faster movement which will help you create a play-style that suits you. The same goes for weapons. Choose the giant paint roller and you've got a character more suited to covering as much of the map as possible as opposed to combat. Choose the "Shickling" sniper riffle and you'll be more effective as a player who takes out enemies from afar while other players focus on inking the map.

All of this versatility along with regular "Splatfest" events make for a very fun multiplayer experience that can and most likely will keep you coming back. Especially with the promise of more content coming in the way of free DLC. A few odd little missteps here and there like the lack of voice chat are noticeable, but don't ruin the experience. The map being included on the gamepad sounds lie it would be more useful at first, but then you realize that all it will do is pull you out of the action by taking you eyes off of the screen. Games like COD and Halo have done the exact same thing the gamepad does here, only onscreen right in the corner. I never used this gamepad feature once outside of spawning on my teammates location after being splatted. The lack of VC isn't a huge issue, but it would have made this team-based shooter a little more satisfying had they given gamers the tools to communicate and come up with effective strategies. Overall though it's not really a noticeable non-inclusion.

While a few minor missteps, a disappointing campaign, and missing personality do bring the game down they don't change the fact that "Splatoon" is an all around good game. It's a fun twist on the multiplayer shooter genre and has the potential to be incredibly addicting. While I wouldn't say it's worth buying a Wii U for this is definitely a game very Wii U owner should have in their library.

    I give Splatoon a 7.9/10.

What a unique and enjoyable game. The objective of painting more turf than your opponents is so enjoyable, I just can't get enough. I've played hundreds of hours of M rated shooters and enjoy Splatoon more than any of those. Granted, they really aren't even comparable in many ways.

The ability to turn into a squid an swim in your own ink adds such a great dynamic to the gameplay. Firefights are a lot of fun when you get creative with the ink. When you and an enemy end up fighting over the same turf, you've got to take them out if you want to put more of your ink down. So you get creative and spray up the walls and swim up and behind your enemy and shoot them down! It's a blast.

The variety of weapons is excellent. I actually appreciate the fact that weapons are automatically paired with a sub weapon and a special weapon. It allows the weapon classes to be more balanced and forces you to exploit the pros and cons of each weapon class.

This game is the most unique online gaming experience I've had, probably ever. Great job, Nintendo.

There’s nothing else quite like it, nor the cathartic dopamine jolt to be had when you squid-skim up a paint-smeared quarter pipe, an Inkzooka at the ready, leap over the edge, take aim with your weapon, and reduce a startled opponent to goo.

We waited a bit before giving a vote to Splatoon, but after three months, the game is full of new weapons, has some awesome new modes, and it's still really, really fun. It's a WiiU killer app, one of those games that are not only extremely original, but so well made they utterly deserve a big and supporting community. If you have a WiiU and want an atypical shooter, this is the game for you.

Please don’t just look at the score and “meh” Splatoon, because this online shooter is the best thing that happened to Wii U in a long time. It just needs some major updates, because on arrival it’s just 75% of The Game of the Year. [09/2015, p.46]
