The only reason I bought a Wii U. Worth the £160 for Wii U premium and Splatoon. I've been playing it for a week and still enjoying it just as much. A new game mode came out a day or two ago, they keep adding new content this keeps me coming back for more. Really enjoying this game, my game of the year so far.

    The Good:
    - The Game has a lot you can do, Single Player, Multplayer, Splatfest, Local Multplayer, customized you're inkling! ;)
    - it has an interesting story mode

    The Bad

Fortunately, "Splatoon" is an absolutely fantastic game that succeeds in almost every aspect.
The game is extremely fun to play, unique, fresh (no pun intended) and visually gorgeous, and now with all the free updates available, there's a lot to try out in the game. Also, even though the game's campaign is pretty short, it's still wildly fun to play and features some amazing level design and mission variety that'll keep you on your toes all throughout.
The game isn't immaculate, though. The local multiplayer is definitely lacking and, me being someone that doesn't play online games that often, it sucks that I can't play battles locally and get the same experience (I know "Splatoon 2" is going to fix that, though, which is good). Oh, and the lack of voice chat is still disheartening and annoying.
Even so, "Splatoon" is an excellent game that should not be missing from your Wii U collection. Stay fresh, kids and squids!

Splatoon also has a fairly deep single-player campaign that is worth playing and a split screen Co-op mode. This is a nice change of pace when it comes to recent shooters and is enjoyable. Splatoon may look childish with it's colours and non violent game-play but you will be surprised how complex it feels. Winning/Playing earns you XP and Currency witch is used to level up/unlock new items then customize your character to your play style, Splatoon has a huge section for weapons from small auto rifles, big paint rollers, sniper rifles and much more. Weapons aren't the only things you can buy and upgrade, Hats, Shirts etc all available as well and consistently changing. Almost everything in Splatoon rotates on a 4 hour clock, New Maps, New Cloths etc all are available every 4 hours. This helps to keep the game fresh and new. The world Splatoon takes place in is amazing, It has little details everywhere you notice and makes you feel like your playing in a real world not just a city made to disguise lobby/loading screens. Like, really good. I read some reviews claiming it’s very barebones for the high price and I can somehow see it, but now, when I write this review, this game got enough updates to put some meat on the bones and so it is clearly not an empty, hollow skeleton it was at the release, so… Right now, if you think about buying this, I rise a thumb up and recommend because SPLATOON is FUN.

The whole idea of making their very own online shooter that will be non-violent (as much as the genre allows!) was a daunting task to put it softly, and yet, they managed… The game is whimsical, colourful, funny and most importantly, ridiculously exhilarating, right now it is my #1 game for stress relief! Why? Let’s take a brief look…

    --- Look and Feel ---

The game looks like a candy! It’s absolutely beautiful in every possible way… Yes, it is not next-gen graphics, it does not strive for realism, it does not provide astonishing light effects and some mind-boggling details to focus on. It doesn’t have to, because it knows what it want to be. And it want to be a bright, enjoyable world full, bah, rich in colour and this light mood that makes you firmly believe that even if you do shoot others into explosive oblivion of ink, it’s more a game, a fun play than actual fighting and fierce competition. Characters are just charmingly cute, the details and rich choice of their customization through outfits adds a big and delicious touch of personality to each Squiddo…

Arenas are quite different from each other, well designed and most importantly, beautiful to look at! Even more attention to detail was put into… The ink! The whole painting the land process looks real, feels real and matched with great music and sounds effects give you this delightful “get dirty and wet with the paint” feeling. Animations are also on point, smooth, nice… Enjoyable.

This is a beautifully looking game in the very Nintendoish way. Bright, happy, colourful.

    --- Cogs and Gears ---

So, the game is still pretty bare, but bear with me (no pun intended… perhaps!). As for online multiplayer shooter it still lacks some essential tools, like the long awaited teamspeak which will never come due to two issues – first, there are no regional separation, and so you can have a mixture of all languages in a single team. Hoping all of them will talk English is selfish and vain. Secondly, and I understand Nintendo here, is the vile hatred and pure acid it would bring… Show me ONE online game in which players are polite, not-swearing wads. Nintendo want none of that in their colourful game on the consoles for families, right?

Putting that aside, the game still do not have rich selection of Arenas (it’s hardy Q3A…), the special abilities on the gear offers miniscule bonuses and the gear is made in such a way that any chance to make builds is horribly squandered and the weaponry, when quite balances, does not really offer anything extremely unique in feel. Which is fine, because thanks to that the games are more balanced. It might piss off hardcore players who expect game solely based on skill, but Splatoon never aimed to be “Nintendo variant of Quake”, but a light, quick shooter to have some fun. And they surely did that well.

    --- Fun Factor ---

Oh gosh… Plenty of that here! This game is insanely fun and basically thanks to this elusive and hard to define factor I am giving it such a high grade. On the first look it might feel a little wonky, a little empty in content, easy to burn through… And, on some level, this is true. However it is very important to notice, that even when you are piledriving through the game, it always remain extremely fun. Each fast paced match is thrilling and awesome. You very rarely feel that there are some defeats that you cannot win through if you pull your act together (and usually it happens only if one of your team member is AFK or disconnect). Even the repetitive maps have surprisingly high refresh rate, as you rarely focus on the arena alone, and more on the fast paced play going on, trying to cover it all in ink and splat some fools that come to your sight… Even extremely simple and straightforward single player campaign is so fast-paced and breakneck you do not really find yourself thinking “well, this is dumb” but rather “woo-hee, here we go!”.
All in All, Splatfest is growing nicely. New maps, new modes, new weaponry is coming as we speak, the game expands… And I still continue to love it and I feel better if during a day I burn 30-40 minutes splashing ink around.

My main gripe with this game would be that I wish the maps in multiplayer randomized after each match. Playing the same two maps repeatedly for a couple of hours gets unpleasantly repetitive real quick.

Other than that, this game is pretty much ink-credible. Overused pun to describe this game, I know. But it's true.

Now, you have CoD, your standard shooter, where you shoot with no particular goal to follow other than to shoot people, but Splatoon, on the other hand, is a game where shooting people isn't the goal of the battle. If you don't know, Splatoon's main mode involves you spreading your ink to cover turf, and the team with more area covered by the end of the match wins. On top of that, you can swim through your own ink as a squid to go faster, and covering ink also gets you cash that you can spend on weapons and gear, and it levels up your gear and your Inkling (That's your player by the way). The game also has a one-on-one multiplayer mode, but I didn't find it to be too fun, because first off, the objective of the mode itself is boring, and you can only choose from a predetermined weapon and gear setup. The game also comes with a single player mode where you can even unlock new weapons, but it didn't last me that long. If you manage to level up to level 10, you can participate in Ranked Battles online, and if you can manage the insanity, you'll be rewarded with a huuuuuuge amount of in-game money. If you can't, then you've wasted your time and you get nothing. But the game as a whole offers a huge amount of variety, and even if you manage to get everything, achieve level 20, beat story mode with all upgraded equipment and all the scrolls, and get to rank A+, I bet you could still have the urge to keep on playing the game. Splatoon feels incredibly fresh and yet brilliantly nostalgic. It hit's all the right notes ensuring you will be smiling throughout. It's colourful and playful nature is infectious and makes for the best multiplayer shooting game perhaps since Goldeneye.
Splatoon is gaming at it's best: It dares to be different, it doesn;t try to hard to make sense, it gives the middle finger to realism and focuses solely on pure fun.
The online works almost flawlessly and wait times are very tolerable.
Reviewing this 2 months after release it is safe to say Nintendo made good on their promise to release more content and releases of new levels and weapons continues to flow. Splatfests, occasional competitive events are a hoot too.

Here's my review, I'm going to pick at some criticism of people on this game and give my own thoughts. I bought this game at the EU retail price of $35 (like captain toad), which I think is a steal considering how much content this game is getting and how long you can stay invested in it.

Here's my review, I'm going to pick at some criticism of people on this game and give my own thoughts. I bought this game at the EU retail price of $35 (like captain toad), which I think is a steal considering how much content this game is getting and how long you can stay invested in it.

1: The game has no voice chat
Because we all know how nice it is to be cursed out by squeaky 12-year-old boys (implied sarcasm). Nintendo wants to keep player-to-player interaction to a minimum for obvious child safety and profanity reasons. Putting open voice chat on Splatoon would ruin Nintendo's reputation. However, I do not understand why they don't allow it for friends who are playing together like in Smash. Maybe they will patch it in sometime in the future.

    2: No party system
You can join your friends if they are playing a game, but your teams are assigned randomly to avoid good players herding together and destroying all randomly selected opposition. I think this is a great design choice. In the coming expansion players will be able to go versus against pre-assembled teams, outside of the random lobby.

3: You can't switch your loadout during a match
In fact you can't do anything during a match, not even adjust your camera sensitivity. Why? Because you are playing a match and you should focus on playing and learning your weapon load-out. I think it's an excellent way to keep players in the game somewhat forcefully and make them learn how to play their weapon. If you allow people to change their load-out during games, it will be a constant schizophrenic mess of people testing weapons and then throwing them in the corner as soon as they get splatted.

4: The single player is short
Well of course it is, as this is a completely multiplayer centric game. Considering some weapons require you to beat the single-player campaign I'm actually glad that it's short.

Thinking back on how relatively incomplete this game launched and its pricing, I'm also suspecting a completely rushed launch. The number of maps was lacking and the game has constant connection issues. The lag is atrocious at times. This ends up with the server often deciding that two people splatted each other at the same time, or that you get splatted by a sniper without even seeing the aim pointer.

What it boils down to are the fun mechanics. You paint the floor, and the enemy can't walk in it. This makes the front lines of the battle and any enemy movement clearly visible. The respawn times are short and you can "jump" to your allies by simply touching the game pad. There is simply no end to the pvp if you don't want it to. Speaking of the game pad, as a mouse guy I love the precision that motion controls offer me.

There are as many play styles as there are weapons in this game. Trying to learn them and optimize them with the right clothing boosts is a lot of fun to me. The clothing is equipped with a main skill boost and up to 3 sub skill boosts. The same clothing will always have the same main boost, but the sub boosts are assigned randomly. Three sub-skill boosts combined make up for one main skill boost.
You can re-roll these random slots, so creating a set of clothing for a particular weapon and play style is highly beneficial in my opinion.

You can sink a lot of time into this game. I keep finding myself coming back to it and the total playtime is up there with smash. The game is certainly lacking in local multiplayer options, but I suspect they will do more for this in the future. The core game is very solid, completely unique and fun. Leave the devs to simmer a little longer if your shops are asking $60, but at $40 and below it is absolutely worth it.

Splatoon has totally revolutionized the shooter genre, with it's amazing paint based mechanics, and has delivered a knockout blow to the endless stream of cookie-cutter, rehashed games appearing on the other consoles.

This is hands down the best game of the year. If you own a Wii U, you MUST own this game.

When this game was announced I had a feeling I was going to enjoy it. But once I actually tried it, I was blown away. It looks amazing, plays great, and the multiplayer often becomes HIGHLY competitive (in a great way). This is, in my opinion, THE shooter (that isn't quite simply a shooter) to own on the Wii U!

A great game that demonstrates how games can provide longevity with more content, Splatoon's gameplay is an absolute blast to hear about, and a absolute blast to play. It's still got it's fair share of gripes (Rotation can be a double edge, horrible weapon balance), but it's definitely one of the best games I've played this year.

Possibly the game that defines the Wii-U. Goofy, yet fun, cartoony yet beautiful. Nintendo, you've done it again! Let's break it down, shall we?

    A: Music/Sounds

Splatoon has some really nice music in it. Possibly even better than the Legend of Zelda series. Pretty much the society in the game is based around music. It is really strange, yet they pull it off brilliantly. The music is so catchy, that I have caught myself humming to the tune all of the time. The sounds are amazing as well, but the music is absolutely astounding in this game.

10/10 WITH my Thumbs Up of Approval

    B: Graphics

The graphics in this game are actually quite simple, but they are so polished that you can't help but stare. Even the landscape in the game looks better than some modern PS4 games, and the PS4 is more powerful than the Wii-U. The graphics aren't realistic, but they aren't supposed to be. Even the unique patterns of the Ink Splatter really stood out to me in this game.

    10/10

    C: Gameplay

The gameplay and controls in this game are actually really well done, and definitely utilises the gamepad. If you are to play Online, you have to cover up as much ground as possible in the time limit. If your team has covered up more ground in the time, you win. Kills do not count, but they are useful as it can prevent the other players from covering up ground. You can shoot ink onto the ground, then actually turn into a Squid to hide from other players, easier transportation, go through girders, and fill up your ink bar. The battling system is easily much more fun than most realistic shooters - and stands out in the spotlight. There's even a huge variety of weapons that have unique stats and abilities, and can really make gameplay change. Even exploring the hub town of Inkopolis is fun, as you can meet suspicious characters and see what other people have been doing via miiverse. Every once in a while, they even have a thing called 'Splatfest'. This is where there are 2 options, and players get to vote between one of the two. For Example: Which is better, Zombies or Ghosts? - This is just one of the many little touches that makes this game worth getting.

    10/10

    D: Online

This is where the game truly stands out. The online community for this game is massive, and is thriving no matter what time of the day it is. It is extremely easy to get a match up and running, and you can even play a minigame while you wait for people to join! Pretty much 90% of this game relies on Online, so besides the Story Mode, I can't really think of anything that isn't online. Playing online is extremely fun, but after a couple of matches, it can get a little boring. There aren't too many gamemodes, but I'm sure that with DLC and updates, it can easily be fixed (As they have already started doing, by the way).

9/10 WITH my Thumbs Up of Approval

Now that we have broken down pretty much everything of the game (Except for Story, I didn't finish that) I can come to my conclusion. Splatoon is an amazing game that relies pretty much fully on Online. If you aren't able to connect to the internet, the game isn't much to look at besides the story mode. But if you can join Online, this game is possibly the best for the Wii-U. So, my overall rating - the second highest I can possibly offer...

10/10 WITH my 2015 GOTY Award AND Wii-U Definitive Game Award!

In Splatoon, you take the role of a Inkling, a interesting race that can turn from a human into a squid. Inklings can swim in their own ink, but are slow in the enemies ink.
They're many weapons from different category (Shooter, Charger, Roller, etc.) you can use, all of which have their advantages and disadvantages. Each weapon comes with a Sub weapon, and a Special weapon, giving out different playing style. Each shot from your weapons, and the sub weapon, consumes ink from your tank, which is ammo. If you're running out of ammo, hide in your ink to recharge. You also have a special meter for your special weapon, and it fills up as you cover turf. These weapons are powerful, and can change the tide of the match.
You have the option to play as either a Male inkling, or a Female inkling. And there's shops where you an get gear (But you first must reach Level 10). Each gears have special abilities, such as higher defense, faster speed, and things like that. You can unlock even more abilities by playing online more.

The game's main selling point is its great online mode. There are two modes you can play online: Turf War, and Ranked Battle.

In Turf War, 2 teams of 4 Inklings must cover as much a turf as possible with their ink before the time runs out. Whichever team covers the most turf wins. You get points by inking turfs and splatting enemies. After the game, you'll get points based on your overall performance, which is need to level up.

In Ranked Battle, you'll compete in a competitive mode with different games modes. Winning will rise up your rank, while losing lowers it. You also get more points in ranked battle than you do in turf war.

There are many stages to play on online. The stages are the same for both turf war and ranked battles. Each are completely different, and requires new strategy. The stage selection rotates daily, so you'll be playing different stages each day.

Perhaps the only real lacking thing in Splatoon is the single player mode. There is a story mode where you must rescue stolen zapfish from a evil octopus-like race. While it can be fun, it's also easy to beat. The only hard part in the final boss.

Overall, definitely one of the best games on the Wii U. You'll love its online mode.

The multiplayer is where the bread and butter is at. The game always runs at 60fps online which is great and makes the experience feel very smooth and natural. But the single player was still a fun - if short - burst of action, and the multiplayer community has been so much fun to play with! Definitely a game worthy of many sequels in the future! Expand

Almost 150h playing since it comes talk for itself, an incredible, fast and very agile controls set the new style on how to play a shooter (the two stick stile is in the stone age compared to the super agile gyroscope stile...), this title is like heroin made videogame, absolute adictive and tremendous fun, it goes straigh to your throath.

Silly, quirky, and most importantly, fun. The game is easy to play, and actually makes admirable use of the WiiU's motion controls. It's predominantly online, but does have an acceptable single player mode, if you ever get bored of matchmaking. The game feels unique, it's fun to look at, and fun to play, definitely a must have for the WiiU.

STORY: In Splatoon we get a very simple story. The Octarians (the rivals of the Inklings) have stolen the energie source of Inkcopolis...get it back!.

P.S: This is only if you play story mode.

PRESENTATION: Splatoon just SCREAMS Japan. And the art style definitely reflects that having some flashy colors and models that really contrast the world that the game provides.

Performance wise Splatoon is excellent. The smooth 60 fps remain constant throughout 98% of the game, but to do that the game had to be downgraded to 720p, but the antialiasing cleans most of the rough edges.

And then we have...of course...the SPECTACULAR soundtrack. What make this one stand out is that it's a combination of many different styles like Jpop, Rock and even Dubstep, which are very Japanese like if you could no doubt tell. Many of these songs are composed by this game's fictional group, the Squid Sisters, which are composed by Callie and Marie. Why do i tell you that?, well...they are freaking adorable!.

GAMEPLAY: Splatoon is Nintendo's take on the third person shooter genre. The main innovation of the game is, of course, turning into a squid (with the ZL button). This mechanic provides a lot of depth to the game, as well as many possibilities of approaching situations, maybe you'll hide in a specific spot to SPLAT! someone to continue painting that area in peace or maybe you will spray paint on the walls to get to a hire area to place a sub weapon or simply paint from a higher place.

We also have different weapons like a paint bucket, a paint-brush, a rapid-fire gun, a roller, a freakin mini-gun!, and a sniper-rifle. Each one having a specific use that i can't comment on because metacritic's 5000 letter count sucks!.

So we have 6 different weapons with each one having different variations and slo packing a sub-weapon. This sub weapons are activated with the R trigger and they can range from a barrier, a paint bomb, a sticky paint bomb, grenades and my personal favorite, the paint-sprayer, since you can leave it in any place and while you are covering a certain area, the sprayer will be painting another in a 360° radio.

Not only that, but each weapon also has a "SUPER WEAPON" that can be activated by pressing the stick, but to use it you need to fill a meter by covering area or by splatting other inklings. But when you manage to do so you can activate a Bazooka, a Torpedo, a bomb rush, a shield, a Kraken transformation, etc.

Unfortunately the sub and SUPER! weapons are locked with the main one, so in order to get what you want it's completely random, but personally i never had any problem with it.

Splatoon has to different ways to play. First is the single player, where you fight the evil ontarians, complete missions and fight extremely fun bosses that requiere stragetie and understanding of the mechanics of the game and with the Amiibo you can get even more missions and unlock mini games and gear or simply giving Carrie and Marie more songs and dance moves. But let's be honest, the online mode is the the main focus here, so let's see what modes we have:

Turf War: You have to cover as much ground as you can possibly can in less than 3 minutes and the team who paints more of the stage wins. This will be the only mode that you will get access to for the first 10 levels, but i don't have any problems since it's very addictive.

Splat Zones: Here you need to cover a specific area on the map and the team that remains the more in that area, while it's theirs, wins. This mode is extremely fun a chaotic when everyone is in the same place, struggling and fighting over the zone.

Tower Control: This mode is the very definition of chaos. There's a tower in the middle of the stage and the team who drags the tower to the opposite team's place or the one who makes it the furthest wins

Rainmaker: There's a statue of a Fish laying around the map and the team who carries it to the opposite team's base wins. One player does have to carry the Rainmaker and while it makes you slow, you can defend yourself with tornadoes of paint, but for the most part you depend on your teammates to protect you.

Splatfest:. You pick a team of a specific theme like Dogs vs Cats or something. And then you play the other modes and the team that wins the more matches wins the competition. It's extremely fun since it depends on you to make your team win and when Callie and Marie announce the winner you are in the edge of your seat.

There's some other stuff i forgot to mention like the way that perks are locked to your gear, but i don't find it necessary.

Overall Splatoon is a fantastic and unique game and a definite must own for any Wii U owner and i still maintain that 9/10 i gave it last time.

This game is nintendo's biggest surprise and creative title in a long while. At first this game was about a 92-94, but nintendo showed ho dedicated they were in making this a phenomenal experience for everyone to play. Almost every time i've logged into a splatoon, there has been a new update, such as a new gun, a new bomb, a new map, or something else fun to play with. This game never seems to end, with new content coming out every week or so, and this gave the game a 96 to 97. The community of splatoon is very unique, very friendly and quirky, and makes the game that much greater. Things like splatfeast and other events splatoon provides to meet other splatoon players and have a fun time, makes the game a very fun community experience. The graphics are very fresh, the designs of the characters are very creative, everything in this game feels and looks so original and unique, you can't help but love it. The gameplay itself is unlike any other game. It's a shooter, just like call of duty or battlefield, but makes it unlike any other. Seriously, who else would of thought to make guns of full of ink, full out territory wars using squirds as soldiers instead of men with rifles. This is a very fun game, and is unlike any other game you've played before and it needs your attention just like many other games on the wii u that go unnoticed Expand

What separates Splatoon from so many other shooters is that new players (both of the game and the genre as a whole) can immediately jump into a match and feel as if they are contributing to their team in a meaningful way. Whether you want to hang back and cover territory, stake out a high point in the map for sniping or charge in guns blazing the player will have equal amounts of fun.

    Some other positives include
    - a rewarding one player campaign that helps hone your skills for competitive play. Level design similar to Mario Galaxy encourages exploration and creative use of weapons.
    - new (free!) content added nearly every other week keeps game fresh more than 6 months after release
    - short match length makes for addicting play sessions - "Just one more!"

A con would be Splatoon's insistence on requiring the player to read all text prompts. Sometimes you just want to jump into a shop or right into game play and not have to mash A to get past a wall of text. It's picky but is in fact a nuisance. Additionally, the system for stage selection could be better.

But as of now, this game is easily one of my favorites. Throwing away the traditional style of war based combat, Splatoon goes for a more kid friendly approach that works greatly. The motion controls, while they would be a bit of a red flag to people, are very well implemented and extremely responsive but if you still don't enjoy them can be turned off. My only complaint is more of a nitpick, but the single player stuff in the game is very underwhelming as the story mode last around 4 to 6 hours and the local multiplayer I half the time forget about. As the core focus of the game is multiplayer though, it's good to see the devs were able to focus on that main aspect. Multiplayer is also a ton of fun with four modes to play and a ton of maps. The regular battle mode Turf War is short, simple, and can be played whenever. The other three modes Splat Zones, Tower Control, and Rainmaker, can be played in ranked depending on which are chosen. The few problems with multiplayer are a lack of voice chat between friends and the choice to choose which modes and maps you play on. Those are set on a four hour rotation and if you don't get the maps or mode you care for then the only thing to do is wait, which can be annoying. Voice chat not being in the game makes sense since it is meant for children, but talking between friends would make sense as games like Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros Wii U have been able to do this. In the end, with the constant free updates of new weapons and maps to boot, Splatoon is an enjoyable experience just built around pure fun. It is easily one of my favorite games of this year and a must buy if you have a Wii U. And just cause it seems mandatory, TL;DR Splatoon is good. Go play it. Expand

We waited a bit before giving a vote to Splatoon, but after three months, the game is full of new weapons, has some awesome new modes, and it's still really, really fun. It's a WiiU killer app, one of those games that are not only extremely original, but so well made they utterly deserve a big and supporting community.
